Its driving me crazy why that was there 😬 haha. Did it mean anything? Did the sister do it and why? Were they actually all killed by someone else? 🤔 Argh!
@@MollyMcBooter also there were two guys who were honored by being burned alive for bringing in outsiders. One guy brought in the London couple. Who did the other guy bring?
MIdsommar and Last Black Man in San Francisco are the two best films I seen this year. I think in large part to the incredible cinematography in both films.
It felt like Aster tried to mash up the 70s Wicker Man with the hilarious Nic Cage version. Some (late) scenes were so absurd and surreal they undercut any sense of drama
@@cjwright79 there's nothing to 'get'. Aster is doing his version of TWM. Swedish grad student lures his gullible and vulnerable friends to his wackadoo village to be used as human sacrifices. The girl becomes their 'May Queen' and seemingly embraces the role as a way of coping with loss and disappointment. And yes my entire audience laughed at the sex ceremony, because it was ridiculous
Don't agree, I think Hereditary was way more fucked up and hard to watch. Midsommar was great with awesome shots, amazing story development and character development. But I was looking for a bit more shock value. I wasn't shook like I was when I left the theater after seeing Hereditary.
I think also after Hereditary, you know what your getting into with a Ari Aster. I'm sure anyone who hasn't seen Hereditary would be losing their mind at what happens
At 9:23 - I'm not sure that Dani is "experiencing acceptance, no matter how f*cked up it is," by the end. She has been emotionally assaulted over and over, from the death of her entire immediate family, that she is still in deep mourning six months later. Christian, her boyfriend of four years, has been considering breaking up with her for a year and a half, by the time they get to Sweden. He is not emotionally supportive in any meaningful way. And the first of the celebrations is the Attastupa, or the ritualistic suicide of the elders over 72 years. Dani is NOT handling any of this well. Christian is more intrigued by it (as an anthropology PhD candidate), and instead of being useful as a boyfriend, he tells her "It's cultural, and I'm trying to keep an open mind." While Pelle is comforting, no one is truly addressing the horrific mental and emotional hammer blows of how she is being impacted by everything around her. By the end... Yes, Dani is accepted and loved by the Harga. She has also completely lost it. She has lost all connection to her family, her friends and acquaintances from America and Britain. The Harga people throw their lives away like it's nothing, whether it is "the end of the life-cycle," or "time to be a sacrifice," or whatever. By the end, life has no real meaning for Dani. She is in grave danger, but is too far gone to know or care what is coming next, but she will be comforted by the folks around her as she does whatever they make her do next. This isn't comforting. This isn't accepting. This is someone whose grasp on reality is gone. The last smile isn't a happy smile. It is an insane smile.

Sadly Amazon Prime bought the rights to this garbage instead of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Even David Chin (filmcast) ,who worked for Amazon, has since tried to backtrack on whether he liked Midsommar. Hope he's not the reason for that fateful decision at Amazon.
Interesting review but I find I don't agree on a lot of it. For one - it's not all that gory or scary, at least not in the things that are shown. The things you don't see are the worst. The boy who was skinned - alive. The other boy who we see knocked out - he was buried alive. And the other boy who we see was cut open and tortured and kept alive as long as possible. (Also, the women who can be heard being tortured) We don't truly comprehend how evil and cruel this society is until the story wraps up. We do see that the two who volunteered to be sacrificed are given a drug and told they would not feel pain - they are lied to. This is important to the story. As some may say about certain political policies - the cruelty is the point. These seemingly welcoming people are deep down cruel - or, at least, their leadership is. But then - think about it - any society that would just tell their elders "you're too old now, go jump off a cliff".....well, that is a cruel society. I believe you could watch this movie and see it as non-political, as just a story or sort of a fairly tale. But, there is a political side here. This is the story of a society that has rules and follows those rules - and they despise outsiders. I tend to think what saved Dani was two things - Yes, Pelle, liked her and he did bring the outsiders to be sacrificed, so he deserves a reward in their eyes. But, also, Dani looks like them. She could pass as German or Swedish - she can physically blend in. This is very important to these people...........One other thing you might ask: where are the physically disabled? The sick?.......if you guessed that they got tossed off a cliff, I expect you are right. There was likely a ceremony and the tribe pretended to care. Pretended to feel their pain. It was just threatre. Just an act.
The movie is filed.very well, however it is not a good movie. The characters on this movie are unrealistic unbelievable, and unaware of what is going on.
Good review, but there's something I want to point out. I just came from your 'Joker' reviews, and I couldn't help but to notice that, while you imply that this film is an merely homage to 'The Wicker Man', the other one is supposedly a total rip off of 'Taxi Driver' and 'The King of Comedy'. Why the double standard? I love you guys, but you're showing real bias here.
To be clear, I agree that this film is only an homage to TWM (that is, not a copy or a rip off). But the same is clearly true for 'Joker' with respect to the two Scorsese movies previously mentioned.
