    I went down the same road with turning the acoustic kick drum. I also ended up with the KD-A22. You are correct with the outstanding triggering and feel. I have a UFO kick trigger with a 3ply head on another kick.........that works pretty darn well, but the KD-A22 edges that out

    Great video, Justin! For our kick trigger, I bought a cone and piezo then googled an image of what the KD-140 looks like inside and built a plate that I mounted inside a cheap kick drum with some foam. Instant Roland kick! Works great...

    @65drums a great very cost effective option for preventing your hi hat rod from spinning. Head to home depot with the rod and grab a locking washer and two matching nuts. Screw them higher up on the threads. Screw down your rod and then tighten the lock washer and the two nuts down. Most commonly its a 7mm nut you need but, JIC bring the rod with you. Cost you a few bucks at most, cheaper than a pack of thread lock. This is the exact setup axis pedals use to keep their spring's in place.Also, if your using the threadlocker over time it will backout. If you do decide to use it make sure to not use the hi-hat for 24 hours for the thread locker to cure. I use it for pocket knives and any vibrations before the liquid has time to set will disturb the bond and just gunk up your threads.

    For the rotating top hi-hat - I use a Gear Tie (It's a section of wire coated with rubber about 12" long) I twist one end around the jack coming out of the cymbal and twist the other end around the hi-hat base/stand forming kind of a C shape. It is flexible so the cymbal can move but firm enough to keep the cymbal in place. Once attached just twist your cymbal to the desired position and that's it. My hi-hat hasn't moved since I've done it.

    Love Your Vid's, I am a serious follower. . . . Thanks for all your awesome info, I am wondering your thoughts on tm-6 from Roland and also the kt-10? I rented a td17 kvs, arrived at a gig out of town and the kick did not work. The kd-10 trigger worked but the cable running to it did not. I had to pull the tom cable and ran that all night. I didn't know how to switch the tom to a kick sound. Terrible gig that turned out to be a great show in-spite of all the issues. Thanks for your help in advance, Ken

    Love your channel Justin without a doubt you've been really helpful regarding edrum kits and my plans on converting a kit!
    If you have time could you please tell me your thought about my initial plan on a converted edrums kit,
    I am currently thinking about
    -R drums rts spider trigger system for the snare.
    -jobecky side-mounted triggers for all 3 toms
    -havent decided for the kick drum yet but thinking about the dd drum redshot(this is where I really need your opinion)
    -and drum tec design mesh heads for all shells with of course roland cymbals on a cheap but good looking acoustic kit.
    what are your thoughts and really love your channel, keep up the good work!

    For the spinning hi hat rods: take the top rod to the hardware store and find a nut that fits it. Install nut onto top rod, screw rod into base rod and then tighten nut against bottom receiver. Or use Loctite!!

    Another great one! I have a question - What are your thoughts on how soon we will start seeing drum VSTs that runs off of an iPad or Android tablet? Are the tablets powerful enough for this? And how likely are we to start seeing audio/MIDI interfaces that connect to iPads and tables so that this is even possible?

    Love your stuff, I am learning so much. I have a bit of a convoluted question, hopefully you can understand. I am a newbe drummer, less then a year. I have an old Yamaha’s DTX 500 I think. I bought it from a friend who’s son gave up drums. I love the Roland VAD 506, except the $6,000 Canadian price tag. I’m thinking of making a hybrid set. I found an old Orbiton kit. It has everything plus it is red. The best sounding drum kits are red. LOL. I like the Roland TD17 SKX module. I can pick one up on eBay for about $730 CDN, or $850 CDN from a drum store. But I was thinking on starting by cannibalism my DTX kit for the module and cymbals. I’ve found a set of UKS Audio 2 ply mesh pads and a Red Shot Trigger pack of triggers. If I cannibals I get this done probably within two weeks for around $700.00 CDN. But, here is the million dollar question, is it all compatible? I realize it will not be a VAD 506, and it will only be as strong as the module. But if I like I can buy the Roland TD17 module and have a hybrid kit pretty similar to a Roland TD17 SKX. If I don’t like I can convert back. Your thoughts please.

    Hey Justin,
    Is there any advantage to having a drum module capable of positional sensing if it is being used to trigger sounds in a VST? For that matter, is there any advantage any drum module has over another once MIDI comes into play other than the number of inputs and latencey?
    Keep up the great work!

    Thank you for this! Currenly I do some gigging with my TD11 and find the 'tower' gives no stage presence, so I was kicking around the options of the KDA22, buying a cheap kick and coverting it to a mesh/trigger setup, or even just setting up a dummy kick to sit in front of the kick 'tower'.

    Hey Justin, referring to your kda220 drum tech Mesh head swap. What about using a Drum-tec(design or real feel) head on a Roland kd200 and cutting a hole and mounting the kd200 trigger in a mesh head instead of the nylon to keep the factory trigger? The mesh head would be quieter than the factory nylon head but would it withstand the holes cut into it ?

  • @bicross87
    @bicross87 5 років тому

    Hey Justin.
    To avoid the rotation of the Hi-hat stand Rod, you can simply use some Teflon tape (Normally used to leak-proof water pipe joint). That's easy to remove or replace, it doesn't stick to the metal so it doesn't make a mess when you remove it, and if you put enough of it on the thread, it will be pretty hard to unscrew by itself :)
    hope it helps !
    Great content by the way !

    I’m struggling with buying the KD-180 or building my own. I don’t love putting in a foam trigger bridge setup because of foam issues with time. Anybody tried the Pearl TruTrack? I’m thinking how bad could it be? It’s cheap-ish, easy, and I don’t have to buy an expensive mesh head either...I’d love to buy a $150 drum and be done with the whole thing for another $100-$150, which is tough with a good mesh head and a good internal trigger.

    owning the kd-a22 I will say its rather loud, just as loud as a heavily muffed normal kick drum. Worst for me was it didnt fit a trick pro-v1 big foot pedal. The metal hoop is shallow and scalloped. So it didnt fit my pedal well and is as loud as a regular drum. I decided to go back to my standard bass drum with muffing and an acoustic trigger. I play all metal anyways so its always triggered. Comparing the kda22 to my Roland Kd-140 I like the KD140 better as well. Hooked up to a Td50. Save your money and just use a regular kick and lots of pillows. It will be quieter, feel better, trigger great and be cheaper.

    • @manuelgonzalezrubio2070
      @manuelgonzalezrubio2070 5 років тому

      Marco Cruz You could buy an Alesis Surge Mesh kit (around 600), which has relatively big mesh pads for the price, but a low quality module, an Alesis Forge, which has a better module but rubber pads (I think it's a bit cheaper, around 525/550). However, these kits dont have the best modules ever, but for the price they do their job. Imo, I would the forge kit. Hope it helped :D

    • @MCM686
      @MCM686 5 років тому

      Manuel gonzalez rubio thank you it helped a bit I prefer the mesh head over rubber pads but I wonder if this kick towers from the alesis are solid?

    • @manuelgonzalezrubio2070
      @manuelgonzalezrubio2070 5 років тому +1

      Marco Cruz well, Alesis is general is not the most durable company. Ive had a DM6 for around 7 years now and the 2nd year the kick tower died. However, I got it fixed for around 20 bucks and it has been working flawlessly since then. So, if you are really concerned about durability, you should take these things into account. However, all in all I think that in this price Alesis is unbeatable

    • @MCM686
      @MCM686 5 років тому

      Manuel gonzalez rubio you mentioned the module again I wonder in what aspect is not good. I pretty much set my kit sound to standard and I'm happy with it I don't mind if it has 600 sounds and doing nothing with all of them but I'll keep in mind your reply about the kick cause that's my concerned at the moment.

    • @manuelgonzalezrubio2070
      @manuelgonzalezrubio2070 5 років тому

      Marco Cruz Well, modules are good or not depending on several factors, the most important and noticeable of them being the sound quality. The other ones are about the number of inputs and the degree to which you can tweak the sounds in order to make them more personal and good-sounding. All in all, I say the forge module is better due to the sounds being of a higher quality and having more options to make your own sounds
