- I think one of the best restaurants in Chiang Rai is Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา). You can read all the details about it here: www.eatingthaif...
I really love Chiang Rai as a city - it’s peaceful, usually has fresh air, the lifestyle is calm, relaxing and friendly, and most of all, there’s a good selection of food to eat. Ranging from northern Thai food to delicious Thai Chinese food, you’ll find plenty to devour when you’re in Chiang Rai. One of my absolute favorite restaurants in the city is Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา), a restaurant located on the peaceful side of the city, near the Chiang Rai stadium and a school.
Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา) serves mostly a menu of northern Thai dishes, and they have a bunch of specials on their menu as well. I didn’t see an English menu, but the menu did have pictures to make it easier for you to order if you don’t speak Thai. The restaurant is sort of like an oversized open air shack, one of the types of restaurants that looked like it started off small and just kept growing and expanding in size little by little, until turning into the pretty large restaurant that it is today. But it’s exactly my style of a restaurants - no frills, open air, makeshift tables, and just amazing food.
Ying and I first started off with a Thai dish known as Yang Ruam (ย่างรวม), which was basically just a mixed grill plate. It included grilled pork, and some grilled pork organs like intestines and liver. The meat was grilled until almost halfway to a jerky style meat - so it had a bit of chewy texture, and it was slightly dried out - which is the way it was supposed to be. Dipped into the house-made chili sauce, it was pretty tasty. I especially liked the intestines, which were like little nuggets of sausage. The next dish we ordered was Jeen Neung (จิ้นนึ่ง), a plate of beef steamed with lemongrass and galangal, and served on a plate with fresh sprigs of cilantro and a side dipping sauce of galangal chilli sauce, known in Thai as nam prik kha (น้ำพริกข่า). The combination was masterful, the meat was slightly chewy, but along with the galangal chilli sauce and the fresh herbs, it was sensational. It honestly almost tasted like a Sunday roast, only with more flavor from the chili and herbs. The Jeen Neung (จิ้นนึ่ง) was one of the highlights of my meal at Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา) restaurant.
For another impressive dish we ordered the pla tabtim tod kratiem (ปลาทับทิมทอดกระเทียม), a fish deep fried, and topped with the most amazing pile of fried garlic that I’ve ever seen in my life. It was almost comical how much garlic they loaded on top of it. I did notice that the garlic was slightly battered before it was deep fried, so that did increase the size a bit, but nevertheless, it was a jaw-dropping mound of garlic. The fish was fried to an absolute crisp, and the sauce served was spicy and garlicky. The combination of the crunchy fried fish with the garlic and chili sauce was incredibly delicious. Our final dish, which we ordered just to wrap everything up and call it a complete northern Thai meal, was tom sab moo (ต้มแซ่บหมู), a soup of pork and herbs. It was a little on the greasy side, but wow was it extremely tasty. It was almost perfectly flavored, with chilies, lime juice, tomatoes, and cilantro, and the pork was so tender and so flavorful.
Lab Sanam Keela (ร้านลาบสนามกีฬา) is a wonderful place to eat in Chiang Rai, and I think it’s one of my personal favorite restaurants in the city. The open air, and relaxing atmosphere could not get much better, and the food is wonderful - spicy, sour, pungent, and ultimately delicious. If you visit Chiang Rai, Thailand, and looking for a delicious meal experience that’s heavy on the meat, you should check this place out.

My wife and I went to the restaurant last night, wow, the fish dish, topped with a pile of breaded fried garlic was incredible. Best enjoyed as Mark demonstrated with piece of fish, and a couple of pieces of garlic all dipped in the spicy sauce. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area

This restaurant was a short walk from Le Meridien where I was staying at. Got some great northern Thai food. Wished they had the fried fish with tons of fried garlic. They didn't have any fish when I was there, but the other dishes I had was so good.
I'm going to be in Chiang Mai and was contemplating Chiang rai to visit the white temple...definitely one of my stop if I decide to go. I've been to thailand to visit family but hardly traveled...Which on my upcoming trip I plan to do more of....So I've been coming to your channel to get some ideas of where to go and how to plan my trip. Hi Mark, great video as always! Obviously, since your wife is Thai and you speak Thai yourself if I'm not mistaken, you get a lot of tips from the locals on where the best places are. What would be your advice to get in on where the locals dine where language skills and maybe cultural connections are limited?
Arnór Bogason That's a very good question Arnór. When my wife and I travel to a destination outside of Thailand, where we don't know the language or the culture, but want to find local food, we normally just do start walking around and exploring on foot - I think it's the best way to start looking for food. Pay attention to what's available and especially pay attention to stalls or restaurants that are busy, and look to be serving continuous customers. For ordering, if you don't even know what it is you're about to eat, just sort of motion to the waiter, 1 with you index finger, and you'll mostly likely get the most popular dish / specialty at the restaurant. Finally, just keep smiling. Along with doing this most of the time, I also search on local blogs / and food websites like foursquare and look for places where most of the reviews are in the local language (and of course, have a good rating). Hope this helps, I've thinking of making a full videos about a topic like this.

I wish there are cookings like that here, I was able to eat some Thai dishes in LA quite far from where I lived,it is now history, although there are a few of Thai restos where I am now, I'd say very disappointing,
My birthplace...
Hey Mark your videos inspire me to become a nomad and really encourages me to learn more about Asia and a lot of other beautiful parts of this wonderful planet.
How do you find all these great places??? I'm watching this at 6:40 A.M. (Philippine Time). I ate breakfast and all but I'm still hungry. That fish and garlic combo just looks awesome... I would have it dipped in soysauce with chilis. Aaah... this is why I would never be able to start my diet. haha

Next time if you come to Chiang Rai again you have to go the real local foods กุ้งเต้นหนองปึ๋ง Kung tan nong pueng i'm a big fan of this restaurant thay have a lot of good foods and the price is cheap.
You're right. Jin-Neuang = Steamed beef.
Jin (in northern Thai language) = Beef or buffalo meat
For Ying, จิ๊นครับ ไม้ตรี เหมือนคำว่า "ชิ้น" ในภาษากลางแหละครับ แต่เป็น จ.จาน
The pork dish looks interesting, some pieces have even a smoke ring to it. Looks like it was smoked and then fried..

Mr. Wiens ? Did you get to try a very old traditional style of cooking called " Aahan chao wang" in Thailand? I'd love to see you try one of the oldest cuisine that purely designed for the royal's families back in the days.Thank you !! loved your Vids

You should go to Phuket! Phuket is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand. I have been there several times to visit my dad's side of the family. It is almost like Hawaii here in the U.S. but at a cheaper price :)

That fish looked so tasty...
Eric Gong Thanks Eric
Could it be you love the spices more than the food itself? LOL I can imagine eating a dish without any spice. You probably wouldn't like it. LOL Anyway, that fried fish and garlic sounds interesting which I would like to try myself.
ME-Tube Your Space! This is something I've really thought about as well - I really do love spices, and pungent ingredients - so food that included strong flavors are usually what I love best. But then again, I also do appreciate freshness - such as many Japanese dishes don't include a lot of spice of pungency, but they are so fresh and so pure.
+Mark Wiens hi I love your videos
First time viewer. Great review. Man you can eat. Cant wait to try that place. I have a lady in Rai.
that looks amazing!
Thank you BudiProject
Surprise you didn't order "larb" since the restaurant name with the word larb. I can not wait to visit Chiang Rai as always the foods looked amazing!
Salalao The only reason I didn't order it was because I had had it the meal before this and made a video as well, so I was just trying to order some other unique dishes here. But next time I'm going to try their lab for sure.
you shoud hv try lab moo(pork salad?) i think you wife probably know wht i mean , and lab woa (beef) they also good! (they hv both raw and well-done choice, but i personally not eat raw) bc lab is the menu that resemble this restaurant (as they named "lab (menu) sanamgeela (the address)") btw i fall in love with all your videos and this make me hungry and want to go back home now ! (i study aboard) this is one of my favorite restaurant too. welcome to CEI , from chiang rai girl.
