We don’t like canned carrots either, so I subbed sweet potatoes we canned for the soufflé. So good! Thanks for the recipe, it’s definitely going into our regular rotation
Wild rice combines with white rice really well. Less wild rice to more white rice. Then it can be very tasty. You do an amazing job with your meal preps! I only use wild rice in a rice blend. The wild rice is a very small part of the blend. (Your chickens would probably like to eat your wild rice.).
If you soak your Pyrex glass utility pan in really hot water that has about 3/4 cup of baking soda dissolved in it then use an SOS pad to get that baked on residue off so the glass will be all clean again. Nancy in east Texas, long time vintage Pyrex collector
One of my favorite childhood memories is coming back home from playing in the snow, getting into some fresh dry and warm socks, and drinking hot cocoa. So this scene at the beginning really pulled at my heartstrings
I found my children were more likely to eat the wild rice if it was mixed with white rice. I would then top it with meals that had a lot of texture. They enjoyed the rice they loved and didn't notice the wild rice. I also ground the wild rice and mixed it with my flour to make muffins. They got the goodness without me having to fight them to eat the rice.
I do the same thing in adding a little wild rice to our white rice. About a 1 to 6 ratio. There is also a wild rice blend I buy to do this with. Makes your rice look a little fancier. 😉
Just learned this year that I love cranberry sauce and it's really great on wild rice!! You can also mix wild rice into a porridge of some sort with nuts!
Another great video. I just laughed out loud when Hannah was reaching for Benji's carrot souffle. Your little helper is looking like David. Hannah is just beautiful. Have a warm week. Happy birthday, sweet lady.
Yes, Hannah was so cute reaching for a taste of carrot soufflé off her brothers plate. Your videos are packed with your love for your family and the knowledge you are sharing for them to carry as adults for generations to come. May you have 43 more birthdays to celebrate with your children and husband. Happy Birthday 🎂
@threerivershomestead I love your videos thank you so much for sharing I have and am learning so much. I was wondering what kind of wheat berries you used when you made fresh flours in your video? Thank you and God bless you and your family 💗🤗
I enjoy watching you cook. It reminds me of growing up with my mom and my grandma. What a blessing. Thank you for all you do.❤️✝️🕊🙏🏼💖💖💖 stay safe, you are loved, and you are enough.
I see this video has been up 2 hours and already has 1k likes. Others, like myself, must just wait for your Sunday morning video. My husband sleeps later than me so I get my first cup of coffee and sit down to enjoy your videos. Makes for a welcome Sunday morning treat. Thank you!
OMGosh. So needed, these meal Ideas. It seems that many, MANY channels are doing your Pantry Challenge AND so many individuals. This really helps with our self-discipline and organization too. THANK YOU!
Just love all your babies. Thank you for sharing them with us. We have a routine after lunch. Grandma says “what time is it boys?”. My 2 & 4 year old grands reply “Rest time,Amen!!” This has been an after lunch routine since my kids were littles. Happy birthday Jessica!
Wild rice chicken soup might be an easier way to get the little ones to enjoy the wild rice. Since it’s less concentrated in the soup it’s not such a big mouthful of the rice which can be bitter. Enjoying the challenge as always!!❤
That was my thought as well. I add it too many soups and some stews. I found that pre soaked wild rice helps with the bitterness too. I also pre cook it for many dishes. For example, a mix of cooked wild rice, nuts, seeds, veggies, dried fruits, with lots of herbs and seasonings. This is great a versatile mix I’ve used for stuffing birds (I know, controversial). I like to add sausage to it for stuffing into winter squashes or other vegetables. And that’s easy enough to turn into a delicious vegetarian or vegan option for some of my family members as well. 😊
It makes my heart happy to see your children cooking with you from an early age. Not only does it make cooking more enjoyable, it’s teaching them how to cook which is a precious gift to them. They also benefit greatly from the confidence and self-esteem boost helping you in the kitchen gives them. Children naturally strive to be helpful (well, most days-some days they are the complete opposite 😊) and their faces light up when they can help and they’ll be proud of themselves all day long.
For wild rice..I make a mixture of brown, wild, red, and black rice. Then, use any kind of broth and seasonings to cook the rice until tender. I use the timing for brown rice, and it turns out great!
I love the real life cooking, using up the leftovers. We look in the fridge and create from what is there before breaking into something new. Also Jessica, for the steak fajitas , if you put a half a teaspoon of baking soda into the marinade for a half hour before you cook any meat, you will have the most tender meat ever, works with all meat. I learned this from an Asian cooking show. You will be amazed how tender the meat is and it does not have the awful baking soda taste. Love watching you in your element.
Omg the Longaberger recipe card got me in all the feels 🥺 I grew up in northwest Ohio and this was what my grandmother used of course. Thank you for unlocking that core memory 🫶
Happy birthday! Lovely roses.🌹 My grandmother lived with us and taught me how to cook. She always cracked the eggs into a coffee cup to smell before using; also to make it easier to dig out any shells. 😇 In all those years we never had a spoiled egg; she said “don’t worry, you’ll know if it isn’t good!”
Thank you for being so inspiring! Not only with your own channel, but with the pantry challenge your reaching other people thru the other creative videos you have inspired to share their ideas and stories. 😊
Feliz Cumpleaños! We love wild rice. A good way to incorporate it is to add half a cup to your soups! Let it boil and it gets very soft. It’s delicious !
There's a Brazilian style carrot cake that can be made with cooked carrots. You might want to see if you can adapt for your gluten-free needs so you can have another option for them!
We're not huge fans of wild rice but were gifted a large amount. I mix it half and half with white rice to make it go down easier. Thanks for sharing with us!
🎉Happy Birthday Jessica. I only had 3 1/2 hours of sleep, but after a real struggle to learn to get UP @ 6:45 and improving health, I was wide awake and ready to see what you were up to for the week. I'm inspired to use up carrots that are okay but not great for a Wacky Carrot Cake and Carrot Spice Waffles, both egg free. I love this challenge.
Happy Birthday, Jessica! This was a week of wonderful recipes. Thank you, once again, for all the work you put into bringing us these videos. The written recipes help too! I love seeing your beautiful kids growing up (when I look at older videos, It's like they're growing right before my eyes, ha ha). Have a good week.
I always enjoy your videos, Jessica! These days all I can think about are the starving and displaced children in Gaza, so it makes me so happy to see your children drinking hot cocoa in the warmth of your home :)
We use our wild rice combined with some brown rice to make a delicious cream of wild rice soup. We use plain almond milk to make the soup creamy. ❤. Thank you for your wonderful videos! 🥰
Happy Birthday Jessica!! We're having a "cold snap "here in Alberta just now. Temps at -40 C which is the same as -40 F and I made split pea and ham soup. I really like adding 2 bay leaves and 1 tsp thyme.
Thank you for showing your real, beautiful life & how you involve your kids. So much better, more nourishing, authentic, and God- honoring than 99.9% of UA-cam.
Wow did that bring back memories. My Mom always made hot cocoa on the stovetop using cocoa powder, sugar, and milk. My siblings and all the neighborhood kids would come in freezing cold from playing in the snow. We would load our boots, gloves , hats and scarves at the heat vents and drink rich hot cocoa. I’m 56 and that was so long ago. What a nice memory!
Good morning! Another great video, as always. About the wild rice, we do not enjoy eating it in plain, but.....I learned to mix about a fourth cup of wild rice to white, saffron or other rices and it really makes it so much better. I also put about a fourth of a cup in chili or various soups, stuffing, savory muffins, cornbread (already cooked), salads and whateverelse I can think of. Wild rice is a bit pricey if you buy a lot of it at once, so I try not to waste any of it. I can buy a big bag and it will last a long time because I use a small amount in whatever I'm making. It also helps young ones get used to the taste and texture of it by eating small amounts of it mixed into other things. I can honestly say that we have learned to love it when added to other foods. You may have already thought about these things already, but wanted to share just in case. I hope this helps. Blessings to all of you! 💙💙💙
Good morning! Been doing the challenge, just not great at filming, lol. You help me start off my week on such a positive note. Have a blessed week my sweet friend!❤😊
Just wanted to say that your Sunday videos are one of the highlights of my week. I sometimes get a little down on Sundays but seeing you and your family always cheers me up. I am a 67 year old grandmother so I enjoy living vicariously in a large family through you! I follow you, Hollar homestead, and Simple living Alaska every week.
Lovely inspiring meals! Thank you, Jessica, for putting this challenge together. This is my second year doing the challenge and I have found such joy in cleaning out and using up food that I've preserved. There is just the two of us and sometimes paring down recipes so we don't have a week of leftovers is a challenge. I mostly cook from the heart and don't use a lot of recipes. At 80 I feel I've banked enough recipes that I can put something together and make it work. I use a lot of broth as a base but I love freeze-drying my broth. It is so much more convenient for me. The jars of broth are heavy and I've learned that I can freeze dry and make it easier to lift and use. Each tray hold a quart of broth and two trays of broth fit into a quart. Thanks again! Mary Born, ND
I always make a grain mixture and everyone really likes it as it has some bite and never sticks together. I do a quarter cup each of basmati rice, wild rice, quinoa and pearl barley. This will feed two to three adults so scale depending how many folks turn up!
It’s nice to see another video. We had to cancel the pantry challenge this year. Just before Christmas I had a mini stroke, and the doctors also found an infection in my blood. I am home now and getting the rest of my treatments here, but I have no energy. So, we are buying convenience items like for example bread. We are eating a lot of what we have preserved, but having to split my chores between themselves my family are making easy meals and often it’s just sandwiches, soups and other quick easy meals.
You are a wealth of cooking knowledge. You need to write a cookbook of your favorite recipes that are dairy, gluten free. I love Amy Maryons family favorites too. Thank you for filming so much for us. And, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! God Bless all of you! Love from Tennessee❤
Happy 43th birthday ! I wish you and your beautiful family a blessed year 🎉. My birthday was January 12 and I turned 61😊 I enjoy watching your videos and learn new things every time!
My mom used to make that corn chowder soup growing up and I still make it pretty much the same way you did except I add some cream corn to it also and a splash of milk at the end so yummy! I'm sure you can add splash of non dairy milk to it
Love the Hopes Table cookbook as well! We started our pantry challenge in December to save for Christmas and are now in month two and going strong! Honestly we are going through food faster than I thought but still have plenty of meat for 2-3 months and enough pasta and rice for 6+. Just running low on flour as we bake everything! Family of 6 here and I love watching your inspiring videos!
I love Olive & Mango's Creamy Chicken & Wild Rice Soup. The first time I made it I accidentally left the heavy cream out but because the rice cooks in the soup, it's still super creamy and I didn't miss it. It's really nice if you're feeling under the weather, too.
I make waffles, pancakes and French toast ahead and found I save ziplock bags by substituting store bought bread bags. I first freeze them on sheet pans so there is no need for parchment or waxed paper to separate them. They stack nicely and take up less space. This makes for an almost instant breakfast with pre cooked bacon or sausage pstties. Then can pop the waffles, pancakes or French toast in a toaster in the morning. Of course, we are a much smaller family than yours. We love orange cinnamon French toast or berry or banana waffles or pancakes. More nutrition for the family. I use grated orange peel and the juice to flavor the French toast. Yummy
Happy Birthday Jessica. Loved the video. I get such a kick outta watching Hannah with her facial expressions. Lol💜. The kiddos are growing up so fast. God bless and stay warm and safe. 🙏🏻💜
SO MUCH information - so valuable I need to watch several times. You certainly have a way to cut to the chase and provide tidbits of data I love to learn from you! Happy Birthday! I'm so glad you were born - selfish of me, I know, but you are a blessing!
Good afternoon my dear friend, a big Happy Birthday to you!! Looks like you all had a great break, just watched last weeks video last night, loving the fact that you are putting your recipes in the description box now, thanks for that! I have made some of your muffin recipes and they all turned out delicious! Here in South Eastern Wisconsin the Temp is 2 below, feels like 15 below ( Burr) . Enjoy your Sunday and looking forward to next week video!!
GREAt GIRL! Only minus 12 F here tonight here near St. Cloud, Minnesota, USA, tonight. No wind. Our outdoor garage kitties (2) are happy in house on couch tonight!
Wild rice burgers. No clue if you read comments on your old posts, but there are some great recipes around that incorporate wild rice with some binding agents that you can serve on a bun or just as is with some sauce or condiment. Your corn salsa maybe? You can season it any way you want. Do a taco or chili type, or an Asian inspired one, or mild yellow curry. Can add grated veg into them like carrots and zucchini and celery (anything, really) and just do herbs and some tasty fats like bacon or pork drippings. Patty them up and freeze for later use for busy nights. I like them especially well done when the outside gets a little crisp.
I enjoy your cooking videos. It really helps me to get ideas. I'm not much of a cook, so it really helps me be adventurous. We love trying new things. Thank you for sharing your life with us. God Bless you and your family.
Wild rice has a very strong flavor. A trick that was passed down from my Grandma to my mom and then to me: take the amount of wild rice you want, rinse in a strainer really well. Put the rice into a pot and pour boiling water over it, cover it and let sit for 30-45 minutes. Then pour back into strainer, rinse and repeat this 3-5 times. The rice will partially cook and the flavor won’t be so “wild” strong. Sometimes I do extra and it freezes really well. Thank you for all your wonderful ideas ❤
Happy Birthday Jessica 🎉 I cook up a big batch of wild rice, dehydrate it & when I need to add a starch to a soup , I just throw it in. Better than throwing raw rice in soup because it takes away from the broth flavor. Another way to use wild rice is adding the cooked rice to hamburgers. Adds bulk & calories.
That’s our son Bill’s 54th bday! Your commitment to your family’s nutrition and hearty meals is very admirable and such a beautiful example of a Godly wife and mother. Thanks for sharing. Susan
Great tips! I have found even kids ages 5 and up can help play with baby or toddler for 10 to 15 min increments while mom helps another student with work and then we switch to different student helps with baby.
Being from Minnesota, wild rice is very common and loved. It’s actually a native grass. We recently moved to Missouri and it’s difficult to find. I use it to make a casserole or soup. I also add some white rice because wild rice is expensive. If cooked right, it offers a lovely nutty flavor with a slightly chewy texture. Yum! Now I want to make some chicken & wild rice soup. 😊
We don’t like canned carrots either, so I subbed sweet potatoes we canned for the soufflé. So good! Thanks for the recipe, it’s definitely going into our regular rotation
You are so welcome!
I am gaining a lot by watching you and pantry challenge ideas! Found some stew beef in our freezer from last January and have it is the crockpot!
I love it when Hannah tries to steal some of Benjamin’s soufflé, the look on her face when he pushes her hand away is priceless! Busted!! 🤣♥️
Wild rice combines with white rice really well. Less wild rice to more white rice. Then it can be very tasty. You do an amazing job with your meal preps! I only use wild rice in a rice blend. The wild rice is a very small part of the blend. (Your chickens would probably like to eat your wild rice.).
Yes this is what I do too! I try to give the wild rice a head start cooking , then add in the white rice.
Agreed. Three cups white to one cup wild to introduce the flavours. Then slowly raise the wild rice ratio to a comfortable level for your family.
This is how we eat wild rice in my house too. My girls thought the 'black' rice was a fun addition to plain rice.
I was going to suggest this too but I'll just wish you a very Happy Birthday instead ❤🎉
Yes, That same way I use. Mix with different types of rice, never alone. Love it with brown rice cooked with a cream of mushroom .

Cranberry sauce is yummy and so easy to make from scratch
I love how you use everything. No waste!!
Another great video. I just laughed out loud when Hannah was reaching for Benji's carrot souffle. Your little helper is looking like David. Hannah is just beautiful. Have a warm week. Happy birthday, sweet lady.

Happy birthday Jessica! Thank you for sharing your meals - the pea soup looks divine ❤
Wild rice chicken soup might be an easier way to get the little ones to enjoy the wild rice. Since it’s less concentrated in the soup it’s not such a big mouthful of the rice which can be bitter. Enjoying the challenge as always!!❤
Also be sure you rinse it really well, it gets the dusty bitter flavor off somewhat.

Oh my the littles eating that chicken soup were so cute! Thank you for the pantry meal ideas.

Happy Belated Birthday! You are truly a Proverbs 31 woman, your family is well loved and cared for by you.
Happy birthday, sweet wife, and mom!!
Love the divided plates you served breakfast in.
I enjoy your cooking videos. It really helps me to get ideas. I'm not much of a cook, so it really helps me be adventurous. We love trying new things. Thank you for sharing your life with us. God Bless you and your family.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! What a blessing you are to everyone :)
Happy Birthday Jessica!!🎉 I love spending my sunday's with you and your family,..God bless you all...stay healthy and safe 🙏❤️🙏❤️
Happy birthday Jessica!! Your flowers are as beautiful as you are. 💗
Thank you so much!
Happy Birthday Jessica. Another great videos filled with new ideas.
Happy Birthday 🎉❤
You are blessed beyond measure! ✝️
Happy Birthday Jessica 🎉
I cook up a big batch of wild rice, dehydrate it & when I need to add a starch to a soup , I just throw it in. Better than throwing raw rice in soup because it takes away from the broth flavor.
Another way to use wild rice is adding the cooked rice to hamburgers. Adds bulk & calories.
I love wild rice in my pancakes! I cook it the day before and then add it to the pancake batter!
That’s our son Bill’s 54th bday! Your commitment to your family’s nutrition and hearty meals is very admirable and such a beautiful example of a Godly wife and mother. Thanks for sharing. Susan
Happy Birthday, Jessica! 🎈
Great tips! I have found even kids ages 5 and up can help play with baby or toddler for 10 to 15 min increments while mom helps another student with work and then we switch to different student helps with baby.
You inspire me to waste less. Thx
Belated happy Jessica! God bless you and your family, always. ❤❤❤
