I love ❤️ my Pelikans especially my M1005 Demonstrator fountain pen ✒️ !!! I love how my inks look swishing through my clear pen barrel. It’s like having a different pen each time using different color inks with my Pelikan M1005 demonstrator.

You have good taste! The Visconti Homo Sapiens tops my grail list, with the Pelikan M800 not far below it. The M1000 is a tiny bit awkward in my hand, so I think the M800 will be my Goldilocks.

Thank you for another excellent review. Thank you also for your impassioned criticism of the price disparity between the U.S. and foreign markets. You certain spoke for me, and I am sure for many others as well.
It had slipped my mind that the M-1000 was introduced in 1997. That is the year I bought my first one, so I got into the M-1000 at its beginning. I am usually the last one to discover anything, so this circumstance is a rarity in my life. - And I did NOT pay in excess of $1K for the pen!!!
I LOVE the physical size of the pen, and of the marvelous nib. I have only two M-1000's, a green striated one with a F nib and an all black one with a M nib. Both nibs write a bit wet. And I do not actually write with these pens. I literally PAINT my letters as with a brush. Those nibs improve my penmanship immeasurably, while being a sheer joy to use. Although my MB 149's are fun to use, there is something almost mystical about these danged M-1000 nibs. If/when asked about Pelikan products, I highly recommend them - with, of course, the price caveat.

Though I agree to support US retailers when possible but when price difference is so drastic between markets, you really cant expect customers to not save $300+ by purchasing from elsewhere. Pelikan needs to have consistent prices between markets but unfortunately until they do, customers in the US such as myself will continue to buy from non US retailers to save a lot of money that can be put to other great fountain pens.

Thanks for this. I have one that I got in the 1980s for, I believe, about $250 in the US (what most of my "good" pens cost then), and thought it might become my favorite because I do like a "big" pen. Thicker pens are generally more relaxing to work with, than squeezing those little skinny pens. But I had to admit, the girth of this one crossed a line for me - it feels like I should be gripping it with my fist - so I went back to the M800, along with the MB 149 and others that size. But it sure is a beauty. If someone is considering this purchase, I would advise them, if at all possible, to find the opportunity to actually try using one first.

oh my goodness PBR - YES!!!!! Thank God someone with some clout was able to say that "the Pelikan issue" is more than a "minor inconvenience!" I love Pelikan pens and they make sense at the European price. They do NOT make sense at the American price. Buying them from an American retailer is the equivalent of saying, "Just let someone fart in your eye, sure you can go to Appelboom, but if you're loyal and if you're a good pen enthusiast... you'll let me fart in your eye." That being said my heart goes out to our retailers. I love the people at Goulet, Goldspot, and Pen Chalet (among others) but daaaaang bro.... I don't want pink-eye.

Japanese pens are crazy expensive in Europe from import tariffs targeting Japan urged by EU pen manufacturers. Pelikan prices in US may reflect a similar factor.

My best gaming years were online Quake as a clan member (not very good either 😂) and then Counter Strike online, but that got bad cus of the cheat bots. Most annoying! 😠
I’ve often looked at M1000’s but just can’t buy one. I want something that I can carry around and not worry about as well as being great, so I got a lava Homo Sapiens Bronze Age with the cash. I had one very bad Pelikan experience with a ‘Blue O Blue’ years ago and that’s put me off really. Good review 😃👍🏻

Customers should be speaking to Chartpak if they have issue with the US price. The “harm” to US retailers is from the Chartpak’s markup that’s killing Pelikan here. If US retailers stop carrying Pelikan then Chartpak is to blame for killing their own market due to greed. I’m a Skyrim, Baldur’s Gate, Onward gamer

My man, isn’t the M300 in the Souveran line!? It certainly deserves to be. Of the 15+ Pelikans of all eras I’ve had and gotten rid of over the years, the mighty little M320 with its 14k fine nib is the one I regret selling the most. 😔

Thank you for this review, I like it very much. I am no PenBoyRoy, but I do have a large accumulation of fountain pens from a number of brands. From that experience, I can say getting a nice writing fountain pen is more a matter of luck than design, regardless of brand or price. However, you can improve your chances of getting a good one by buying a Pelikan fp. Thank you again.

I am not surprised you have to pay more in the US for an European pen, there has to be shipping and import fees and the european vat we all here have to pay. And it works in the reverse, I would never buy anything pen related from the US anymore as the shipping fees, the vat and the customs fees easily add up to more than 30% extra on the initial cost you paid. So sadly we small folk have to pay for stupid international shopping regulations ( custom, vat and import tax).

If an american can buy the pen from an EU retailer for $700 dollars, but the American retailer sells it to another american for $1000...
That says that the American retailer is the problem. It's up to them to get it right and/or fix the issue.
The buyer is only responsible to their wallet.

There is an old myth that describes the logo that you refer to as "A big bird eating a small bird" as quite the opposite; The big bird sitting there ready to be partially eaten by the chick, hacking away at its throat and slurping its lifeblood. Of course made very cute and fluffy as the years went by. But check out the original family crest. "Vulning Pelican" is good search words there.
On the games... I have very nostalgic memories of Midtown Madness 2 on the XBox. That was such a blast!

the Japanese Pens (Pilot/Sailor/Platinium) have the same situation here in Europe as, in Your discription, the Pelikan in America. I have to pay, for example, double the price for a Sailor ProGear 21K (350+€) in Germany while I could get one via Ebay from Japan for half the price. the same is for Pilot 823 etc. No idea why. Pelikan is really nice, I write with M400s and won't go out without them. M800/1000 is for me too heavy due to the metal piston component (although I have heard there is an 3rd party aluminium replacment which reduce the backweight significantly). Nice video and thanks.

You are right about the massive price difference. I live in Germany, and luckily I like the Fountain pens here. Ordering from outside the EU is expensive. Not sure what kind of sale they had today but I ordered the Black version with a Medium nib for half the price you are talking about here. I love my M800 redstripe with Broad nib. I hope I enjoy this one as well. Great review.

I've always wanted an M1000, but even though green is my favorite color I've just never liked the stripes w/ black cap. I think I'll hold out until I can afford an M1000 Raiden(some day!). Do table top games count for being a gamer? My favorite childhood game would be Command and Conquer Red Alert, or maybe stoned Tony Hawk. I'd guess you would like something high energy/run and gun like a first person shooter, so maybe Call of Duty? or Halo? Great review , thanks!

I came over to fountain pens from pocket knife collecting. Most of my knives cost more than my most expensive pens. I haven’t purchased a new knife in quite a while because I’m no longer ok with the price gouging. For that same reason, I will not buy a Pelikan from any US retailer. I did buy a used M400 through eBay which writes fabulously, so I would love to have an M600 or M800 - but never for the US retail price.

  • @martypines9704

Great review. Thankfully I live in Europe, so the pricing is not a problem - it's still a lot of money, but it represents good value for such an amazing pen. There currently seems to be a significant shortage of Pelikans (M1000, M800 and M600) - I suppose working from home, being bored and cutting down on commuting costs must be driving the good people of the UK online seeking pen perfection. And with the M800 and M1000, they'll get it.

  • @stephanfeinen3923
    @stephanfeinen3923 3 роки тому

I've settled for an M600 as my largest Pelikan as the M800 is a bit to heavy for my liking and the M1000... well, that's just a monster. I have several 400 (vintage and new) and those are also very fine writers for me. The pricing in the US reminds me of the japanese pen price making. At home those are rather reasonable priced but if you want to buy them from an official retailer out of Japan, they are very expensive. So I bought my Pilot, Platinum and Sailor pens on ebay from private sellers in Japan. Those sellers sometimes also offer models only intended for the japanese market (i.e. inexpensive models with steel nibs instead of gold ones). Most Pelikan models offered in Germany also have much lower prices than in the US (but still cost significant amounts of money).
Prices for used/vintage Pelikans on ebay have risen a lot during the last months as there are more and more people with unspent travel money ready to be spent for anything collectible.

You seem to not consider tax laws. Europe has a VAT tax that I am sure get tagged on to the pen when they sell to US distributors. (I don't know or actually care for sure.) Plus there may be import tariffs and of course shipping fees to the US. The lower price is Europe may be before taxes and fees?? What is the actual final price to the customer in Europe??
But whatever, 'free markets' rule. This is just another example of how gov't screws everything up that they touch.

@@wbhurt I don’t know, I don’t have a Raden. But I don’t think they are the same. The regular Pelikan Pens don’t really seem to have a lacquer on them. More just like polished plastic. Whereas my M815 has some kind of coating on the parts where the stripes are.

@@herrkeks8509 interesting. I have a M800 Grand Place. I'll have to go inspect it closely and see if it has any scratches. I really baby it. Thanks for the reply.

@@herrkeks8509 OH NO! My M800 does have wear! It's barely visible at this point but it is there. I've had the pen for about 3 years and keep it in a soft leather case, and baby it when I use it. It shows up as a slightly duller polish where the cap covers the barrel. Gentle buffing did not remove it. dang that's super disappointing. I assume that means it will get worse with time. Oh well, glad to know now so i can adjust my expectations. Maybe the pen will get more use because I'll be less worried about minor damage :)

@@wbhurt On the black parts with a flash light I can see tiny surface scratches just from sliding it in and out of pen cases. On the site right at the edge of the piston to the end of the pen. On the Palladium plated cap band I also see in normal light less shiny spots. They are were they touch the inside fabric wall of the pen case. I slide it in always in the same direction and so I got 4 lines from each wall of the case. The fabric didn’t seem rough, but apparently it was more that the ones in other cases, sadly it is the cap of my favorite M1005. :(

$300 or less for a M1000? I live in Germany and can't think of any way to legally get a M1000 for $300 (250€). For that price you not even get the nib alone.
@PenBoyRoy: Please share your source for that price.
A M1000 in Germany will cost you around 450€ ($550, always inclunding vat), at official retailers 500€ ($605).
Add shipping cost and margin for the distributor and $800 is absolutely resonable!
