The restoration of the bench is awesome. You did a fantastic job!
Love how you just tell what you are doing, no dramatic embellishment! Nice job, the color is almost always lighter on blond wood.
Thank you Annette!
For removing rust I would recommend using a corded power drill and wire brush wheels . I got a thorough clean metal surface . But I had a lot more rust . Use small and large head and various wheel type ones . Then I washed with water based Turps , hosed it down and when dry used Rustoleum Primer in a spray can . You were lucky your bolts could undo . Mine were severly corroded and had to use a Grinder
thanks Rusty. I will try this next time
Great redo i just recently got a bench like that from someone who wanted to dump it and stripped it gonna copy what you did with this one beautiful
Awesome!
Flat black was the right choice of colour. Looks really nice
The finished build looks great - aren't you worried that you stained and finished the wood - but the wood where you drilled the holes is not finished and the weather will get to the wood and cause rot?
thanks for checking out the video Rodney. The bench is now on a back porch instead of directly in the weather. i also put a bit of urethane in the screw holes to help protect just in case.
Amazing work!
thank you brother
Great video! I’m getting ready to restore one just like this. You explained everything very well and the music was calm. Some videos have music that is so distracting.
Great work as usual brosef!
thanks bro
Another great video!
appreciate it bro
Cole does it again! Great work brother
thanks Derrick!
Nice work, now I know how to restore it 👍🏻
Thank you Iris!
Great work, well done!
😍😍 beautiful!!
thanks babe
Good job
Thank You Trisha!
Forgot the support brackets on the bottom, its bending
i didnt forget it i just hadnt put it on yet when i sat on it for the video. Thanks for watching!
I have the same exact bench do you have any information on it like when are we’re it’s made Thanks great work btw
How was the paint finish compared to spray paint? No problem not using a primer?
I use leaf blower to clean my work space too / LOL
hahaha best way when you dont have prograde dust extraction everywhere.
Would the Urethane that you used, would it still be ok for outside? Or would you recommend something else? Thanks!
I did my back rest in John Deere green!
Hahaha that's awesome!
suggest using galvanized bolts. is pine strong enough? I've used Douglas fir.
i believe pine is fine as long as the boards are wide enough
I have sort of the same bench, just a different back (picked up the other day). The problem is the wood wasn’t there anymore so I have no template. Do you by chance know the dimensions of the slats for the bench and back pieces? The bench looks terrific!
look at clip spacing, then allow a small gap.
Im sorry i do not but i believe they are roughly 3 inch wide
Also, would have used a primer and spray paint rather than only rustoleum brush.
Why not use spray paint?
What bit do you use to make the holes in the wood for the bolts? Thanks
Hey Dan, he used a countersink drill bit first which not only gives you a pilot hole but bores out the width for the head of whatever hardware you choose to sit at your desired depth. He then finished It up with a twist bit at the same diameter of his hardware.
Wouldn’t you want to drill all the holes before finishing?
I added some finish to the holes after the fact, but yeah you're not wrong
I’m about to do a similar bench, is there a reason the corners for the back aren’t mitered? Every vid Iv found has them butt joined.
I would think that you could miter the corners, but I just mimicked the way it was.
@@Wengelsworkshop thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate it.
I have the wrought iron ends. any idea what I could do for the metal suppports. I got cedar and it feel so flexible like ti would snap. none of the supports were with it when I got it
I used a 1" wide metal strap diagonally.
Yes Carl is right!
What specific paint did you use?
Oil based Rust-Oleum. I think flat black
Finally a video with fucking talking
Lol hopefully that's a good thing
@@Wengelsworkshop yes I really enjoyed it. Lol sorry for the profanity
he just grabbed the public bench and walked away
Lol
Excellent finished product however used very poor technique with table saw and router.
this was a while ago i have been trying to improve on my safety.
how much weight can one of these bench hold?
depends on the wood used. traditionally Douglas fir was used; lasted for decades. most failures at bolt holes. so treat the drilled holes and use galvanized bolts.
