    Hi Cy, I have six pairs of the cast Iron seat / bench parts, I have repainted all of them and used two sets to make a chair and a bench for two of my friends. The others are waiting for someone to see them and ask me to make them a seat or bench. It is so nice to see someone filming deer rather than running indoors to get a gun and then telling everyone how cleaver they were. I know you are not like them and can enjoy nature without wanting to kill it.

      We love having the deer visiting us, we have turkeys, and jack rabbits too. Now a lot of birds come to the feeder and they are fun to watch too.
      That is neat that you have made chairs as well as benches with the cast iron parts!!!!

    Turned out GREAT Cy! It will be sturdier with the thicker boards. Looks beautiful! I just love taking something that has seen better days and bringing new life to it. I've restored 2 benches. They are fun projects.

    Thank you for posting this. I bought one of these benches 20 years ago from the Berkeley Forge & Foundry store. The original color of the iron was silver and was supposed to Patina. It kinda didn't anyway, my boards have not rotted so I might try and just stain them.

      Wow neat!!!! You've had it for 20‭ years, thats awesome! I see them all over the place now, there are so many different styles. Can you patina it up yourself? I really love mine and I would love to restore another!

    My brother had a bench like that I restored earlier this year. I came out at beautiful. Great project. I saw a bench like it in the neighborhood that was in terrible shape and I tried to buy it from the woman. She doesn't want to sell it, so I keep thinking just doing the rehab for free because they come out so good. Five bucks is a steal.

    I did a similar project a few years ago, My eccentric uncle sat on a bench, on the main street, of his home town. Someone set it on fire so the town gave him the remains so he could restore it. A life long procrastinator, he never did. I brought it home and restored it although my wife gave me a stern lecture about bringing home junk It still has a permanent spot on our front deck.

    • @CysCorner

    I have always wondered if it would be worth it to restore one of these benches whenever I would see one in bad shape. It seems like it really is worth it after all. You did great work on this bench. I like your choice to go with cedar.

    • @CysCorner
      @CysCorner  4 роки тому

      Hey Jeremy!!! I suppose if you can pick one up for cheap like I did. The cedar cost $85 so with the cost of the paint and varnish it is a nice looking bench for under $100. And nothing beats having fixed it yourself! You should do it!!! So good to hear from you :)

    Great work Cy, bench looks great, an absolute steal at $5. I’m glad none of those cast iron pieces broke, you need to be a bit careful about slamming those down, cast iron can be quite brittle. Oh and to avoid scratches on the fasteners a nylon hammer is great.

    • @CysCorner
      @CysCorner  4 роки тому

      Ohhh, thanks for pointing that out. I didn't think about the iron being brittle but I can see that it could. A nylon hammer, anotheer great tip, but I would need a nylon nail punch!

    • @wich1
      @wich1 4 роки тому +1

      @@CysCorner heh, don’t think I ever saw a nylon punch. There are brass ones though, they won’t mar steel as quickly.

    • @CysCorner
      @CysCorner  4 роки тому

      @@wich1 so there's an opportunity! To make nylon punches! Wonder if they wouldn't be strong enough.....maybe just a nylon tip to it!

    I baught a product recently for use with spray/rattle cans, basically a plastic trigger that clips on to the can and it makes using them so much easier - I imagine your finger got pretty tired spraying up all that cast iron!!
    I got mine off Amazon for about £8 but I imagine it will be around the same price in USD - it was a US made product so, you'd think it would be cheaper over there. Anyway, great video and that cedar came out beautifully.

    Nice job! What do you think about using a penetrating oil like Watco exterior wood first, then doing any staining and putting spar poly protectant at the end? Also, for folks who lack your machinery firepower, 4' stair treads can be ripped to desired widths. The pine ones are crap, but oak ($3x) looks pretty good.

    • @CysCorner
      @CysCorner  3 роки тому

    Avoid wire brush particles and sandblast.
    Seems to me, wooden slats for back support is more comfortable than cast iron?

    • @CysCorner
      @CysCorner  Рік тому

      Sandblasting would be much better!
      Wooden back support would be more comfy. With this bench I found the wood was a little too thick. It is uncomfortable because it sticks out from the cast iron. The cast iron alone would be more comfy than the situation it is in now. But ultimately wood would feel the most comfy! But the cast iron looks so cool!

  • @kerryg4119
    @kerryg4119 4 роки тому

    The cedar looks much better than oak. I love the knots in it. Great choice of finish coat over the wood. Ok...you didn't put a verse on it. What would you choose if you did?

    • @CysCorner
      @CysCorner  4 роки тому +2

      The plan was to engrave a verse on the back side of that little brass piece but when I tried it it didn't look so good. So I cleaned the other side and put that on. But I was told to use a dremel to engrave and I am going to try that! If I can make it look good then the little plaque on the bench will be Matthew 11:28, Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Going to try it today!!!!

    • @CysCorner
      @CysCorner  10 місяців тому

      Hello, that is a tough question. It may depend on how much restoration is to be done, whether it only needs a new finish or replaced wood/parts. Also the cost of labor could be a wide range from person to person. Sorry I dont have a great answer for you!
