Considering that dragons are described as being once common place (having been hunted to extinction) it could be that they are one of the pre-conjunction creatures native to that planet and the Golden Dragon would be the most evolved form of that species, think Higher Vampires vs. the rest of them. Assuming they are native or at least pre human, my bet would that there are a relatively small but definitely sizable amount of Golden Dragons left, likely living in Zerrikania where they arent hunted and if not go unnoticed in their human form, be worshiped in their dragon form. This is speculation but a fully sentient, flighted creature with the ability to morph into any form and essentially blend into any population would both know how to identify friend and foe AND be smart enough to know how to approach complex situations, if not just fly away.

We can thank Tolkien for his portrayal of dragons and the intelligence they bring. And we can thank Gary Gygax and wizards of the coast for the many different Dragon colors, personalities, and types of breath attacks we see in Dungeons and Dragons. I don't see the Witcher series as ripping off the dragon ideas, in fact imitation is a form of flattery. They use these dragons and expand the lore on not just the creatures themselves but on how they affect the world that they have learned to call home.
I honestly like how Gygax and the DnD writers that have progressed over the years including the current perkins, have even expanded on the tolkien archetype of intelligent dragons. Mercer showed in the first CR campaign how creatively using cunning plotting dragon(s), and I agree the way the witcher has portrayed dragons in it's overarching universe is definitely an homage to this archetype of dragon. The fact that sapkowski is using the colors of dragons that dnd uses to determine their traits with white black red dragons in the wow book and the ttrpg and uses intelligent dragons I think really illustrates that too.
In regards to the Black Dragons spitting something resembling mustard gas, it could be a variant of the Green Dragon's chlorine, as mustard gas is comprised of chlorine. Just a thought.
Just got my hands on the world of the witcher recently, i think its very cool that they chose to write it from a dragons perspective. Not only that, but one that actually enjoys living as a human.

Poor rock dragons, small (for a dragon :P ), can't breathe fire or acid, and probably couldn't fly either. At least they could engage in sophisticated discussions about rocks with rock trolls. ^^
I think that the Golden Dragon is likely some sort of crossbreed between two extremely ancient dragons that don't exist anymore, and some magic involved in some way to give it its polymorph abilities. I think that only one does exist, but not in the same way as Gaunter O'Dimm. It would have been possible for more to exist, and maybe there were more of them, but no more can be bred as the original two races would be extinct by now
I think there are more then one golden dragon I just believe they are rare, well they might all be in deserts or other Sandy areas, or in the unexplored regions of the world of the Witcher.

My theory regarding most of dragons. While extict in the northen realms and the southern imperial states I belive in east there's still a load of them.... why? well zerrikanians are worshiping dragons as they see them as superior beeings so one thing is certain: Humans don't hunt dragons there but try to preserve them as good as they can. So that means that golden dragons can also be found there... and what do you know.... Villentretenmerth, when was first encoutered by Geralt, was accompanied by two zerrikanian warriors(as shown in the art in the video) so Villenteretenmerth is not the only one that's gold I belive(and also Rock dragons and all rare dragons are probably found there much more easily compared to the Northen Realms).
I think that the trivia of Witcher is very interresting... I mean olgierd was a Lithuanian name, Von is almost every time used word in knight name's of ancient Germany and everic sounds a little bit slavic/Latin ... Toussaint is clearly based on southern France but they use gothic armour which was invented in Germany but used in the rose war of England and their swords are zweihanders... The nilfgaardean empire includes trivia of the holy Roman empire, Italy and a germanic/Latin language... Therefore all names in Witcher are english, german, polish(slavic) and in the blood and wine dlc french you can say that the whole Witcher history is based on the whole Europe history around poland... And if u look at the Witcher map you could see very interresting things I mean the nilfgaardean empire is northern of Toussaint and if you see the map from right as the bottom it's eastern of Toussaint (france)... It's the biggest empire like the holy Roman empire which was an empire clustered from German and Italian kingdoms, so it would make sense cause it's in the middle.... There are a bunch of more little kingdoms which are eastern and now part of nilfgaard and considering the fact that aedirn is most likely to be based on Germany and Austria we could say it's just Bavaria and Austria which are now part of the hre and the kingdom in the east of em (forgotten the name but it was the one with kaer morhen) could be based on tschechl-slovakia and northern of it is timeria which is clearly based on Poland which is in war with nilfgaard like Poland was against the Teutonic order which was a knight order which was very friendly with the hre as most of the members were born in the hre (which has armours that look a little bit like the nilfgaardean Standart Armour)
I believe there are more golden dragons. I think that because I believe Borch is not a very old creature due to the fact that he only seems to have one child
Golden dragons are said to nest amongst the dunes of Zerrikania which is odd considering how open a desert is Also they are revered in Zerrikania so could they actually have a thriving population and since they can polymorph do you think they use that ability to hide their actual population Also on that note would do a more in depth video about golden dragons I have a few theories about them if you're interested George
I originally wanted to see fights between Witcher Monsters and Monster Hunter monsters but there would be no contest, especially with dragons. Even with just size, MH's lower-tier monsters outrank some dragons from The Witcher. And if you put black dragons against each other then there would be a bloodbath, no matter how many dragons you have from The Witcher.
I think if there are more golden dragons they have such a disdain for humans they either keep away from humans at all costs by staying in caves and such or they completely left the land that the Witcher takes place in. Another idea I had was maybe at one point there were but they are so rare that there is only 1 golden dragon every few hundred years
I like to believe that humans in the world of the Witcher were the last sapient species introduced, maybe there was a conjunction of spheres that happened where humans became introduced to this world from our real world, where as all we know is war and no magic, religion and etc. The humans came from moments in our real history that has settlements who mysteriously disappeared for example the settlers of north carolina the roanoke county settlers who just up and mysteriously vanished with no trace. And other settlements in the past before pilgrimage to the Americas. After humans got settled on the witchers world, another conjunction or perhaps during that same conjunction it was when magic and other species of monsters were introduced.
