- We visit Lee Malia of Bring Me The Horizon to talk about his guitar sounds and gear at the band’s HQ.
Life too short for long UA-cam videos? See ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ info below.
Welcome! In this episode, Dan and I load the TPS charabanc and head north to visit Lee Malia of Bring Me The Horizon. In case you’re not aware, BMTH are a phenomenally successful band who formed in 2004, having released six principle studio albums and won a slew of awards along the way. As we write this they are both Brit and Grammy nominated for 2020.
During the interview we get an insight into Lee’s world of huge production for giant stages and how that determines the gear and tone choices for his rig. We also get a look at Lee’s signature Epiphone guitars.
Massive thanks to Lee for making the time for us, and also to Joey for the tech support and help. What an awesome day!
Enjoy the episode!

Lee malia looking the same since 2006
Bro is permanently 15
They are vampires, they will never die
Fast forward 10 years he'll be there, still looking 15 and still wearing the beanie.
As a tone junkie who's a big fan of Lee, this video is a dream.
Same
Same insane
Me too bud
where is seamus tho, rip the creatures GBNF
I spoke to the dude once, he was using an OCD as his boost then. What a nice guy
This is why TPS is great. They get artists in regardless of genre to analyse tone. BMTH isn't my cup of tea much like Mick and Dan, but this was fascinating. I feel like Lee got a lot out of it too.
Thanks Guy. We were both genuinely fascinated by Lee’s take on things.... not least discovering once again that there’s way more that unites guitar players than divides us. Les Paul, Klon, Marshall, volume. We are all siblings at the end of the day!
I agree. Lee's genre isn't mine, but the process and mechanics are fascinating
@Klaus Ebner Your comment is absolute dogshit. Just because you're not into the music, no need to be mean about it.
@Klaus Ebner who do you like?
@Klaus Ebnerplease tell us what the correct music to listen to is since you're clearly an expert on the matter.
Haha. Lee briefly explaining what a breakdown is to Dan and Mick is the cutest thing ever.
Wow! When it was?
I mean, which timecode?
@@matvejkap 10:15
@@atticmichael lol, thanks 😂
Yeah all they can play is da blues
Lee once borrowed my 74 strat to play a couple of songs in our local when he was about 17 he was amazing . He played in a cover band with my best mate Harry .
Wow! That's amazing!
I assume this was when I was playing in the band Dave. He was indeed amazing, a dream to play with...the best few months of my life. Though playing with you Dave is a close second!!
metallica, right? curtis ward was in it, too!
Lee's playing in this video:
0:04 - Anthem
0:39 - Shadow Moses
1:16 - The House Of Wolves
26:07 - wonderful life
33:47 - Anthem (again)
36:43, 36:56 - Sleepwalking
39:11 - Fuck
46:26 - sugar honey ice & tea
47:47 - nihilist blues
48:22 - Blessed With A Curse
1:08:33 , 1:09:07 - in the dark
thanks this really helps
@@seflw9666 you're welcome 😊
thanks!
you missed sleepwalking's breakdown just before the 37min mark
@@lucasgermain11 thanks, man, fixed
Took me 50 minutes to realise that the riveted steel behind them on the wall is a giant 'BMTH'.
Awesome right
i think that's bulb and not rivet, and its probably from Drown music video, cmiiw thank you
Yogi Yudoasmoro before that it was in their 2012 reading and Leeds show I believe
@@joshs5135 Correct, I can't confirm about the reading and Leeds show, but it sure was on stage back in the days, around 2012 and 2013
@@yogiyudo2453 and it was in Anthem music video, which was earlier than Drown music video, so, I think more correct is saying that it is from Anthem music video
Totally underrated guitarist, I was totally impressed with his depth of knowledge and how intentional he is with his tone, my fav ep so far!
So lee played anthem in 2020? Wow
exactly what i was thinking!
He even played Fuck here
Lee: this is what I like but I don't know why
TPS: here's why
I think that the fact that Lee has no idea why he likes what he likes is kind of awesome. He likes what he likes, and that’s good enough for him. I’ve been obsessed with his tone since BMTH’s There is a Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It album. It’s so meaty and punchy.
I don't know the band Lee is from, Bring Me The Horizon, so I checked them out on Spotify. I was very surprised. The music did not sound at all like what I was expecting after listening to him in this video. The newest album is very electronica, and actually pretty chill. Some of the other albums have heavy stuff, but it's not by any means a strictly heavy sounding band. They changed quite a bit over the years. Very good episode, guys. Very enjoyable.
they've changed A LOT, not a single band has gone through a more drastic change than BMTH imo, they've gone from deathcore to electronic pop. all tracks on their demo album and the first two "official" albums (Count Your Blessings and Suicide Season) consist of extremely heavy (for the time) songs, bar a couple exceptions. really interesting band with a lot of fun tracks, even though most of their newer stuff isn't my cup of tea
@@thepigeon6798 metallica: hold my beer.
@@antenna7002 BMTH has changed FAR more than Metallica man.
@@thepigeon6798 So thr first two albums aren't comsidered heavy now..? wtf man
@@antenna7002 i mean every metallica song is in E. And they haven't changed a bit, not like this is a bad thing
Ten times more informative and interesting than these technical blues guitarists you some times feature. The guy from Radiohead, Blur and now this, music not just a guitarist. Ace, learned loads and a genuine insight.👌
Thanks for the opinion Mark. Glad you enjoyed it. Just remember that for every one of you there’s some other dude who loves the technical blues guitarists. It’s all good man - maybe try to see it like that?
@@ThatPedalShow Horses for courses. That's the best way of looking at it
Lee reminds me of The Edge....the ambient, the “less is more” playing but refrigerator doors of gear...
when you record so much different stuff it's almost necessary. and, lets be honest if we were playing stadiums we'd bring truckloads too
AttakaiMusic FACTS... if I had the means, I’d have vintage everything WITH spares lol
At 38:31...Mick’s glance at the camera after he realizes he’s said, “When you’re spanking it that hard,” and no one else has heard it...just gold.
I love Lee Malia’s playing, he reminds me that guitar isn’t always technicality and more about taste. Such a chill guy
In some hidden places you can still hear Lee Malia playing some old bmth's songs
From an old time metalhead that watches your show, thanks for representing the metal.
There is, actually, a whole lot you could talk about with metal tones. It's not just all Metal Zone sounds. There's tighter sounds, there's thick sounds, there's vintage sounds, there's gained-out sounds. Here's an idea for a show: 5150 style amp vs JCM 800 style amp. You could explore how each reacts differently to the different gain types (boost, drive, distortion, fuzz). You could explore how they sound with different distortion sources (amp vs pedal, or a blend of the two). And even though it's all probably been done before on dozens of other channels it would be nice to see it with That Pedal Show's enthusiasm for the exploration of tone.
What a lovely guy. Soft spoken, humble, genuine.
Lee's sound is monstrous even in the video, can't imagine it in the room. Man! Excellent video, haven't clicked so fast in a LONG time!
P.S. Lee mentioning the looks like a 16 year old thing was fantastic
One of the most influential guitarists for me. Always love to hear what Lee has to say.
Ben Koelle Me too!!
I love these types of TPS episodes because Mick's inner journalist starts to come out, keeping the conversation moving and asking interesting questions from which the viewer wants to hear a perspective of the artist.
Keep up the great work, friends!
I thought this was some kind of joke to start with but it was heaven for me. I love that pedal show and I love heavy music. Thank you for being open minded.
Gotta love open minded people
25:07 fuck me, lee's sound is beautiful man. took me right back to 2010.
unexpected crossover, cool though
This is one of the best guitar rig videos on UA-cam. Amazing how much thought he's put into his rig, when most metal guys would stick a tube-screamer in front of a 5150 and call it a day 👍 Gonna be trying my Klon clone for high gain now!
My two takeaways from this video: 1) The Klon circuit is just amazing. It can do so many things in so many different situations and always sounds fantastic. 2) There is a reason I love my Friday mornings and TPS. Dan and Mick continue to impress with these deep dives into touring musicians gear. It doesn't matter what the genre is, tone is tone and they are going to get to the bottom of it with smiles on their faces. Shout out to Lee as well, seems like a great guy.
Stuart Narduzz I use a Soul Food on heavy tunes (I’m just in a cover band) and It gives the mid focus I want.
A few takeaways I have from watching this whole video.
1.) I love seeing Dan and Mick's enthusiasm when it comes to a style that they don't know. It's refreshing to see people with a passion to not just be the teacher, but to take learning just as seriously. Absolutely phenomenal interview!
2.) Every interview I've ever seen of Lee he is very awkward and reserved, and that's probably just a character thing, but despite this one starting that way by the end he really opened up and got excited about what he was talking about with you guys and that was great to see. Not just that, but a testament to how great you two are at what you do.
All that being said, keep up the good work gents, and I'm hoping to seeing more "heavy" music end up on this channel in the future!
one takeaway I got from this video: everyone could use a "Joey" in their life
It appears that Lee store his gear in the belly of a Russian freighter! Now that's METAL! Likable geezer as well!
Very Metal! as Vivian's jacket used to say.
He looks like he works on one too rofl
It spells BMTH
Wasn't expecting that, but also wasn't expecting it to be as interesting as it turned out to be.
Kudos for having a guest who isn't 100 years old or have been dead for 50! Me like
Hahahahah!!!!
@@ThatPedalShow Sorry guys I couldn't resist... For compensation, I do have a Fender Dual Showman Reverb 135W UL head and I grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix.
That ambient tone that he uses is so remarkable; Whenever I hear that space-y tone. It reminds me of BMTH
What a charming lad. Wasn't sure at first that I'd make it to the end. But I was completely won over. I learned things, and kept pausing to go down rabbit holes. Great episode!
I can only echo the comments: this is why TPS is great: even with guitarists who’s music doesn’t interest me.... the show highlights what makes them tick, which is ALWAYS interesting.
another cool show guys!
dan and mick really brought their best shirt game for this one
It was freezing!
@@ThatPedalShow , what is it with metal and cold? All the metal bands from Norway and such. Maybe the giant stacks and colliding air molecules keep them warm. :-)
@@ThatPedalShow Aye, lads. It's grim here up North. :D
I loved this episode so much!! thanks Mick and Dan thanks!
while other bands still chugging at the lowest tune on the 7/8 strings guitar to get heavier, he choose to ring the most badass and super heavy breakdown's riff i've ever heard since the new metal era.....what an amazing player and songwriter
Love the 'Interview & Rig Tour' format!
I love the way he feels his way through every inch of his tone. It was great to hear Lee talk about it.
One of my top favorite TPS episodes. I come back time and again. Brilliant!
Thanks, guys! Love the Show and can't wait to tune in every week. I've been waiting to see some rack setups on the show, and this was excellent! I would love to see an episode about presence; that brief conversation left me wanting more.
Lee is an amazing musician, but there's so few interviews that go into any depth online, so really happy you guys met up with him :D
Great interview guys. Really interesting how Lee uses the various parts of his rig especially something like the synth 9. Thanks Mick, Dan and Lee.
Enjoyed this, best show for a while guys. Damn, that Explorer looked sweet. Want one!
REALLY enjoyed this interview with Lee! Such a humble guy! Really cool, that even though artists/players may be separated by genres of music, that at the foundation/core level everyone is really the same! Always have an open mind to learn new things! Also refreshing to see that he actually uses he production model guitars (with slight mods of course). Thanks for the interview, you guys rock!
One of the most informative detailed guitar videos I've ever watched. In a very good way.
Lee is a beast! Amazing Sound!
Genuinely, thank you guys for your show. As a blues, country, prog and metal guitarist, you are the only channel that grabs all of my attention. You somehow never have an episode that's drags on. I learn something almost every time, and you have expanded my music taste tremendously. #bestchannelonyoutube
This guy is really generous with his time and thoughts. He is really up for sharing his approach and it's very refreshing.
ive been a bmth fan since 07, I've been waiting for an interview this in-depth for a long time. Lee is such a nice guy. really down to earth.
OMG an hour of Lee content! Great video! (and it was uploaded on my birthday! Yay!)
I love Lee. I like how you guys can keep the whole episode running without any awkward moment. Lee is usually quiet but in this video you made him open up more to share many interesting things. I'm new to electric guitar and I learned a lot from this episode alone. (Yes, I just learned that I hold pick the same way Lee did... and it's the wrong way to hold one. Oops. Also kudos for the timestamps. They help a lot) I might get his signature one day. Anyway I found it adorable when he said that people at the club thought he's 16 lol. Forever baby-face! Good to hear that apart from touring with his band he still does cover and plays at the club from time to time. Now I kinda wish that he would release some cover video for fun or start a class, it would be a dream come true.
Great job, guys!
When you guys said this didnt get many views on the Q+A I decided to come here and put this on a loop.
I love TPS and Ive been watching since 2017 but most of the stuff you cover are for genres that I dont really play - although I dont play heavy music anymore it was awesome to see Lee on the show. Id love to see more artists bigger with younger audiences on the show - Arctic Monkeys would be a great one for me. Cheers from NZ!
Excellent episode! I love that you guys are getting out of your normal world and open to learning from different genres. And kudos to Lee for using his EARS to determine what he plays and how he plays.
Love the "Rig Rundown" format !!
This is one of my favourite episodes, I love Lee's attitude towards his sound and hearing about his journey moving from small venues to huge spaces.
Also I love the fact he still goes and plays covers down the working men's club like the rest of us!
Streaming BMTH this weekend. Thx once again for broadening my horizons, TPS.
Just got to seeing this. Fantastic show fellas! Cheers!
Awesome show , again!! Lee was a pleasure! Very talented and great fellow! Thanks to you all. Will definitely check BMTH out!
Breath of fresh air. I say that as an ancient guitarist of near fossil status. Great video.
During isolation I’ve watched this about 99 times. I’ve always loved Lee’s playing and his method of getting tones. Thanks.
As a avid metal fan and a regular TPS viewer for years, thanks for this episode!!!!! This is definitely my cup of tea. 🤘🤘
Never heard of his band or heard him play, but really enjoyed Lee’s story! Thanks for sharing!
This was amazing, thankyou TPS
I was another one that wasn't sure if I was gonna enjoy this or not, but it was just as brilliant as any of your other shows with artists. Every one of these guys have so much to teach, just from developing their own style. Lee seems like a really cool and down to earth guy too. Keep it up guys, you really never cease to surprise and amaze me.
Cheers to Lee and the guy who designed his rig! Massive tone. And Lee seems so humble, class act.
Awesome interview. Thanks!!
Lee seems like a really cool, hardworking dude. Thank you guys for taking us along to meet him. Like I said on instagram, I haven't listened to the band in years, but I always love the perspective you guys get from your guests. I will give their new material a listen. Oddly, my tastes evolved to enjoy the even more heavy and absurd technical death metal, and other noisy sub-genres. When I pick up my guitar though, I'm usually playing bluesy rock stuff.
As someone who has grown with BMTH since their first album, I have always dreamed of this video. I can tell you guys are genuine in your interests and didn't write him off as some typical "active pickup 5150 player". You really took the time to know his rig, and more importantly, him as a player/person. Lee is always so quiet in interviews but you could really see him come alive here. He couldn't stop talking about his guitar and tone and his passion really shows. You guys definitely got a subscribe from me and I cant wait to go through and watch all of your videos!
This is awesome. I love Dan & Mick's enthusiasm for it even though it's not their usual thing.
This old boomer never heard of him. Now, after this, I have. Great! As usual, a great episode with some great insights to sounds that I'm unfamiliar with.
I'm so glad you found this band be careful they're easy to get addicted to!
very inspiring interview. I've always loved his playing and sounds, and finally we have a long form interview to hear him talk about his tones. Awesome video. My band @gloomchild is playing our second show ever tomorrow and this has given me a lot of inspiriation for the show. BMTH for life
I grew up listening to BMTH in high school a year after Suicide Season came out. I was 17 back then. Been a fan of them ever since
Fantastic video guys. This is why you are one of the best guitar shows on the web, because you're not pigeonholed into one thing. Great to hear from Lee and about a style that I don't necessarily play. Thanks!
I enjoy this episode so much
guys , when he played the riff at 34:00 you both lit up like schoolkids! that was, for me, the very best moment.
one of the reasons why i continue to watch this channel...watching mick and dan do interviews....and literally looking and acting like kids in a candy shop....the authenticity is awesome...
It may not be our thing. but this young mans approach to guitar is fascinating . An 80 on the E/C string. OMG. My favorite episode of that pedal show . Love his Epiphone. I want one.
Super nice guy. It’s great too se you guys on location. A refreshing change. Keep up the great work.
This guy gets a great sound, sort of a Rabea vibe on the riffage. Really enjoyed this, shot great too. Thanks guys
fantastic episode! i didn't know the band at all, i'm glad you go out of your way to meet people outside of your genre of music you usually do it's amazing!
I really like the fact that Lee is talking about using real tube amps, the dynamics it provides, and using less gain, and standard scale guitars! Myself, i'm playing in C standard, not metal at all, i just love playing really love, but i really don't enjoy playing a baritone scale, or even a 7 string neck.
There is a sound to a standard scale guitar tuned down that you don't find on others, also the playability is still the same, nothing changes but the key. I think Ariel posen mentionned something similar in your episodes with him.
Really really enjoying this episode!
Awesome episode guys. Been a massive fan of Bring Me the Horizon and Lee’s playing for years. His style of playing really helped me to find my place in my own bands.
This sound is not in my wheelhouse but I learned SO much. I love the variety and the new sounds. Inspires me to broaden my horizons. Great episode!!!!
Brilliant episode, nice change being away from TPS HQ and you both doing something different in a new locale, loved Lee's playing and on the strength of it just purchased the last 3 BMTH cd's !, loving the new music, it would be a great idea if you guys did the same again now and then with other guitar players, variety is the spice of life !! :)
I wish every interview was this good. The tone is amazing and he is a unique musician.
This was fascinating! I do not generally listen to BMTH or other bands of this genre, but this episode was fantastic!
Brilliant interview/rundown/enlightenment, fellas. Thanks so much. Rarely do I stop and watch anything for more than 10 minutes, but this really held me for the full 80 mins. Cheers.
Ah cheers mate :))))
that was awesome. such a humble guy. I can't imagine the music he hears in his head.
Lee is one of my biggest references in music and i listen the four firsts albuns of BMTH basically every week in last 8 years.
Thanx guys for this amazing interview, this is a gift for the fans!

Greatings from Brazil =)
I feel like one of the few people who watches TPS and loves BMTH. What a brilliant interview. I especially enjoyed the open mindedness shown when given an insight into unfamiliar genres. Just brilliant.
i learned a lot on this episode regarding pick attacks and presence as it relates to gain. thank you!
By far the band taking the most risks right now. So refreshing to hear. Smashed it guys x
What a gem of a video! How come I've never seen it before? Loved to find out all the little details about Lee's playing. Now I know what makes him even more special) Thank you so much for this, TPS!
Thanks Dan and Mick, it's always a learning experience on your channel and I appreciate all you guys do for the guitar world. I've had two serious concussions, both nearly fatal, so between the constant tinnitus and the other symptoms, I cannot listen to Lee's heavier stuff for any length of time before migraines kick in. His cleans and ambients though are really nice and were very surprising to hear from him. The stereotypical "death metal" player he is definitely not and his variety of playing was nice. Once again I learned that most of the time the gain is not as much as you think and once again the "Klon" is absolutely amazing!
it's a joy to see these guys be amazed by the sound of a genre very different to their usual stuff.
Great interview , and damn those Time Stamps :D keep up the good work
Just a note of appreciation for some of the really beautiful shots and lighting in this video. I also loved the convo and got a lot out of it too. Thanks Gents and thanks Lee
Thank you Leigh! Simon is the man!
Big fan lads! I would love to hear you expand in true TPS fashion as to the definition of, and uses of presence in amps/eq. This is something I've always been fascinated with... I think that for many of us gear heads there is a slight disparity between our understanding of presence and its use within amps versus other, seemingly simple tweekable amp settings. I've seen others go down the hole, but I want to see a full on TPS excavation...
I KNEW I STUCK TO THIS CHANNEL FOR A GOOD REASON LEE IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE GUITARISTS
I love the lee malia signature epi's ! Besutiful.
Great job on a thorough artist and interview.
