The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta, he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

Oh, I knew Oliver Reed died during filming and they also had to do some CGI tricks (and other tricks) to get a couple last scenes of him in the movie. I had a bit of a crush on Oliver after seeing him in The 3 Musketeers (from way back in the 70's, I think). I didn't know about all the details of his last night /day. The story about the pub and his unpaid bill is really poetic. 💔

52:05 I love the way that Maximus' image of the afterlife was the road leading downhill through the wheat fields towards his farm, with his wife and son waiting safely for him to come home. Even the way he described it to Marcus Aurelius at the start of the movie, it sounded like paradise.

One of the movies guaranteed to make me tear up at the end - much of the credit for that goes to the fantastic music by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard!
Fun fact: Lisa sings that song (and many others) in a made up "language" she created, with heavy Mediterranean influences (as in, she takes influences from the languages spoken in that area), but also other influences, like Irish.

Really enjoy your reactions, especially this one...Ridley Scott almost always delivers. FYI, contrary to popular belief, in ancient Rome, the thumbs-up sign from the emperor did not mean spare the life of the defeated opponent. It was the command to kill him. A thumbs-down was the order to let the defeated man live.

Especially, but not limited to that time period it was normal for royals to have siblings and other close family get together! It was normal for royals to keep the family pure by not mixing the genes with others outside their family. To give you a great example, Cleopatra wanted to be Queen but she couldn't unless she was married. She married the oldest of her 2 brothers. Years later he died so she then married her other brother in order to stay Queen. There are a LOT of other examples of such relationships to this day of Royal couples made up of siblings or cousins or Uncles and nieces! There are also such couples in entertainment. Singer Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old first cousin (daughter of his aunt and uncle) 👱‍♀👱‍♀👗👗👠👠❤❤

No, not a real story. Scott picked some Roman names out of a hat along with a few superficial stories and made his own movie. And actually, I'm okay with that. He told his own story, that's fine. But a lot of people are ignorant and think Scott's movie has some historicity to it. It has none. It's all bollocks. So, enjoy the movie and let it go at that.

Cold Mountain (2003) is another essential viewing film. Sweeping, epic war / drama / love story set against the closing years of the US Civil war. It compares with Last Samurai and Braveheart.
Brief synopsis: 3 years into the war, wounded Confederate soldier Inman has had enough of killing and abandons his post to make the *long* journey back home to his state and his love, Ada. The distance he has is something like 1 to 2 state's worth of walking and he's wanted by both sides now. The film cuts back and forth between Inman's journey and Ada's struggle to stay alive during the very difficult war years.
Themes includes love, friendship, the horrors of war and the unbreakable human spirit. Bring hankies. ♥
It's based on the famous fiction historical novel of the same name by Charles Frazier.

No. The story itself is not true. Commodus did not kill his father Aurelius or die in the Coliseum. He was strangled by his personal bodyguard as part of a palace coup. He killed sister, Lucilla, soon after he became emperor. He also spent a good amount of time with his father in Germania, so Aurelius could attempt to teach him to be a good emperor. It failed, he was terrible emperor. His decision to make peace with the barbarians rather than completely crush them led to the crisis of the 3rd century where Rome nearly collapsed.

Marcus Aurelius and Commodus are real. The story is not. I don't believe that the Romans ever conquered Germania. One problem was that Germania was not united as a nation, but was a collection of tribes. If you defeat a nation, it's over. If you defeat a tribe. There are more tribes, waiting.
