@@christopherlehman4045 The difference from the 362 to 400C is about the same as between the 400C and the 462. Likewise going 261 to 362 is about the same. You could play the "its only half a pound" game all day long and eventually you are running a 500i to cut a sapling. All about finding the sweet spot for you on weight, power, and cost. 400.1 is slated to be lighter than the 362 and more powerful. A no brainer for me. If you are coming from the 400C it will be much lighter, but less powerful. I get why people may not like that. But, I always ask 400C owners why they aren't just running a 462 or 500i.
I’ve had all of saws listed in you comment and I’m pretty sure it’s less than half a pound between the 400 and 362. Guess I’ll need to put them on a scale and see, they share all their parts minus piston and cylinder. The mag piston is lighter than the aluminum 362 piston and the cylinder is roughly the same size even though the case and cylinder are changed some so a 400 won’t bolt to the 362. Not seeing where they could have gained weight on a 400 vs 362. I have saws for every size cutting and use my ported ms 400 all the time.
The AV mount under the clutch is no upgrade by no means. It is a limiter and it has no meat to support. Ive seen MANY MS462 being hit there and breaking the magnesium crankcase there, so then the saw has no limiter and feels so loose. In this case it's pretty much the same. The previous MS400 has an MS361 style AV travel limiter in a very much sturdier crankcase, not prone to breaking.
hi, i'm from Germany and i must admit that the 361 has been being not available in Germany for like 10 years. So I think it is not produced in Germany any more. (Or do you still have a "Made in Germany" Sticker on the oil tank housing). It was definetly produced in Germany in the 2000s and beginnings of 2010s but I think it would be much too expensive only to sell it in other countries and produce it in one of the most expensive locations in the world - Germany
I didnt realise there was so much love for the 400! For sure this is a downgrade, but something had to go, the stihl lineup has been congested for a while now. I had heard rhe 462 was being discontinued as its too close to the 500.. but not seen anything official on that Thanks for rhe detailed video MN!
Thankyou for watching our video. On paper the new saw should be better than the original. It has less weight, best power ratio, more torque, and pretty much same power. Until the saws are put head to head in tests we wont know. Bring on the next video!
From tests its meant to perform more like a fuel injected saw. Will be interesting to see how it performs and what end users think of it when they are finally released
@MachineryNation the 400CM will smoke it. That magnesium piston allows for faster piston speed and more compression, especially after porting/muffler modding. My modded 400 pulls in around 8 HP and outperforms my 592 XP and a stock 661. Its the perfect saw.
Initial thoughts: wow, Stihl is building components just like Husqvarna. I mean look at the new carb and the muffler🤷🏻♂️. Regardless, it’s a great looking saw, but the original 400 is iconic! Stihl!!! Bad move for discontinuing the original 400.
I just bought the original version brand new had it ported put the WSC muffler and air filter kit on it and have ordered the HO 460 oil pump to keep up with a bar longer than 24”! Haven’t got it back yet but it will be in wood in a week! Also the muffler part that bolts to the cylinder is modified as well! I don’t run stock saws much anymore porting is the way they should run from the factory! 😎
I never say this but I genuinely believe you should take this video down as there’s several things you say that are blatant misinformation and it’s clear you are not knowledgeable about the actual changes and reasons behind them. Such as the “magnesium block” it’s a cylinder, the block refers to the piston, cylinder, crank, and cases as a whole unit, along with the fact that it’s an aluminum cylinder like all other chainsaws. The special tool is the same tool to adjust the carb. The new air filter is a 462 filter with notoriously bad filtration. And the muffler is for emissions, lower temps are just a byproduct of it and I don’t believe that.
The old 400 carbs top butterfly is only for the fresh air control going to the stratto ports. New one probably has a splitter behind carb to run fresh air to the stratto ports.
Looks like the new 400 is a pretty good saw. Need to get my hands on one of these to see if it is worth it. I got plenty of Stihl saws and Husqvarna too. So lets See what it can do.
I agree. we cant really tell what the saw is going to be like until its used in real life situation. On paper it should be better than the original and have more raw power in thick timber. We cant wait to take it logging. Might even be today 🪵🪵
I get the feeling you don't know much about the old 400, or any chainsaw for that matter!?! That "oil cover" you mentioned is not a cover, but a little flat screwdriver will adjust the oiler accessed through a gap. The thing you call magnesium is actually the cylinder and is made out of aluminum, the magnesium part is the piston that moves inside. The 'balance' thing you mentioned has more to do with the length of the bar. The old 400 comes with a light bar! The list goes on. Who are you,... and why do you have a channel talking about chainsaws?
The new Ms 400 appears to be of poorer quality than the old one. The switch from magnesium pistons to aluminum pistons was also done to save costs. Furthermore, the holes in the side cover are larger, which means more chips can be sucked in!
Not sure why it would, they went to the 10mm plug awhile back but up to that point pretty much all stihls and most other saws used a bpmr7a or equivalent for like 50 years. You said you used to be a dealer how long was that?
It whether putting the injection system on a smaller saw would bring the price so close to that of the 500i that everyone purchased the larger saw. Its abit like the 241 and 261. When we had a dealership there was so little price difference everyone went for the bigger 261. Might be wrong just our thoughts 👍🏼 thanks for watching
saws crankcase is very anaemic looking around the clutch/vibration mount.... can see that breaking easy. And the exhaust looks very dolmar-ish, with the pipe sticking back into the cylinder 🤔.
Looks to have a 462 air filter and the washer on clutch is off 462 and 500i and starter cover looks similar to a 500i as well and the exhaust looks like a dolmar design with that bit going into the cylinder
I expected a bit more, not less, from a new MS400. Do you know the UK price? I think this will be a huge deciding factor in the 60cc class of saw. Looking forward to seeing it cut.
It has less weight, best power to weight ratio, more torque, and pretty much same power to weight ratio as the original 400. The biggest note to make will be how it performs in larger timber. When the orignal 400 may have struggled STIHL are saying this new model will give you more grunt. We will get out and do some proper testing asap
@@MachineryNation Look forward to that I run a 462 for big stuff, but I like the idea of a lighter 60cc class saw. If it's anything like the list price of the current 400 I can't see many people buying it. Even with discount it needs to be below 1K. look forward to seeing cut.
The 400 is a top end saws but could definitely use a little extra torque. Can't wait to get one of theses and check out that exhaust port it might have potential 😂
Pretty sure the new version will be great, predominantly use Stihl hedgecutters, and they are indestructible! Don't use chainsaws that much, but couldn't be happier with my Husqvarna 455 Rancher! Can't go wrong with either Stihl or Husqvarna, top notch in my opinion!
Best be getting these before they are discontinued. Run one alot takes alot to get them broken in. Got rid of the two best firewood saws for a pos junk pile saw ,The new saw looks like a steatming turd!
The 400 would be one of their newers saws in the line up. I think the 500i and 881 are the newest but correct us if we are wrong 👍🏼 Not sure on pricing yet but interested to find that out
The 400 oe was a new old saw kinda being a large portion of the chassis parts being the same as the 362 that is an old saw. They modified the case and cylinder design to keep people from building a ms 362 super or magnum with the 400 jug and piston. I also think while the mag piston was for quick spool up it was also to save stress on a bottom end designed for 59 cc not almost 67.
The 400 was released back in 2021ish. Sadly the saw has only been in production for around 3 years. It's a great saw. Stihl is probably looking to cut costs in the 60cc range of saws and increase profits. Why? Because you can buy a Husqvarna 562MKII (62cc) saw for about $799. That's much cheaper than the Stihl 400c at $1,000. I think Stihl is shooting themselves in the foot here by removing the 400c from production. They should just keep it for the guys that want them and simply make an improved 362c. But I am sure the almighty dollar is behind their decisions, as always.
I wish Husky made something in-between the 562XP and the 572XP (567XP Mark II) like Stihl has done. Also, the Stihl MS361 was a great saw; the 362 really took a step back.
There are alot of positives to take from this new model. Including more torque, less weight and best power to weight ratio. We will see how it performs in our tests
I’ll be sticking with my trusty Echo 620sx it may be marginally slower/heavier than either the Husky or Stihl saws in its class but it doesn’t need plugging into a computer if/when there’s a problem (there hasn’t been one yet in over 5 years) fair enough not everyone is capable of or wants to use a carb adjustment screw to keep their saws running spot on but as long as Echo keep making non auto tune saws I will continue to buy their products in preference to the others 👍🏼
I’ve heard echo is working on their own auto tune set up but might be a rumor. And as far as you tuning your saw you don’t do a better job than the “computer” as you put it. These auto tune systems don’t fail very often but get the blame for everything. And most times you can diagnose and repair the mtronic saws at home without a computer to hook it up.
@ I never claimed to do a better job than the computer, but I have no time for computer governed chainsaws that have the potential to loose me most of a day taking them to a dealer to be plugged in when a simple carb tweak is all that’s needed, I’ve owned and used auto tune Husky’s and Stihls and in my opinion the Echo is better built and more reliable than either of them but of course you are free to disagree 👍🏼
Point is usually it’s not the electronica that fail but they usually get blamed. An mtronic saw is just a carb saw with a solenoid adjusting fuel mix. 90% of the time they can be fixed without a scanner. Most times on a Stihl if it runs funny do a field recalibration and if that doesn’t work put a new solenoid and fuel filter in and it will probably be fixed. If a reset doesn’t work about 80% of the time it’s a solenoid and they take about 15 min to change and cost 40$. Besides never known anyone who relies on a saw for income to not have a spare because they will all eventually break.
Pretty funny how you think that was why it was done. They don’t care about your muffler cover at all I’m sure it was about area to dissipate heat ect since they need to be made a certain way for emissions standards
@ you’re quite welcome 🤗… THIS is the most informative video on the subject that I’ve seen so far - Do you have any info on the release date in the states? Hearing 2025 across the pond … best regards !
@@fabzacres-blackcat we have been told early 2025 in the UK so i would have thought both the states and europe will have them around the same sort of time
I have an 029 that probably just needs a carburetor, but I bought a MS361 to stay with the 3/8 pitch bar and chain and RS model chain. Wth is Stihl thinking making the "Farm Boss" the MS271, but going away from the 3/8 pitch being an option? They should stick with what works.
Everything about this new model (and the removal of the ms362) smells like a cost savings play for stihl. In good’ol Stihl fashion, they’ve changed as many parts as possible to ensure you buy OEM replacement parts. I’m thinking my old MS362 (non-m-tronic) ported saw is gonna be with me until I run it into the ground. Side note: does the new colour scheme on the clutch cover look more like an after market Amazon cover replacement than OEM? Maybe I need to just get use to it. 😬
They changed the whole saw because it was time they’ll sell you parts for your 362 for many more years. The 400 is based on your 362 which is an old saw design and they just made a new in between saw to cover both spots. And besides lots of aftermarket parts are so hit and miss I won’t use them especially if you need to rely on the saw to work.
Us current 400 owners will just have to wait for the updated 462 in a few years. The new 400 is just an improved 362. The compact and light almost 70cc saw, will be gone...for now. Current 462 is chubby.
What screwdriver does the 400.1 take? "Normal" isn't a measurement if you mean something aside from the Stihl carb screwdriver. "And on the original 400, you've gotta have a special tool, which underneath this cover allows you to adjust it" That ain't an error of omission. That's an error of believing the cover lifts off
To me this actually makes sense. Yeah it is not the same 400, but they couldnt call it a 363 because of the dislike of the 362. And the old 400 is too close in displacement to the 462. Even though it is excellent the old 400 is an odd size. If it makes serious power after mods people will stop crying so much.
Yes you hit the nail on the head. So many improvements and as you say its just making a great saw even better 🤞🏼 Until end users actually get a saw in their hands and use it knowone will know
They could have called it the 363 because that’s what it is basically, the 400.1 is mtronic and the 363 is carbed so far that’s the only difference I’ve heard. Maybe they made the tune on the 363 milder to accommodate some of the bad fuel in other countries to make it hold up better. But they’re the same displacement so I have a feeling it’s a nearly identical saw. Just like the 362/362c one carb one mtronic.
@@eddiehogan9077 just have heard a lot about it being underpowered compared to the 361. 361 had massive potential and the 362 dialed it back quite a bit.
Potential power is the key, stock for stock they both run about the same and that’s how 90% of them are used. Personally in stock form no 60ish cc saw makes me go wow.
current 400 will stay the better saw. why should stihl replace it that early by the new one -> bec its cheaper to produce. think about it. its all about the money folks. giving it a new look similar to the 500i and you have a buch of apes hoppin on it. honestly, i like the design of the new one but more happy to own the OG

4 cc different basically, splits the 362 and current 400 almost in half and replaces both. I’m sure the gain in torq is partially do to a heavier piston with more rotational mass.

There might be more going on behind that we cannot see. Will try and take a look for our next video and see what we can find.
Got a 400. Some say get a 500 etc. But its light an im old. Like it' thanks
Luckily in my country we still have the German made MS361
hi, i'm from Germany and i must admit that the 361 has been being not available in Germany for like 10 years.
What a beast of a saw!
I didnt realise there was so much love for the 400! For sure this is a downgrade, but something had to go, the stihl lineup has been congested for a while now.
I had heard rhe 462 was being discontinued as its too close to the 500.. but not seen anything official on that
Thanks for rhe detailed video MN!
Thankyou for watching our video. On paper the new saw should be better than the original. It has less weight, best power ratio, more torque, and pretty much same power. Until the saws are put head to head in tests we wont know. Bring on the next video!
Looking forward to the race👍🏻
Thanks Lee, so are we. I think it will be interesting to see the difference
Buy a 400 now before stihl ruin it, The demo's for the new 400 just make it sound like an emissions exercise 👍
From tests its meant to perform more like a fuel injected saw. Will be interesting to see how it performs and what end users think of it when they are finally released
@MachineryNation 100% time will tell, the current 400 will certainly take some beating.
Good content as always 🙌

@MachineryNation the 400CM will smoke it. That magnesium piston allows for faster piston speed and more compression, especially after porting/muffler modding. My modded 400 pulls in around 8 HP and outperforms my 592 XP and a stock 661.
Its the perfect saw.
Initial thoughts: wow, Stihl is building components just like Husqvarna. I mean look at the new carb and the muffler🤷🏻♂️.
Regardless, it’s a great looking saw, but the original 400 is iconic! Stihl!!! Bad move for discontinuing the original 400.
Doug!
@ the new 400.1 aka: 562XP in Stihl plastics😆
So the 562 is even father behind now ?
@@christopherlehman4045 the MK2 just came out though.
562xp mk3: Stihl edition
Ms 261 is my favorite, I use it all the time.
Nice saw the 261 💪🏼👍🏼
I just bought the original version brand new had it ported put the WSC muffler and air filter kit on it and have ordered the HO 460 oil pump to keep up with a bar longer than 24”! Haven’t got it back yet but it will be in wood in a week! Also the muffler part that bolts to the cylinder is modified as well! I don’t run stock saws much anymore porting is the way they should run from the factory! 😎
Depends on who ports it, a good ported saw is great but a poor job will cost some money to fix. Not saying the ones your getting aren’t good.
Nice one Josh Thanks again
Thanks Darron. 🙂🙂
i find it funny that over the years Stihl has copied the 5 series husky design more and more.
Love the look of the new 400 and makes it more in keeping with the 462 and 500i 😎
It does look more like a 562 cylinder and exhaust in the new one
Hi Josh, good review on the new Stihl chainsaw, catch you soon take care
Thanks for watching Shaun
Did they up grade the oiler to a bigger on??
Im not sure we can find that out and let you know in the next video
Do u know if the clutch cover from a 462 / 500i will fit?
Looks like the new 400 is a pretty good saw. Need to get my hands on one of these to see if it is worth it. I got plenty of Stihl saws and Husqvarna too. So lets See what it can do.
I agree. we cant really tell what the saw is going to be like until its used in real life situation. On paper it should be better than the original and have more raw power in thick timber. We cant wait to take it logging. Might even be today 🪵🪵
@ Thanks I will watch it. You always do your best, everyone on the Channel.
I would love to try one. Disappointed we don't have any dealers close.
The new Ms 400 appears to be of poorer quality than the old one. The switch from magnesium pistons to aluminum pistons was also done to save costs. Furthermore, the holes in the side cover are larger, which means more chips can be sucked in!
Not quite sure the point of removing the spark plug in order to read the numbers on it.
Just seeing what and if anything has changed from the original saw. 👍🏼
Not sure why it would, they went to the 10mm plug awhile back but up to that point pretty much all stihls and most other saws used a bpmr7a or equivalent for like 50 years. You said you used to be a dealer how long was that?
Pity it’s not fuel injected like the 500i !
@@Dolmar-Rick yep, Or Husqvarna-ish.
@@IndianaDougIt is still a 2 piece muffler ! Which is nice tbf
I dont think the exhuast is a bad thing at all. like the way its got a sleeve into the cylinder. it gives it more support
@ with respect, I disagree. Dolmar owners certainly know why the epa does this🤦🏻♂️
My favorite is the 036pro
I love the echo 6820.
Forget it. Bye bye 400. Maybe in a few years an updated 462 will be worth considering. For now, keeping my old 400 and buying a 572 next year.
Is it too much to ask if Stihl can make a saw that sits flat on a work bench?
FRONT FED TRANSFERS!!!!!! OH YEAH!!!!!
@PurpleNovember i think it is going to be a hot item once warmed over
As a comment below suggests its meant to perform like a FI engine, so will be fun to get out and see how it performs 😎
G'day MN, Running my MS400c is almost enjoyable but only in small wood 👍.
Im keeping my dads 044
@@patrickvennard838 Thanks. We will try and get this filmed as soon as possible!
@@MachineryNation I am quite excited about this new Stihl saw. It could become my everyday 60cc class saw.
Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂
Husky had the 562 xp ii and Echo has the 620. This is a very popular category and Stihl apparently wants to dominate it.
Best be getting these before they are discontinued. Run one alot takes alot to get them broken in. Got rid of the two best firewood saws for a pos junk pile saw ,The new saw looks like a steatming turd!
Didnt they just release the original 400? I guess those mag pistons were expensive to make.
@@christopherlehman4045Sounds like you know engines. What is considered a bottom end on a saw ?
I never liked the 60cc Stihl saws. The Husky 562 MKII always felt better. Perhaps Stihl figured it out with this update.
Huskys are all ass. Wake up, stihl4life
Does anyone know the characteristics of the piston stroke and piston diameter?
I wish I knew somewhere to order one that would ship to the US. Looks like it will be spring of 2025 before they available here
They are yet to be released here either. Early next year possibly 👍🏼
That new exhast is definitely designed so you can’t put a bark box or something similar on to it
Pretty funny how you think that was why it was done. They don’t care about your muffler cover at all I’m sure it was about area to dissipate heat ect since they need to be made a certain way for emissions standards
@ shame you can’t sense the sarcasm in my comment
I have read that the original had more low-end grunt than the new one.
Ported 661 c with wcs bark box dogs handle and clutch cover

I'll do circles around your new WOK saw with my 046.....Shoe
Is like a 462 in the engine cover but is difrent
Got the same styling as the 462 for sure. Will be interesting to see how it performs 👍🏼

"Me and James" is baby talk.

Husky 572 or a pioneer p51
Us current 400 owners will just have to wait for the updated 462 in a few years. The new 400 is just an improved 362. The compact and light almost 70cc saw, will be gone...for now. Current 462 is chubby.
I've got an original and will buy another in the box. The 400.1 will be a downgrade
10:10
Bro what.
Carb adjusting screwdriver needed. Should have mentioned that! Not everyone owns one 👍🏼👍🏼
What screwdriver does the 400.1 take? "Normal" isn't a measurement if you mean something aside from the Stihl carb screwdriver.
"And on the original 400, you've gotta have a special tool, which underneath this cover allows you to adjust it"
That ain't an error of omission. That's an error of believing the cover lifts off
If Stihl had made a smaller lighter version of the 500i i would have been keen but they just made it look like 1 unfortunately.
oh still blocking ads - this is the only one that wont block ads on it = ok well
It should be the MS401. Why does Stihl keep changing the way they name saws????
Why is the 362 disliked?
@@eddiehogan9077 just have heard a lot about it being underpowered compared to the 361. 361 had massive potential and the 362 dialed it back quite a bit.
Potential power is the key, stock for stock they both run about the same and that’s how 90% of them are used. Personally in stock form no 60ish cc saw makes me go wow.
Wow its got orange writing, I gotta have one.
It's got a red trigger that's at least 1hp
0.9 to be exact 😉
I am in hospital tonight
Sorry to hear that! Hope you are on the mend soon!
current 400 will stay the better saw. why should stihl replace it that early by the new one -> bec its cheaper to produce. think about it. its all about the money folks. giving it a new look similar to the 500i and you have a buch of apes hoppin on it. honestly, i like the design of the new one but more happy to own the OG
It's not a machine, it's a saw.
Find the filter good on mine. Yer upgrade but ok.
My favorite Chainsaw is Husqvarna 😂 Because of the filter, the filter system at Stihl is a disaster. Anyone who has ever sawed with Husqvarna and seen how little the filter is dirty knows what I mean.
The new 400 looks better .
There is a reason to use magnesium. Aluminum quality across the world is crappy. Keep gen 1 and buyer beware with gen 2
Just port a 400c and enjoy the torque and chain speed.
If the new one is so good y less cc. From the old one
Only slightly less cc but more torque. So should give the saw more grunt in larger timber
Yer maybe tha angle was lookin at it. They should tho'
Great video when you test it could we mabye have 400vs462 or 400vs500i that would be great
Good idea. We may bring you a series of videos depending on what we can get hold of
Im gonna stay on stihl 500 i
Another stupid decision from Stihl. Smh
Im quietly confident that its going to out perform the orignal. Certainly having more torque is a good thing so should be better under load?
Wow !!! What a shitty move on stihls part. They have really messed up with getting rid of the original. The new one is cool but its just a smaller saw. 😢😢 They should have called it the ... Almost 400😂😂😊
Slightly less cc but more torque. We will put them through some timber and do some speed tests to see how they compare
@MachineryNation I wonder how it's gonna be ported?? Once I started running ported saws it was kinda addictive lol. Who knows tho.. maybe it'll be awesome. Strange it's that much smaller and makes more torque tho
4 cc different basically, splits the 362 and current 400 almost in half and replaces both. I’m sure the gain in torq is partially do to a heavier piston with more rotational mass.
🤮
I am not a fan of the idea for the new one
Stihl is so afraid of weight, they use thin clutch drums and wont offer heated handles? Yep, that's a working man's saw...yawn.
Broken case like on the 500i and flex
The original 400 is actually ass stock
