  • The New Balance "Fresh Foam X" 880v14 is a firm, frill-free daily trainer. It uses a different midsole foam than the "Fresh Foam X" 1080v13, though the foam is named the same in both shoes. In this video, I put the 880v14 through my double run day test with a treadmill 12 miler in the morning and an 8 mile recovery run around the neighorhood in the afternoon. I also test the shoe's walking comfort on a light hike and show you how I fuel on these big mileage days.

    Great review as always. And, you hit a nerve with me regarding the running shoe industry. As you said, call it Fresh Foam X for the cushy version and Fresh Foam Y for the firm version. Running shoe companies really should do a better job defining the characteristics of their shoes. Hopefully, that will change in the future. Keep up the good work.

    I used the 880 v14 for 8 miles yesterday and really enjoyed it (for a daily trainer feel), but it was on the treadmill so it gave me more bounce. I am really curious to try them outside.

    It's annoying running in a really uninspiring shoe when you know you have better options. I agree with a lot of the alternatives you list and I'd add the Novablast, too, with v4 at $140, it is a decently versatile shoe. I've seen that tempeh so many times at TJ's. Maybe I'll have to try the teriyaki tempeh for the kids one of these days.

      Thanks for the novablast 4 addition - I've gotta try that one soon. Also lightlife makes some really good tempeh that comes pre marinated. I think they have a tempeh bacon and a buffalo flavor

    I appreciate the in-depth review. I thought that maybe you’d like the Hyperion Max as much as the Adizero SLs because of it is lightweight with the extra cushioning similarities. What was the difference between the two?

    • @supwell
      @supwell  5 місяців тому +2

      Hyperion max felt awkward and uncomfortable at certain paces for my mechanics. Even though the Adizero SL is firm the geometry worked a lot better for how I run. Hyperion max works really well for a lot of people though, especially strong mid/forefoot strikers

    I feel you on the hills. Lucky for my speed days I have a public asphalt track I can grind on. Perfect 2 mile warm up away from the house.
    You describe this shoe how I describe the suacony shift. It’s described on their website as a max cushion shoe and it’s by far the hardest shoe I have I think. I’m certain it’s going to cause an injury. Seems durable though. 115 miles and hardly no wear.

    • @supwell
      @supwell  5 місяців тому +2

      That's clutch you have a track nearby. The closest tracks/flat greenways to me are all 20+ minutes away. Btw I actually loved the endorphin shift 3 - definitely firmer but the rocker geometry worked super well for my stride. I got 350 miles out of my pair last year

    • @kgunz4282
      @kgunz4282 5 місяців тому

      @@supwell it’s definitely an old beat up track but it’s still completely useable.
      I’m glad you enjoyed the shoe. I’ve been trying to myself but I don’t know. I’ve had maybe 2 solid runs. Seems like a casual run in them takes a lot more effort than if I were to hope in literally any other shoe in my closet lol. I don’t know. Must be me haha

    Just ordered a pair of 880's and at first I was discouraged when you said it was a 6/10 at everything but honestly for a first running shoe i think this will work good for me as well as i needed a wide fit shoe and most running shoes or athletic shoes in general just hurt my feet. We'll see how they feel

  • @mickyward3716
    @mickyward3716 5 місяців тому +1

    Love my 880s. I find the formula perfect for a do it all shoe. The upper fits like a glove and is great for a gym shoe. I can do lateral and vertical movements , box, lighter squats , deads, ect, and then take them on the treadmill. I'm not a high milage runner, but I do alote of fast stride work, and I find them perfect for that as they are light and have some snap. They are also great to slip on and go run errands. I'm 185 lbs, I found the 1080 was wayyyy too soft for my liking. I only use mine for dressing up or casual walks.

    • @supwell
      @supwell  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah that sounds like a good use for them actually. What's the longest you typically like running in them? I could see myself enjoying these for gym workouts/CrossFit - but for me not suitable for running more than an hour in comfort. And 1080 is very soft for sure - brooks ghost max would be a good alternative to the 880 for someone who wants a little more cushion but not super soft like 1080

    • @mickyward3716
      @mickyward3716 5 місяців тому +1

      @supwell I got the ghost max but only use them as a dress shoe in triple black. My runs are typically 5k tops. I focus primarily on strength training and muscle growth. My cardio is more cross fit style or boxing. Or short, fast runs.

    • @stefaniesmith7117
      @stefaniesmith7117 4 місяці тому

      Interesting. I’m a CrossFit coach, and I try really hard to get people out of running shoes while in the gym. I can’t ever imagine using these for box jumps, and a rope climb would totally shred them. You are totally right that they fit like a glove though. I wore them to work all day as well as an 8 mile run, and that upper felt great all day.

    • @mickyward3716
      @mickyward3716 4 місяці тому

      @stefaniesmith7117 rope climbs would shred them you're right. I should rephrase what I said. For hardcore cross fit , get a metcon or something with guards and a firmer midsole for sure. If you want something in the middle where you can do some light indoor or outdoor training with running and hitting obstacles, I would use the 1080. Box jumps onto cement ledges they work great. The grip in doors is not the best. That's my one negative.

  • @bwatt286
    @bwatt286 4 місяці тому

    Ok then, so if the 1080 is way to soft and offers to little stability for daily training, what would you recommend? for reference my race shoe/fast show is the rebel!

    I looked up the stack heights of the 880v12 and v14 and the 880v12 is 32 mm and the v14 is 29 mm so they went with a lower stack which is a bit puzzling. I'm using the v12 as my DT and it's as you describe - on the harder side and it's just something that I don't think about much. It gets the job done but nothing special about it. I don't think that I'd buy them if they are harder than my v12s due to the lower stack.

    I agree with you, I wish they would use a slightly different name for their foams, almost feel it’s lying because in this case, you think you’re getting a lower stack of the freshfoamX from the 1080 but you’re not.

    Thanks for the review. I just bought this shoe and put it to a 6miles run and I can say that I agree with everything you said about it. I am skeptical about the other options you listed because I have a very wide feet 2E+ and high arc.
    I have a Saucony endorphin speed 2 that has accumulated over 400 miles while it is a huge contrast to v14 I can’t use it for long run without getting blisters.
    I use both for DT but Saucony for tempo and short runs and v14 for long runs.
    I plan to replace the Saucony but with what I have no idea 😂.
    Any idea of a shoe that has a support for:
    - wide feet
    - high arch
    - good 4 a half marathon
    - tempo run

    • @supwell
      @supwell  4 місяці тому +1

      The top two shoes I'd recommend for replacing the speed 2 are the new balance sc trainer v2 and adidas Boston 12. Sc trainer v2 is a little softer and more comfortable - not as good as the speed 2 for top end speed but a more accommodating fit and more stable. Boston 12 is firmer but a great shoe for running fast like the speed 2. It's a bit polarizing but I have absolutely loved mine workouts and long runs. But if you want soft then definitely the sc trainer v2

      Hyperion max aren't a bad shoe but they didn't work for my mechanics. It has a heel cutout which made for super awkward landings at slower paces. And even when running fast I didn't love the feel of the geometry - it's a good speed shoe for midfoot/forefoot strikers but wasn't right for me

    How would you compare this shoe to the 860v13, if you have run in that at all? I have been using 860s for about 2 years now (I think I am on my 11th pair), and I am having some issues, that may lead to me switching to a neutral shoe, but I want to stick with New Balance, as I have come to love their shoes, and I know that they will work for me. I just wondered how they might compare. The 860, I know, has a bit more stack in the heel, as well as of course the medial post, but I have no issue with needing to break in a shoe. I run about 50 miles a week anyway during track season, so this wouldn't take long to break in. I am certainly open to something like the Saucony Ride 16/17 or even the Tempus, if I don't decide to switch from stability shoes, but I don't like Asics at all, and Nike's trainers are often too narrow for me, because, I don't need wide sized shoes, but I do prefer a very roomy toe box, because my feet a little messed up from playing soccer in soccer cleats for 14 years.

      Saw your other comment too - it should be okay for a first running shoe but it's not my favorite for anything. I'd highly recommend the 860v14 from new balance - similar name but completely different feel. Way more pop to it and a lot more comfortable. If you're going to keep the 880 and end up liking it, I'd suggest the Asics novablast 4 as a shoe to pair with it. Has more cushion, a protective but fun feel and is great for longer runs, so as you start building up mileage it'll be a nice shoe to rotate with the 880. It also comes in wide
