Exploring Australia's Biggest City: Sydney | NO CONTEST OFF TOUR

  • If Australia is one of surfing’s greatest nations then Sydney might just be the world’s greatest surfing city. With four-million people sharing the world’s largest natural harbour and 50-miles of coastline, blessed with incredible waves year round, Sydney is a modern metropolis on the water, with a storied, gritty surfing underbelly.
From Isabel Letham famously riding waves with Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku at Freshwater Beach in 1915 through to a string of world champions including Tom Carroll, Mark Occhilupo and Layne Beachley, and on down the line to modern stars like Molly Picklum and Jarvis Earle, Sydney’s competitive bloodline runs deep. While the greater surfing community might know and toast the world champions, it is the hardcore local boardrider scene that is the DNA everything is built upon, and from Maroubra to Avoca and Newport to Bondi, host Ashton Goggans meets a cross-section of crusty locals, and explores the world class waves they live and breathe.
On the back of radical surfing Sydney was not only responsible for the surfboard revolutions of the Brookvale Six and the invention of Simon Anderson’s thruster, but spawned an irreverent and sardonic multi-million surf industry of its own. If that’s not enough, the good old Aussie cafe, complete with avocado toast, washed down with a flat white, has become a global phenomenon, and they were largely born of the beaches too.
None of this exists without the waves however, and from Cape Solander to North Narrabeen, Deadman’s to Voodoo and beyond, Sydney boasts world class surfing around every headland. Press play above and explore it for yourself. #nocontest #sydney #australia

I live in Bondi and I love it with all my heart, but my advice is to save it for tanning and making new friends! On a good day you can expect dozens if not hundreds of surfers on the same peak. The banks are wildly unpredictable and even if you find a nice peeler, you'll have to navigate all manner of body surfers, swimmers and semi-drowning tourists! If you wanna surf, head round the corner to Bronte, Tama or even further South to Maroubra, or across the bridge to the Northern Beaches!

Sport champs rarely come from upper class socio economic background.
Many of the coastal spots were working class in the 60-90s. Nowadays living within 15-20km from the coast across all Australian cities has become unaffordable for most people.
While you still have good surfers,
rich/well-off kids just don’t have the same level of “hunger” and also have access to other options in life. Brazil still has some level of accessibility to the beach for the lower class (also changing fast), they also have over 200M people like the US and while they may not have world top spots they have a very long surfable coast all along the country

A lot of places in NZ can be very fickle at times but we do have some quality waves. Most times on the weekend if the local spots are crap you can find good waves by driving 2 or 3 hrs and hiking across farmland. I seriously think the producers and writers of this episode were like "Ugh its chaotic already, and beyond the golden days, lets just blast it up a bit more before someone else does it".
Lets be very honest (Sydney born here). The people saying Sydney is good are either new to Sydney, or are extremely wealthy like top 5%.
The reality is it is expensive, chaotic city filled with some of the most competitive lineups for the wave quality. Ratio of aggressive crowd to bad wave quality is among the worst in the world. Also the overall vibe in Sydney, everyone is competing and has anxiety. Its an expensive place to be, and the pressures of cost of living causes people to project huge insecurities and manipulation into alot of interactions in their daily lives. Its only gonna get worse. But look I like how you showcased Bill and Grayson, they are actually nice guys in the water and not the aggro ones i'm talking about. I hope this segment doesn't bring more people to the place. You should have seen South Bondi Corner the past two months. Literally 100 guys on a tiny left. Totally depressing and aggravating. Sydney's also the 2nd most expensive city in the world for real estate. Young people are completely miserable at the prospect of building their future here.

Deadman’s is on the northern beaches of Sydney not the southern beaches of Sydney. Someone didn’t do their research properly

THIS IS TRULY THE ANTHONY BOURDAIN show OF the SURFING WORLD. We’ve all as surfers been desperate for a point of view that really understands the soul of thisnis world. Ashton Goggins is the future content impresario of the this production style surf world using his masterful writing and shooting to capture the poetry of what it means to be a person that needs the ocean to be inspired.

Thanks for the support, Jerry. Big fan of Bourdain's ability to break down complex realities, and make space for the local guides and characters to express themselves and their regional identity. Grateful to get to explore this sprawling surfing world and help tell these local stories for an international audience.

Glad Anthony Bourdain isn't around for that. Bondi was well and truly gentrified 20 years ago, as were the two around the corner. It was hassled 35 years ago. You are much more likely to have some kook ditching a mal in your face now though.

By some measures Melbourne is the most populous. However, the greater metropolitan area of Sydney is still bigger.
