@@RoversAdventure Hey, I love your content and wish you fair winds but I am not buying this reply.. how do you sleep with that noise and what is causing it ? That noise could be seriously fatiguing on a multi day passage… please let us know what is causing it so that we can try to avoid it !
No toerail or leaning rack/post next to the mast is a bit worrysome... Next to mast would be a problem due to sail system but still. Something to grab firmly or lean against in wavy conditions if you need to be there...
It's unual to see a support system like you describe at the mast on a small boat. I've never had one, and having crossed both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans solo, I've never felt that I needed a support.
Another great video - I love watching and learning - glad you used the motor when there was zero wind - no point in just bobbing around - thanks for this Alan! ⛵
Oh man...I was going mad just looking with that screechy noise going on and the sails flapping...😅 you must have the patience of an angel.. At 1:45 when you talk of a pleasant environment in the cabin with all the screeching going on I almost chocked Laughing..😂. I hope the wind picks up, good on you.
A great video Alan of what its really like when cruising. Your attitude 9:16 to light air conditions is the true mark of a bluewater sailor....beautiful indeed! Thanks for bring us along....
All sailing boats and ships creak and groan like this, in heavy weather they wail and screech and sound like a raving banshee. It's not for the faint hearted
Another fine video, watched with envy after sitting in an office all day. That Tohatsu is a fine engine. I bet it merely sips petrol too. Best wishes from Wales, Alan.
I love the design of the boat and I could not find any specs of it. Thank you very much Alan for the videos and I hope all goes well.A lot of people do not realize how strong wood is for building boats and when you run into trouble it is nice to be able to repair them quickly and at reasonable cost. I always look forward to your videos.
Check his initial videos about this project from a couple years ago. He has one going over the design and another of an interview with the boat’s designer.
WOW, what is that INTENSE squeaking we hear below!? Do you have any idea what it's from and are you motivated to do something about it? I would be. There's no way I could put up with that for two years, tens of thousands of miles.
Sven Yrvind described that by collecting the condensation of his glass windows he kept the inside of his boat dry - kind of like a poor man's dehumidifier.
Alan - how are those twin keels holding up in a seaway? The bilge keel was popular for coastal cruising in the UK and I've always liked it as a notion.
I am interested in your rig. The junk rig seems to have many advantages. I am glad you installed a preventer in the low winds. It worries me in a jibe that your sheets might knock you off deck. I am so impressed with your build and how much thought went into every detail. How is your main hatch working out? Does it latch open? Enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Thanks for the update. You mentioned about having to reef the sail a little even though the wind is light, because you need to balance the sail with the wind vane. Would it work if you change to a smaller wind vane in light wind so that you can maximise your sail area in order to catch as much wind as possible? My apologies for my amateurish question. I'm not a sailor, but i'm so inspired by your sharing and stories, which is very educational.
Great point. A bigger vane would be the answer in light winds. The stringer the winds the smaller the vane paddle. Perhaps the clearance under the solar array is limiting that.
Loving these vids, Alan! Thank you. I assume the Tohatsu is a bit noisy? I am looking for a 6hp for my Starwind 22, but I want something easy on the eardrums. Anyway, I have a question for you. John Vigor says (in one of his books) breaking waves 1/3 of the boat's length can knock it down to 130 degrees. Would you say a huge part of your seaworthiness is the ability to get real-time weather updates enroute? Given your current loading of the boat and you down in the cabin, what did your naval architect compute your AVS would be for Wave Rover?
Are you happy with her performance in light winds ? I realise that the design makes the rig very easy to handle for a singlehander but a more conventional set up would have more power when the wind is not giving you much assistance.
Also on downwind courses a junk rig is more powerful than a bermuda rig with the same sail area. Bermuda rigs compensate that with downwind sails. But flying a kite while cruising is a thing on its own.
Put some more sails up, man, the spinnacker, main topsail, mizzen staysail, and what' s that eerie squeeking noise all the time, that would drive me nuts ! Happy sailing anyway.
This is a “me” problem, but you might be able to help: Is it possible for you to give a bit more info about your position and where your going at the start of the video? I’ve been MarineTraffic stalking you so I’ve got some idea of where you be are in real time but I couldn’t remember where you were in youtube time😆 If not, no worries, I’ll figure it out when you make landfall. Fair winds or fair motoring however it shakes out!
Thankyou so much for rescuing my Vessel from the rocks.
It's all part of a sailor's ethos. Fair winds my friend.
Sirens, of course.

I like the idea of you posting daily updates even if only 10 minutes or so. Keep up the good work .
That is the BIGGEST 21' vessel around! Great job Alan!!

A good opportunity to run in the engine and give it a good workout 💪
Absolutely
It was great meeting you Friday night at Hole in the Wall in Chesapeake City, Alan. I'm excited to see more of you adventures
It was great to talk to a real local. I ended up going directly to the Sassafras River on Sunday

Every day on the sea is a good day
Does that screeching noise not drive you crazy ? What is doing that ?
All sailing boats and ships creak and groan like this, in heavy weather they wail and screech and sound like a raving banshee.
It's not for the faint hearted
Looks like it is the yard rubbing on the mast when the wind is pushing the sail.
My boat was a plywood/glass/epoxy construction too, 32 feet, no "screaching" noises in any situation.
Most likely is the rubber boot that seals the base of the mast as the mast flexes against the sails😅
Sounds like wood rubbing on wood and it will drive him batty if it continues unaddressed!
One could only wish for a day at the office like yours Alan👍
Great video! I hope you can do something about the squeaking!

Absolutely right on the fuel consumption.
As always, so nice! Thank for making these! They keep us forging our own adventures. ❤
Thanks for saying so my friend. I trust all is well with your build.

Yes! Some specs, please!
Check his initial videos about this project from a couple years ago. He has one going over the design and another of an interview with the boat’s designer.
But some things have changed (rig, keel) and some couldn't been known (weight ready to sail).
Super vid alan...its all about the journey ...not the destination👍
Well said!
So excited to see how far you take Wave Rover. She's going to look great down there in the clear Caribbean waters. Fair winds!
I am glad you are faring well although remember the sunscreen!
I'm wearing it
For these low winds I used a 600 W Eletric Motor . With two extra 100 W flexibel solar panels it made 2 knots at 200 Watt for 1.500 kg boat.
I thought in the opening shots you looked a little sunburned, then I saw your impression of Butch Cassidy a little later. Glad you found some wind.
That noise sounds like main sheet block rubbing shackle.
What is the screeching sound?
I told you that you would love the increased horse power of your motor when you needed it👍
Dead right and it takes us farther than I ever would have ventured in later videos
Still awesome ✊🏻🏴
what is the squeaking? one word.....grease you are the king of mariniers.
Thank you very much for the video sir. Good luck on your journey! Thank you for the informative videos. Please keep updating us.
Very welcome

It's the end of October, and there is still no condensation on WR

Both elements of that (bigger sail, smaller vane) would make the wind vane perform even worse.

You said end of September?
The videos are currently behind a few weeks.
@@RoversAdventure Ahhh ok. Thats what I wondered.
I am sure youre used to it by now but that continual squeeking from the rig would drive me mental.. 🙂
Sail area looks very small for light winds . Does gaff fig have any other sail options?
The boat will sail in very little wind, but in this case, there's no wind

Two knots of way in four knots of downwind air is ain't too shabby!
Motor noise beats the squeaking. Half throttle *?
Yes half throttle
Alan just curious as to how much fuel was consumed during this period?
Wouldn’t that screeching in the background make you a little crazy?

50 to 70 myself at 2knots .
