New Birthday Song | Ride the Cyclone Animatic (Read Description)

- Hey everyone. After debating over this for some time and talking through with some friends, I think this'll be my last Ride the Cyclone animatic for now. This is something I'm not doing lightly, but ultimately what I feel will be best going forward.
When I posted that first RTC video, I wasn't unaware of the issues the musical had. I explained it to anyone I reccomended the musical to, with the hopes that in recent productions they'd change. Mccarter, before the information about how Yannick was treated came out, seemed like a step in the right direction too.
But with the recent script changes at hand, I'm not sure how I feel about continuing the project right now. This is not necessarily a stance on what other people should feel about the musical, but I feel this is the right option for myself. Ride the Cyclone has a complicated future, and I don't want to contribute to the publicity of a musical that'll continue to sideline disabled actors.
Furthermore, I feel that RTC has pushed me to a point where I would be putting off my own passion projects in the hopes of maintaining the support that the initial videos garnered. I'm thankful, immensely, for the support, but I want to be able to have this channel find its own footing without the reliance on a single musical.
Will I come back and finish this show? Who knows. I'm going to wait out and see how the creative team behind it goes forward with these changes. I apologize for anyone excited for the last two songs, trust me, originally I was thrilled. But I don't want to work on them again until I know my feelings about them are positive.
More musical content will be put out, more original character content will be as well. I hope you all will stick around as we navigate this channel into new waters.

Of course, it wouldn't be right for me to just ignore everything that's been talked about from this entire ordeal. Inclusivity and representation in the theatre industry is something I feel strongly about as a POC, so it'd be hypocritical to not also be listening to the voices of disabled fans & actors y'know?

It's really unfortunate that ablebodied voices are even valued more at all. I'm glad to do my part in making sure the opinions of disabled people are the ones that get amplified, but it's frustrating that no matter what group, it's the voices of people outside it that'll be valued just for regurgitating what people inside these groups have already been saying.
Nonetheless, I wish you the best of luck in your future career. I am 100% sure you're going to kill it, and hopefully the work done now will mean that the theatre community will become a more inclusive place where cases like these aren't so common.

@@gardenagnostic The new script thing actually is preventing ableism!! The original script is still available for licensing and it is preferred to be used!! But the new script was written so ableism could be stopped.

AWW THIS IS SO ADORABLE I LOVE IT SM! But yeah I’m disappointed abt the new controversies surrounding RTC because I love and adore each of the characters and the songs sm 😭. Hopefully it gets better in the future, because that’s all I can rely on at this point.
I hope that it gets better too, but with the response we've been getting from the team behind it, I'm finding it hard to remain optimistic right now. However, thanks for watching

yeah I understand why, tbh I was so excited for sugar cloud but I feel the same way as you towards what is happening rn with RTC. Though this musical will always have a special place in my heart no doubt the script changes is so uneccessary to begin with the show is getting shorter alr and they made a big change.
I still adore RTC but only the productions before mccarter and blue ridge as the others stood true with the material.
but i still support the marvelous actors and actresses within those productions, I absolutely love Katerina from mccarter and yasmin from blue ridge
i hope the fans dont flack the performers but the production itself.

Respect your decision 100%. Even if you choose not to continue with this series later, I feel this is a cute and satisfying conclusion.
I was wondering how you would tackle this song, since the concept album (that's what Richmond and Maxwell say the cast recording is, I guess it's a little easier than World Premiere Cast Recording) cuts the scene following this song out, but I think this is a good balance of the scene and the song. I remember kind of dislking Karnak having the "How do we know it's _not_ your birthday." line when I first listened to the song on the concept album, but I like how it was done here!
In terms of animation, the lighting is simple but I love it! The fire's light making everyone glow a little is such a nice effect! I also love Jane blowing out her candles, rather than Constance blowing it out for her since Jane tries to touch the flame.
Thank you so much for creating these animatics. We've had a great run, and I immensely appreciate how much all of your animatics improve my day. Something about your art style is just so sweet and happy and I can't help but smile when I look at it. You have all of my support for your future work and I'm looking forward to seeing non-RTC related content! I'm sure it will be just as great, if not, even better!

Thank you so much for your comment, I really do appreciate every one you leave on these animatics. The way the song was handled in the cast album was honestly a frustration of mine as well, so this was my best attempt at coming up with something that tells an actual story in a single video, while still maintaining the simplicity that brings a charm to the number. Cannot wait to see any future analysis you comment on my upcoming videos :0)

I know I'm to this video but thank you for both bringing light to the many issues in Ride The Cyclone and confronting the issue of fans being critical of the media they enjoy. Watching your animatics has helped me feel more clear about the controversy and ableism surrounding the musical and allowing me to acknowledge it and make me think instead of my mind just dismissing the mistreatment of disabled actors so I can listen to my favorite musical.

Ik it's been a year, but i wanted to thank you for bringing light to the problems of this show. I found the album suggested to me a thew weeks ago and listed to it and like everything it snitched to youtube i was enjoying it and I was extremely disheartened to see what they did to the disabled characters TLDR; Ty i understand why you stopped
I'm glad my words managed to be informative for you ^^ I believe it's important to remain critical of the art you enjoy, and I always want to bring that energy to this channel

Is the disability issue just limited to the McCarter theatre? Or does the entire musical have an issue (like ricky losing his disability after the first song in the most wide-released version)
The issue I'm talking about in the description has to do with a recent script change that was integrated around the Blue Bridge production, but now applies to the script that's being licensed, therefore all future productions of RTC. Ricky no longer has mobility aids at all, and being nonverbal is now stated to be due to a traumatic incident, rather than his preexisting conditions. Coupled with lines like "I could always talk, you just weren't ready to hear what I had to say", it makes for an overall very iffy experience.
This is, of course, compounded with issues in previous productions that you've mentioned already, like the mistreatment of disabled actors, or the fact Ricky's disability was always handled in a less than ideal way.

@@_z_873 Ah, trust me, I'm a little sad too, but it's definitely for the best, I assure you. The momentum of this project had been wearing thin anyways, the constant mishandling on the part of creatives was totally demoralizing, not to mention a part of me that was partially burnt out from all the animatics these past months. Even if I did continue, I'm afraid it wouldn't have been the work that this channel deserves.
I might go ahead and release some pre production work I had done, so there's atleast snippets for people that are hardcore viewers of the channel. (Definitely more reassuring to me than going ahead and doing the animatics fully. I've had some people say they got into the show after watching these and I do not wanna be driving that publicity rn, yknow?)

@@twist_ending7545 Some mute fans have stated how it plays into stereotypes of people who deal with the condition being able to talk and just choosing not to-which is untrue and really harmful to be spreading.
Say what you will about Ocean being awful, and you'll probably be valid.
But her deciding to write a new song for Penny/Jane was absolutely wholesome. That was her best moment.

That sounds like such a lovely video idea! It's always nice to see songs applied in a different context and take on a new meaning. I don't think I've seen anyone with a similar idea yet, and honestly I'd encourage you to go for it in making that yourself!

It's actually not too difficult once you give it a shot! There's tons of free drawing programs & editing resources out there, and many artists on here have uploaded step-by-step tutorials on making animatics. Plus, if you're not artistically inclined, you can always achieve your vision through an edit/amv-an edited together compilation of different clips from the musical-which just requires an editing software

The short of it is essentially just script changes removing Ricky using mobility aids entirely-the script is freely available online so you can look for yourself. If you want something more in depth, Yannick-Robin Eike Mirko (Ricky in the Mccarter Production) has been on tumblr reblogging a lot of posts concerning everything that's been going on-their blog is adandelioninspring, and its linked on their website (yannickmirko.com)
