Civ 5 vs Civ 6: • What Civilization Game...
Today I'm giving my full and final review of Civ 6, something I haven't actually done before! I've reviewed the New Frontier Pass, and discussed which civ game you should play or buy in 2021, but this is the first and final time I'm reviewing civ 6 as a standalone experience. I'll cover the base, vanilla game, and the additions that the DLC and expansion passes brought! Let's chat all things #CivilizationVI #Civ6 and #Review before we all go and take just #OneMoreTurn
    Timeline:
    0:00 - Overview and Intro
    0:50 - DLC and Expansions
2:15 - Free Access and Price
    3:20 - Colourful, Cartoony Controversy
    5:20 - Civ 5 vs Civ 6 Graphics Comparison
    6:20 - Districts and Complexity
9:50 - Science and Civics Trees
    12:50 - Replayability?

I am totally with you on the graphics. I was a Civ V fanatic and was very disappointed in how Civ VI looked. That’s why I haven’t played Civ VI up until recently that is until the New Frontier pass. Now the graphics have grown on me, especially in late game when every tile is occupied. Overall I love Civ VI so much now that I can’t stop playing it.

I've been playing Civ since 1991... 30 years! My favorite of all was Civ2 in terms of ease of moddability - I made an all Texas mod for it. Civ 3 was disappointing, Civ 4 was much better, if cartoony, didn't play Civ 5 because I was doing tons of EU4 and disparaged ahistorical games, but I've come back to Civ 6 because I can see it for what it is - there's fun historical flavor, but it's essentially a board game with a random board and tons of math puzzle mini-games within the overall game. The district puzzle is one of its best features, and always satisfies when you can find a way to get a +4 yield or greater from a tile.

It was up to the player to discover those conditions to successfully solve the game. In the years since, additional complexity and variability was added to make the game have good replay value. At the heart, however, was the player searching for those stable operating conditions needed to win the game.

I just got the full package deal on PS4, and for any of my console brethren seeking answers, here's my initial thoughts.
    (Played on a PS4 pro)
Game runs well, smooth animation, no stuttering or noticeable bugs. The controls are highly unintuitive, you really do have to play the tutorial on this one, and if you've played Civilization Revolution you are in for a rough first time as many features from that game don't exist in civ 6, such as combining 3 troops into an army, or everything having big, obvious button prompts that make actions self explanatory. you really have to learn civ 6 more than revolution (yes I know civ rev is old, it's the only real comparison I have).
The DLC is added in a weird manner, you don't just play with all your DLC, you choose which ruleset to play under, leading to some confusion as to which to play and how they play.
Overall, I'm enjoying the game, it's providing everything I wanted out of a new civilization game, it just does so in a slightly inconvenient way. I'd give it a 7/10 if I had to score it.

OK, you've convinced me to give this a shot. I haven't played a Civ game for more than 20 years -- 4 computers ago, so it was probably Civ 2 (???) -- and I was a bit apprehensive of all the tech improvements and game revisions/enhancements since the 90s, whether the newest version of the game would be easy enough for me to re-learn. But after watching your video and hearing your praise for the overall game -- the excitement in your voice was rather contagious -- I cannot resist giving it a shot. Of course, having the game on sale at Steam for only $8.99 certainly didn't add any deterrents either. :)
Nevertheless, thanks for posting this review, even though I couldn't quite figure out at first what the heck you were talking about when describing something called the "tick" trees - and then it finally hit me when you mentioned New Zealand - "Oh, he's talking about TECH trees, as in 'technology' and NOT an insect." Now that all makes sense. Haha

I agree that the depth of the game, one of its biggest strengths, is also a barrier to a new player with an unwillingness to learn anything with depth... but since there are so many difficulty levels, any new player actually willing to give it time will still be able to play an enjoyable game on lower difficulties as they learn the finer intricacies.., resource wasting is much more forgiving in chieftain and settler playthroughs than in the upper difficulties where maximization is the only way to survive. So I think it accommodates a new player rather well... that the depth is, well, just that, is what makes Civ a VERY worthwhile experience... and I think for some of the more "casual" gamers, they would much rather LESS depth. Thankfully, this game is not made for them.

The graphical comparison vs Civ 5, also had me holding off buying Civ 6. With the winter sale on Steam, I was able to get a complete game at a great bargain. All the new features, it can be overwhelming and confusing sometimes. I like the Eureka for the tech and civics tree, but do think that they went to far with the complexity. Quite a lot of civics have what arguably should be a technology upgrade and a lot of the civics cards are basically unused or highly situational.

I loved Civ6 pretty much from day 1. I was never a fan of Civ5's civics system.....& definitely felt the Civ6 Civics Tree made a lor more sense. I also loved how governments & social policies worked together, though I do wish the system had been more granular (the way it was in Civ4). Speaking of Civ4, I wish that religion had more impact on diplomacy & politics, like it did in Civ4.
I also liked how Civ6 brought across a lot of the best things about Civ5-like City States, 1UPT, & the Religion & Espionage systems. That said, there were some things dropped that I wish had been retained-like bullying & protecting City States, the timed City State Quests & having City States being naturally friendly or hostile towards eachother. I also wish they'd retained Ideologies and the theming bonuses for Great Works placed in Wonders. Overall, though, I play civ6 more often in 2021 than I was playing Civ5 in 2016, so I definitely feel Civ6 has the greater longevity (even if they still refuse to release the .dll file).

You mentioned the importance of city specialization....has something changed in patches or DLCs? Last I played, one of the reasons the game lost me was because it seemed the best strategy was to simply spam cities, similar to Civ 3, since they'd done away with corruption. Further, I did not get the sense that there was any point in specializing cities since each district and item gave a flat fixed bonus rather than a percentage....In other words, +5 science is +5 science no matter the city. Barring some other need or critical adjacency bonus, there's no reason not to build every district in every city so long as you can fit them, no?

I actually think the graphics fit the game perfectly. They are a joke, just as the game itself is a joke with regards to history. Apart from the mobile game graphics, it introduces city districts, which is a perfectly accurate depiction of the way cities were organized in Antiquity. This fits right there with the graphics and the tone of the game. In all seriousness, if you're looking for a good strategy game, or even a good historical game, there are better choices out there in this day and age. Civilization series, to today's standards is just a mindless slot machine where you pull the "next turn" lever every few actions, in the hope you'll get something interesting. The game doesn't provide any meaningful decision making, and the AI is nonexistent.

But after you've done it a few times it just becomes so tedious and annoying... like religious units, governors, age points etc. I bought all content at full price but only played the game for some 250ish hours, with still no real clue about any details I'm just playing and building. The one thing Civ VI has done for me is appreciate Civ V more. Because back in the day I was disappointed with its lack of statistics and info screens compared with IV. But somehow VI is even worse at it. Like... why can't it remind me of trade agreements? Why can't I sort my cities by production?

12:52 I find the huge number of playable civs in the newer Civilization games to be off-putting. Firaxis should focus on fewer civs and make them more interesting (more special traits, more leader choices, etc.).
There's no need to pander by making every little country in the world (Colombia! Jamaica! Switerland!) a playable civilization when it should really just be a tribe of barbarians. And barbarians are actually pretty cool, right? 😀

This was the worst game in the series for me. The only Civ game that was never stable, and I've played them since Civ 1. No matter what I did, the game would regularly lock up and crash to the desktop. It was the only game I own that did this, and I was always running current drivers etc. I just finally gave up on the game.

World maps are simply too small. Your city is literally 1/8th the width of the world. And while districts might add some new gameplay mechanics... I feel it just destroys immersion and hurts the reason I've always played Civ for. I just can't get immersed in 100km plus wide cities especially in comparison to small world size. Improvements use to feel like outside towns, which I don't know why they didn't just implement those. Or make improvements not take up entire tiles. I mean, I played Civ 3 games with larger maps than even modded civ 6 has. Game is also buggy and shit and I cannot tolerate the DLC policy. And I personally just don't like the development concept of adding all these mini game modes and shit. Like... maybe I'm weird but even if you are someone who does that sort of thing (small minority I'd imagine) it's a one and done sort of thing in reality. Why waste development time doing such things? Also I don't like the balance of civilizations. They don't ALL have same amount of unique units, buildings, districts etc. Oh and yeah, agree, graphics just don't work for me. I use CIV 5 graphic mod and it's a little better. But it's not the colorfulness I dont' like but the cartoony nature of it. Hugely disappointing direction they took the game. It's basically a historical themed board game now instead of a historical arcade-ish strategy game. Played since Civ 2.

I would disagree on the diversity of civilisations and leaders. Europe obviously played a crucial role in the world’s history and you could still make arguments for civs like Belgium or Bohemia (the Czechs) to be in the game. I am all for more civs from around the globe as long as they don’t replace the ones that we have but are added.
Also, I get the feeling (controversial!) that some women leaders were kind of forced. France’s Eleonor and Catherine are probably the best example.

    • @JumboPixel
      @JumboPixel  3 роки тому +3

Fair enough! I was not suggesting EU civs don’t deserve to be in the game. Very important.
Haha controversial alright! Less than 25% of leaders are female so I think they’re still underrepresented. Sadly this is true throughout history. Historians under represented and failed to record a disproportionately high amount of info for female leaders. Eleanor is a fantastic example of that actually, having been Queen Consort of basically all of modern day Britain, France, and surrounding countries for decades in a highly challenging political climate.

I was really sad they didn't do Wu Zetian. She was empress of china for 50(!) years and had an insane amount of stuff happen. She also was like, insanely ruthless politically, and surprisingly egalitarian towards the peasants (lowered taxes, while significantly increasing national productivity, power, scientific advancement through shrewd policy reforms.)
Anyway, I would have loved to see her as a faction leader.

I generally like 5 five most, though I'd easily accept a solid argument that two was better. People raving about 3 and 4 always baffle me though.
      Alpha Centauri was also great.
I also hated Civ 6: religion is just terribly unbalanced (as of last time I played, at least) and the AI was just so defective as to render the rest of the game unsalvagable. (Mind you, Alpha Centauri, some factions' AI was such that they'd deathspiral from economic mismanagement if they survived long enough, not due to ideological flaws, but just due to AI coding. But that was generally a late game problem, and you still had to deal with their Existing huge armies.)
