Hyms, one of the most intriguing monsters if you ask me. And one of the few that give me the creeps. What's so cool about them is that they preety much kill you with their power over your mind. Hyms are basicaly if depression became a monster.
Yea like a monster that appears only when someone suffers from like super big grief... and it's literary the manifestation of saddes or negative emotions.
I always thought of hyms as an allegory for severe manic depression...the dark thoughts, the self-harm, the takeover of the victim's actions and personality, the victim's feeling that they deseve pain and suffering, etc. I'm pretty sure that in the olden times, before modern medicie and psychology, this was actually what people imagined was happening to someone, who had severe depression...something similar to hyms in the witcher universe.
The Hym storyline in Witcher 3 is up there with the best storylines I've experienced in gaming. One of my friends, who is a parent, she was horrified by the option to trick it but had pretty same reaction as me when I first played that mission, a reaction of shock and relief
It is one of the best indeed, but i still find it odd to feel a happy ending in this quest as you have to slay 3 of the earl's men before this cinematic, like "oh well nothing happened, let's be relieved"
Have you ever thought about researching the "real-life" folk versions of this stuff? From my understanding most, if not all, are inspired by European mythology? I would love to hear some of that lore too!
You would be hard pressed to find ANY old culture that doesn't have anything like a Hym spoken of, worshipped or feared in their writings or story. Shoot, you would be hard pressed not to find creatures like that in any main religions today.
My mom walked by during this quest and sat down to watch because it blew her mind that games could be that incredible. She loves this game! One of the best quests in the game. Good video, WitcherGeorge!
"You'll find neither despair nor guilt here." WOW, what about the Jarl's men who Geralt slaughtered over this. I guess Cerys didn't think they were significant enough.
I always find it weird that Geralt murdered three innocent men who were just trying to protect their jarl. I always imagine that they were just incapacitated aha
I don't think they were actually killed; I've replayed the game a couple times and noticed that geralt will actually incapacitate the soldiers. It isn't consistent, but if you time it correctly geralt performs the finisher he uses to incapacitate people he doesn't wanna kill on the soldiers; basically a hard fuckin tap to their faces with his elbow I believe
@@redith137 I normally use signs during the encounter because it's bugged, but hey, if a couple of puny bandits can take a fully perked Igni to the face and survive free of traumatizing third degree burns, so can a couple of tough Skellige warriors.
I think hyms supposed to be the interpretation of human depressions & regrets that eating away their souls. Take it to "medieval time" & medieval people told it like some kind of demons/supernatural beings that corrupt depressed & guilty people. Basically like a case of "wet dream" & medieval people calling it "Succubus" attack. It's honestly really brilliant the way CDPR implemented IRL folklore & construct a genuine great lore out of it.
It might be possible that since hyms are deeply connected to humanity they might be from whatever world humans originated from in the Witcher. This is further supported by the fact that gaunter o dimm- another creature very linked to humanity seems to use hyms as minions in the riddle world he creates for Geralt
I honestly found this one creepy since it was a shadow even before the mission! The dude was literally standing there on the ground of his shadow! But I admit, it interests me.
I believe they’re also in Heart of Stone as well, if you choose to fight O’Dimm. I don’t remember if the shadow creatures are ever identified, but they sure do look like Hyms.

Hey George! Thank you for mentioning me when you made this video. I'd like to point out something though from the Hearts of Stone DLC: When Gaunter O'Dimm sends Geralt to that place with the mirrors, I noticed that some of the specters or whatever they were look similar to the hym from Skellige. I'm not exactly sure where O'Dimm comes from but maybe hym's come from the same place? Thanks again.
Witcher George back at it again with another awesome video but we need a lore video on the Witcher Geese. I keep killing them but they keep appearing! There must be a lore reasoning!! Help us Witcher George. You're our only hope
I loved the story arc on Skellige involving the Hym, it had such clever story telling and choice making options on CDPR's part. I hope more games take that route, give the player clever choices to make through paying attention to story details
I like to think that the hym lays dormant in Geralt until he gets the bad ending where Ciri doesn't return to him and it wakes and torments Geralt. It a headcannon that makes a lot of departure from the game but it's that only way Geralt can fall victim to the hym.
You can meet a Hym (or Hym like creature) in Gaunter O'Dimms nightmare gauntlet/Challenge for Von Everics/Geralts soul in the Heart of Stone DLC. It will appear on the path where it will have a similar fight moveset as if in the fight during the Possession Quest
ugh creepy creatures 😱 it gives me goosebumps everytime I replay this quest lol I've never try the Witcher's way to do this quest before. Pesta next maybe?

Wait, does that mean the hym you fight during Gaunter O'Dimm's final "battle" isn't quite a real hym? I always found these "nightmare-ish" worlds and their enemies confusing, like the one in the painted world made by Iris. Are they projections of some sort? Or are specters somehow special in this cases.
You forget, Cerys had already asked Geralt to trust her when he explained how to 'get rid' of a Hym, I think it's all laid out before you go out swimming for their family sword in the game.
the only thing that always escaped me is how Geralt knew about the Hyms. Or how anyone knows, as they are extremely rare, haunt one person at a time and are incredibly secretive. I'd understand if there were actual exorcists or spiritualists in the witcher universe, but I wonder how witchers and scholars managed to discover these fiends and understand them.
There were many more monsters back in the days, and witchers of the time recorded everything they learned in books. Witchers have a shit ton of homework aswell during their training

Maybe Hyms are of similair origin as O'Dimm or are in some other tied to him, as they are described as demons.
You're actually able to fight one in the HoS expansion, albeit a much weaker version of it, functioning more like a common enemy. Also it's obviously in the same game as this one which still does prove your point to an extent. Just thought I'd mention it.
