Sonic Adventure 3 on the other hand, I don’t think we’re getting that either. As much I would love a Sonic Adventure 3, I don’t think we’ll get it. Despite what Iizuka said, he could just be hinting at a future game that has the adventure gameplay. As a fan of Sonic Adventure 1-2, I would want to see how Sonic Frontiers does first then have them remake both adventure games to see if they can successfully remaster some of the best games in the franchise. After that, make a Frontiers 2 with added momentum to see if it fits with the open-world format. Assuming they let Ian Flynn stay as a main writer with complete control over the story, then create Sonic Adventure 3.
I honestly love these kinds of discussion videos with really "out there" topics, it's a lot more interesting than just another Frontiers discussion. Awesome job Matt!
The issue with waiting for Sonic to be at his lowest point as a gaming franchise in order to make and sell a hypothetical SA3 is that that's exactly when nobody should be trusting Sega or Sonic Team to make a quality game nor should they be buying the games anymore. If they already are at the point of being so mismanaged beyond repair and reduced budget, all they'll pump out with this SA3 is a mess of a game that nobody actually wanted. It would be another slap in the face to previous fans of the series. It should really only be made when Sega and their team have shown they know what they're doing or hired people who know how to make a sequel faithful to the two Adventure games.

The series has already hit several hard times in it's history, how much worse than those does it have to be to go into 'Break-Glass In Case of Emergency' for a SA3? The movies, comics and merch do great, but that success and quality hasn't exactly been reflected in the games in recent years. I think they should do a frontiers 2. On one hand, SEGA/Sonic Team doesn't seem ready for a third Sonic Adventure. But on the other, Sonic Adventure 3 could be THE Sonic Frontiers sequel that continues the "open world" formula.
Seeing Iizuka's comments, what I imagine would be their vision for SA3 would be more in tune with Frontiers gameplay only with a more Adventure setting. Large expansive "open-zone" cities and areas with collectables, NPCS, objectives, and enemies around them that are more designed for movement than the Adventure, 06, or Unleashed hub areas were (like powerlines around to rail grind, sloped buildings to run up, etc...). It'll carry Frontiers more serious tone of writing. They might even bring back chao gardens. But the levels themselves will be a similar approach as Frontiers (which appears to be very linear) with original level themes instead of using older ones. And they'll have the same (perhaps more expanded) skill tree system they're using for Frontiers. I doubt they would bring back the multiple character stories, using the excuse that the multiple stories were only meant to pad out time back in that era, but with the larger scope they're able to accomplish now, there is no need for the padding (basically the same thing they said about Frontiers difficulty). While personally I would actually really enjoy this, I could see Adventure fans being really upset.
I would say Sonic Adventure 3 because Sonic Frontiers 1 hasn’t even been released yet, and we don’t have enough information about it for a final opinion.
SA3 would be my preference because I don't think open world was ever a great idea for Sonic. But then again, I also have 0 faith that SA3 would even be good so it doesn't really matter.
imo the "Adventure 3" boat sailed long, long ago. I would love to see something that is Adventure 3 in all but name, but show a trailer of A3 and it doesn't matter what they actually show, they will piss many people off on a scale that will make the initial reception to Frontiers look mild. Because there are so many expectations for A3 going in all sorts of different directions that it will be impossible to please most people waiting for it.

And why would we have frontiers 2? We don't have unleashed 2, or colours 2, or generations 2 and the only title that had a sequel was sa. (And even then that's kinda questionable considering the fact that neither of its stories are connected.) I personally never want adventure 3 to release nor do I think it’ll ever. 1. Because this game has been requested for over 2 decades by adventure fans and it’s extremely unlikely that even if it were the best sonic heck the best game ever it’ll live it up to the hype and expectations. 2. There’s no point to releasing it, if it wasn’t planned back when SA2 was released it’ll probably never happen.
Sonic Frontiers 2 is a safer bet and we haven't played Frontiers yet. At the moment wanting Sonic Adventure 3 is like people wanting Half-life 3 and we have seen where that went. The expectations on a Sonic Adventure 3 are mountain high, the game can almost never live up to the hype. Though if we were to think of a scenario where it COULD be made the equal of SA1 and 2 or even the SUM of its parts then I feel they should first have the developers dip their toes into remastering/ remaking SA1 (currently 24 years old) and SA2 (currently 21 years old) as an HD rerelease package, or maybe go about it as they did with Resident Evil 2 (giant success for Capcom). This gives the devs time to get back in the groove so they get a feel for what the adventure-type games FELT like and not just nostalgia goggle it after 'boosting-gameplay' the past decade or so. Mayhaps we could get something that would actually be equal to SA1 and SA2 that way, because honestly if they can pull off a SA3 that's on equal ground as SA1 and 2, I'd be ecstatic! I dread the day though when they have to pull out SA3 to save Sonic's image as a gaming brand. That is admitting defeat for all the reasons you said, Matt. It WILL sell, because of the name alone. To sully the Sonic Adventure legacy with a subpar adaptation as a last-ditch effort is a straight offense to the fans, the adventure series as a well-liked arc, and Sonic as a brand. It just can't live up to the hype just yet.
I agree. Honestly the Adventure trilogy should just be replay able 3D classic's that defined generations. As in focus on making brand new experiences with there current formula instead of trying to make the next Sonic Adventure game.
While Sonic Frontiers isn't out yet so it wouldn't really be fair to jump to conclusions on what comes next... I still feel SA3 should be the next step. I know that sounds biased, but that formula hasn't been revisited since '06. But at the same time... with SEGA and Sonic Team being the inept nimrods they are, it'll be no surprise to obnoxious pessimists like me that they'll highly likely screw it up and/or rush it out the door like they've been doing for most of their recent titles. I really don't trust them with this franchise... fans know what to do. Mania, a game made by some longtime fans of the series, is proof of that.
I have a hot take i dont think sonic adventure 1 and 2 had that much momentum like it had momentum yeah but I personally dont remember any section in both adventure games that REALLY used momentum If there was momentum then it at least for me wasnt really noticeable or memorable
If sonic ran in a straight line for a while he’ll speed up getting pretty fast there were also plenty of springs, loops, and ledges that looks would help increase his speed if he were to do a spin dash on/off of them

Was there a section where you run in a strait line if so then Players (or atleast me) just do a Spin Dash XD 2.I feel like most loops were automated (I mean The speed with Dash Panels not in you cant move) 3. I asume with ledges you mean for example the building in the beginning of speed highway with the extra life. I feel like those were more like an SA1 thing rather than SA2. But its not really what I think of if I think Sonic Adventures Gameplay. that and its more like a secret that actual Level design. Okay so to clear it up I dont think SA1 and SA2 dont have Momentum I just feel like people are over exaggerating like The whole Gameplay was about using Momentum.
Frontiers 2 would be better right now since they know the forum for its gameplay better (seeing as classic sonic doesn’t have good physics in forces and adventure is 3D classic sonic) so they can get the gameplay right in a second frontiers game.
Sonic frontiers doesn't look like it's missing momentum, it's just more controlled. Notice, for example, how the rail grinding speed is different between when Sonic lands on it, vs when he dashes only it. Momentum is there, it's just being faked, which I would argue is a good thing. If it's too real, it becomes very unresponsive, and interpreting everything separate from the game's physics allows for more control over the character.
I prefer a Sonic Frontiers 2. They made a formula, and if it's praised, they'll roll with it and more Sonic games would most likely come out quicker thanks to that formula. Sonic Team isn't ready for Sonic Adventure 3 yet, they haven't even dipped their toes into the adventure formula let alone made a remake of the Adventure games to start from there. Sonic Frontiers 2 would not be quicker, but also better if they made it this time period. Maybe, they can slowly add some elements from the adventure games (not anything huge like rail momentum, bounce, spindash and those things), then they can make an adventure framework from there. But a Sonic Frontiers 2 is less cost effective, way quicker and would be better if they did an Adventure 3 now. The only thing that might be a hassle is the story so they need to think outside the box and make a new open world story or if the Frontiers story needs a continuation, they can start from there.

The title of the game does not matter as much as the actual content and QUALITY of the game. Surely many people want to see the "SA3" title on the packaging, but it won't mean shit if the game does not live by it's name.
I think sonic adventure three would bring the series back, but they are going to use it in one of two ways. Either they will use it when the franchise is on is the lowest of lows, almost dead, so Adventure three will be their Hail Mary. Or, and this is the one that I think will happen, if frontiers succeeds, and the franchise slowly gets back its respect, SA3 will pour gallons of gasoline on that, and the franchise will get its respect back faster. Sonic adventure three is a VERY powerful name, and they have to use it as wisely as they can.
I feel like when we get SA3 it’ll be seen as a disappointment due to expectations from years of waiting although frontiers 2 has more of chance to get good reviews not saying that’s definitely what would happen it’s just what I think would
Sonic adventure 1 and 2 arent even that good as people make them out to be and are actually pretty bad with janky animations and all the problems people complain about frontiers (like the stages being too linear) plus more. Like sonic constantly about to clip through the ground and when jumping on a loop when trying to go backwards can glitch out the game to hell and back, and much more like spin dash that can literally make sonic clip through any wall. Also, the pacing is terrible, the casino pinball level is a waste of time and a shoehorned in unrelated gameplay style I dont like in sonic (a poor floaty version of pinball that wastes time with extra padding) and the other characters seem so unnecessary and are only their to progress the story and not enhance the gameplay experience
Compared to mario 64 which, the only thing that aged poorly was the graphics and the star catching mechanic that sends you back to the hub. Also, I'm not defending sonic frontiers, I agree that the game looks shallow and dull with bad gameplay, but I think it looks just as dull as sonic adventure was and still is.
Well sonic frontier 2's existence is confirmed! So that out of the way.. Sonic adventure 3 well in my opinion they should remake the 2 games first...then sonic adventure 3 they have some new developers in sonic team remake the first ones would make them get the hang of making an adventure game and then they are ready...for SONIC ADVENTURE 3!

I think They should make a sequel to Sonic Frontiers than Sonic Adventure 3, first They need to make the DLC for Sonic Frontiers then make a Sonic Frontiers 2 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 6 and new Xbox console. Sonic Adventure 3 IMO should never happen BC of how the game will get over hyped and if it ends up getting a 4.5/10 or worse a 1.5/10 then the gaming side of Sonic is doomed, especially if that Sonic Adventure 3 turns out to be worse than Sonic 06, the Movie side of Sonic and Sonic Prime are going to carry the IP even more (I would say the IDW comics aswell but the Comic book industry is dying and I love the IDW comics more so than the Archie comics)

Sonic frontiers weall I really can’t determine anything right now. Because so far from what we see the trailers the eight had a rough start due to the marketing and due to the flaws people pointed out during the gameplay. The gameplay has show pop and the animation need to be fixed all of that but Sonic frontiers have a good story fix animation. The lowest point was Sonic Boom which forced Sega to restructure. Then we've got Forces, not SA3.

I would say Sonic Adventure 3 because Sonic Frontiers 1 hasn’t even been released yet, and we don’t have enough information about it for a final opinion.
SA3 would be my preference because I don't think open world was ever a great idea for Sonic. But then again, I also have 0 faith that SA3 would even be good so it doesn't really matter.
imo the "Adventure 3" boat sailed long, long ago. I would love to see something that is Adventure 3 in all but name, but show a trailer of A3 and it doesn't matter what they actually show, they will piss many people off on a scale that will make the initial reception to Frontiers look mild. Because there are so many expectations for A3 going in all sorts of different directions that it will be impossible to please most people waiting for it.
Frontiers 2, Adventure 3 needs a big team and a capable one, work on Frontiers 2 then jump on that Adventure 3

We don't have unleashed 2, or colours 2, or generations 2 and the only title that had a sequel was sa. (And even then that's kinda questionable considering the fact that neither of its stories are connected.) And I highly doubt that we're gonna get a sequel for frontiers, it just seems like a one and done story.

I personally never want adventure 3 to release nor do I think it’ll ever.
1. Because this game has been requested for over 2 decades by adventure fans and it’s extremely unlikely that even if it were the best sonic heck the best game ever it’ll live it up to the hype and expectations.
2. There’s no point to releasing it, if it wasn’t planned back when SA2 was released it’ll probably never happen.

Sonic Frontiers 2 is a safer bet and we haven't played Frontiers yet.
At the moment wanting Sonic Adventure 3 is like people wanting Half-life 3 and we have seen where that went. The expectations on a Sonic Adventure 3 are mountain high, the game can almost never live up to the hype. Though if we were to think of a scenario where it COULD be made the equal of SA1 and 2 or even the SUM of its parts then I feel they should first have the developers dip their toes into remastering/ remaking SA1 (currently 24 years old) and SA2 (currently 21 years old) as an HD rerelease package, or maybe go about it as they did with Resident Evil 2 (giant success for Capcom).
This gives the devs time to get back in the groove so they get a feel for what the adventure-type games FELT like and not just nostalgia goggle it after 'boosting-gameplay' the past decade or so. Mayhaps we could get something that would actually be equal to SA1 and SA2 that way, because honestly if they can pull off a SA3 that's on equal ground as SA1 and 2, I'd be ecstatic!
I dread the day though when they have to pull out SA3 to save Sonic's image as a gaming brand. That is admitting defeat for all the reasons you said, Matt. It WILL sell, because of the name alone. To sully the Sonic Adventure legacy with a subpar adaptation as a last-ditch effort is a straight offense to the fans, the adventure series as a well-liked arc, and Sonic as a brand. It just can't live up to the hype just yet.
I agree. Honestly the Adventure trilogy should just be replay able 3D classic's that defined generations. As in focus on making brand new experiences with there current formula instead of trying to make the next Sonic Adventure game.

While Sonic Frontiers isn't out yet so it wouldn't really be fair to jump to conclusions on what comes next... I still feel SA3 should be the next step. I know that sounds biased, but that formula hasn't been revisited since '06.
But at the same time... with SEGA and Sonic Team being the inept nimrods they are, it'll be no surprise to obnoxious pessimists like me that they'll highly likely screw it up and/or rush it out the door like they've been doing for most of their recent titles. I really don't trust them with this franchise... fans know what to do. Mania, a game made by some longtime fans of the series, is proof of that.

If sonic ran in a straight line for a while he’ll speed up getting pretty fast there were also plenty of springs, loops, and ledges that looks would help increase his speed if he were to do a spin dash on/off of them

I feel like those were more like an SA1 thing rather than SA2. But its not really what I think of if I think Sonic Adventures Gameplay. that and its more like a secret that actual Level design.
Okay so to clear it up I dont think SA1 and SA2 dont have Momentum I just feel like people are over exaggerating like The whole Gameplay was about using Momentum.

Frontiers 2 would be better right now since they know the forum for its gameplay better (seeing as classic sonic doesn’t have good physics in forces and adventure is 3D classic sonic) so they can get the gameplay right in a second frontiers game.
Sonic frontiers doesn't look like it's missing momentum, it's just more controlled. Notice, for example, how the rail grinding speed is different between when Sonic lands on it, vs when he dashes only it. Momentum is there, it's just being faked, which I would argue is a good thing. If it's too real, it becomes very unresponsive, and interpreting everything separate from the game's physics allows for more control over the character.
I prefer a Sonic Frontiers 2. They made a formula, and if it's praised, they'll roll with it and more Sonic games would most likely come out quicker thanks to that formula. Sonic Team isn't ready for Sonic Adventure 3 yet, they haven't even dipped their toes into the adventure formula let alone made a remake of the Adventure games to start from there. Sonic Frontiers 2 would not be quicker, but also better if they made it this time period. Maybe, they can slowly add some elements from the adventure games (not anything huge like rail momentum, bounce, spindash and those things), then they can make an adventure framework from there. But a Sonic Frontiers 2 is less cost effective, way quicker and would be better if they did an Adventure 3 now. The only thing that might be a hassle is the story so they need to think outside the box and make a new open world story or if the Frontiers story needs a continuation, they can start from there.

The title of the game does not matter as much as the actual content and QUALITY of the game. Surely many people want to see the "SA3" title on the packaging, but it won't mean shit if the game does not live by it's name.

I think sonic adventure three would bring the series back, but they are going to use it in one of two ways. Either they will use it when the franchise is on is the lowest of lows, almost dead, so Adventure three will be their Hail Mary. Or, and this is the one that I think will happen, if frontiers succeeds, and the franchise slowly gets back its respect, SA3 will pour gallons of gasoline on that, and the franchise will get its respect back faster. Sonic adventure three is a VERY powerful name, and they have to use it as wisely as they can.

We barely even have enough information on Frontiers 1 to even be able to judge how the game will be. It’s way too early to even think about a sequel.
If Frontiers is as good as SA2, I don’t mind either one, but SA3 would DEFINITELY make people more excited than Frontiers 2

Sonic adventure 1 and 2 arent even that good as people make them out to be and are actually pretty bad with janky animations and all the problems people complain about frontiers (like the stages being too linear) plus more. Like sonic constantly about to clip through the ground and when jumping on a loop when trying to go backwards can glitch out the game to hell and back, and much more like spin dash that can literally make sonic clip through any wall. Also, the pacing is terrible, the casino pinball level is a waste of time and a shoehorned in unrelated gameplay style I dont like in sonic (a poor floaty version of pinball that wastes time with extra padding) and the other characters seem so unnecessary and are only their to progress the story and not enhance the gameplay experience
Compared to mario 64 which, the only thing that aged poorly was the graphics and the star catching mechanic that sends you back to the hub.
Also, I'm not defending sonic frontiers, I agree that the game looks shallow and dull with bad gameplay, but I think it looks just as dull as sonic adventure was and still is.

I think They should make a sequel to Sonic Frontiers than Sonic Adventure 3, first They need to make the DLC for Sonic Frontiers then make a Sonic Frontiers 2 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 6 and new Xbox console.
Sonic Adventure 3 IMO should never happen BC of how the game will get over hyped and if it ends up getting a 4.5/10 or worse a 1.5/10 then the gaming side of Sonic is doomed, especially if that Sonic Adventure 3 turns out to be worse than Sonic 06, the Movie side of Sonic and Sonic Prime are going to carry the IP even more (I would say the IDW comics aswell but the Comic book industry is dying and I love the IDW comics more so than the Archie comics)

Sonic frontiers weall I really can’t determine anything right now. Because so far from what we see the trailers the eight had a rough start due to the marketing and due to the flaws people pointed out during the gameplay. The gameplay has show pop and the animation need to be fixed all of that but Sonic frontiers have a good story fix animation. It’s the story needs to be built up to a sequel maybe it can happen depending on how it does in its performance. Sonic adventure three.
