I am a mom of 8 and I completely agree with you, I love my high chair, bouncy seat, and baby carriers. I had recently gotten a playpen that some one had gotten for me at a good will, for $20 It's a big one, so I can't use it indoors, but we have used the foam mat inside and it has done wonders for lining the hardwood floor I have in my living room so when baby who is learning to run, doesn't hurt herself so badly when she does fall. Other than that, momma you got this...One of the reasons I watch your channel. You get me, and I get you. lol. (even though we don't know each other :) ) Prayers for safe delivery of baby #9, from all of us, Gabriel, Caleb, Abigail, Silas, Judah, Evelyn, Truly, Selah, and myself Mom, Misty. (43)

Fellow mom of nine here! I've been following for a handful of years but don't comment often at all. However, I just felt compelled to let you know how refreshing this video is! I watch other UA-cam moms of many and find their materialistic lifestyles to be increasingly unappealing. I appreciate just how "normal" you seem, as well as true to yourself: frugal, content, and down to earth. Thanks for being so relatable as a mom! :)

Absolutely agree. I am pregnant with twins after not having had a baby since 2009, so in many ways i'm starting from square one. I've been all over UA-cam watching videos in this genre and sometimes I'll see a gadget and genuinely wonder "what even is that?" 😅 I know it's been a while for me, but I know that babies don't need all that much.

I’m pregnant with my fourth and let me tell you I usually thrift a lightly used bassinet every time and wash it really well we finally threw away our old baby swing as it wouldn’t work w electrical connection or batteries anymore but I still put my last baby in it and just tied a long ribbon to it and if I was sitting a little away from her on the couch I would pull the ribbon string again to swing her 😂😂. We have had the same light weight highchair for every single kid and it was like only 50$ 😂. With every single pregnancy I make every single free type of registry I can and get all the freebies etc etc. and usually family sends a lot of clothes or I swap hand me downs with friends who just had the opposite gender or older of the same etc makes it so easy. I buy some new clothes and stuff and have had to buy a few new if you knew car seats but that’s about it lol. A sturdy double stroller will take u really far too. I would love to get into cloth diapers but we go to a few different congregations and different events and I feel like we’re just adventurous so having cloth is difficult for me but I’ve had a few before and I think it helps cut down a bit

Lots of the little flannel baby blankets. I used them as blankets, swaddles, and burp cloths. No need for all the separate things. And they will sell swaddles for babies way too old to be using them. If they can roll and you are restraining their arms you are putting them at risk of suffocating. ❤ retired PICU nurse 🙏🏻

After five miscarriages, my niece finally had a baby at age 37! She’s been so smart! She’s gathered all things from friends and spent money mostly on books. She uses cloth diapers and I send her disposables for “convenience” every month, with a new book, too. She’s raising the baby bilingual and is in Honduras right now visiting grandma. Now she understands so many of her husband’s ideas about sleep practices… her seventh-month old son is loving his hammock!

One note on car seats from your friendly Child Passenger Safety Tech (CPST)Not all babies fit well in convertibles. If you baby is smaller, like 6 lbs and under, you will be hard pressed to find a convertible that fits and protects baby correctly. They will likely slump and that causes potential for airway issues. In that case a bucket seat is necessary as there are ones that go down to 3 lbs. I have found that most babies over 8 lbs will fit in a convertible ok. Also only ever use padding that comes with your seat. Don’t add anything else. All the cute padding that is sold separately is not only unnecessary but can be dangerous as it changes how the seat functions and may make positional asphyxiation more possible or cause car seat failure in an accident. :-) if anyone has questions, please reach out to your local CPST. We are always more than happy to help.

Mom of 6 here. I found that as a young mom, I rarely used the changing table, so we got rid of it. By the time baby #4 came along, I was 12 years older and standing to change baby was much more comfortable than getting down on the floor or even the bed or couch. So we bought a changing pad to put on the counter height dresser. Saved my back and my sanity!
Totally agree that less is more. Babies are completely content with 1 or 2 toys and a house full of love.

Mom of 5 boys here.. I have not used a crib or bassinet much for my babies. They mostly slept in adult bed, co slept till a year old. And then transferred to another adult bed with siblings. No cribs, no toddler beds .. worked great to just scoot the bed against the wall and at a year old they’re usually getting in and out by themselves. Another thing I always did, is put them on their tummy, starting a week old. Tummy time is SO important for physical and brain development!

I was a “minimalist” before kids, but my friends insisted I have a baby shower. We put on the invites that no gifts are required, but if people desire to buy one, we would appreciate one cloth diaper (of a particular brand sold in the store near my house). We ended up with ~30 pocket cloth diapers! My third baby who is now 9lbs with tiny legs is just big enough to start using them as she hits the two month mark 😊 my kids use disposables as newborns and once they’re in the pull up phases. Cloth could still work at the later phases but my boys didn’t potty train early, and the cloth diapers get too huge with the absorbency needed for them at 2.5-3 years before the transition to undies. Thankfully by that age it’s just pee! Great tips!

I have a good tip that I would recommend to new moms. When pregnant with my first son, my sister-in-law gifted me with premade, reusable cleaning wipes for cleaning baby. She used an old towel, cut into squares and sewed a zig zag stitch around the edges to prevent raveling. I'm not sure how many she made but I had a nice stack of them and just washed them with the diapers to reuse again and again. They saved me tons of money on diaper wipes. Hope that helps some of you.

I had some muslin squares, very thin cotton and maybe four/five feet long that I used for everything - wrapping baby, mopping up messes, putting under baby before changing, as a sunshade, as a bag, as a towel, and so many years later they’re still going strong as cloths, scarves, etc.
I was wrapping one around my neck last week because it’s so cold outside (they are the softest and I choose them before pretty but scratchy if I’m not expecting to take off my coat as they’re getting grubby), and it made me smile as I remembered it used to snuggle up my tiny baby in 1996!

BUCKET SEATS!!!!!! If you have close trustworthy friends and family having children in the same era but staggered birth dates I really recommend sharing a buck seat! Bucket seat is very very helpful if you live in a volatile climate- in 100+ F or -25 F I would hate to put a newborn directly into convertible. But by 4-6 months it doesn’t seem like such a big deal to have them encounter the elements with precautions so you can pass it to the next family.

Something I would add is having a container of formula for "just in case" scenarios. There are no lactation consultants in my area. Babies born with tongue ties are common also. Colostrum is meant to sustain babies until milk comes in as newborn stonachs are only the size of a grape. However, those emergency scenarios can happen at any age range. Having a formula you vetted out yourself with ingredients you are comfortable with is much better than what doctors give newborns sometimes with high fructose corn syrup. But there is a time and place for hospital formulas also in NICU cases.

I just wanted to add some more info about pumping. Most insurance companies have specific websites that you can go through. Or on different sites, different pumps may be available or covered.
As someone who exclusively pumped after my third and met a lot of exclusive pumping moms, I would suggest trying out your pump not in a crisis because you may need different sized flanges (most of the women in my 100,000+ member group needed a size that didn't come with the pump) using the wrong size can be painful and cause more problems. Additionally flange size can change throughout a postpartum journey.

This comes in handy alot especially at random places where a diaper changing table isn't available. A diaper changing basket upstairs and downstairs is good especially when recovering from birth. Just a regular basket with basic diaper changing needs plus some nurse pads and lanolin ointment for nursing in the first month or so.

Lots of great info! When i had my first baby 45 years ago, I got sucked into the layette list that was, of course, put together by retailers looking to see you more products. Today, influencers are great at making you feel inferior if you dont have all the latest & greatest stuff. And that's all it is, stuff.
Your recommendations are spot on-basics because when you're a new mom, the stress of taking care of the excess stuff isn’t worth the money & space they occupy.

Awesome video - first I've seen from a real mom with much experience. I do have one item that I consider essential and that is the baby wipe warmer. I don't even have en electric can opener - so easy to just use the twister hand held model. When I saw that gift for my daughter's baby, I thought it was just a gimmic and waste of money BUT soon changed my mind when I was changing my new granddaughter's diaper in the winter and used the warm wipe - she didn't start fussing - but was comfortable. I do think a toilet paper warmer would be way over the top though. LOL

Had my babies 20 and 18 years ago. If I had it to do over, i would forego the crib and just get a pack and play to use as a crib. Bassinets are only good a few weeks and a waste of money. Toddler beds are awaste of money too. Go direct to a twin bed. A waist high dresser (get second hand from good will if money is tight) as a changing table and diaper storage. A comfey rocking chair with a low foot stool are a good investment and a back saver for nursing mothers. You dont need a nursing pillow because a regular pillow will work but it sure is a nice gift to register for. Spend your money on glass bottles and a good quality breast pump and milk bags so you can freeze your excess breast milk. She is 100% accurate about why you need a pump. Also, pumping into a bottle lets dad feed baby too, which is important for bonding. Also, get a tube of lanolin to use for chapped nipples- an absolute must! Use a backpack for a diaper bag. Cloth diapers are the best burp clothes because they are absorbent and big. Umbrella strollers are easiest to manipulate into and out of cars, buses, airports. A baby carrier (like a bjorn) was an awesome thing and i would consider a must. I used cloth diapers with my sons- i did the math and it saved us $0.40 per diaper change but you have to be willing to do the laundry. However, after 2 babies, it amounted to hundreds of dollars saved so it was well worth it. Never had a blowout with a cloth diaper either. My sons also did not have the diaper rash problem when wearing cloth. When a sitter put them in disposable, their poor little bums would be so raw! Almost all the clothes I got for my sons were purchased second hand. They outgrow clothes so fast second hand clothes are usually in good condition. One last suggestion, i had my husband install a dimmer light switch in the nursery. That way i could have light to see for midnight changes but it would be low level enough that it wouldnt wake the baby completely. As far as toys go… cardboard boxes, tupperware containers and a wooden spoon, and an infantsafe teddybear.

I had 6 dozen cloth diapers & 6 rubber pants, full set of glass bottles, 4 gowns, 4 footed sleepers, 4 half shirts, baby crib, 6 baby blankets and that was all. We didn't have car seats then but very safe and good thing. My parents bought each child a going home from hospital outfit, which I still have. Beautifully wise video, Jessica! My best tip for baby carers: aqueous cream mixed with a nut or vegetable oil of your choice (avocado, olive or macadamia are lovely) worked wonders to soothe and heal my hands which were cracked and dry from always being washed, immersed in laundry tubs or sterilising solution. I would mix about a quarter of a cup of oil into a 500gm tub of cream. The cream is available at pharmacies for about $10AU and lasts a while so a very affordable option.
Second favourite tip: whenever possible/practical let baby have floor time naked in the morning sun. This helps SO much with any rash or skin irritation they may have and gives them a wonderful boost of vitamin d.

It’s fascinating how we have streamlined our baby items after having multiples. There are just a few staples that we find work time and time again. On my list was a swing(my babies all napped so well in swings I even had one out in the barn 😂) and a nursing pillow. I didn’t even think about making sure I had bottles and a pump.

This was very interesting - I had no idea that there were things like swings that hooked up to your phone! My only child will be 40yo in January. Yes, things have changed. My oldest will be 39 in the spring. We had a car seat, his daddy made a crib, a stroller, glass bottles that were hand-me-downs and a sterilizer for the stove top, cloth prefold diapers with pins (and the cleanest diapers were burp cloths!), lots of clothes because grandmas went wild! We tried different things for the winter--it was really hard to find something that would fit in the seat. The last child had a baby bag with a "slot" to put the car seat latch through. He was covered at all times. I had a Snugli sack to strap to me, but it was hard to deal with by myself. I thought your ideas were spot on!

Fascinating video. I was born in the 50’s and watched my mom (and helped) care for my younger brothers. This was a trip down memory lane to those times! Haven’t heard “rubber pants” in so long!😄 Of course, things were modernized in the 80’s when I became a mom-but still seem old fashioned now! I agree w/ you-simple is often best. I loved those glass bottles, and the glass bottles in which our milk was delivered. They were sturdy!!! Thx for your thoughts on baby care. Wishing you a safe and happy delivery. 😘

You had me remember the items my mom used with my sister and I. She used cloth diapers and had a chamber pot to soak them in after rinsing them first. We also had one if those wringer washers . When we were babies we never had car seats, but mom used a bassinet on the floor if the car, and later had a over the seat car seat, which I used for my dolls much later. My mom also had this table that was also a feeding chair. Multi purpose table.
When I had my son I did purchase at least one or two nice outfits for him. But my son wore onsies, though he was full term when born, he wore 3-6 month sizes till he was over 6 months. So I didn't need to purchase larger sizes till much later. I did nurse him for the first 3 months, pumping when I needed, when I went back to work I was able to pump and store the milk at work in a fridge. I did have to use formula as pumping became harder at work. However when home I still nursed him till he was 1 1/2 years old. I was greatful to go thst far. I was not able to find prefolded cloth diapers when he was born, so used disposable. Glass bottles were not as available for me then, however I never needed to warm the water fir formula as I used spring water room temp. He did great with that. Plus it was easier to transport when going out.
What I ended doing when we went out, was use the formula can sample from the hospital. Which held over 10 servings, and I refilled for daily trips, used one bottle and a litter water bottle in a small diaper bag. Which was my to go bag daily. Which I also had 2 spare sets of clothes and about 10 diapers. Yup blow outs happened where ever. I never wanted to be somewhere and not be prepared.
We had a car seat that was infant to 5 years and a carriage when he used till he was 3 or 4. We had other items given to us for him like a feeding seat, high chair and a walker. So they got a new life with my son. But after a year I realized he grew out of some things, before he ever used . At least I could pass them on to other folks. Minimize is best.

I live in Europe, Romania. From what I know about infant safety a bucket seat is waaaay safer than an a car seat (even if it says it is safe from birth), the position of the body is unsafe. At least for the first year of life. And also setting the bucket/carseat rear-faceing until they are 2 years old.

I think it depends on the seat and the size of your baby. Also, if you read the manuals for convertible seats there is an angle you need to maintain in order for it to be safe for a tiny baby. Always read the manuals!

I didn’t realize they were making glass baby bottles again until my grandson was born this summer. I love how glass has made a comeback. My children were born during the time of the disposable plastic bags that fit inside plastic bottle holders. I tried to nurse all of them but struggled with the first one because I worked full time and only had a small battery operated breast pump. It barely worked. With baby 3 and 4, I asked a friend who had an old medela pump if I could use it. It was huge and heavy. The new discreet hands free pumps are amazing. Something else I became aware of this summer. Blessings on the coming baby!

You are so right about not needing half the tongs out there for babies. I have to say for my first o didn’t buy one bottle or a breast pump. It was 34 years ago and breastfeeding was not the norm in Ireland at the time. I didn’t buy the bottles because I was determined to breastfeed only. I didn’t have to buy a bottle until she was about 8 months so I just got a sippy cup at that stage. You can use a glass to feed a baby if needed.. I used cloth nappies but with a woolen cover I lived using them. Best of luck woth baby number 9. My daughter is due her second baby at the same time as you. So I’ll be thinking of you.

If you want to invest in a good bouncy seat get the baby Bjorn bouncer
Yes it’s 200 dollars but it’s a basic bouncy seat that is so smooth that you can rock baby with your foot. I love it so much! I used it for two babies and it’s still going strong and soon it will be used with our third.
I tried the cheap ones and the baby bjorn is worth it mamas. Plus to folds flat for easy storage.
For crib I use a 4moms breeze plus bassinet play yard. It’s a play yard and crib when baby gets bigger and a bassinet when you have new born and it has a changing table and you can purchase a caddy for supplies like diapers that attaches to it. It’s 300 but so worth the price is you have a small space. We are a family of 5 in a studio apartment so we need every time to be easy to put away when not in use and this 4moms breeze and babybjorn bouncer both collapse easily for storage.

Loved this video. My experience has taught me baby wipes are not a must. I did keep a small pack in my diaper bag for my 4 littles. Home, I used a cloth damp with warm water, then dried with another one. If little had a rash, witch hazel worked wonders. Also, if weather allows it. Letting the little one run around outside with no diaper on, granted it has to be a sunny warm day, helped with rash.

I had them on the kitchen table in the bouncy seat with the vibration mode on. Whatever reason I took him out of the seat. The vibration mode stayed on and the bouncy seat vibrated right off of the table onto the kitchen floor. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up if you put them on a surface, I wouldn’t put on the vibration mode.
