I sold mine last year and got a Focus RS. I have to say I preferred the Honda. The RS is bouncy, torque steers, fidgety and doesn't feel as fast as the HP figure suggests. The front end of the Type R is way more planted imo.
That's really interesting to hear. The RS has lots of fans and for most of them can do no wrong (and most of those fans haven't driven one !). There is no doubt the RS is fast but for me the Type R was a more engaging drive and yes the front end is amazing !
I've also heard some bad things about the RS, feels heavy due to AWD, high seat position... I am leaning towards getting the R.... but then again I had an FN2 and loved it.
The MK3 RS is just a traffic light dragster. Despite the AWD system, it's not as quick around corners at the Type R or Megane RS- extra 200kg heavier than the Honda as well. It's actually slower from a rolling start than the Type R, I've seen quite a few videos of the Honda leaving it for dead and I had a bloke in an RS struggling to keep up with mine in summer last year. Winter/ wet weather though, that's where the RS Focus is way better. I do find myself taking it extra easy in the Type R in non-ideal conditions. Those Conti's don't help either!
I bought an fk2 a few months back. I have done a few thousand miles in it since and have to say I've wanted a tyre r for 20 years buy couldn't afford the ek9 I so badly wanted. Anyway I bout an ek4 which was an absolute blast to drive the fk2 is hands down a faster car but I think the ek was more fun for one reason. The ek u could drive hard for hours it was so predictable in its handling. The fk2 is so fast and corners so well u just can't get near the cars capability on a public road. U can have a blast for a minute or 2 then you realise ur flying and car hasn't once twitched in the slightest and u need to slow the hell down. Great video by the way. Thanks
Enjoying this Hot Hatch series. I think a lot of us came from that 80's hot hatch era and still have a big interest in these cars. I'm getting the feeling you'd have one of these over the Focus.
I wasnt too keen when I seen in on the internet, but seeing it in its flesh at the Honda Showroom, wow I have fallen in love with it, especially in that blue colour, and like all the other colours too.
Fab video mate, we'll done. Drove one a week ago at Honda Wolverhampton. Fantastic car, drove one in a blue, car stays on the road like its got glue stuck on the tyres. I have always had audi Quattro's and this car blew me away. Was on offer for £23k with 3,000 miles on it as bought a CRV and Honda Civic from them. Also would like to mention that Honda dealerships are thousand times better than any Audi or Vw dealerships I have dealt with over the last 22 years.
Petrol Ped Only thing was Mrs and family didn't let me buy it as bought CRV ex and Civic ex plus bought a Audi S4 only last year. Will have to wait till next year. But it is either the Civic or another Audi high performance car.
I'm Honda through and through I currently own a 05 ep3 civic type r and a 00 accord type r These type r are great cars the older vtec engines are epic Driven the new one and I loved it
Wow...a Type R mega fan ! I agree about the VTEC, I loved my S2000 and the engine was just sublime ! I had an original Type R drive past me yesterday and it looked so small and nimble, I'd love to drive one one day.
Just bought a 17 1 litre engine and it's a rocket. The suspension and handling is far better than previous models. My last was the 8th generation which had the magic seat's. Pity there not in this thought!
Finally seen my first one just a few weeks ago on the high way of the 2017 or newer ones. He and I were both going about 105mph. I was in my v8 Volvo XC90 and he seemed impressed I was keeping up with him lol. Great review Sir Pete can’t believe I missed this video tell now!
I'm still in love what a car I own the old ep3 the next best civic I can bring myself to part with it yes it has 123,000 on the clock but she's a go,er
have bought this car last year in grey. Best choice of all my life. Had an a6 quattro before (have 46 years old). people over 50 loves it and of course under. I have nearly 20000 km now and still enjoying it a lot. sometimes I drive more than 13 hours a day with it and I am far less tired than with my previous a6. I can load everything I want in it and drive my daughter to her school. I was just behind an porsche 911 last time and just give up because we reached a too high speed for the open road. All this for just 37500 euros. My first honda. I will have difficulties to find another car as enjoyable than this one. Maybe the alfa romeo giulia quadrifoglio. Evrery other car (rs, golf, audi, mercedes) loolks ridiculously boring compared to this one. A sub sti, that's an ugly and ridiculous car when you see its performance and its look.
I've driven the 2017 Civic 1.5 Sport and it is as good to drive as the current Type R (video coming next Friday !). New new Type R is going to be VERY good :-)
Already signed contract for the new Type-R in CW. Honda Norway said I'll be the first one to get a white one when they'll come in late Q3 this year. So looking forward to it!
Interesting how the new 2017 CTR has addressed a couple of the reviewers issues with this car. Ie, it will now have 3 driving modes and it will also have rev-matching. Great review btw!
Makes a Focus RS look subtle. Seems to be aimed more at the younger market who unfortunately may not be able to afford the running costs even if they could stretch to the purchase price. An interesting series Ped.
Another top quality video Ped. keep em coming. Powerful front wheel drive cars have been around for several years. I have a 1997 Fiat Coupe 2 litre 20 valve turbo. At the time they were the fastest production front wheel drive cars with 220bhp and top speed of 155 mph. FC Performance in Bristol have modified these cars up to 500bhp.
loving this series Pete.... im building up my dream hatch as you go through the different manufacturers. That black one in the showroom looked very nice. 👍
Thanks Ian. It would be cool to take the best bits from each of them. You'd have the gearbox from this one...it was lovely ! The Black Series GT in the showroom was a limited edition and it was VERY nice !
Love your hot hatch reviews!!! I have a FK2 and love how raw it is when on it (+R). Looking forward to your review of a facelift RS3 as interested to compare against the 2015 model which I also have. Keep em coming!!!!!!!
Tempted to trade in my 2016 Golf R for the US version, the looks are def over the top, but my Golf R is so boring idk much longer I'll be able to last in it. Great car, very refined, more so than anything I've owned personally, but I just find it to be a snoozefest as a daily driver. Of course coming from a stage 2 wrx with the uel header rumble probably has something to do with that.
Selling my 2013 Golf TDI (thanks emissions scandal) back to VW and picking one of these up in the spring and I cant wait! Owned a 2007 Civic Si and I miss it so much, hoping this brings back that feeling and then some
Nice, I had a fg2 as well with bolt-ons as well .. my first manual car, even without the torque it was more fun to drive than my Golf R .. just goes to show power isnt everything. I even find the new brz with performance package to be pretty appealing but have yet to test drive one.
Not sure about this one Peter, it looks super agressive and like you I agree that a true hot-hatch should look that way, all spoilers and carbon and stuff, in black it was like a poor man's Batmobile or Stealth fighter truly epic looks. As for the harsh ride quality I couldn't live with that if it was my daily car and I think this is where this car falls down. It is meant to be a car to able to live with daily and have all the practicallity that is offered by a Civic same as the A45 nad the Focus RS which both acheive these goals whereas the Civic is almost a hot hatch "weekend" car or track day car and for me this sort of defies the idea of a every day hot hatch. Looks alone though I am right with you it's the best so far. Great video yet again and Tasha says she hopes you get someone to lend you an Audi RS3 as that is her favourite car, apart from the Silver Fox of course!!!
You are spot on Rob my friend, as always ! I does feel quite track focussed. It makes the ride quality of the Mini feel like a Rolls Royce Phantom !!!!
I liked your review very much! As an ex-owner of an Mini JCW R56 and owner of the FK2R I can say that the adaptive suspension of the Type R in normal mode is far more comfortable than the standard sports suspension of the JCW! In +R mode it's stiffer, yes. With the adaptive dampers, the superb seats, the great high speed stability, the space inside and the big boot I find the Type R very livable and practical ! :-)
Great insight and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I was mainly driving in +R Mode which made things far more stiff. I didn't mind it but I know a lot of people would find it too much.
I went to That Honda garage and I found the staff so rude I went down to look and possibly purchase the grey one down and the just completely ignored me and wouldn't talk to me cause I was wearing trackie bottoms and a polo shirt . So I just walked out and I said I'll take my money else we're and buy one .... good review by the way mate :)
Cheers thank you and I've test drove one about a year back and now in the market to get one I love the cars it's such a pleasure to drive them and it's crazy how it manages to put all the power down with very little torque steer , I can't honestly wait to get one I'm off to go have a look at one tomorrow :)
It's ok :) and I've been hunting for the right one and I think I've found it so that's were I'm off to tomorrow :) And thank you very much it's my little road legal track toy :) and keep up the good work with the videos :) I would love to do car review videos it would be some much fun I can imagine :)
I really like this car. I was close to getting one. Close call between the RS and this. Just felt the styling was a little too OTT in the end. I still want one though...have been tempted to get a second hand one ;)
Fezza pick up a second hand one there's a few going at a reasonable price. I'm sure they'll hold value well soon as new one lands maybe not as much as your RS but you won't go wrong having both! 😀
It does look as if it was designed by an eleven-year-old. Suspension that's too firm on a damp and bumpy twisty road can be dangerous in my view, it's far easier to make rapid progress with forgiving suspension. I think you did a good job in this review highlighting the positive and few negative aspects. cheers
My mind was set on getting this then I saw the performance of the VXR and the price difference for a 2nd hand /one.When remapped the VXR has a better spec so that made my mind up /mate.Saved some serious cash too ;)
Hi Pedro, The is no doubt about it's a very quick car and it looks ok but after a day behind the wheel with that hard suspension you would feel it to be honest I'm not sold still love the Focus RS for styling. But yet another great review well done fella. Kind Regards, Alan B
Pedro, I'm struggling as to the reason why your views are so low as currently stands at 617 I think you give some very good and honest reviews. Sorry I don't get it. Kind Regards, Alan B
+Alan Butterfield Hi Alan. It's always a mystery to me which do well and which don't. I haven't promoted this video on FB yet which generates a certain amount of interest. Thanks for such a supportive comment and your interest in my channel. I'll get there eventually !
I always back the honest guy and I will continue to support your channel as your not pretending to be someone your not thus buying big expensive cars just to get subs etc. It's ok for some as I like Shmee150 but he is buying cars based on what the viewers want him to buy and drive the problem is sooner or later that will dry up. But Tim is a very clever Business man but you can't put a price on just being honest with the viewers and keeping it real and just buying the car that meets your daily needs. Kind Regards, Alan B
I really want the Golf R and RS3 in the series so I'm currently working on making that happen. It's just hard finding a demonstrator that someone will let me drive !
Great video. I'm on the other side with the Marmite looks of this one, too garish for me. However, it looked a lot of fun to drive and a real gearbox is very attractive. I'd quite fancy it if they did one that looked like a normal Civic. After all LJK Setright always insisted that the Civic was the best car in the world, and he should know.
Will you be doing a review on the new type R? I'm in the position to buy a new car fortunately, I'm stuck between the new type R GT.. focus RS.. and 370z nismo
NathChitt your right I did them both but s3 was a close one but I think I need to get mine mapped as I want to see how well it does against the rs3 I’ve been in touch with tdi they r saying 460bhp is max unless I forge the engine but 460 is more than enuff
Wow what a Marmite car! It really is the complete opposite of the Merc last week but personally I do love the styling! Although I'm getting a real dislike of Manufacturers fitting beautiful Sports seats in the front and almost ignoring the rears! The rears don't need to be non standard but the colours really do need to carry through a little more! I suspect it will be a mare to drive in the wet too but that just adds to the fun! A great review as always 👍🏻
All haters are probaly too old to drive. Anyone who wants to buy this kind of hatch is gonna be young and he is gonna be like this exterior. So shut up all you old guys.
Absolutely. The hanging revs are fully apparent on your vid- it's either a flywheel made of pig iron or naff mapping. They all seem to suffer with it. DC2R about a quarter of a ton lighter & proof you didn't need big BHP numbers for motoring thrills. Modern hot hatches are all bloated by comparison. Fast- yes, but they all seem to have lost that crucial lightweight, chuckable, playful nature the 205GTi, Clio Williams, Mk2 Golf all had. Even the JCW Mini is a bit lardy & too stiffly sprung....
Renaultsport had the record for sometime with the Trophy R then Seat Leon Cupra sub8 then the Honda tyre R beat that time now The Volkswagen Golf clubsport S has the record ! I think Renaultsport will be trying to claim the record back with the new Renaultsport Megane which will be realised within a year or two ? Hot hatches are getting seriously quick !
Mmm if I was 20 again i'd love this car, but im not so I dont. RS still just edging it so far for me, this thing looks ridiculous IMO, and is too compromised to make sense for most I would suggest. Thanks though Pete!
Thanks Nick. This car is certainly getting the most polarised comments so far. LOVE and HATE in equal measure. I knew it would be too much for a lot of you. Don't get me wrong, I love the looks and the drive but I'm not sure I could have one parked outside my house or turn up to a customer meeting in one !!
Great review but personally the design leaves a lot to wish for. I would never drive this thing if I was older then 20 I think. In my opinion it looks absolutely ridiculous.
It is one of the worst, overstyled cars possible on the market. Stick on tat arches that generally don't fitbvery well and loads of awkward bits of styling. It's a mess. A blind man would be able to feel how stupidly styled it is. Dream for brail.
The CTR is not crap but is not good in the wet, it's also inferiorvto the megane and Golf CS on track. The CTR excels nowhere. I think you will find that being awd the Focus is in a different category which ia why it doesn't set track records. The Civic has been outstripped by the Golf Clubsport S as fwd on track but fwd ia a very flawed layout and really is bottom of the pile. The CTR is decent inside although the red seats very garish. I'm far from narrow minded and love all cars from hot hatches from the 80's, U.S Muscle cars and all sorts of supercars but the CTR just looks ridiculous. Being fast is not the be all and end all as I don't live on a track, the RS is far more fun on the road, it simply has a party piece that is currently unmatched in its sector. Also CTR body parts functional? Don't make me laugh.
I sold mine last year and got a Focus RS. I have to say I preferred the Honda. The RS is bouncy, torque steers, fidgety and doesn't feel as fast as the HP figure suggests. The front end of the Type R is way more planted imo.

hmm... and you also ordered a GOLF R right? because you're writing stuff on every forum.

Wow...a Type R mega fan ! I agree about the VTEC, I loved my S2000 and the engine was just sublime !
I had an original Type R drive past me yesterday and it looked so small and nimble, I'd love to drive one one day.
I'm in Essex your more than welcome to come and drive my 05 civic type r
+tumbleweed16 We should sort that out 👍
Just bought a 17 1 litre engine and it's a rocket.
I'm 32 seconds in please don't brake my dreams in the next 18 minutes and 77 seconds I would love to own one even just for a day

i wonder...
in the future i want a type r to.
how much further is honda going with the type r ?

I've got a review of the new 2017 1.5L Civic Sport coming next week...it's bloody excellent !
Makes a Focus RS look subtle. Seems to be aimed more at the younger market who unfortunately may not be able to afford the running costs even if they could stretch to the purchase price. An interesting series Ped.
Thanks Chris. A younger audience or those having a midlife crisis :-)
The intro looks a bit of a mouthful Hendy Honda Hot Hatch, I wonder how many takes that took to get right, for me, at least 15 haha
Quite a few ;-)

Another great video nice one!
+Mossy 1 Cheers
There isn't currently a new RS3 model on sale. The new model is due on sale in the U.K. towards the back end of the year.
I'm talking to Audi about it but they don't have anything I can drive at the moment. I might try a slightly older one.
Nice video man !
Cheers James :-)

awesome review
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it :-)
nice in black .
Very !
hahahah mate went flying 9:05
LOL...Yep :-)
Nice car! Nearly bought one of these :)
I was fab. I could quite easily be tempted !
My mind was set on getting this then I saw the performance of the VXR and the price difference for a 2nd hand /one.When remapped the VXR has a better spec so that made my mind up /mate.Saved some serious cash too ;)
Focus RS knocks out near enough another 50... + mount-tune under Ford Warranty for more HP etc etc... think I'd take the RS.. as nice as this looks!
I'm not saying I disagree with you. Once I've driven as many of them as I can I will decide which one I'd have !
nice!
Cheers Shane, it was indeed :-)

I always back the honest guy and I will continue to support your channel as your not pretending to be someone your not thus buying big expensive cars just to get subs etc. It's ok for some as I like Shmee150 but he is buying cars based on what the viewers want him to buy and drive the problem is sooner or later that will dry up. But Tim is a very clever Business man but you can't put a price on just being honest with the viewers and keeping it real and just buying the car that meets your daily needs. Kind Regards, Alan B
Good review. I have one in polished metal :)
Wow, that sounds awesome !
All fantastic cars but which model depreciates the quickest ?
Great question Wendy. I'm not sure of the answer but I'll try to find out for my summary video once I've driven them all :-)
Great review as per usual. Will you be taking a Golf R or Golf Clubsport out anytime soon????
I really want the Golf R and RS3 in the series so I'm currently working on making that happen. It's just hard finding a demonstrator that someone will let me drive !
the new 10th gen type r has been announced already and you are still reviewing this?
You've clearly never tried to get access to cars to review ! When I arranged to drive this the new version had not been revealed.
As a friend of mine said...you couldn't turn up to a funeral in it !!
I did and it was.... kind of funny! :)
Good review. Where did you get your jacket please ?
Thanks. McLaren Honda F1 website store. Bought at the end of last year in the sale...MEGA bargain !
Will you be doing a review on the new type R? I'm in the position to buy a new car fortunately, I'm stuck between the new type R GT.. focus RS.. and 370z nismo
Yes, but probably not until the end of the summer.
i am curious 0-100 mph time or better yet 0-120mph. Probably faster than most sports cars especially with a top end of 168mph
I'd love to try those but I need to borrow a runway !
Do you live in Portsmouth I'm not that far away
Chichester :-)
When will you drive the new Civic Type R 2017 FK8? :-)
Probably late August early September. I need to wait for my local dealer to get one in as Honda won't give me one directly :-(
I've the same black for daily and frs2 for weekend but i prefer the T5!!!
Franck
France.
Makes a better noise for a start ! Great 2 cars to have though :-)
What do you think of the 2017 TypeR
Only seen pictures, but it looks awesome ! Even more aggressive !
Yes, this TypeR is more aggressive than the last...I'm in Canada and can't wait long enough to get my hands on one.
Good point on the pedal positioning 😡😡 so frustrating
Do u think on a rolling road it’s competition with the likes of golf r or s3 are quicker
Probably a more engaging drive than those two 👍
Chilla Chilla it will beat a golf r rolling but not too sure about a s3 but my bet is it will, all that weight saving for being fwd haha
NathChitt your right I did them both but s3 was a close one but I think I need to get mine mapped as I want to see how well it does against the rs3 I’ve been in touch with tdi they r saying 460bhp is max unless I forge the engine but 460 is more than enuff
The king of hot hatch will and always be the MAZDASPEED 3
The most underrated car.. mazda 3 mps is awesome, and has big potentials..
Only if you happen to come from a completely different planet! Yeuk!
Not a fan then Bill ?! I thought this car would divide opinion.
Great review and i love the looks! I own the 2007 fn2 type r and absolutely love it. Feel free to review mine if you like! Live in reading
How did the Type R compare to the 2020 Mini JCW Clubman you drove?
I'd have the gearbox from the Type R and everything else from the JCW 👍
southampton have a rs3 in now
I have size 9 feet and can heal and toe in this car?
You've got better technique than me then ;-)
haha, nah just 4 months of practice.
That's cheating !!!!!
size 12 here, cant heel toe in alot of cars no room!!! lol my knees hit the dashboard. im super excited for the CTR to come to the US!
All haters are probaly too old to drive. Anyone who wants to buy this kind of hatch is gonna be young and he is gonna be like this exterior. So shut up all you old guys.
Jinge Liu - I love it, and I'm 52, so I'm assuming I'm not 'old' yet?! No response required...😁
I am almost 71 and I’ve just placed an order for the Civiv SR so older people can drive and appreciate a decent car when they see one.
They still haven't fixed why the revs hang so much between gear changes- il keep my DC2 thanks. Old, light, pure & free from electronics..
Didn't experience that but glad you are happy with your current car.
Wheres the air intake?
Which one ?
the hood vent.
I dnt gonna buy one till they make one rear wheel drive ! Why they still made it front wheel drive a car is fro off road ?
Your next car?
Could be 😜
Golf clubsport S done the Nurburgring in 7:47 minutes
+carl lynch I blame the Honda website for misinformation 😂
Renaultsport had the record for sometime with the Trophy R then Seat Leon Cupra sub8 then the Honda tyre R beat that time now The Volkswagen Golf clubsport S has the record ! I think Renaultsport will be trying to claim the record back with the new Renaultsport Megane which will be realised within a year or two ? Hot hatches are getting seriously quick !
Awesome review ! Can i have your jacket though ??? :D :D
I might have to start a merch line !!!
What's the price
I talk about price and configuration options in the video !
36k for a civic your having a laugh, i have an ep3 civic type r and new that was 16k.
It seems to be the way of the world, each version of a car comes to market much more expensive than the previous one !
Philip Hawkins - fast forward two years and these are now reaching 16k.. lovely timing.. a few more years and I’m READY !! 🤩
It must be a shiter if the price is 16k
Mmm if I was 20 again i'd love this car, but im not so I dont. RS still just edging it so far for me, this thing looks ridiculous IMO, and is too compromised to make sense for most I would suggest. Thanks though Pete!
Thanks Nick. This car is certainly getting the most polarised comments so far. LOVE and HATE in equal measure. I knew it would be too much for a lot of you. Don't get me wrong, I love the looks and the drive but I'm not sure I could have one parked outside my house or turn up to a customer meeting in one !!
I went for the a45 amg fl and never looked back
100% nicer than the fk8, no fake vents or anything that what lets the fk8 down, they have made it tok out there and too fake
Great Machine but looks like something a kid would buy. I'll stick with the Focus RS
no race track suff so mate you should gone gone to a race track
Not sure the dealership would have been too happy with that ;-)
Best looking hatch? your joking right?
That is what I love about reviewing these Hot Hatches. They are all so different and we all like different things :-)
Great review but personally the design leaves a lot to wish for. I would never drive this thing if I was older then 20 I think. In my opinion it looks absolutely ridiculous.
I love Honda's but that car looks horrible. looks like a 4 door. all those red accents look awful
Not the wastegate you're hearing.
I was waiting a whole week just for this shit car
I'm jk I love when is it gonna come out
Shame about the interior....
God this is one ugly looking car
Horrible to look at, horrendous ride quality useless in the wet and not special enough to be a weekend toy. Focus RS all the way for me.
+Word Maestro You don't like it then 😜😂
Everyone is entitled to be wrong ;)
Jean, you are indeed entitled to be wrong ;)
