I recently had to drop my parents off at the airport an hour away first thing in the morning. Convinced I wouldn’t have to get out of the car and interact with anyone, I donned a comfy dress, slipped on some easy shoes, and grabbed my handbag. Besides putting my hair in a neat ponytail, it was almost no effort. Honestly, I felt a bit like I had just rolled out of bed. While in the city, I couldn’t resist getting coffee and visiting a favorite store in a somewhat high-end neighborhood. I was DELIGHTED to realize that even with my minimal effort, I looked presentable enough to stroll around the store AND get a couple compliments on my dress! Thank you for being the kind of influence on my life that you are, Jennifer! 🤍

Yesterday my husband and I went to a Mother's day brunch/buffet at a country club/golf course. First time to do so after the pandemic. So, we were really looking forward to enjoying something we had missed doing over the last several years. We had reservations. We dressed in a 'casual-dressy' mode. When we arrived we were greeted by a hostess/seater that wore thin , loudly printed leggings/tights that showed everything on her body. Her top was a backyard tank top with a message printed on it. Hair unwashed and uncombed. Slippers on her feet. I looked around the room at the clientele. Eighty percent (80%) of attendees were wearing pajamas, shorts, pool thongs on their feet, backyard tank tops which displayed incredible amounts of flesh, ripped and torn jeans. Manners matched the clothing, too. The price tag to eat there was NOT cheap. Everyone, tho', looked like something the cat dragged in. Why? What has happened? It used to be that those who came to a function ill-dressed felt out of place. Yesterday, in this venue, we felt out of place only because we came dressed as we should have. The times are turned upside down.

I’ve been working toward the 10 item basics wardrobe for my second season. As a retiree I do find it a bit challenging for the more active months when we do so many different activities. I’m finding I need one for each lifestyle as only a few pieces care over from one to another! Fall and winter weren’t a challenge at all and I really do like the idea of a much pared down wardrobe. It makes things so much more simple! I had my colors done late last year and that helped with decision making immensely. As I sew about 50% of my wardrobe I have a much larger selection of colors and fabrics to select from and can customize styles and fit.

I woke up yesterday feeling awful. Anxious and a bit depressed and totally unmotivated. I forced myself to get properly dressed, do my hair, a very quick makeup and some basic jewellery. It changed the trajectory of my day. It really is important to dress properly, even if it seems frivolous or a waste of time. It's not.

I don't stick to a specific number of items for my wardrobe, but I do keep it relatively minimal. It doesn't have to be 10 for me, the number can be different for everyone, but the whole point of rotating and knowing each item really well and knowing how to pair it I really love. And I love being presentable for sure.

I have a number of beautiful dresses I never wear. I was inspired by your idea of just wearing what you love, even if it's "nice." Why have a closest full of things too nice to wear? I have also been inspired by Freida Cahlo who treated her hair, makeup, and clothing as components of her art--she was her own canvas. Her amazing personal collection of clothes has been released to the public for viewing in her house, Casa Azule, in Mexico City and I was fascinated by how she put pieces together into portable, wearable art. The art of dressing well.

This makes so much sense Jennifer. I am a numbers person. Thank you for explaining the reason behind it. It takes me a moment to grasp things fully. Change is never easy for me. But know it is necessary for growth. I want to get rid of the excess and leave room for things that mean more to me. There is a saying that hit me hard when I first heard it "Use things and love people, not use people and love things". This is the relationship I want with clothing. I want to take pride in what I put on my body, but don't think having too many options and taking so long to make a decision on what to wear because of having too much is living my best life. 🌺

Even better is that I’m leaving for a 65 day trip to Europe (all cruises, land tours/hotels) and instead of packing “favorite outfits” as I used to do, I’ve got my capsule wardrobe with pieces that mix and match so I’m not overpacking or taking too much. From pool, to tour and formal dinners…it’s all there! 💕Thank you for making packing super easy.

Thank you Jennifer for this! Really it’s changed my life. I am not all the way in cleaning my main closet but I pick out ten items and hang them outside my closet on a hook. When I look at the items I’ve picked for that season I feel empowered to donate my clothes that no longer work for me. Gradually I’ve said bye to a crammed closet. I can see wearing my spring and summer dresses and not just black seven days a week. My hall closet is close to being my organized bathroom essentials now and my crafting room where my mom used to live has transformed into my own little heaven! Next I’ll tackle the toys but that’s ok! Rome wasn’t built in a day. Au Revoir!

I have really enjoyed learning the 10 item wardrobe because I find it very liberating to have a boundary, but also giving myself permission to get what I need. Before I was indulgent in irresponsible ways with impulse buying but then would deny myself in other ways like never buying myself underwear to make up for it. Now that I have a plan I have so much less stress. I feel responsible and in control--like I know what I need, I know what I want. I have noticed I get more complements on my wardrobe. People tell me I always look right for the occasion etc. Before I felt like such a hodgepodge and felt childish. Now I feel more grown up (i'm almost 40!). My husband is a fan too (he listens to you at work)! I bought him silk pjs for xmas and he loves feeling pulled together at home now! You have helped our whole family with this concept! Thank you!

Strong ethic for me growing up as instilled by my mom was to come home from school and change out of my school clothes into play clothes. Play clothes were more expendable and less expensive. I still follow this principle, dressing appropriately for my day. I’m also 6’1” and so well-fitting clothes are expensive and very hard to find. There’s no way I could wear that dress for a day at home, as beautiful as it is. This might work for you, but if I ruined that dress it’s really hard for me to find another one! Jennifer's chicken, pesto and mozzarella recipe she posted recently, is really easy for kids or husbands.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video Jennifer ❤….. I have my core items, I have to work on not buying too many extras 😂, but I do try to purge extras that have not “worked” or I’ve impulsively bought before switching seasons . I live in Alberta, Canada so I have more sweaters etc. I’m recently retired from a corporate office and I miss dressing for work. Even though I’m mostly at home I still do and enjoy dressing appropriately every day. My mother was the same … it was the way I was raised…. I was born in England and my family immigrated to Canada in the 70’s …. Have a wonderful day 💐

I have been following you Jennifer since your very early days and adopted the 10 item wardrobe several years ago and yes have saved a fortune. I live in the UK where I need to layer, so have tweaked it a bit to 7 outfits with a matching cardi - one for each day of the week. My two basic formulas are jeans or navy trousers and a pretty top plus the co-ordinating cardi, or a dress and cardi. I still struggle with shoes though as I find I need about 4 different styles. Hmm, maybe I need to make smart shoes my core shoe wardrobe and the casual shoes are my extras. I like dressing up and feel really slobby in casual shoes - would never in a million years wear trainers/sneakers. Thanks for all your inspiration, particularly your recipes - I have made the chicken pesto mozzarella recipe several times and guests have enjoyed it too.

Thank so very much for going more into depth about what counts as extra. The 10 item wardrobe intrigues me, yet completely confuses me. I tried it for a month. I was giving it a month because I live in a climate that spring and fall temps can drastically change from one day to the next. To combat that I have to have a LOT of layering pieces and various items. I actually don’t have a huge wardrobe anyway, but even doing it for the one month did help me narrow down my style more so I don’t over shop.

    • @melligolightly
      @melligolightly Рік тому

I combat this by having 10 item wardrobes for each season, which are accessible at all times. Since it is not too much overall, everything fits in my standard sized closet. When it is spring, but it is a cold day, I just take something from my fall wardrobe, for example. Or I slide single pieces in these transitional seasons, e. g. wear a "spring" trouser but with a "fall" longsleeve top.

Minimal mom talks about this, she basically says you deserve to have some nice clothes that you like and feel good in no matter what size you are right now. I would just buy a few put together outfits for now, maybe not the most expensive if you don’t think you’ll end up wearing them long.

Jennifer from The Everyday Style School podcast says 2 things that I think can help reframe these thoughts. (I might be paraphrasing, it’s how I remember it.) 1. If you want to change how you feel, you have to change what you see. If you start dressing better, you will feel better, you will show up for life differently, you will take better care of yourself…and that will help you reach your goals. 2. Nobody ever felt better by dressing frumpy. I encourage you to buy at least a few pieces that you like and enjoy wearing at the size you are today. And wear them! Don’t leave the beautiful clothes hanging (to save them for special occasions)…every day is a special occasion. Also, nobody but you knows what the size tag says. Buy the pieces that fit…ignore the tag. Good luck! 😊

I really love the 10 item concept but it didn’t work for me over time. These days I do a seasonal switch over when I take out everything from my wardrobe and my big storage suitcase. I write down specific outfits for the coming season. 5 work from home, 5 work from the office, 5 for church, 3 work work out etc etc. Then I pull out the necessary pieces and all the rest goes back in the big suitcase. A wardrobe with fully interchangeable pieces doesn’t work for me because I enjoy a few different styles depending on my mood so I think in complete outfits instead. It’s such an enjoyable process! Thanks Jennifer, I really enjoyed the video ❤

This is such a great idea! I wear many hats and so I need different degrees of casual/dressy outfits and your system sounds like a great way to plan that out. Also, we have 4 distinct seasons where I live and so I feel that sort of necessitates more clothes.

I agree with you and have also evolved the 10 item wardrobe idea to what works for me and now each season create "7 Everyday Outfits" based on my typical week, including shoes and cardigans for layering". If an outfit wears out, which takes ages, I replace it.
It means when I open my wardrobe in the morning, I just have my 7 Everyday Outfits to chose from.
I am forever grateful to Jennifer's 10 item idea as it has saved me a lot of money, but I found the mixing and matching idea too complicated and when shopping if I found an item, I had to think, does it go with everything else. Do I have the right shoes - argh!
In reality, I still only have about 10-12 items per season, I just see them differently, not mix and match, but as 7 complete outfits. Sometimes they can mix and match, but that is not the main aim for me.
      Life is so much simpler.
I also have separate "wardrobes" for activewear (gardening, camping, hiking) , eveningwear and holidaywear, also sadly funeralwear, which I keep elsewhere in a chest of drawers or a suitcase. I also store my out of season 7 Outfit wardrobe away from the current one.

    Hi Jennifer,
I'm very grateful for you and your videos. I've enrolled in your master class and bought your Madame Chic book as well as Connoisseur Kids. These are the areas I homeschool my children in while my husband focuses on academia. I'm finding your material to be so helpful. For my kids and I.
Recently I purchased a denim Tomi dress that made me feel great! My husband was with me and we both knew it was my true style. :D It has been my goal to wear more dresses but found it challenging to find one casual enough to feel comfortable in. I bought it thoughtfully. I was so pleased how versatile it was. It had a zipper to wear more formally zipped or down casually. It had long sleeves that could button at full length or be folded up for warner weather. It had a belt that could be worn casually loose or cinched and more form fitting. It had pockets. :) I realized I could wear this to clean, to church, to work, out with the ladies. That was one of my first big wins learnt from Connoisseur School!
My husband has also paid me compliments for implementing etiquette with our children. We had a family gathering and he was so pleased that they were shaking hands with eye contact and ordering confidently off the menu.
Thank you for being my etiquette coach and for encouraging me to be my true self. I'm getting closer and I like me.

I love this concept and how it plays out. Over the years, I have honed my style more and more. The most challenging area for me was learning how to combine comfort+practicality+beauty for my days at home. In the past couple years I’ve found some very cute dresses in cool, breezy rayon for working around the house in the hot summertime, but they are also great for running errands, easily layered with a denim jacket or sweater. I also like my knee-length denim and linen skirts, great with my Breton tops, also good for work and casual outings. They pair well with pretty blouses and cute shoes, too, for a dressy-casual look. It’s so true, getting dressed is so much easier when you have classic pieces that mix and match well and can be seasonally and occasionally dressed up and down. I think it is important to convey to ourselves, to our families and those around us that we value the dignity and beauty of our job as wives, mothers and homemakers. We often say with our words that it is important, but shlumping around in ugly clothes tells on us that our attitudes are not in line with our words.

I live in the UK and in the 1920's most men wore a suit and cap - I know both my Grandads did. The women in the 1940's walking down the street often looked like movie stars compared to how many women look today. When did it all go so horribly wrong? There is a time and a place for jeans and jogging bottoms, but not all the time. In my last job, I worked with some women 10 years older than me who recall being made by their mothers to wear dresses and matching gloves. I guess they were children in the 1950's.

      My suggestion:
Start by removing from your wardrobe clothes that are not your "Everyday Clothes" these are worn less frequently.
Put them into three separate piles:
      1. "Activewear/Hobbies" - clothes and shoes you wear only for activities such as gardening, decorating, camping, hiking, sports and exercise?
      2. "Formal / Social Wear" - clothes and shoes you would wear to a wedding, party, christmas, nightclub, theatre, etc
      3. "Holiday Clothes" - clothes and shoes that you only wear on holiday, eg ski wear or trekking boots. I have a few of these.
Pull these out and put to one side.
I started off with Jennifer's 10 item wardrobe, but due to working 3 days a week, which required a work uniform of sorts and spending 4 days at home, I decided to create 7 outfits for the week- 3 for work and 4 for home.
Now, what you should hopefully have left hanging in your wardrobe are your "Everyday clothes", which may include work clothes if you are working.
Anything that isn't "Everyday" remove and put it on one of the 3 piles if related or start a 4th pile.
Now sort your "Everyday" clothes into seasons, if you have seasons where you live - Cold Weather clothes & Warm Weather Clothes.
For each season, try to create 7 "Everyday" outfits that you would wear, based on your typical week. Include shoes.
Any clothes left over are surplus! :) You don't need them.
Did you find it difficult to create 7 outfits? Maybe there was a missing piece, that prevented you from creating an outfit, such as a pair of shoes or a top to go under a work jacket? If so, put it on a shopping list.
Maybe you didn't like the styles as your style has changed? Again put what you would like to buy on a list.
I find 7 outfits idea works better for me. My formula is jeans or navy trousers and a pretty top and a cardi, or a dress and cardi. If one outfit wears out, I go and buy another complete outfit, plus shoes if needed. Unlike the 10 item wardrobe, I don't have to worry if the new items match the other 9 items.
      Hope you find this useful.

Loved the video. This is an area I definitely need to work on. I tend to dress too comfortable and casual. BTW I LOVE your wardrobe and I LOVE your wallpaper. Love from Florida.

I love this idea. I'm 64 and working on "upping my game" from the old jeans (now leggings) and t shirts. I have always worn dresses in the summer though. They are so much more comfortable and cool. One question: I rarely feel comfortable in most shoes. I've had arthritis in my feet for decades (and yet I run marathons and hike but that's another story). I like sketchers and birkenstocks for comfort. What can I do? I have one pair of navy flats that are good for a couple of hours. Any heal and I'm writhing in pain.

Comfortable and stylish shoes are the holy grail. Whoever cracks that will be rich indeed :)
Like you, my feet are "an issue", albeit a different one from yours. I live in the UK and am size 5.5 wide, which only a few shops stock, annoyingly the more expensive ones.
So I dedicate time to go on a focused shoe shopping trip. Half to a full day twice a year.
It is a pain, but is what I need to do. I spend a lot of time thinking about what I need, to pick the most flexible styles, I test drive them at home on carpet to see if they are comfortable, if not take them back.
I think your comfortable casual shoes would fit into Jennifers "Extras" category, which you seemingly find easy - me too. You seem to be having problems with smart shoes that go with a smarter 10 item core wardrobe? I do to. You may find my strategy helpful. To make my life easier, for my core 10 item wardrobe, I have gone with all navy coloured bottoms and dresses (you could pick another neutral eg black?) and stick to neutral coloured shoes/boots -navy, black or brown. (Metalic leather is good in the summer). I don't buy colourful shoes eg red- not that there are many in my size anyway, as I wouldn't get the wear out of them. I find shopping for shoes frustrating, due to lack of choice in my size, so have made it simple. If I find a shoe or ankle boot that works I will buy it again the next season. I am currently on my 3rd repeat purchase on one item - a silver metalic walking sandal as it is great for holidays - walking long distances, but due to being metallic can be worn in the evening to a restaurant.
However, I still have fun with my outfits, by having colour and/or texture on my top half and in accessories such as scarves. Hope this helps.
