I saw this movie with my friend. I liked it and he loved it for different reasons. This is one of those rare low rated rotten tomatoes movies that I rate the same if not higher as the score. This movie succeeds it multiple things leaving me speechless. The interquate camera movement is some of the best I have seen in recent movies (since The Shape of Water maybe), the lighting in each shot is perfectly positioned and the color grading brings out the black colors and the composition is pretty fantastic. The characters are very simple and well established so seeing them in action adds clarity and suspence. The acting is great and Claire does the best with the limited character she is given. The plot is easy to follow, but this is where the problems begin. There are many plot holes and just underwritten character decisions. The atomic bomb plot thing is lame and doesn't bring out much suspence, that painting reveal thing does not make any sense, the cliches like 'building the 3d env to shoot dudes' is at this point laughable, that kid doesn't act like a human being and some more nitpicks emerge as I more think about it. But I had a ton of fun with it and that's all I wanted from this movie. The action set pieces sometimes without any guns are A+ craftsman ship (that's why my pal enjoyed the movie so much) and if the nit picks above got toned down I think it would be a 8/10 for me. For now it's a 6-5/10 for me. Still not nearly as bad as many LB users make it out to be.
I liked the Rooney Mara film a lot. I still don't know how I feel about Claire Foy as an actress. She's great on The Crown but I haven't been wowed by her yet.
I love the fincher film and also enjoyed the original 3. I so badly wanted to see fincher complete the trilogy and when I heard about this movie I was just bummed out. Then I saw the trailer in the theatre and just thought, wow we get this instead of girl who played with fire. It just looks like a generic action movie at this point.
I had a feeling this would be the issue as soon as I saw the trailer. What I really love about these books, even Spider’s Web, is that they are about two protagonists. Two characters on parallel paths that intersect at some point so we get a wide perspective of the world. I could tell from the trailer that they basically removed all of Mikael’s role. He is an equal co-lead in these books, not a sidekick. I get that Lisbeth is a popular character but the story works when you balance her strangeness with Mikael’s more normal and professional investigations. Instead of that, it sounds like they Sanitized Lizbeth a bit to make her the solo lead.

As a Swedish person, I got very annoyed with the attempt for the actors to have "swedish accents" and they all just sound german. They didnt do that in Finchers version.
@@Fork1 But what is proper English? The actress in real life has an over-the-top British accent that really stands out a lot. It would be more weird to have the character sound like Mary Poppins, than to just have an accent that fits the character's origin. Especially considering that her accent does sound Swedish, unless you're actually from Sweden. Not once did I think she sounded German.
Maybe they're Swedes as being a Swedish person Josefine you should know that Swedes are a North Germanic ethnic group native to Sweden and that could be the reason they sound Germanic?, or are you just saying you're from Sweden but aren't really from there?? In short if you are cool, if not then why lie.
@@harleynowland That's just silly. Being in a North Germanic ethnic group has nothing to do with accents. Not to mention that you are conflating "German" with "Germanic" which are very different things. She never said they sounded "Germanic", she said the sounded German, i.e. people from within the modern borders of Germany. Germanic is a whole set of languages, let alone accents. You think all Geramanic peoples have the same accent???

I like your mood here, Chris. You seem a lot more positive this time around compared to when you reviewed anything else new. Feels a lot like your old reviews. Great job.
I got that feeling when I saw the trailer. I was hoping that wasn't the case mostly because I do love the director who's attached to this. I enjoyed his Evil Dead remake and I really liked Don't Breathe and was excited to see what he can do with this. I know you've been really busy with those Halloween reviews but I would love to know if you saw Bed Times at the El Royale. Because I personally really loved it and I was just curious I'm what you thought!
Totally agree about what you said. It feels like everything that comes from those big studios is a product and not a film. There is no risk anymore. I want to see something like what nolan did for the batman films so amazingly.
I like Claire but I really wished they brought back Fincher, Craig & Mara. I really enjoyed that 2011 remake, great performances, great cinematography too. I was really hoping they'd do the trilogy over with them. Rooney really wanted to play Lisbeth again.
And Eva Gabrielssen who was Stig's long-time partner and the only one who should be writing any follow ups to his books hated Rooney Mara because she did not understand who Lisbet was. The one scene in the Fincher version where Craig and Mara (I'm not calling them Lisbet and Blomqvist because there was nothing remotely Lisbet or Blomqvist-y about them) had the love scene wasn't even remotely what Larsson wrote. In the original Swedish version and the book in that scene Lisbet mounts Blomqvist and remains on top. That preserves Listbet's dominance and allows her that power she wasn't allowed with either Buhurman or Teleborian. It was important that Lisbet remain on top during that scene and in the original she did. In the Fincher version he Americanized it by having Craig roll Mara onto the top of the mattress and the sex was in the missionary position with her on the bottom. Totally obliterated Lisbet's power and her needing to have that power over Blomqvist. That was preserved in the scene with Rapace and Nyqvist because they understood the source material. They didn't try to change it to suit a certain mindset that wouldn't understand the meaning of the scene. Oh and Robin Wright's fake British accent sucked. No one even tried to make it Swedish because Fincher is American. This is what my problem has been with the new Godzilla films and the dubbed versions of the originals. The mash up the original intent of the original work by forcing something on the remake that is not as it should be. I'll point to "Godzilla vs Mothra" from 1964 where according to the dubbed version, Mothra is a male. She's clearly a female. Once you muck up one part of the original intent, the intent changes into something it was never supposed to be. Going back to the Rapace/Nyqvist version of the film(s), they were way darker and the content was in tact in terms of the nature of the original location where it came from. Eva Gabrielssen had this to say of Mara, *_“Does she know what film she has been in? Has she read the books? Has she not had any coaching? Salander’s entire being represents a resistance, an active resistance to the mechanisms that mean women don’t advance in this world and in worst case scenarios are abused like she was.”_* By her own admission Mara states she was told not to read the books. Rapace not only read the books, but devoured them. She knew Lisbet's mindset because she's from the place where the books are set.
One thing I love about Lisbeth Salander was that she is a researcher and a hacker. She also uses her wits to a whole new level and I feared that this film will take the character out of her since they presented it as an action-thriller. Without those traits that has been established on the previous films, this film will be nothing but a lifeless shell....
Candy Chan she was also very introverted and had social issues. Whereas this version looks like she just kicks ass and takes names, etc. I love the character and books so I’m debating seeing it, but the trailers and this review give me major pause. Such a bummer Sony did this.
I loved Noomi Rapace's Lizbeth Salander. The I watched Fincher's remake and loved Mara too (still Noomi has a special place in my heart). This... This... Boh
When I watched the first (Swedish) dragon tattoo I just had it on in the background while I was doing other things, but before long I was completely engrossed. It was so different to anything I'd seen before, and Lisbeth quickly became one of my favourite movie characters of all time- capable but believable, genuinely damaged, good deep down but not shy about inflicting vicious justice on those that deserved it. To me Lisbeth made a mockery of all those squeaky clean movie heroes with their cosmetic flaws and manufactured tragic backstories. As much as I enjoyed the first two Nolan Batman movies, she made that character look like a boy scout. The two sequel movies were also fantastic, maybe even better than the first film. Then David Fincher did his remake of Dragon Tattoo and I was delighted to find that he and his crew completely did the original film justice. So Chris's review of this latest film is reaĺly sad to hear. It probably doesn't help that the material they used is not written by the original (now dead) author. A bland, safe movie with a bland, safe Lisbeth? I'll pass.
Yeah not sure what’s happened to them. Blade Runner aside, which was a gamble to franchise since the original is considered a masterpiece, etc, Sony has gone downhill. They’re business plan lately is to throw everything as the wall and see what sticks. And to milk whatever profitable properties they have until they’re no longer good.
I agree aside from putting The Real Ghostbusters on DVD in 2008, releasing the original Ghostbusters (1984) in theatres for its 30th anniversary in 2014 and producing some decent television shows such as The Goldbergs Sony seems to have lost it when it comes to the business side of things. I too am getting tired of Sony pumping out remakes of popular older movies that no one asked for. Is it really that difficult to come up with a new story idea?
Good point I hadn't even realized that while I was watching it about Mikael. He was too young that's the issue with his character. I was so caught up in the mindset of - I'm finally watching a new Girl with the dragon tattoo movie that I didn't really focus on the Mikael character that much. It does annoy me now thinking about how young his character was in this reboot cause you are right that's not who his character is.
Hey Chris I’d love to hear what you think of Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen is one of my favorites and I’ve heard very good things about it but would love to get your take on it
I don't blame any of the actors, they were all fine, but the problem IS the story. It is written by someone else and as much as the movie is alright, there's definitely nuances lost.. The most damning one - Lisbeth needs a getaway car. The kid stares at the Lambo and she like rolls her eyes as if "fine" and then they take it instead of Prius or whatev. Firstly, kid, your dad was shot and you got to see his corpse and you care about the bloody car? Secondly, Lisbeth, you are the embodiment of "leave me the fuck alone" but hey, this particular car model everyone salivates over will NOT draw any attention? I rest my case.
Just watched this last night and completely agree with EVERY point you raised. I did love, pun intended, the actress from Bladerunner 2049, Sylvia Hoeks...more please!
Hi Chris, can you make a review about Fma 2003 and Fma Brotherhood?I am not sure which one to watch and I would really like to hear your opinion about them.
this (rooney maras one) was my favourite christmas movie and i think the very first in my tradition to see a movie alone for christmas instead of sulking. it snowed and the mood was very suitable. i was still in high school and loved the darkness.
Chris, you should review the Department Q movies. They are very good, and tells the story of two detectives solving some brutal and disturbing cases. The movies are danish, which in my opinion makes a huge difference. In America, you completely Americanize your movies. Basically you make it less brutal so more people can watch it, and more money is earned. You know, the Hollywood thing. These movies are not holding back. They are not the most brutal movies, in terms of blood, but the plot doesn't hold back. Despite the very aggressive danish language, I think you'll love these movies. Currently the 4th and last one of these movies are in theatres, and it's called Journal 64. Haven't watched it yet, but I totally will.
Team Mara for me!!! I found her more compelling and tortured! She isn't begging the audience to sympathize or weep for her - she's better defined character! Repace was fantastic in her portrayal too! She set the tone and Mara raised the bar in my opinion!!!
More than seven years has passed since Fincher's adaptation was released. Whereas, less than two years passed between Oplev's and Fincher's adaptation.
I enjoyed the film, but felt the motivations for the characters were underdeveloped. If I hadn't seen the Swedish orignals, Lisbeth Salander's character would have felt totally flat to me. Blumkvist helping Salander also had no context but that established by the previous films. It also annoyed me that they made Blumkvist a young man
4:59 I noticed too that the actor who play Mikael Blomkvist looks younger than the original portraits of the character played by Mikael Blomkvist and Daniel Craig
I never actually liked Lizbeth in any version of these films. She starts out antagonist and while she does become more endearing she also becomes increasingly “superpowered” in the original stories as well.

What did you think of the fincher version?
No review for Bohemian Rhapsody?
It sucked.
There's your review.
Jonathan Pinz0n meh. It’s a C or C- movie

NostalgiNorden No it doesn’t you moron. It was great. So fuck your short comment.
100% agree on ALL points!!
@@realhousewifeoftransylvania1.0 yeah it's a very disappointing situation.

People WITHIN Germany have different accents and people in various countries within the same ethnic groups sometimes don't even speak the same language.
4:50 - "good direction"
4:53 - " poor direction"
Haha yeah, that was contradicted.
as a filmmaker myself I'd say what it meant is that the directing itself was fine as in technical but but the direction which the story was taken was poor since they gave it a Jamesbondian feel to it.

good review chris. im sad the didnt continue David Fincher's version. I love the grit of the first one. Turning stories like this into movies for the masses ruin what truly makes it enjoyable. Loved the horror movie reviews last month man.

No Bohemian Rhapsody review?
the sleeve is coming along nice chris!

It's been 7 years since Fincher's Dragon Tattoo?
9 Years since the Swedish one?
Wow. Wowwwwwww.
Damn where all the time gone.
@Blade Runner Holy shit. You can say holy shit!
So my sister describing how school went?
What did she say?

I loved Noomi Rapace's Lizbeth Salander. The I watched Fincher's remake and loved Mara too (still Noomi has a special place in my heart). This... This... Boh
"I want to feel sad..." - Chris Stuckman
I'll pass.
Sony's kind of weird right now. Ever since Spider-Man 3, they've just gone in a weird turn.
Let me remind you they made Blade Runner 2049
Yeah not sure what’s happened to them. Blade Runner aside, which was a gamble to franchise since the original is considered a masterpiece, etc, Sony has gone downhill. They’re business plan lately is to throw everything as the wall and see what sticks. And to milk whatever profitable properties they have until they’re no longer good.
Fabricio Rodas ummm no that was Warner Bros
Fabricio Rodas ummm no that was Warner Bros

I grew up in the 90s

Hi Chris, can you make a review about Fma 2003 and Fma Brotherhood?I am not sure which one to watch and I would really like to hear your opinion about them.
Fincher's film is better than the originals, I'm sorry. Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are also better suited to there roles than the Swedish actors.
this (rooney maras one) was my favourite christmas movie and i think the very first in my tradition to see a movie alone for christmas instead of sulking. it snowed and the mood was very suitable. i was still in high school and loved the darkness.
This is like Ellen Degeneres with the dragon tattoo
Nice comparison to James Bond Movie especially the Pond Scene with the Bike. Love your reviews, they are true and honest. Thanks, you saved my time.
Team Mara for me!!! I found her more compelling and tortured! She isn't begging the audience to sympathize or weep for her - she's better defined character!
Repace was fantastic in her portrayal too! She set the tone and Mara raised the bar in my opinion!!!

Chris, what of Suspiria? Bad Times at the El Royale? Please!
Chris, you should review Overlord! I went and saw it yesterday and it was SO FUN!
Chris. When are you going to review Suspiria?
Thought he was going to say "I have it here.. so if you want the extended..." "come on by and you can watch it" hah
Would you review the new Suspiria?
Will you consider reviewing all the James Bond Films? Starting with Dr. No of course!
I never actually liked Lizbeth in any version of these films.
She starts out antagonist and while she does become more endearing she also becomes increasingly “superpowered” in the original stories as well.
