fun fact, the netherlands is also close with japan because: The trade between the two countries started in 1609, when the Dutch East India Company established a post at Hirado. During the Shimabara Uprising of 1637, Christian Japanese revolted against the Tokugawa Shogunate. They were assisted by the Dutch during this uprising. Nevertheless, unlike the Portuguese, the Dutch were not interested in spreading Christianity. Portuguese traders who were exiled to the artificial island of Dejima after 1634 for closer surveillance were expelled from the country in 1639. The VOC was admittedly the only Western representation in Japan from 1639, but in 1641 the Dutch were forced to take up residence at Dejima if they wanted to continue trading relations with the Shogun. Dejima remained a Dutch trading post until 1859.
And they even adopted a new word "Rangaku". Rangaku is the Japanese word for 'Dutch studies'. The Japanese learned new knowledge and techniques from the Netherlands and Europe through Dutch books. This eventually helped Japan modernize quickly.

They're right to complain because of getting overcrowded by too many tourists and the multitude of AirBnB's. No normal citizen likes their town to be overrun by millions of tourists, while half of them are types that come for the beer, the drugs and the red light district.
Because of Covid-19 most cities today are more relaxed and most citizens like it that way...

It is not that the animals need to know where the crossings are; the crossings are at the location where most animals used to travel. And there are fences bordering the highways near the crossings so the wildlife is kept away from the traffic. Most of these fences are at a 20-50 meter distance from the road and at an angle so the animals are steered to the crossing. There are also tunnels under streets and highways for the creeping migrating animals like toads.

5:59 actually you have had Dutch specialists coming to the US and playing an advisory role. Still one other difference the US has with the Netherlands is that the Dutch are not scared of paying taxes, in order for the government to invest in collectively funded water works and measures to handle the incoming water by the many rivers that make up our river delta. Yes, the sea is only half of our problem. Our water works cost a lot, to build and to maintain, but what you get In return is a system that protects you from from flooding with a once in 10.000 years chance. As far as I know private insurance against flooding isn’t a thing in the Netherlands.

The first stock exchange was basically this company, the first public traded company. It made the Netherlands the richest country in Europe.
Basically Spain ruled the seas, 80 years war which we won and the Dutch ruled the seas after that England took over.
And because people were rich because of it and had to show it off, hence get rare tulips in the garden. Enter Tulip Mania. The first big bubble.

You make it sound like the Netherlands were first.
Slavery is much much older than that. Even the bible talks on slavery, romans had slaves too. Also in Africa the slave trade was booming before the VOC came in, tribes selling conquered other tribes so to say. The VOC was the first public traded company, however the Spanish were already known for the slave trade.
However Portugal started it all in 1441 (for western European countries).

Something REALY special about the relationship between the Dutch and the US of A EVERYONE should know: The United States was recognized for the first time by a Dutch governor. And the Dutch supported the USA with huge amounts of gunpowder and massive loans from “Amsterdamse Bankiers” during that essential period of time. Furthermore the Dutch founded New York (New Amsterdam). And what about this: The authors of the Declaration Of Independence used the Dutch Plakkaat van Verlatinge as a model. And there’s a LOT more! (Wallstreet, Broadway, Harlem, etc., etc., all from Dutch origin). And thus The Netherlands will always be 1st! Any idea what would have become of America without the Dutch? Me neither. But it’s worth thinking about.

Willem van Oranje was not the first King. In fact, the country was a republic in his time (end of the 16th century). Only in 1814/1815 after the French (Napoleon) were defeated across Europe (eg. at Waterloo) The Netherlands became a monarchy. And another Willem (van Oranje-Nassau) became King Willem I. Almost 3 centuries after the Willem van Oranje (William the Silent) who led the Dutch revolt against the Spanish king at the end of the 16th century.

Tulips don’t really die. They’re bulbs. The flowers grow from the bulb and bloom in spring and die, but the bulb is harvested back from the soil and dried, to be replanted the next wintertime. So the bulbs were traded and worths a fortune. Not the flowers.

There are actually several types of windmills. As mentioned, the water pump mills, then the grinding mills for production of flour, and sawmills. The latter were actually the reason the Dutch could produce commercial ships and warships faster than others. Quite handy for a naval world power, which the Netherlands really were then.

Yeah. We have been all over the world, for colonising, selling slaves and just basically rule the seas. 'Apartheid' is a Dutch word and we were at the top of the slavetrading business, and the VOC was the first world multinational company, robbing countries and murdering their population across the world. The trading business made Amsterdam the central trading city of the world and the country extremely rich in the 17th century. This is what we call 'the golden age' in our history books, but not really mentioning the way we got all those things as I wrote earlier. As a Dutch man I am proud of things like Dutch painters, inventions and water systems, and also that we beat the entire British fleet on their own soil. The fact that we are in the top 5 of export countries in the world is quite spectacular as well. However, the dark side of our history needs more attention in our society.

Technically we donot enforce parts of our own laws regarding drugs. But be aware that if you do come over. You can still be apprehended for it. Depending on the amount of drugs you are carrying, and where you are using it.
E.g. if you're standing infront of an elementary school, you will get in trouble when cops come around, as a simple example.
And regarding clogs, the wooden shoes, you're actually supposed to wear them over your shoes to keep your shoes safe and dry in the muddy ground when you're a farmer working in the field. Or... That's what they used to be used for. So the uncomfortable part isn't that bad.

Well Clueless_Lulu, usually barriers (preferably natural, but sometimes plain old fences) are used to guide the animals towards these 'ecoducts'. Though depending on the type of wildlife this isn't always needed. Most animals are aware of how dangerous roads are, but roads cut up their natural habitat. Meaning less space, food, mates etc. so when a safe passage like an ecoduct is build much of the wildlife will find it after a while.
Still even simple fences cut roadkill accidents by ~50% so even if it's less pretty/'natural' it's preferred to guide animals to the ducts to prevent unnecessary loss of life.

Carrots were yellow originally, you can still find yellow carrots in Dutch nature actually. These were a lot smaller and thinner. The orange carrot that we know today is indeed created to honor the Dutch king back in the day. The color was changed and it was also changed to be bigger then before. Even creating a super sized carrot that would be about 40 cm in length (in some cases even 50 cm) and as thick as your wrist. These are called 'winterpeen' or 'winter wortel' (winter carrot). These are usually used for winter dishes only as it would allow any household to have a lot of carrot during the winter as carrots don't rot as easily as apples for example. You would find these huge carrots often in stews and soups.
Weed isn't legal, the police will just allow it if you have 5 grams or less on you.
I own clogs, I do wear them but mostly for within the garden or if it isn't too far to walk. If anyone wants to try it out, go to a clog shop and ask them to help you getting the right ones for your feet. There are not just only male and female versions but also different style clogs. The male variant is the most well known, the female variant is usually smaller due to the female feet being smaller. Also they are narrower then male clogs.
Mills are not just to pump out water, they were used for a wide range of things. Milling grain, saw mills for wood to name just 2 things.
EDM started in the Netherlands, this might be why the Dutch DJ's are the best in the world.
Friesland, or rather the Frisii, were vikings in their own right. A detail that was intentionally wiped out of the minds of the people. Only recently hard proof was shown that they were indeed one of the viking groups in the world. Even in original Beowulf saga's the Frisii are mentioned. The Frisii were just as dangerous as their Danish and Norwegian counterparts but rather used trading instead. It were the Frisii that stood up against the Romans and managed to beat them getting more and more people on their side. They just were not as hungry for land as later vikings that are more well known. All they wanted is their lands back and the Romans out.
Tulips are originally from Turkey, however the Dutch loved them so much that they started to care more for them and breed a lot of variations. Tulip fields are still a thing in the Netherlands but they are more and more shifted to areas where tourists won't disturb the fields. Tourists are known to get on the fields, pluck the flowers and try to make selfies which on turn destroys the harvests.

i can explain how we got so many good Dj's...
in the end of the 80's and early 90's there was a music scene house that originated in the netherlands...it evolved into hardcore (music with over 800beats per min)
And than techno/trans music became world wide populair in the early 2000's so a lut of Dutch Dj's went hardcore to techno/trans becuase its more populair but also more easy to make.
And they had a 20 year headstart
