One thing I loved about Civ, that I only discovered after we had it for years, was that ALL text in the game existed in .txt files that were amazingly easy to edit!
I remember being 12, and my dad loved the game, so I stayed up all night, and edited all the text, from the intro movie (I think it partially exists because the world is being generated while it plays), through to everything else. He totally freaked out when the opening movie started it's first two normal lines, only to go "Wait, wait... again? Larry, seriously? How many times are you going to start a new game? Should I even give you choices, or just assume you'll play Shaka Zulu again?"
He had no idea what was going on LOL.
That was always the best thing about old games, how easy it was to "mod" them. I remember picking up a sprite in Civ 2 and changing the settlers unit to be a tiny Dr Phil by editing the image in MS Paint.
That's so great lol
This is why we should never have kids 😂
It was at that exact point that the Terminator theme spontaneously started playing in Larry's head.
@@yaziyo Dr Phil was around then??
That long intro had a point... on computers of the day, it actually took almost all that time to generate the map!
Not on Amiga. This intro is the first thing you see after starting the diskette with this game, and it's unskippable, not like on DoS, where you see it after setting a map, and you can skip it as soon as the map is generated. So if you want to play it on Amiga, you have additional around 10 minutes to make yourself something to eat and drink.
@@modiFive You are remembering it wrong. On the Amiga it was, start game, select map settings (large, arid, etc) then you got the intro (map generation) then you get to pick difficulty, number of civs, etc. I played civ 1 first one an amiga 500, eventually ended up with a much faster 1200 and that intro speed was much shorter on the 1200 which I had upgraded.
@@craigh5236 Possibly, it was so long time ago, anyways on A600 with 1MB expansion i have never been able to skip it.
Most civ games still do this 5 and 6 still do this if your running them on older hardware
One of the greatest video game intros of all time imo.
You need to do a Civilization Series Retrospective just like you did Sim City. That would be amazing.
Kim justice has one for civ 1 and 2 that's def worth checking out! She plans to do 3 at some point!
"Farthole builds Collosus." No truer words were said in the dark age of 90s PC gaming.
7:02 diplomat with zero damage wins a fight against a militia... thats the core mechanic of civ one... ahhh good old times.
Not much has changed,I remember playing Civ III and having an elite tank attack a bronze-age spearman, and my tank died.
I remember attacking a settler with a battleship... and losing.
MetaNomad I recall tank vs spearman in a city and losing.. gamer rage activated
That's the basic plot for several action movies lol
Battleship vs. Phalnax, no contest she's going down.
The AI definitely cheats. They took over a city I had, and the next turn I took it back. They built three buildings in one turn that I didn't have, which would not be possible for the player.
Or in civ V they sell bloody everything. Fuck you AI.
+Blood Angel There was no development AI in Civ 1. All the things they built happened at random.
+British Hound In Civ 5, at turn one, the AI has 20 happiness ON PRINCE (normal) DIFFICULTY
+firefox3249 Yep, the AI always plays on Settler, no matter what difficulty you play, never mind the AI only buffs it gets past Prince.
Ironman1o1 I've seen buffs in lesser difficulties
The game manuals for the Civ games are so satisfyingly massive! I have the manual for Civ 3, and that thing is bigger than some of the books we had in school.
The manual for the first game especially. It was more of a book of learning than a game manual.
Game manuals today are a complete disgrace.
KratostheThird
What manuals? Haha
Grand Theft Auto V didn't even come with a manual. You had to get it online and it was just horrible.
Im Caj
yea i remember as a child how i loved the manuals.. while waiting for installation or when i wasnt allowed playing i read the manual and looked forward to play the game :)
+OnePunch Mickey damn
I thought it was only me :/
And I'm 16
7:02
Killed by a barbarian diplomat.
That's rough
hahaha i was just about to put a similar kind of comment up. you'd think that was the easiest 100c ever earnt, but no....
SoilentGr33n - no that’s a barbarian leader. They look the same.
Battles is what I absolutely despise about Civ1. It's so illogically out the ass it ruins any bit of fun you get from war.
dammit he's worth $100!
This game always gives me the "one more turn" disease.
I'm afraid to start CIV IV up because i usually don't emerge for a day or two after i do xD
All those late nights, telling myself I need to conquer this city, I need to build this new city, I definitely need to see that ship being built and thus the end turn button is pressed -- it never truly ends.
Johan Johansson it is too addictive
Civ IV sucked. I played Civ III until CIv VI came along...
We had the Mac version of this game in the 90s and it became the first computer game I was ever addicted to. I could barely focus on schoolwork. I couldn't wait to get home to play and then I'd play it for hours! It's amazing I didn't flunk out of school, I did so little homework. The only other game that got me as excited/addicted to play was Myst.
Awesome! Please do Civ 2!
Up
How can he do a game?
And without consent wouldn't it be illegal.
Wow big fan of yours Mr. Vasc
Give us more Civ reviews, noble leader, that they may sheathe their memories in the beating hearts of your subscribers!
The intro is giant loading screen to watch while your computer generates the map. On my Amiga this intro could run for a very very long time!
My introduction to the Civ franchise was Civ II. Those arguing advisors were hilarious.
Mine as well.
However my first run in with this franchise was on the PlayStation one.
I still have the same disc from 20 years ago😂.
Anyway I found this cheat code in a old magazine back then that enables you to get pretty much infinite money so you can buy and build everything almost immediately.
Added a whole new dynamic to the game when playing on Emperor.
Bought a Pc a few years later and never looked back.
Wow, so this is where the Civilization series started, and honestly, it hasn't changed too much in terms of gameplay and that's a good thing, honestly because all the games in the series have always been awesome.
Stephen Kovok At least, in my personal opinion.
Just...One...More...Turn... (Twelve Hours Later)...Well, looks like I'm calling in sick today.
What was your favourite Civ game? :)
Nathaniel Christopher I played them all and I have to say it goes like this from best to worst:
Civ IV
Civ II
Civ V
Civ III
Civ I
Civ IV was my favourite as well. I love all the scenarios in the expansion packs.
Many times
@@NathanielChristopher exactly. civ iv had the best mods. esp rhyes
I do wish the new games had kept the personal palace.
All hail Duke Nukem of the Babe-lonian Empire
A very satisfying video. As someone who has come to age between Pong and Super Mario World I can fully agree. "Old" games aren't really old. The are just less marketable from a corporative perspective. But from an IRL perspective the good ones are as valid as chess, or backgammon. Just recently I downloaded a game from 2005 (not that old from my view), "The Movies". The result? Hours of satisfying gameplay.
I discovered this game a few weeks ago and fell in love with it, my first night of playing after I finally understood the basics I Played from 6pm until almost 4am, not realizing how long I had been playing, highly addictive stuff.
Oh, the AI definitely cheats. This series even has it's own folder on the "The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard" trope page in the Notable Offenders area. For example, this game in particular:
-Improvements in the Emperor level are about a third of the cost for the computer
-Technologies are discovered at alarming rates
-Wonders can be built almost instantly
-The computer's caravans are transported instantaneously
-The computer never has production penalties despite city-wide riots
-Your Triremes sink if they end their turn too far from shore. Computer controlled ones can sail across the Atlantic with no problem
-The computer can build spaceships without the required tecnology
Et cetera
Civ 5 straight up tells you the AI cheats if you play over prince difficulty.
Thanks doc
9:48 "Detroit Builds Library"
I see the joke you made there. ;-)
Captain Obvious, Just Detroit builds is enough now to lol
I work next to the Detroit library? What's the joke?
+Deca
The joke is "Last one out turn off the lights".
r/woooooooosh
@@MyPhobo The joke is that Detroit is sturggling,so they cannot build anything so building a library is a big achievement.Sorry

Little King John you're not the real lil king john... potato knishes

Civ II was always my poison of choice. Every now and then I still pick the game up and give it a whirl. Even now I'm still rubbish at it.
@0:07 ... Wait.. You have Hardwar, but no review of Hardwar? I... I am... crushed, absolutely crushed sir. I love your videos and hope that some day you can visit the title.
I've only just realised that the science advisor looks like Sid Meier!
Lol. You name stuff after Duke Nukem in your videos I noticed. I used to do the EXACT same thing when I was a teen. In Civ, my leader would be Duke Nukem. In Sim City my town would be named after him. Or if I played an RPG that you could name your characters (Like 'Final Fantasy' or 'Earthblund), I would name them Duke. The Duke Nukem franchise was one of my most favorite games. So was Civilization, and Sim Earth, Sim City, etc. Other franchises were Doom and Silent Hill. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Time Killers. I never played 'Way of the Warrior' on 3DO, but I imagined I would love it.
wow, blast from the past! I remember Civ 2 when Nuclear Gandhi was a thing
It was a rare bug in Civ 1, but they liked it so much, they included it on purpose for the next 4 games.
This was a huge part of my childhood. Wonderful memories
I love this game so damn much. I can't imagine how much time I've put into Civ 1 over my lifetime. Started playing it in the late 90s and still play it every so often to this day. Probably many thousands of hours.
I know this... "Just one more turn... 5h later... Just another turn. Oh f*** the night is over, i should sleep at least a few hours." Not many games let me enjoy so much hours of intensing game experiences.
Even on January 2, 2017, the original Civilization is still one of the best games ever made, on any platform.
Agreed.
Totally agreed.
It is very much this one game's fault that I got high grades in English and history in school back in the early 90s.
It might not be the game I've played the most, but it is easily (with a HUGE margin!) the game that I've enjoyed the most.
Plus I love the music. It has something very, very special to it, that I cannot explain. :)
-----------------------
I noticed that you said it came on 2x 5.25" disks. Aren't they just 1.2 MB each? My big brother had Civ I as well, and it was 3x 3.5" (1.44 MB) disks. 4, if he used one for savegames.
Okay - so it's negative if I aimed at getting low grades in English and history, but this ¤#¤%&¤!&%!&!! game fucked that up. :-D
civ 3 is awesome and I still play it
I feel the same way. I still play civ 1. I've tried a few other civs, but I always go back to the original.
The music in the beginning really sent me back
I really like your channel bro!
I wish you more luck
Thank you!
I love the historical aspects of your reviews. It really shows your work and dedication. Keep it up ! :)
This is crazy that through every single game and its expansion from I-V, the interface and idea hasn't changed THAT much... All it's been is upped in graphics, change a bit of gameplay here or there, but the fundamental core is always the same... This is cool to see :) Thank you for this!
All hail the Babylonian bearded overlord..... DUKE NUKEM
i hope he rules the world
Probably in the top three of most time-eating games I had on my Amiga, along with Frontier and X-Com. Great review of a great game :D
1:38 I see Eye of the Beholder back there. Definitely one of the D&D greats. I spent many an hour playing that one as a wee lad. ^_^
i could listen to this guy for ever
I first stumbled upon Sid Meier's Civilization at the mall at a store called 'The Discovery Channel Store' They had several computers open with this game on one of them. In the few minutes I played it, I was hooked and ended up getting it later.
It's crazy to see how game graphics has evolved since the 1990's and the 2000 - 2005's
+NaturalHD This looked crappy even in 1991.
+NaturalHD Oh yes!
Then got even better in the 2010's (civ 5), and then got worse about halfway through the decade (civ 6).
RRW civ 6 looks a lot better than 5.
Noah Baldwin it does
One of the earliest and greatest games in the game history. Gives me many sweet memories in the early days of PC.
I've spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours across every iteration of Civ. Watching this... I can't believe how RIGHT they got it right off the bat!!
My favorite game of all time. Still play it from time to time and I doubt I'll play it occasionally the rest of my life. Just never gets old, unlimited replay value. The new civs are great, but there's something about the original that makes it special to me. Nostalgia I suppose.
In 1993 I was swapping between playing Doom and Civ (wreaking havoc in one world and creating everything in the other). I had a 3rd shift job and would often come home with breakfast around 7:30am - fire up Civ and play. I'd look at the clock later and see that it was 10:45pm...15 minutes to go back to work... guess I won't be sleeping again.
That nostalgia.
It fills my heart with joy every time I see one of those Boxes from early games.
The promising screenshots, the nice box design. And the nice manual that waits for you inside the box.
As the DVD Area came with those plasic cases, it was just not the same anymore.
Since we have that, I jumped over to steam instead.
Oh wait the video was about civ here.
Well not much to say there, everyone who played it back in time fell in love with it, end of the story.
I nearly failed my uni courses because of this game...
Same thing for me on Civilization 5! :3
KrimsonVagus probably civ 6 for me!
KrimsonVagus probably civ 6 for me!
Oh boy, when civ 6 comes out, we're all gonna be college dropouts! LOL
KrimsonVagus
i dont think so ;) 5 seems better then the new space civ..
So much nostalgiam.
Dude, LGR, your channel is like the capital city of Nostalgialand.
I come here when i gotta get my FIX MAN.
Me and my brother loved this game and all the other civ games. I got called a war mongerer and nuked by Ghandi twice lmfao.
"Just one more turn"
15 hours later....
this game was the first time as a young lad, having begun playing on a saturday night, thinking "what's that light?" before realizing it was dawn and i needed to go to bed lol
5:54 Wow, that's some Militia you got there(TWO Cavalries and a Legion all killed by one Militia)!
I once had a battleship in late game killed by a defending militia in original Civ.
battleship with like 99 attack....HOW??!
@@schalkespringer They kind of fixed that issue by implementing hit points in Civ II. I really liked the way Civ V handled combat best though.
@@schalkespringer I remember losing a bomber to a phalanx. Guess they could throw their long spears really well.
@@pabloliva87 I just played a game in which a lone knight beat three of my tanks
@@JN-hs5xl A winged hussar, obviously.
As a kid I discovered that if you pressed enter at a specific point in the start sequence you would begin with 2 settlers. That was sweet!
2022, I discovered Civ2 and I am partially hooked, playing on and off. Hell, stayed up until 6 AM starting a new game every hour or two. Holy sticks is it addicting
It's such an awesome game with its multimedia content and such.
Loving your channel! Thanks for all the hard work.
Isn't this the game that had one guy - over a course of several years - create an unsolvable nuclear apocalyptic society that was a nightmare to get out of?
+MrColuber I believe that was Civ II!
+MrColuber reddit.com/r/theeternalwar
+Lazy Game Reviews I'd love to see you do a review on every entry of the series.
I beleave this was civ 2
+Hans Geboers yep, that is indeed correct
Used to play those old games a lot in the past because the PC we had at home back then was terrible at running normal games. But over time I ended up enjoying those old games from 80s and 90s. So yeah good nostalgia for me👍👍👍
"Farthole builds MarketPlace."
...God damn it, I laughed.
I can only find one review for Civ? That's nuts! Well done on covering this classic.
I wonder if Clint has ever thought about doing a review or played Alpha Centari?
One of my favorite games of all time
I frequent CivFanatics, generally regarded as THE place to go for Civilization fans. I must say that Civ IV was the last decent title in the series, everything else after that has been lackluster.
From time to time I play Civ IV with normal settings, but on a hard difficulty (Immortal/Diety). There is a guy here on UA-cam I watch who plays Diety on a regular basis. The standard settings, normal map with six other civilizations to compete against, nothing special. Truly what keeps me coming back is the challenge to the game, you actually have to have a bit of skill to play on Diety. I learn more from those who play on high difficulties compared to those who play on low difficulties.
Doesn't matter to me how big the map is, usually a 14,000 tile map suits me just fine. Unfortunately Civ IV was slow to play at the time it was released, and today's high end computers still have a tough time keeping it smooth in the late game. Especially if you were on a Huge map with 17 other Civs, moving around hundreds of military units while micromanaging all your cities and workers.
What you're asking for is more along the lines of Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall. That was TOO BIG.
Im Caj Civ V was awesome. I agree Civ IV was decent but alot of problems were fixed in the next title.
i loved editing the open text scrawl to crack my brother up when he'd come visit. i'd always spice it up with family references and such to make em giggle
Wakes up one morning and decides to play civ looks at clock 8 AM looks at clock after a few turns looks at clock with his eyes being really tired 2 AM says to himself just one more turn collapses on keyboard later on from exhaustion after 2 days playing civ
I miss this game! I've downloaded the dosbox version and will play it later! Thanks LGR
Explore. Expand, Exploit, and..wait a sec *Pulls in Dalek*EXTERMINATE
Ermegerd! That's Hardwar in the background! I played that game so much as a kid. What a nostalgia trip. :3
LGR, please do a Sid Meier's Civilization Series Retrospective like you did with the Duke Nukem & SimCity videos a year ago.
Remember playing this. One of the most epic games every made.
It also set the pace and direction for other simulation games.
Incredible!
"Civilization II" is still the best, as it look simple enough, in between 16bit and 3d, and has same feel as first one.
I think many games was like that. Second one always is just radically improved first one, and starting from third is just trying to reinvent bicycle and "wow effect".
Love that you opened with that music... They don't make games like they used to.
I miss the city view like there was in 1 and 2! I really really like Civ 5, but I always really like to look at my cities.
+Jocelyn Ménard Looking at my cities was the best part, for some reason. ^^
+Outside998 that's (one of many many reasons) why I still prefer Civ IV over V :)
There is no cities view in Civ IV, it is the same than Civ 5. There are many aspect I also prefer in Civ 4, but the the city view is the same...
I'm not going to lie, no matter how hard I try to play the other Civ games, they don't compare to Civ 2 to me. Something about it just makes me want to go back to it no matter what the graphical changes or additions to the newer ones
REVEIW ALL THE CIVILIZATION GAMES!!
He pretty much did.
Bit of trivia about the music and text during the "world building" phase. That was put in place to give the player something to watch and listen to as our 8086-80386 was crunching numbers and actually making the world.
It was realized it would take several minutes to make a world, so they put that in to keep us entertained and not think it had locked up.
Amusing cities' names.
I always love how you get settled with carriages then sit down to research how to build a wheel
HAHA 7:04 I'd be so goddamn pissed
I missed playing games like these! Thanks Clint!
still playing civ 4. what a great series!
I think my Favorite Civ game was the Civ 2 Test of time. I loved the Fantasy Scenario so much.
You should try the Warhammer mod for Civ3, if you haven't already.
LGR! What are you thoughts on Civ: Beyond Earth?
It's weird for me to think that this was my first Civ Game, because i don't was even born when this came out, and this video was the First time I heard about Civilization, and this open my mind to the awesome past of the video games. In fact, This whole channel let me discover old pieces of tech and games that I will not be able to find in my own.
Thanks you LGR, for creating this obsecion with old Games, Tech, and everything in between! :D
6:51 Farthole builds Colossus.
I love that you show the original box and what was/Is inside of it
This was the best game ever
Neat video. I've worked with Sid's wife on homeless outreach over the years in Baltimore county. He is super nice, and has a wonderful family.
I find the lack of mentioning the nuke happy ghandy disturbing...
To the favorites!I know it's been reviewed a thousand times before, but I always appreciate the LGR treatment.
Story:The Amiga version took over 10 minutes to create a new world,my dad would blast the stereo in the basement so he could do other things and know the game was ready when the music stopped.Epic intro music on the Amiga.
MicroProse knew how to program the Amiga, usually making it the best version.Even in the VGA era,Amiga users would not be jealous with a MicroProse game.
I've never played Civ I, but along the years I've accumulated about 500 hours on Civ III... LOL!
Nice review. I have such good memories of the game... playing this with 286 and monochrome display. Sounds were "great" even with PC squeaker. And only many years later I noticed who they based the picture of the guy presenting the discoveries on.
I miss the palace & city overview.
Played this game a lot on the Amiga 500. It had better sounds and graphics than the PC's, one could afford. Brought back good memories of my brother and I figuring out how to win the game. Thanks for sharing.
You're so silly. This game never existed. Life really only began with Civ 2.
Shun the nonbeliever!
After watching LGR for almost a year, *checks calendar* oh wait.
It's only been a day
Aww, yes, the storied town of Farthole only a few kilometers down the road from Daggerfall. It's settled, I'm naming all my towns from now on.
This is one of my top favorite episode of LGR.
Civilization is one of my favorite game series I've ever played & this episode really tells how fun this game can be.
Every time I watch this episode I'll get happy & cheerful.
Also it makes me want to put this game on & start playing it.
Good job!
You really can make awsome game even awsomer. YEAH!
:D
Oh, so, Civ hasn't changed in 25 years.
anjetto1 The graphics got better... ;)
The AI is still just as dumb, though.
This was absolute Gold in 1990s I was 13 and had it on the amiga, Just brilliant :) Many hours spent on this along with Railroad Tycoon and Colonization.
anyone watching in 2019?
I played this game more than any other DOS game... I kept comming back to it for years. When Colonization came out, I still went back to Civ :)
Farthole builds colossus. 😱
Hexen!! That was basically the very first video game I ever remember playing oh my gosh, I know it wasn't really developed for 4-5 year olds but man I loved it. I know it doesn't have to do with the video necessarily but seeing that really hit me with massive nostalgia!
