Totally agree. 60 in the house. I knew Aimee back in Boston. My band Capture the Flag playing lots of shows with Til Tuesday. These days I still play music. Signing a deal. Never give up.
I was young, then one day I wasn't. This song reminds me of how it used to be and how it tried to warn me of what was coming but the gift of ignorance protected me. When this song came out, everyone I loved was still alive and we all had time to burn. I'll miss Record Stores, Video Stores, Music Stores and all the like minded people that I'd meet that I took for granted.
I was going to try and make a comment but I do not comment much and you pretty much wrote what I was thinking. I actually miss them days and I also do not regret the gift of ignorance because it was enjoying life.
That was beautifully said. It reminds me of what a classmate (thanks Stephanie W.) said, when regretfully saying she couldn't come to an 8th grade 30-year reunion (yes, 8th grade): "It is nice to remember when we were pure potential and we didn’t know we were pure potential."
Today Aimee and her band would be superstars...they didn't become one because there was a lot of good music being made back then...if you didn't have a good promoter...you went under...that's exactly what happened with "TIL Tuesday" happened...unfortunately...
Once or twice a year I'll slowly walk down Newbury St toward the public garden late at night and listen to this album. Takes me back to a place and time and to people long gone and feelings lost forever and things left unsaid. It's hard to articulate that warm empty sadness that makes me smile through the tears.
This song is timeless and terribly underrated. The song is beautiful. I bet if it was in a movie soundtrack and rereleased, it would fly up the charts!
How was the song NOT a hit in the 80's??? If I was stranded on an island and could bring 5 songs with me, 4 of them would be THIS song... Beautiful tune.
It was at least a minor hit in like 1985 or 86. It wasn't as big a hit as "Voices Carry" but I do remember loving it at the time and also now of course, 2023.
I hear this song, and I am literally teleported across time and space to my youth, the late 1980s … my heart aches for that time, for lost innocence and innocence lost. I close my eyes, and for a moment, I can feel the breeze blowing gently as I stand outside my old alma mater high school, looking out across an area that was once an open field and has since been given over to an apartment complex... I can hear this on the radio, I can smell the bbq production plant down the road, I can see my old friends and I living in the moment as the end of the school year came and gave way to summer and a time we would look back on dearly even though, in the moment, we had no idea of just what a treasure we had ...
You just spoke for many of us.... This song definitely transports listeners to that place where we were smack dab in the middle of that love conflict. Who hasn' t had at least one of those relationships where you work so hard but it just never comes together. The frustration and the feeling of being close but just missing the mark. And god does it suck when it isn't mutual and one is left nursing a broken heart.
I was so in love with Amee Mann back in that day I could barely stand it. So beautiful, smart, talented and hip. She was my dream girl. I'm 63 now and still dream of her. They don't make 'em like her anymore.
The mid-late 80s is regarded by many as a bad time for music, but this is the side of it that most people don’t remember. Most people remember the hair bands and fluffy dance pop. I choose to remember the intelligent artists, especially the women because they were the most exceptional. People like Aimee, Suzanne Vega, Tracy Chapman, Chrissie Hynde, Liz Fraser/Cocteau Twins, Johnette Napolitano/Concrete Blonde, Harriet Wheeler/The Sundays, Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs, etc. So much talent and they all had something unique to offer. Truly an amazing period for music.
I cranked this song up at the beach this past summer. People young and old were standing around me listening to the song. They all loved it. I had to play it three times. Great music!!!
Aimee Mann was by far the most talented female vocalist in the 80s. Very naturally talented. Blows Madonna, Paula Abdul, and all the others out of the water...masterful range.
May I suggest that AM’s vocals are pretty great, but the *real* magic is with her genius of songwriter crafting and arrangement? I mean there are lots of good vocalists out there, but what she does is far more than singin’ a good song well. She’s likely the control freak between every harmony, harmonic, accent, dynamic, intro, bridge, verse, chorus, lyric etc-and the crafted songs are all teh better for it. Aimee Mann is a *pro* at what she does, as in “PROfessional” or better yet “PROfessor.” And I mean that in a good way. And then she’s not just a Brian Wilson, she gets out and performs them.
I can totally see it, we should write the screenplay! Have you seen 500 Days of Summer? I probably would have never seen it but I did a tag along thing in support of a friend. Anyways, your comment made me think of it but I'm sure we can outdo it. Mostly kidding but I'm down if you are.

1983 - I had a small crush on this cute punk girl with spiky bleached hair a purple braid who worked at Newbury Comics. Saw her weekly when I went in to pick up comics or look for new XTC imports. Imagine my surprise to see her step out on stage at the Metro at the BCN R&R Rumble. The power of her voice was just stunning. I'd gone to see my friend's band (The Phantoms, from Allston) but wasn't the least bit surprised when 'Til Tuesday won that night. I've always had a fondness for Aimee...

I saw Til Tuesday live in the summer of 1986 opening for The Moody Blues in upper Detroit...Aimee Mann blew me away then as I'd already heard "Voices Carry" and liked it. When she introduced her "new" song "Coming Up Close," I had to quiet down the people around me so that I could listen intently. Needless to say, I immediately went out the next day and bought their album "Welcome Home" and listened to "Coming Up Close" for weeks afterward. I am 47 year old man.I have listened to more songs in one year, than most people do in a lifetime.I have helped produce high quality music in the industry, and have been a link to many, many performances. And i must say, this song is as special as they get.
This song is like a time machine for me. It brings me back to time when it seemed like life would never end. The beauty of her voice transcends you. It is a very emotional song for me. Life was much less complicated.
I am there with you, but a different perspective. For me it transports me back to when my ex and I tried but just couldn't work it out. Coming up close. But hey, 30 + years later we remain friends, enjoying our adult kids and bunch of Grandkids.
@@davidscottthayer8078 Good for you and your ex, Dave, and I am imagining you are an inspiration for your children and grandchildren, of acceptance, forgiveness, and love. God bless.
This song is just beyond beautiful. I remember 40 years ago, a friend and I carved our hearts in the wall of an old house. The house has been gone for many years...as well as that friend. Something sorta ironic about that. Kinda wish one...or the other was still around to mark our spot... Everything has a story.
I see a couple of great Aimee stories here - pls let me share mine. She used to live around the corner from me in the South End (where I'd see her smtimes getting coffee at Charlie's). It was sophmore year at NU and I'd jst moved off campus w/ 2 roommates. One of em came home with the guitarist one night (who ended up giving us tix to see them at the Orpheum jst weeks later). It was a great concert (her voice resonated in that hall). Saw her backstage and then ran into her few times around the neighborhood. She'd say Hi and was always real kind. This is probably my favorite Til Tuesday song. Maybe it's the infective melody, but more likely it's the heartfelt story that always seems to drive me home. Thx for the great memories Aimee...
Amiee is so much more than Till Tuesday, She is one of the very best solo women singers there is. She has a beautiful flowing voice, Like honey and peace..
Aimee IS 'Til Tuesday. She's ok as a country music artist but she was absolutely brilliant as the heart of TT. That music is timeless like no other and always will be. ;)
Bill6375 Yup. She seems so unhappy, or pissed or bitter, when I've heard her interviewed. Music industry might have done 'er over. Wish she'd unplug and let the shit flow! She was in town last year with Ted Leo, but I couldn't catch it.
moz Did you grow up in the 1980s? They were one of the most famous bands from the 1980s in the NY, NJ. Connecticut Tri- State area, and Pennsylvania. ??
I agree .. Aimee was sush a prolific writer and much more animated she was heavy into the punk thing them. I think she had some sort of melt down. Totally different persona now
Beautiful song with a perfectly pitched sense of loss, wisdom and things that end. Their finest moment but all three albums should be required listening for all who treasure good music.
makes me weep this song the sense of loss in our lives for me it was loving a guy who i never told and had the chance to tell him but never took the chance and regret not telling him, this song makes me think about such loss
This song played on the radio one night while I was driving in Hawaii. One of those magical nights. That beautiful voice and melody still stirs my soul 33 years later. Thank you Aimee!
Till Tuesday had minor airplay here in Australia in the 80s. It 'Coming up Close' was on an FM station one night and just blew me away. We had REO Speed wagon, Gary Newman, early Eurythmics and the like but Ammie and the band were musical brilliance personified. 'Lovers Day' was another of her power ballads. The audio range CD dynamics that are not compressed are the best for her voice . The Eighties & Nineties hold a unique place where pure talent came to the fore. I've seen a lot of unique musicians close up, Im sorry I missed her in her prime in the US. Guys & Gal's who did see them on stage I reckon you've drank from the silver cup already "America" with respect. Perfection will always rise from the Ashes, Love to the music . Cheers Johno, Brisbane, Australia.
I went to see the Moody Blues at the Tanglewood theater in western Massachusetts in the early/mid 80's. I was totally thrilled to discover that 'Til Tuesday was the opening band! So glad I got to see them live. This is one of my favorite, all-time songs.
Great songs transcend through years and genres...In my opinion, this is one. Hope more people are blessed to hear it, as I am, every time I hear a new artist or song.
That feeling as your breath catches and your heart skips, rediscovering a beautiful song you haven't heard in years, Aimee's voice bringing buried memories flooding back 🧡
This fills me with painful nostalgia, not just for that confused time in college, but because I remember how music used to matter. Sure there is always good and bad music from any time, but I feel like the eighties may have been the last gasp , compared to what we've become.
“That confused time in college…”. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that there were SO MANY OF US…lost, confused and alone at that age. Why couldn’t we find each other?!
OMG, what a time, a time it was. 80s & 90s, so much drivel passes for music today, too much attitude, too many lost guys & girls , too much Fake Book, too many iPhones, too much easy debt , I rest my case. 🤨
I'm in the UK and only just found this band, completely hooked. back in the 80's some UK stuff didn't do anything stateside and vice versa, how this wasn't massive here in the UK I have no idea.
Hands down one of the most mesmerizing songs I have ever heard. This caught hold of me 30 years ago and never let go. The longing in her voice. The story told. Simply exquisite
This is perhaps my favorite track from this band. Aimee Mann said she wanted this to be the first single from the album ‘Welcome Home,’ but the label chose “What About Love” instead. That song proved to be a moderate hit. When “Coming Up Close” was released, I believe the label failed to properly promote it. In my opinion, this song should have been a monster hit. …but they didn’t ask me…
This was the video that made me go out and buy this album many moons ago. This reminds me of my girl friend Sandy one night we discussed Dylan and listened to his album "Infidels" which she gave to me for my birthday. She accidently spilled perfume on the inner sleeve of the album as we both laughed. The scent of the perfume is all but gone now, but every once in a while the memory of those long ago days takes me back. Fun factoid Aimee sings on Rush's song "Time Stands Still."
Bingo, Kyle, I challenge anyone to listen to that album and not have their jaw drop. This song is masterpiece, and she is such a wonderful talent who never got her just acclaim IMHO
Love Aimee! Worked right down the street, from her, at lasalle music The 80's , were the best! Beautiful person, beautiful voice! Thank you , for sharing, your beautiful voice!!!!!!!!!!
I was dating a somewhat older woman the year this song came out. I really cared about her, and thought the relationship could go further, but, in the end, she felt I was too young. The song really mirrors our last time together. Instead of us "driving around the field hor hours", we talked as we drove 9 hours (one way) to the Louisiana state line. We just couldn't find common ground in it anymore so we turned around and drove back, neither one of us talked on the way back. This album hit so many buttons in my life during the 80's.
What a beautiful song!! I rediscovered it today on an old "mix-tape" from the late 80s. Now I hear it in an endless loop and I can't get enough of it. ❤️
This song, with its beautiful, haunting melody, and enigmatic story-line, helped me get through one of the toughest times in my life. I can't believe Aimee Mann is 60 now.
It amazes me how I can miss a Beautiful song like this when it came out and I worked in a record store 30 years ago and I am just now learning about this song. Good thing I turned on TOTALLY 80's this past Sunday. LOVE this song.
Yep the other side was all Hair and a whole bunch of noise!! It was a bad time for rock as it was about the show not the music get a wig , guitar, and that's pretty much it lol
I’ve never seen this video before. I’ve heard the song and always thought it was haunting. To see it like this brings a whole new appreciation to it. I could feel her singing and it really pulls at my emotions. This is a rare moment where it all just comes together. A true gift to us all. Really incredible song and performance.
I remember the first time I heard this song. I was at work and it was noisy, I could barely hear it; but the harmonies cut thru all the racket and I thought that the title had to be "Coming up Close". I immediately went to the record store looking for the title (not knowing the band at all) and found it almost immediately. What a score that turned out to be; I turned on many people to Til Tuesday. I love Aimee's voice!
...I just found this song, a forgotten treasure from one of the most under-rated bands of the 80's...."Til Tuesday...I haven't heard this song in 30 years, and it's crazy how from the few notes, all the memories kept coming back to me in waves!!...I soooo miss quality music like this, and hauntingly beautiful voices like Miss Mann!!...I especially sooooooo miss the 80's!!...(sigh!)...and, thanks so much for sharing!!...lol...
Amiee Mann has a voice like "Liquid Gold" and she flows so Beautifully! And what a musical composition by Til Tuesday and its fantastic group on instrumentation !
Nice to know that some songs can still rip your heart out. I just drove away. Biggest mistake of my life. But I'm okay.I drove 700 miles to hear Aimee play The Loft in NYC. I wasn't disappointed. I know I'm a good man. My kids prove that every day. But I would have loved to share a few drinks and some great conversation with someone like Aimee in the 80's. Martha Davis, Dale and Terrie Bozio werem't a disappointment. But the Coconut Grove just didn't make us happy. Talented but shallow as a spit farm.
Absolutely no words to describe how much I have loved this song since I first heard it back in the 80's....still do more than ever. Simply one of the best rock songs ever written and performed. So beautiful, just like AImee Mann.
Luscious, melodic, flowing, sweet, and melancholy. I thought it was good when I was 22. I think it's great now that I'm 62. Thank you, Aimee.
Totally agree. Mark of a great song, gets better with age!
Oh so beautifully said. Thank you. Aimee has been a huge inspiration since my teen years. I was at this show!🙏

She was an “old soul” - mature beyond her (and our) years 😊

I love her voice in the past 20 years even more. She became more of herself.
Isn't it beautiful.....
Oh, by the way....
One of those songs where you literally feel every word tearing into your heart......💔
This song is like a time machine for me. It brings me back to time when it seemed like life would never end. The beauty of her voice transcends you. It is a very emotional song for me. Life was much less complicated.
Feeling ya. Johno 😂👍
God bless.
Perfectly Said
This song is just beyond beautiful. I remember 40 years ago, a friend and I carved our hearts in the wall of an old house. The house has been gone for many years...as well as that friend. Something sorta ironic about that. Kinda wish one...or the other was still around to mark our spot... Everything has a story.
"I can make a dream that is barely half awake come true" .... I love her lyrics and powerful voice.
Beautiful line...

Soooo cool for you.......Aimee has an awesome voice love her!!
The genius of these lyrics has made me cry for decades.
That music is timeless like no other and always will be. ;)
I love her, too........been a fan for 30 years.
Such a great what happened made enough money or something came along and changed everything Like maybe Cldie Lauper or Nervana I can't remember
William Hollifield Drinking and typing, William?
Bill6375 Yup. She seems so unhappy, or pissed or bitter, when I've heard her interviewed. Music industry might have done 'er over. Wish she'd unplug and let the shit flow! She was in town last year with Ted Leo, but I couldn't catch it.
one of the greatest travesties that TT were never recognised as a great band, this is just a wonderful song
moz shhhhhh. Keep quiet. Or else the rest of the world will like it and then ruin it by putting it in a commercial for Ford trucks.
My song
moz Did you grow up in the 1980s? They were one of the most famous bands from the 1980s in the NY, NJ. Connecticut Tri- State area, and Pennsylvania. ??
As you stated, regional appeal only. Moz is correct.
Doesn't change the fact that this was a great band.
I agree .. Aimee was sush a prolific writer and much more animated she was heavy into the punk thing them. I think she had some sort of melt down. Totally different persona now
Without question, one of the best songs ever written.
Totally agree. Amazing song. Amazing songwriter. But they’re not playing this live. I came here looking for a live version
Best song of the 80s. This sing has followed me living in 6 states.
the guitar playing on this is sublime.
The "Lost Generation" never found itself. Its heirs still wander.
well said paul
Amen!
Nah, their first album isn't very good
Underated but very critically acclaimed.. People don't realize how important she was to other artists.. Great voice and wicked talented!!
The same kind of wicked talent as Adele Dazeem?
This makes me feel something that I can't explain.
Nostalgia, maybe?
Makes me feel the pain and regret of someone special now long gone, of a life that has passed me by.
go with it glowgirl :)
@@dannunya959 What a sweet thing to say. I really need that and I thank you:-}]
Unrequited love. Remorse. Sadness yet hope...I so love this song and all that it reminds me of.
This song played on the radio one night while I was driving in Hawaii. One of those magical nights. That beautiful voice and melody still stirs my soul 33 years later. Thank you Aimee!
Nice!
😊
Hawaii is beautiful; awe-inspiring... I have visited Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.
Perfection will always rise from the Ashes,
Love to the music . Cheers Johno, Brisbane, Australia.
Why on earth wasn’t this a hit?
because not everyone knows what actually good music is
She was and still is a brilliant singer songwriter
Welcome Home. Boston in the 1980s. A real time and place. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
This song reminds me of the summer of '87, the beach and sunsets. God, what a great time to be alive.
This song makes me cry. It's so sad and beautiful. I love her and I love her voice. You can feel and see it. One of the best songs ever.💗😭
Me too. 😭
I sure do miss the 70’s & 80’s. Sometimes, I wish I could find a time machine and go back in time. Life was much easier. Is this your favorite song?
I went to see the Moody Blues at the Tanglewood theater in western Massachusetts in the early/mid 80's. I was totally thrilled to discover that 'Til Tuesday was the opening band! So glad I got to see them live. This is one of my favorite, all-time songs.
Omg I am drowning in nostalgia. I was 16 when this song came out 😢❤ The tears of happiness are flowing
For me listening to beautiful songs like this it's almost heartbreaking to realize where I'm at now and what I'm living in now.
Great songs transcend through years and genres...In my opinion, this is one. Hope more people are blessed to hear it, as I am, every time I hear a new artist or song.
Tears in my eyes before the vocals even begin. What a song!
That feeling as your breath catches and your heart skips, rediscovering a beautiful song you haven't heard in years, Aimee's voice bringing buried memories flooding back 🧡
This was me this morning! Woke up with this song running through my head!
I have always thought that this was their best album, and this is one of their best songs. So many feels every time I hear it.
I've lost count of how many times I've played this recently. It's on high rotation in my head and it just keeps getting better.

One of the finest songs ever written, in stark contrast to the crap being out out these past 20 years.
Only 20?
💯Truth
I'm in the UK and only just found this band, completely hooked. back in the 80's some UK stuff didn't do anything stateside and vice versa, how this wasn't massive here in the UK I have no idea.
They weren't that big here either except for their hit song Voices Carry. I thought this song was the Indigo Girls when I first heard it.
Look up the Boston band "Tribe" , alt rock, amazing female vocal harmonies... never quite broke out

…but they didn’t ask me…
A Masterpiece. One of my all time top 10 songs
Richard Zeeb Me too. Easily.
My favorite one. To
Exactly!
A little piece of perfection. Makes you believe in the power of music.
Just an awesome , haunting song. One of my favorites.
Essa canção é de doer a alma.
A Masterpiece. One of my all time top 10 songs
This came from one hell of an album
Bingo, Kyle, I challenge anyone to listen to that album and not have their jaw drop.
This song is masterpiece, and she is such a wonderful talent who never got her just acclaim IMHO
How much fame is enough?
Totally agree with you!
Can't believe how much I love this song. All these many years later and I'm still listening to it and visualizing the story.
This is a near perfect song that is just 11O% timeless. Priceless gift for an untold number of future generations. Amazing.
Brakes my heart every time I see her sing this song. I will always love her 😢
This came from one hell of an album
Yeah, whole album is pretty good.
Close your eyes and listen. You will be taken back to a memorable place in time.
WoW
what a fantastic post.
thanks for takin the time
😢
What a beautiful song!! I rediscovered it today on an old "mix-tape" from the late 80s. Now I hear it in an endless loop and I can't get enough of it. ❤️
the guitar in this song never fails to give me chills even after 30 years
This song makes you weep for me it's about lost loves and the good times of life it's just beautiful
This song, with its beautiful, haunting melody, and enigmatic story-line, helped me get through one of the toughest times in my life. I can't believe Aimee Mann is 60 now.
I’m glad she helped you.
We all are 60 now...Time stand still...
Such a great song! Aimee Mann deserves more credit.
It amazes me how I can miss a Beautiful song like this when it came out and I worked in a record store 30 years ago and I am just now learning about this song. Good thing I turned on TOTALLY 80's this past Sunday. LOVE this song.
I just loved this side of the eighties :)
Yep the other side was all Hair and a whole bunch of noise!! It was a bad time for rock as it was about the show not the music get a wig , guitar, and that's pretty much it lol
Amen...
I’ve never seen this video before. I’ve heard the song and always thought it was haunting. To see it like this brings a whole new appreciation to it. I could feel her singing and it really pulls at my emotions. This is a rare moment where it all just comes together. A true gift to us all. Really incredible song and performance.
"There was a farmhouse that had long been deserted. We stopped and carved our hearts into the wooden surface." Love those lines.
"Don't you know that I can make a dream that's barely half awake come true" pure brilliance
It is.
Aimee Mann and Til Tuesday ROCKED and this song is TIMELESS!
I remember this song playing as i flew into Logan Airport coming home on leave from West Berlin.........great feeling to be back in Massachusetts!!
I've lived this song so many times...take a deep breath and feel the joy and sadness in your heart
She is so profound and genius. And her sincerity is absolutely enthralling. Why weren’t they more popular guys???
I remember the first time I heard this song. I was at work and it was noisy, I could barely hear it; but the harmonies cut thru all the racket and I thought that the title had to be "Coming up Close". I immediately went to the record store looking for the title (not knowing the band at all) and found it almost immediately. What a score that turned out to be; I turned on many people to Til Tuesday. I love Aimee's voice!
...I just found this song, a forgotten treasure from one of the most under-rated bands of the 80's...."Til Tuesday...I haven't heard this song in 30 years, and it's crazy how from the few notes, all the memories kept coming back to me in waves!!...I soooo miss quality music like this, and hauntingly beautiful voices like Miss Mann!!...I especially sooooooo miss the 80's!!...(sigh!)...and, thanks so much for sharing!!...lol...
shes so talented she writes and produces all her own music
Amiee Mann has a voice like "Liquid Gold" and she flows so Beautifully! And what a musical composition by Til Tuesday and its fantastic group on instrumentation !
Omg I have fallen so much in love with this sound, I wish artists could do anything close to this these days
What's sad is that virtually no radio stations played this song I heard this outside of an urban area on stations way out in small towns
For my money, Aimee man has the most haunting and beautiful voice I've ever heard in my life.
I completely agree.
Born in '79...I was an 80s kid and 90s teen. Love both decades!
It tugs at my heart - love, love this group!! I want the 80's back so much -- my friends and I agree on that!!

Brilliant song. I first heard this on cassette my first year in college.
She sings a movie. I friggin love this song.
The chorus just washes over you. I had forgotten this tune, so glad I rediscovered it.
Aimee Mann is one of our national treasures when it comes to singer/songwriters.
Absolutely no words to describe how much I have loved this song since I first heard it back in the 80's....still do more than ever. Simply one of the best rock songs ever written and performed. So beautiful, just like AImee Mann.
