Torren Martyn - 'Calypte - a sailing and surfing voyage' - needessentials

- When Torren Martyn and Aiyana Powell borrowed the 35ft sailing boat 'Calypte' and departed from the east coast of Thailand in early 2022, they had a combined sailing experience of only a few days. The one requirement of their charter was to eventually deliver the boat to Eastern Indonesia. They could learn as they went, get a few friends with sailing experience to help through the tricky bits and pick up as much as possible from them along the way. With this plan, the pair embarked onto the South China Sea, headed up through the Strait of Malacca and around the tip of Sumatra; out into the Indian Ocean on a year-long expedition in search of waves. What seemed like an idyllic journey didn’t come easy. It was difficult to anticipate the challenges of the sleepless nights, the endless rolling and tossing of the boat, the breakdowns, the relentless maintenance and confined space. But adventures always seem sweeter if it really feels like you had to work to get there.

A good old-fashioned proper surf film, no product placement or self entitled egos. Great cast and story line, beautifully filmed and edited. Best thing I've watched in a long long time ...typical class again from need essentials.

I had the joy of watching this on the big screen at the La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, California, surrounded by cherished ones, positive vibes, and amazing individuals. With that being said, this surpasses all expectations. It's not just my aspiration to embark on adventures like this, but it's also my dream to craft something as exquisite and enjoyable as what needessentials is creating. I aim to work with or establish a brand that values the Earth, its inhabitants, and, of course, exceptional branding. 😂 huge shoutout to needessentials and everyone involved for guiding me towards understanding my aspirations of prioritizing making memories over money.

Clearly the outstanding question is how the hell Torren backdoored slabby tubes for a year and didn’t touch the reef once.

Just finished watching what could be one of the best films I have ever seen. From the 1st minute to the last second, it encapsulates what life should be all about. Regardless of if you surf or not, this is an adventure of the mind, body and soul and the fact that there were uncrowded perfect waves, just added the cherry on top. Well done to everyone involved in making this come to light. A soulful journey that left you wanting more and reigniting that little spark in all of us🤙🏄

Somehow i feel privileged and more connected to the planet just by watching this -- so I can only imagine the monumental feeling of actually undertaking such an amazing journey. Best movie I’ve seen this year. As a kid going to see surf movies with all the hootin’ and hollerin’ was one thing. This just made me grateful that I picked up a board one day and began my love affair with surfing.
