How To Replace Wheel Hub on Boat Trailer
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 кві 2016
- Danny Rivera at Jrodz Automotive (Bradenton, Fl.) does a phenomenal job when he replaces a rotten/rusted wheel hub from a boat trailer. He installs a pre-assembled wheel hub that already has all the bearings and seals installed on it. It is cheaper and more convenient.
I don't care what the utube topic is.... i just LOVE watching a video where the person KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING, video's it well, and gets straight to the fkn point. great job dude.
The guy in the background talking is the type of guy that’s always hanging around a shop, that never knows when to shut up
It is great to see our hub in this video. This is Top Metalwork, axle parts manufacturer. If you see TMW, that's ours.
Great tutorial. Love the tip about blowing the old grease out of the spindle with compressed air.
Thanks for the video. You made the job of replacing hubs easy and very well explained.
👏👏I’ve been overthinking this whole project and you’ve made it super simple, thank you for doing the video and Danny for an excellent job installing all the parts 👊👍
Thank you. Your help is greatly appreciated. Bob from Depoe Bay Oregon.
Thanks guys great vid will be doing this on the weekend. Big hi from Australia!
I couldn't get the dust cap off of my wheel for the life of me using a screw driver and prying at it like others did till I came across your video where you use channel lock pliers to pull it off instead. Thanks!
Dude you saved me time and money thanks a million...... You get straight to the point. Thanks keep videos like this coming.
I didn't know Arod changed trailer hubs. Great insight.
Haha
Lol
Thank you! This was very, VERY informative.
Thanks
Awesome video!!! Never done bearings.. learned alot drop the vid!
Thanks for the video Mr Martinez, it's appreciated
Good info helped me out fixing my trailer thanks
Thanks for this video great channel. 👍
Thanks! Nice video
Great tutorial thank you
Thanks. I have to replace mine tomorrow. Bought online as my original blew out.
Amazing video. Good job explaining everything
Thank you
Great job.
i wish you were around new york city!!!!! i need to get this done too...
Great tutorial!
Thanks, I learned something new. I still have the grease fittings on them with the bearing buddies on, forgot to take them out and blow with compressed air. Don't have an air compressor so i will use the cans, hopefully has enough power.
Thank You!
Nice video, very well presented.
Although, I would NOT weld on any rim that has a mounted tire on it.
for the benefit of we viewers that don't know the pros and cons, would you care to elaborate for us why not to?
@@grizzlya1257 for starters, check out this video. ua-cam.com/video/HiLeji8bLOk/v-deo.html
@@Mr40tt That is a good starting point. How about other ways to bond the cap better than just the friction fit? Loctite or other adhesive that can be broken by manhandling if/when servicing?
@@grizzlya1257 I was an investagator for a living. So I just seen the results of when things went dead wrong.
Although I was also a welder and blacksmith, I have no opinion other than what I said about "not welding or adding heat to an inflated tire. "
I actually knew a man who's life changed for the worst do that type of accident!
I think this kind of discussion is necessary for people to consider how they will choose do something safely!
@@Mr40tt Makes sense to me. I wonder if the OP if this video would consider editing the video to have a text box saying "don't do this" or a red "X" over the part where the mechanic did that, just to prevent someone seeing the video and not checking the comments ?
When installing a new hub is doe it matter if spindle is tapered or not, or u only have to worry bout it if u guys just replacing the wheel bearing, but if whole hub should b fine regardless of spindle?
There should be a zerk fitting at the end of the spindle. That is far superior than the Bearing Buddy in my opinion. It pumps grease through both bearings in and out the front. With the bearing buddy you'll have to take the wheel off to replace the grease.
everything is good except welding the cap...for me that is a no no
for the benefit of we viewers that don't know the pros and cons, would you care to elaborate for us why not to?
@@grizzlya1257 2 reasons : (1) sooner or later someone is going to have to get back in there. a grinding tool or chisel will be required. a removal will ruin the cup. It will no longer seal properly. (2) when welding, the current will cross over the bearings. The bearings must spin as smoothly as possible. The current from the welder may or may not pit the balls of the bearing. Don't take that chance, don't weld.
Great video! Avoid the tackweld tho the thread lock is plenty :)
Just a question with all that electricity going through the middle of the trailer will that not fried the lights the reverse lights on the trailer
Thanks!

How much do you charge? Do you come across the bridge to Pinellas?
Did you replace the sleeve you removed off the inner axle? I didn’t see it go back on? I don’t think it comes with a universal hub?? Great video!!
Una pregunta esos hubs de 5 rotos son universales los quiero comprar para que tu los instales
Mine has a grease zerk on the end of the spindle which is where you blew out the old grease. .. Maybe looking at it wrong but don't see how that bearing buddy will force grease thru to the back correctly???
Great Video Thanks!
In my experience those particular hubs seem to let the most water in, the regular old hubs without the grease nipple hold out water for longer periods therefor lasting season after season,
I’ve tried these hubs thinking I was doing my self justice but the fact was they were failing only after a year or two of use
Just stick to the regular old sealed hubs
What’s that part called where the bolt holds the wheels in the middle
I've owned salt water boat trailers and never weld them. I replace every three yrs and don't even find that water got in.
you prolly dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can stream all the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend recently :)
@Dorian Marley definitely, been using Instaflixxer for since november myself :)
Who knew A-rods little brother knew about hubs
Welding burns off the galvanized zinc. If anything just tap your cap or bearing buddy with a rubber mallet once in a while
Have you ever see anyone spindle shaft broke off from there boat trailer. Can that happen?
Lock tight on the cap? How are you going to remove it in the future
You should’ve greased that spindle before you put that hub on
The area between back of hub to end of axle that is rusted mine is just the same as axle your putting new hub on my trailer guy is saying replace entire axle due to that yet it looks same as one you just put new hub on is it necessary to replace whole axle you only changed hub appreciate the video and cant wait to hear your answer thnks
Most places try to replace everything. More money for the shop. Not necessarily a bad thing.
@@BAND-MAID-USA okay thank you
Replaced just hub
I live in Bradenton. Neat
very handy
sand paper grit varies the one used on video was 800grit depending on burrs on spindle
and is that strip made by cutting up a sanding belt?
Thanks
Why using red loctite ? That is almost like a permanent solution. Why is the Blue not enough ?
Mine is still got play like it’s not pushed all the way back on the spindle but it appears to be.
Does that weld at the end have to be done ? I dont have that
No, it is a complete overkill. Welding that bearing buddy on only ensures that you’ll be bringing that trailer back to him to take it off.
Great Video great to learn from the pros, could you list the grit size of the sandpaper you used to sand spindles Cheers
elshaddai1969 it's Emery paper if you are wondering. though I don't which grit but in my experience all Emery paper is the same.
220grit
I know this video is a older one but I just purchased a boat trailer and 2 spear wheel hub complete kits. It already has some grease inside the hub but is that enough grease out the box if I ever need to change it or should I add more once its installed. Please advise thanks!
Add more. Use Bearing buddies and keep them well greased while you are launching (summer). In the winter when you won't use it much. Take everything apart, remove all the grease and re-grease again everything making sure to fill the bearing buddy with grease. Check all the bearings and if you even think or imagine that maybe the bearings need replacing, replace them all. They are cheap enough. If you burn one up you will be looking at replacing everything including the shaft. Expensive. Never use locktite on the bearing buddy. Never weld anything there.
Its the other guy for me lol
Can I get a picture of Danny working! Hahahahaha
Always force grease thru the bearing before you install them.
As someone without experience but looking to learn, I thought the hub was prepacked. Other than that, he added grease to the nipple until the rubber cap bulged. Is there more greasing to do?
Already pre packed and greased
Bearing buddies are not a good idea. People usually add too much grease until it blows out the rear seal.
Every time you can see it all inside of the rim when they're back in their boats up
How much do he charge
relax Danny. u r good.
All that work and the trailer tire is BALD as shit lol, might want to invest in tires
Hi Help .i live in Ireland and need new hub the exact same can anyone tell me where to buy it .. American trailer parts in Ireland can’t be found ..
if you can help . Tell me the exact name and size of the 5 stud hub ..
best wishes from Dublin Ireland ..
Paul
Its just a universal 5 stud hub assembly
You da man this fucking tire came off going fishing fatherday now trying to fix it
He got his money's worth outta that rag!
Was this filmed off of Whitney ave?
Nope off cortez on 30st
@@dannyrivera4428 oh ok...I deliver down there all the time...small world
Cool coll yea small world!
I hope he's not the one who will take it back off after welding it permeantly close lol gonna catch hell getting it back off
Don't know what an angle grinder is?
As long as it isnt Ramlin wow shoddy as hell. Must be addicts building them
My first How To: video
I would of checked the seal fit on the shaft before i just slapped it all together .
If you use Loctite go with BLUE Loctite, not RED. Red is for permanent attachment and has to be removed with Heat.
The dude welding it on
Ever heard of a heat gun?, and did you not not notice that the guy WELDED it on. LOL.
Use emery cloth not sandpaper
I wanted to ask about that. Emory cloth protects from effecting the spindle surface and diameter, negatively? What grits would you recommend?
I use like 800 works great!
Nice video. People need to learn how to turn off autofocus on cameras.
Focus.
Remember boys and girls, there's no such thing as using too much grease!
wrong. shove too much grease in there, might blow out the seals. use just enough.
Sounds like Danny doesn’t work lol

What’s the deal with those rubber gloves people are wearing nowadays when they work on stuff? Hell! I remember my Dad working on cars and trucks back in the 60’s and 70’s and he never wore any of those panty waist girly rubber gloves. He’d just wash his hands in gasoline when he was done with a Pall Mall red hanging from his lips. He didn’t die from lead poisoning from the gas or oil that was on his hands and arms.
He’s 80 years old now and still ticking. I guess all these so called mechanics nowadays are just feminine and don’t wanna get any grease under their fingernails! 😭
Why would a REAL MAN be concerned with what a woman wants to touch? Like I said, REAL MEN don’t wear panty waist gloves!
Perhaps a real man, but not necessarily a real SMART man. Kind of hard to gas clean dirty lungs. I don't like the fill of working with gloves, but I really don't like my hands all cut up and my nails full of grease, diesel, or gas proof Permatex. Also, I regularly empty out the black water tanks on my motor home and sailboat. Please advise on what "real men" should do while working in s**t.
Wowza. Insecure male.
I don't think your buddy can help anyone outside the state of Florida
No part of that hub is waterproof.
