    Years have passed, but this car has proven to be the most reliable in its class with the fewest breakdowns. But it is also not as popular as the Passat!

    Just picked up an Avensis tourer 1.8 petrol automatic Icon Business Edition last week. Done a few long trips, including to France & Belgium. Extremely impressed with the equipment, performance, economy and comfort. Would thoroughly recommend this car.

      Bought one myself too and I am impressed. Had concerns but all went away after the first trip. Engine and CVT gearbox works very well, engine surprisingly torque from low revs for a 1.8 NA engine. Drives better around corners than my 2010 Audi A6 tbh. Its is just a bit sad that the petrol version were never sold with the top range (T4, T-spirit or later called Excel) in the UK. Was not a big fan of the look but wanted a reliable petrol with auto box and good trim level (key-less entry and start, leather, satnav, reversing camera and sensors, auto lights+ wipers etc) and only the Avensis ticked all boxes for me. Since owning one the look has grown on me and I am liking it more and more as time goes by. Think it is a smart buy if you get one. Maybe not as good looking as the overrated German rivals but will definitely keep you smiling every time you visit the dealer for service.

    This car far better then the passat and the insignia, those cars break and cost you money to repair, this will run for ever, yes I have disadvantages one being to plasticy instead of having more softer materials, and secondly the stupid electric hand brake it would been alot better with a traditional leaver hand brake like the previous models had. Other wise the car is good looking and speacily the 2.0d4d are great engines for these.

    Just spend two hours in one of these in a taxi. And it didn't pass the "will it hurt my backside" test.
    Doesn't seem to drive refined at all and I could even hear the exhaust when accelerating.
    And the secret storage in the back.... Not a secret anymore, is it??

    I have one of these.
    I am happy with the looks, happy how it drives on motorway, happy with the level of comfort but there are couple of things that are showing the "new" 2012 -to today Avensis is barely a "update" of an old model. It lags when compared to newest competition. The car vibrates at idle, gears are not very well spaced out (either have to rev or not enough revs in city traffic). Clunky suspension of bad road surface.

    • @dkzzzz
      @dkzzzz 8 років тому +1

      +Alexandru Kovacs So it is no different from 1997-2003... Bad suspension outside of highways, terrible disconnected-feeling in the steering (like an Oldsmobile or Mercury from 1994), vibrating front seats at idle. This British version of Toyota Camry is half the car in comparison to its US sister. It is true that car manufacturers build far better products for the US car market. I drove 1999 Camry LE in US and the car drives like Lexus, this Avensis pales in comparison.

      @Bilal Ahmed
      Have you driven passat?
      I have 2 stories for you.
      1. I went to buy an estate car. I had a test drive for Skoda Superb, VW Passat and Toyota Avensis. The ride of Avensis was terribly uncomfortable. Superb was just like its name. Passat was the most comfortable. I used to drive Passat for 10 to 12 hours every day but never felt tired or had any muscle pain.
      2. I had a minor accident. I hit a Toyota corolla 2005 with my Passat 2009. My speed would have been 10 to 15 MPH. Beleive me, the rear bumper of avensis was half on the ground while there was a minor scratch on Passat's front bumper. Toyota make very reliable and practical cars but these cars can't compete with german car in strength and safety.

    I have had this car for 6 months now and brought it as I had the Mk1 avensis for 8 years and it was faultless. I like the styling and stands out from your Ford/VW/Vauxhall fodder. Like the review says the car is so boring to drive that we are already thinking of changing it for a passet estate and don't get me started on the idotic hand brake. The media system is good, that is until you want to change something whilst driving then you have to take you eyes off the road to do almost anything and hooking up the mobile to google search is hit and miss although it is a good idea.
    Yes it does all we want as a family car and yes it is comfy and refined and blah blah blah but just has no character and I'm afraid my wife and I both want more excitment when we jump in the car.

    Had to pay for the whole clutch system replacement after only 35,000 miles.
