Thank you for watching. I hope you have a lovely weekend. Happy Easter! For more, visit my corresponding blogpost dailyconnoisseur.blogspot.com/2019/04/dressing-up-for-no-reason-ten-item.html Also, please note: whenever I discuss this topic, people tend to get upset and offended. If that's you, just remember that some women are in a place where this message speaks to them and others aren't. That's OK! I hope we can all support each other on whatever journey we are on. This is one of my passions so I speak up about it. Thanks, as always, for your support. Love, Jennifer

I wear dresses or smart trousers everyday for work. One of my colleagues mentioned that she'd like to wear smarter clothes to work but was too embarrassed because people would say 'why are you so dressed up?' I told her it only takes a couple of days and people stop commenting. Just take the plunge and wear all those nice dresses you've got in your wardrobe. She did, and guess what? She got promoted!

I dress up every day and I certainly don’t apologize for it. I think that when people make comments about us ladies who dress up it’s because they feel uncomfortable about the way they look. But what they don’t realize is we dress up for ourselves not for them, and we don’t necessarily worry about what they’re wearing. Dressing up as my rebellion against the casual dumbing down in our society. It is my statement that I refuse to conform to the norms of slovenliness and lack of formality and respect. I don’t care if people think I’m old fashion either

I dress up every day and I find that people automatically assume I’m more capable, more of a leader and they listen to what I have to say. It definitely commands more respect and leads to having more people turn to me for my help or advice. People assume you are capable and have everything together when you look like someone who can “Adult”

I was born in Los Angeles in the 50's and my mom always wore a clean dress, freshly ironed apron, and her red lipstick everyday. Her home was immaculate and she was a busy wife/mother/sister/daughter/ active PTA member/scout leader, etc., and always looked put-together and self-assured. I really think there's something to this!

When people make comments, I always tell them that "I have all these cute clothes I never wear so I decided to wear some today!" People usually agree with me and some even say I've inspired them to do the same. This way is much friendlier and way less awkward.

Hello Jennifer, I’ve been waiting all morning to see this! I love dressing with my best clothes each day and not leaving beautiful pieces hanging to gather dust. I was thinking about this as I cleaned yesterday, I felt good cleaning in my best, doing the best I can with everything I do. I believe we carry ourselves and feel better when we have that mentality. Regarding yoga pants, most women don’t realize what they look like in those kind of pants or how their underwear shows through a lot of them. I wish each person would bend over and have a picture taken for them to see what everyone else sees. My friend’s husband did this and she was horrified. Making videos, it’s easy to get a front row seat as to how we really look and has helped me choose my wardrobe accordingly. I appreciate your encouragement for other women who WANT to improve in this area. The way you worded this was wise🌹

I have always been told that I dress up too much. And that I always look put together. There for awhile it was a huge topic when I showed up to places. I turned into the center of attention. That was not my goal. I was taught at an early age "That you will never be able to get that first impression back." My mother's words of wisdom. I'm not going to lie, but I went to the store to try to find more casual clothing. And to be honest I wasn't being true to myself. So, I'm going to be the best version of myself every day and dress in what makes me feel great. Ie. Dresses and skirts. Thank you for making me feel that it is okay to want to look presentable!

Lynnette, I tried jeans last year and couldn't do it, so I understand not being true to yourself. There is a beauty to a person who is dressed authentically to their style, not the trends. Thanks for your sharing.

Yes! I can really relate to this. It's not my intention to draw attention to myself but in the casual society, it naturally happens if you dress up.

Oh, Lynette, I am so glad you went back to dressing true to yourself. When I was raising my children there was a woman who came to our park days (we homeschooled the children) who was very "put together." She was tasteful, classic, dramatic, and very colorful. She was more dressed up than any of us, but I loved seeing her so beautiful and comfortable with who she was. I am never disappointed to see a woman who is dressed up! Beauty is uplifting and sloppiness is downer. Keep on dressing Lynette style! :)

Jennifer, I live on a ranch in Montana and so most of my clothing is casual -- jeans and a T-shirts that are presentable -- but I do sometimes wear my jersey dresses at home. When I watched this video this morning, I immediately changed out of my Levis and T and put on a jersey dress. It's finally going to be warm here today -- 70 degrees! So why not? My hubby came in to take me feeding cows with him (mostly riding around in a pick-up truck) and when he saw me he said, "You probably don't want to go with me," but I said, "Yes, I do!" I pulled on my cowgirl boots and went out the door with him! Thank you for further inspiring me and others to just go ahead and wear your clothes -- even the nice ones! We won't be enjoying them if they just hang there in the closet. Happy Resurrection Day, dear one!

Thanks for what you said in the beginning about jeans. I sometimes feel left out in these talks because I just don’t love dresses all the time. I’m physically not as comfortable-I think I just like my legs covered, lol. But even for a pants girl, I like to step it up - switch the T-shirt for a blouse; wear loafers, sandals or flats instead of flip flops, chinos or linen pants instead of jeans sometimes. When I moved back to that level of dressing, I started to feel more like myself again.

Deborah Hanna I can relate to what you are saying. Even though I do find dresses very pretty, I just feel more myself in trousers. I also believe there are many presentable trousers out there: chinos, smart pants, linen pants, cropped or cigarette pants, dark navy skim jeans (no rips, of course!), white pants/or jeans also look very chique, or even jodhpurs style. Paired with a belt, white shirt or blouse or a black roll-neck and a (navy) blazer, that is a very polished look. I find it also more practical for the day to day, especially in the colder weather I live in. Anyway, I would love if Jennifer could, perhaps, do a little look book for stylish pants outfits. Thank you 🌷

Excellent video and topic. I dress up after exercising and gardening each morning. I found out some years ago that when I went shopping and was dressed up the sales people respected me more and gave me the attention...food for thought. I prefer dresses or skirts in the hot and humid summer as they are actually cooler than slacks or jeans. Every woman needs a full length mirror at home she can use every day to see how she looks. I always dress "up" for shopping, church, visiting dining (no matter how casual) and even when I am at home. I feel better, look better and get more accomplished. And yes I use a full coverage apron I purchased on Etsey . I have received many compliments while I am out from total strangers....I know the men I see appreciate it. My husband loves that I respect myself and take care of myself. He likes it that I look good....he is proud of me. I always make sure I have bathed, makeup on and hair fixed before leaving home....and don't forget fragrance. Women in the US have become sloppy in their dress......time for a change. Thank you so much for your books. I enjoyed reading all of them. Enjoy your videos.

I am so grateful to know there are at least 182 of you ladies out there who dress smartly. The expression 'dressing up' seems strange, for an evening out perhaps but looking smart isnt dressing up. And looking smart and well presented shouldn't be reserved for every other part of your life outside of your home. I'm so appreciative you, Hennifer, are bringing this message to the masses. Perhaps a little example of Duchess Kate might be a good example. She wears appropriate clothing to suit her activity. One of the most observed women of our time.

I completely agree. After going through a harsh winter in Northwest MT, we are finally getting some warmer weather. Today I put on a long flowy skirt & blouse with a flowery pattern in shade of blue. I was just doing things at home and going grocery shopping, but it made me really happy. Since it's still not that warm, and it's always windy, I have a tank top under my blouse, a cardigan, and running tights under my skirt. I was really glad for those tights when my skirt blew up to my waist at one side while I was putting groceries in the car. ;)

I am a larger plus-sized lady and dresses and skirts just don't fit me well nor are they comfortable to wear ("chub rub" is serious). I am no longer working but I still have many of the nice pants and blouses I wore when I was working. Most days I'm in lounge clothes, and, yes I have been guilty of throwing on some leggings and a t-shirt to run to the grocery store. I am going to try to dress up more in my former work clothes. I have noticed that when I'm put together and presentable I stand straighter and have a more positive outlook on my day. Thanks for the video and encouragement.

I do try to look presentable always - or at least most of the time. 😉 As a stay-at-home mama of back-to-back babies, I’ve had plenty of pajama days. I actually just had a couple pajama days in a row as I recovered from a miscarriage. 😕 Though no one would expect anything from me today, I had the urge this afternoon to freshen up and surprise my husband upon his return home. I took a bath, did my hair and makeup, and put on a maxi dress (then rested, because that was exhausting!). My husband was delighted to see me looking refreshed, and we actually ended up going out on a spontaneous dinner date. It’s wonderful how taking care of our outward appearance can affect our spirits so positively. 😊

I agree with you completely. As someone who tries to dress appropriately at all times, I can attest that everything you say is true! A few comments about my experience: At home, I feel 100% more productive and happy, when dressed in either a dress, or a skirt, leggings, and nice top. I work out 5-6x per week, and there are strategies around that as well, so that I don't just keep my exercise clothes on. At work, I am daily told how nice I look, which actually can be somewhat embarrassing since I am one who doesn't like attention but I feel it is vitally important that I am a role model. Colleagues who were dressing down, now are dressing more appropriately. And finally, it's all about wearing an apron!! It is easy to think when coming home at the end of the day, that you don't want to get your clothes dirty when cooking dinner, so why not just put your pjs on? But I have looked nice all day for others, wouldn't I want to look nice for my family? I work now, but home schooled for 20 years and I have tried (with challenges!) to live this way over the years. Thank you for bringing this important message to everybody, especially younger viewers!! I have found it to be a key for my overall happiness.

I had a hard time switching over to dressing nicer after so many years schlepping around in sweatpants. As a homemaker with 3 little kids, its easy to fall into that mindset of feeling like your role doesn't warrant nice "work" attire. Oddly enough, now that I'm changing this, noone in my life has said anything negative at all. I'm also finding I'm treated with great respect and kindness by men when I wear dresses and skirts. I think they are assuming by my more feminine outfits that they won't get shut down if they offer to open a door for me. Love it!❤❤❤

Love this video, Jennifer! I tried your challenge last week (of dressing up for no reason) and it was so fun. I fully planned to stay home the entire day and had zero plans. But then I ended up going to the grocery store, the coffee shop, and I had two people drop in on me throughout the day! I felt fully prepared for anything that came my way, and was so thankful I looked nice when my plans changed that day. I also ended up cleaning the house quite a bit, and simply popped on a cute apron and it was fine. 😁 when I do dress nicer, even a cute jersey dress in the summer, I have people tell me I look so nice and ask me where I’m going. I tell them “nowhere” , and say that I wear the dress because it’s just as comfortable as pajamas, but I look nicer! ❤️

I home schooled my children and when we began I would either stay in my jammies or gym-type clothes. Then one day I looked in the mirror and thought, "This is what my children have to look at....how not motivating." So from that point on I started getting dressed, and putting more effort in my appearance first thing in the morning. My next comment is that we retired to a small, rural town where almost no one dresses up. Its been hard to not fall into that mode to run errands....post office, library, Tractor & Supply :) I not only still dress up, but will add that scarf or statement necklace. I stick out like a sore thumb, but I enjoy it, and who knows, maybe I'm influencing someone in some small way.

Absolutely, Shiryon. I also dress up to be inspiring for my son to value himself and teach him to always look presentable (he is 4). I have seen firsthand on my husband how his mother’s influence has made him a very stylish man who is properly dressed and takes care of himself always. I want my son to be like that too. Pair it with elegant and kind behaviour, of course. Currently, we are in lockdown because of the pandemic plus we live in the mountains in the middle of nowhere, I still do my make up and dress up because of my son and because of myself too. The only thing I won’t do is to ruin my expensive shoes during our walks outside in the dust and stony road. I still need to figure that one out. 😃🌷

What you say is true! I scaled back my wardrobe after I saw your Ted talk and read your books. I haven’t quite made it to 10 items but it is very small and manageable. When someone compliments my appearance, someone else usually cuts in saying, “Well, Wendy always dresses nice!” and I think it is so funny because I put very little effort into getting ready every day. I would say practically no effort!
Anytime someone compliments me and asks where I’m going so dressed up, I usually answer by thanking them and telling them that I just love wearing that dress or shirt or whatever it is I’m wearing because I’m being very truthful! Hi Jennifer! Thank you for this video. I can testify that once you start dressing up for no reason you do go through the phase of having the attention on you that you don't necessarily ask for, and then the people in your life come to expect it and appreciate that you are putting effort in. They dub you as the stylish friend even if you are just wearing a dress. Dresses are so simple, it's an outfit that practically puts itself together. I also love when someone says "but Sara, I don't like pants... yoga pants feel like I'm not wearing any pants, it's so comfortable"... You literally don't need to wear pants when you wear a dress and you still look presentable 😅 Thank you for your books and videos, especially about this topic. Over the years you have helped me figure out how to transition from a college student to a mature young woman simply by choosing to dress well and I'm so grateful! 💗

Thank you for your video, Jennifer! I love to dress up myself, but I realized that I started to do it less and less in the recent year and when I sat down and thought about it I've found out it has a lot to do with the changes in my life. A year ago I moved from Poland to the US, California and despite my late 20's went back to college. People here don't dress up as much, college students specifically, so my change is probably caused by the very humane urge to fit in and not stand out as much among those 18 year olds. But as you said, you don't feel good when wearing workout clothes all day long, I caught myself being less productive when I'm in my sweats. I'm willing to change that and start wearing my pretty blouses to classes. I miss them!

I so agree! I worked on my wardrobe to make sure I had things that fit correctly, worked with my body type and reflected my style. And then I made outfits whether it was a more athliesure look or going out look. I can’t tell you how many complements I get and how great I feel. There are so many dresses out there now days that it is easy to find a flattering one at a great price point. People are stunned when you have on a dress that fits well and you wear it with a smile. Thanks for your videos.

Yes! I feel so frumpy in the boxy t-shirt and jeans I see so many mothers wearing where I live. I reserve those clothes for heavy duty yard work or house painting. I take my job as a homeschooling mother seriously, so I dress appropriately for that job. As you said, it helps me get into the right mindset of doing my work for the day. I always insist that my children get dressed every day, too. No school work in pajamas!

My entire wardrobe is made up of exclusively dresses, hung in my choice of random order and worn from left to right as they hang! No more choices to make about what top goes with what bottom. I can always add a pair of yoga pants underneath if I am doing activities that call for some additional modesty under the dress. What FREEDOM!! Now, I am going to add an intention for the day as I am putting on my dress. Thanks to Vaneka for that idea!

Yay for dressing up!! One thing I’m kind of afraid of is to just blend in with everyone else around me. I LOVE to dress femininely and girly every day and not feel out of place or apologetically, instead of being in yoga pants. Being elegant and chic should ALWAYS be in style.

Since coming across your book “Lessons from Madame Chic” my attitude to wearing my clothes has changed. I, too, used to only wear my best clothes when out and wear my older clothes at home. Since discovering the 10 item wardrobe and your philosophy of always looking presentable I now can’t wait to get dressed in the morning and choose what to wear. When cleaning, I wear and apron over my clothes and, as I don’t use bleach, I never have any trouble of my clothes getting ruined. And if, after wearing them a lot, they do get ruined then I’ll buy some more. I have had to throw away jumpers that I had hardly worn because they’d been eaten by moths. I kept them for best and did not enjoy them. Now, I wear everything I have and enjoy them.

I love my stretchy knit dresses. I pair them with a cardi or jacket, or just wear alone. I also love jeans and a top. They make so many pretty tops these days that wear like a tee shirt, but have more interest and style to them like a blouse. There are also very comfortable and pretty shoes that are also practical-like Skechers or Clarks. You can find ballet flats or sandals that are comfortable like sneakers but have more style to them. These items make up the majority of my wardrobe!

I rarely dress up at any time, much less every day... After I discovered your channel a couple of years ago, I decided to wear a dress, a nice pair of shoes, fixed my hair in a nice updo, and wore makeup that took more than 5 minutes. As I was grocery shopping, I felt like men took more notice and greeted me. Then I had a woman actually look at me, make a face, and make a very audible "UGH!"... I don't know what that was about... I could have gotten offended but chose to flash her a friendly smile instead.

You are beautifying the world, several ladies at a time, Jennifer! I agree with you that one is much more productive when dressed nicely for the day. I have found it interesting that so many women go shopping for clothes, but while they are shopping they often are not dressed so nicely. I like some of the replies your listeners have ready for those who ask why they are dressed up. We are an older couple and we are very frequently, especially my husband who wears a suit and tie to weddings and funerals, complimented on how "regal" we look. Our granddaughter told us recently that her friends comment on how striking and "presidential' we look. We do not dress much differently from what we did over 50 years ago when we were single! I recall when folks dressed up to fly. It is so energizing to see a woman or man who is dressed well. While I was on jury duty a while back, after the first day, I decided to dress up more. We had to walk in front of observers in the court and we were in a position of judging someone, so I felt we needed to respect our "job." It was so fun to notice that others, men and women, began to dress up more for the remainder of the trial. Keep on raising the bar, dear Jennifer.

    Jennifer,
I was that woman! Then I read all your Madame Chic books and they helped me change how I viewed my wardrobe. They did exactly what you said, helped me be feminine and chic but in a way perfectly suited to me. All in ten items! ❤️
I do get comments often about where I’m going dressed up - but I’m getting used to them. It is an awkward phase!
And I also have found it’s make me more productive overall - it’s amazing how what you wear speaks in such a powerful way to the rest of your life. Not even just to others but to yourself! So glad you shared your lessons from Madame chic!

Jennifer, I have been a fan for a couple of years now, starting with your books and then your channel. I watched this video this morning, as I needed some inspiration to feel my best. I took your advice and wore a simple dress, cardigan and cute white sneakers to grocery shop. I received a few compliments from fellow shoppers, which was nice. What I loved most about trying this is that it cost me nothing! It did not come in a bottle or I did not have to run out to grab the latest thing. I stayed in this outfit all day while I did my chores and cooked, and I felt so elegant, yet very comfortable. I also listened to a Hauser cello concert while I cooked. Thank you for being such a breath of fresh air and reminding us to put a little “lovely” back in our day. Merci!

I absolutely love this topic and your message. I agree completely. I was never one to wear sweatpants or jeans every day but after reading your books I did begin to dress more consciously and it does make a difference! I’ve had friends and family come over to my house and ask me where I was going that day because I look so nice and I just smile and say “I’m just dressed for life!” Now they all associate me with dressing nicely for life and for whatever comes my way. I feel better and I do accomplish more and look presentable in all situations. It’s a great way to be.

Thank you for this video, Jennifer. I do struggle with this and I already commented on your chic assignment video that I do all the other things, like reading, listening to classical music, seeking out the arts, painting, learning new things all the time, taking care of the house, cooking home made meals. It all comes naturally to me and I love it but dressing up for no occasion is a struggle. I work from home and I spend my days in exercise clothes. I wouldn’t wear them outside of the house but I do wear them at home most of the time. I’m trying to break this habit but I find it really challenging especially since I moved to England to a house with poor heating and no insulation. I just put layers and layers of clothes, sometimes even a house robe on top of it all because I am always so cold. I had situations when the neighbours knocked on my door and I was too ashamed to open the doors. It does not feel good. I really must do something about it and the first step is to stop buying clothes that are pretty but do not keep me warm because I will never wear them anyway.

Hi Jennifer, I love your channel! I have a funny story about dressing up. My stepfather joined a country club quite a few years ago. He joined not long before my birthday and we all thought it would be fun to have dinner there on my birthday. So, my parents, a friend, and I all went straight from our office jobs wearing what we thought was proper attire. As we were walking to the door of the club I heard a lady call us snobs. The hostess gave us a funny look. When we got to the dining room we understood. Everyone was surprisingly casual. Teens looked like they had just come from gym class and adults looked like they had been doing yard work. We had never been in a country club before, so all we knew was what we'd seen on TV. I never expected to be labeled a snob by a country club member. I learned to always call and check the dress code. 😂😂😂

Several years ago, I decided that the current trends were made to show off a teenage body, and were not created for my forty-something body, (besides the fact that I prefer modesty.) I started wearing colorful wraparound skirts from India with a solid colored, well-made shirt and comfy leggings beneath my skirts. (Yes, I'm a Madame Bohemienne!) :) The funny part was how many people have since complimented me on my "look." My "LOOK"...??? This is just me being me, regardless of what everyone else is doing! I spend less on my skirts than most people seem to spend on their jeans, and my outfits are every bit as comfortable as walking around in leggings, without the embarrassment of feeling like I am always one wrong move away from a "wardrobe malfunction."

I was a tom boy growing up. Femininity wasn’t cultivated in me until I got married and my husband shopped with me and encouraged me to expand my wardrobe. Even then I had limits. I couldn’t stand to put on anything with flowers or lace etc. Now, 12 years later, you were the one to help finish the job of finding, embracing and loving my femininity. I’d see you in your lovely clothes and find myself craving to try out a floral top! My wardrobe is so different now and I love it! I feel glowy and beautiful. I’ve worked hard to keep at my 5 minute make up routine and I’m such a better parent for it. When you dress chic you want to talk chic and keep your dignity.
Right now my biggest struggle is the weather. I’m an expat in an extremely hot and humid climate but also one with extremely modest expectations. When I go out, I make sure I’m dressed well and appropriately and just suck up how much I’m sweating. However, at home I want to be comfortable. If I’m too hot I get crabby. I wear skinny jeans and a nursing tank all the time because of that. But I long to set the presentable example for my kids all the time and bc I just feel lovelier with my dress over my jeans. At least if someone comes to my door all I have to do is throw on my nice too or dress I leave hanging by the door to cover up.

I've been wearing nursing tank tops or t-shirts with bulky cardigans and leggings because it's been cold and gray and we haven't been going anywhere so I just feel frumpy. I was very self conscious to begin with! I’d do the school run and think everyone was watching me! Well, I kept going and now it is the norm to see me in dresses styled from the forties, fifties, sixties or seventies... I love them all and don’t care what people think any more! Another thought that I had is that often people don't want to wear their nicer clothes, because they aren't comfortable. Having things that feel good on you and you feel good about wearing makes you want to wear the nicer things.
