I am a jaded horror fan, and this flick shook me to my core. I cried twice and was completely freaked out by the end. I can't praise this film enough.

Yeah, of all the scenes, the dinner scene was the one that really upset me.
Ari Aster and Jordan Peele have arrived at a very interesting time in the horror genre. For the last decade, a vast majority of mainstream American horror films have been "family-moves-into-haunted-house". Both of these directors have offered fresh ideas and unsurprisingly people have gravitated towards that. These directors will be very important people in 20 years time when we look back.

Aster is a towering, shining beacon of hope in the otherwise barren horror world. Hereditary was nothing short of a masterpiece, and undoubtedly my favourite horror movie. I can't wait for Midsommar.

now that midsommar's out, what did you think of it? to me, it was one of the greatest horror films but kind of lacked in a few explanations like what god the pagans in hårga were worshipping, or what happened to a lot of the characters. ari put so much into midsommar that it deserves more than three watches to fully understand every minutia and little detail of the lore, and the visuals itself, and yet it still lacks in those explanations.
some other amazing directors are jordan peele (get out, us) and robert eggers (the witch, the lighthouse).

Ι honestly thought I was immune to horror films after watching so many cheap, popcorn-horror movies.
Every film seemed to disrespect the viewer using horror movie cliches again and again,
like jump scares, creepy children and characters you don't care about and can't sympathize with, who take obviously wrong decisions .
I am so happy I watched this film and remembered how it feels to be thrilled by a horror movie!
I also love that I wasn't sure what the theme of the movie was exactly before watching it; social drama, or paranormal horror movie?
I miss so much watching a movie without having it being spoiled by the movie's marketing campaign.

This movie hit me in a way I never expected while going in. I literally broke down at one point it got to me so deeply. Hell of a first feature. Can’t wait for his next
Also, the low pulsing sound I thought might be delta waves to be honest, which I thought had something to do with a deep sleeping state.
i know this may seem odd but i'm really fascinated by him as person. he just seems to be so shy and vulnerable, he even mumbles at times or stumble on his words; and then you watch his movies and your jawline drops for how terrifying they are. I just guess that's his own way to overcome traumas? (which just confirms my idea that horror is a cathartic experiece). i dont know, his mind amazes me, he's just an introvert dude who loves creepy movies , he's a great director, he brought horror to a new level. keep giving me nightmare material, king.

I think that is often true of many masterpiece makers in this genre, in writing, film etc.
I haven’t been so disturbed at the movies as I was watching Hereditary. Doesn’t go for cheap jump scares and predictable setup, it’s genuinely unsettling and gets the heart going lol midsommar did the same for me

This was definitely one of the most scary movies I’ve ever seen. The acting was insanely good and I felt the real pain and terror and it was terrifying

I love how original Ari is, beyond the fact he does horror movies. He puts something that is not just scary but a “vision”,a personal atmosphere
It's hard to believe Hereditary was made by a first time director, it's so effective, it opens up so much conversation too. Was that a PT reference, the picture of Peter with the eyes cut out, on the attick floor, near the end?? It HAS to be, the two best horror works in each medium, in years or maybe ever?
It was a breath of fresh air in the “horror” drama. It was real, it was relatable and heart poundingly terrifying. I loved it and I hated it. I loved the master crafted filmmaking and I hated that it had dominated my feelings and thoughts since I left the theater last night! I also saw a bit more of some of my Salt Lake City crowd that I ever wanted to!! Haha. WeLL

I'm not a horror fan at all, and I consider this one of my top five films easy. Or maybe I'm a horror fan after all, lol But imagine not many films like this one. I almost walked out. I never felt so stressed out watching a film. Just dying for some relief. It was great!

That droning noise they used at points in the film for some reason gave me anxiety and made my reaction to the film even more strong. This is an excellent piece of work and my favorite film of the year so far. There's been a sort of resurgence of fantastic horror movies in the last few years. I mean, there is usually at least one good horror movie a year, but since like 2015 there seems to be at least 3 or 4 excellent ones, ones that are like Hereditary in terms of atmosphere, tone and style to a certain extent instead of annoying jumpscares.

Sinjin Faull I have seen the Babadook. I liked the cinematography and the feeling of dread but found the kid a bit annoying. I have not seen pyewacket though. Thank you. I will check it out.

@@ashleywalker1411 he has said that the research into demonology was disturbing that's why. Also during the marketing of the film he tried to keep the cult aspect a surprise. And besides what's in the movie (a lot of it is inaccurate) it seems he doesn't know much and doesn't care, he took liberties because he was more concerned with the quality of the film. Real demonologists condemn this movie for it's inaccurate portrayal of Paimon and the Ars Goetia. But then you have paranoid people who know nothing saying the movie is demonically cursed with real rituals on display.
Best horror movie of all time. Hands down.
My buddy and i always see movies together, been doin it for 15 yrs now, this is the first movie we’ve ever gone to see in theaters more than once. And we went 3 times! Incredible!!!
i remember watching this and feeling completely immersed in the film to the point where I realized at one point in the film my fist had bench clenched so tightly for about 15 minutes that my hand was starting to hurt. This has never happened to me before. This was a new feeling for me that has never happened before while watching a horror film.

Aster might be one of the best things to happen in horror cinema in recent years. Both Hereditary and Midsommar are incredibly disturbing, eerie and terrifying, and both know how to work with their characters and imagery. I'm really excited to see Disappointment Blvd.!
Oh, it’s so gratifying to hear him describe Millie’s participation in the project. She’s an adorable teenager who has had a career for nearly a decade already banking on the fact that she’s an adorable (and talented) kid. I love the fact (and it makes perfect sense) that she would relish the chance to be as creepy as humanly possible. And boy does she succeed.
Sure the movie is dark and horrifying, but she’s a professional and she’s a smart young lady, she knows full well that it’s make-believe (for all intents and purposes).
There's never been a movie that disturbed me to my core so much that I had to stop watching it, until Hereditary. The Scene (yes, that scene) messed me up so badly at that time. It made me depressed. I couldn't stop dwelling on it for days. It wasn't even necessarily *what* happened (though it was completely unexpected), but Peter's (Alex Wolff) reaction to it in the immediate aftermath. Knowing that he was then going to go home, I knew it was going to be too much for me to handle. When he pulled into the driveway I found myself saying aloud to no one "no, no, no, no". I shut it off. I didn't think I'd be able to finish it. I finally worked up the courage to continue it a few days later, and Toni Collette's reaction is exactly what I feared. I love this movie. Anything that can have that kind of impact on me is a masterpiece, and nothing has effected me quite like that. In fact, it's in my top 4 favorite horror movies along with The Thing, The Shining, and Jacob's Ladder (which is indeed a horror movie as well, despite some disagreeing with that). I've lost count of how many times I've re-watched Hereditary. Still noticing new things. In terms of great directors, I put Ari Aster up there with the best of them. And he's young, so I can't wait for all of his future endeavors.

I wasn’t mentally well for the rest of the day after seeing the movie. Great work of film though. This and Midsommar will come down as classics in the next few decades.

Whatever he said he was trying to do , he nailed . This is a rare movie that stayed with me for quite some time after. Even now, my stomach twists if somebody says “ Want to watch Hereditary again?” A true masterpiece.
I've watched thousands of movies in my life. Hereditary is the first film that gave me this horrible feeling that stayed with me for days. Yet i watched it again. Then swore never to re-watch it! Terrifying.

You can disagree with the fans, you can even say that the film is not for you, but if you claim that this movie is bad, then you are wrong. Its bad, very bad actually. What's scary is how these days horror films are overhyped and overrated, making them sound like its the next Godfather or something. Just like it happened with A quiet place, its all right,, entertaining, that's it, with a very bad script.
You need some education on cinematography. But people like you are the reason we get these garbage half-assed , jumpscare bullshit movies. Look past the 1st level of comprehension a movie offers you. The script is super rich when you start using your brain cells and question what you see.
People love to hate. You can't please everyone.I believe it's more gruesome and disturbing than scary.Some people just hate the genre and some are atheists who just think horror movies are for religious fanatics.I loved it and loved the slow pace of the movie.The ending seemed rushed and too much was happening like someone suddenly started driving at 100 mph.
@Deepa Lall whats does being an atheist as to do with anything ? lol . Its a psychological drama more than a gore movie, which to me is a lot more scarier.. felt the same for Shining and Possession.
The sub drum was, besides all the agony and pain in the plot, the thing that made me so uneasy. I really felt anxious as soon as I felt that sub drum. I’m glad I watched it with friends because I would never be able to finish watching it all by myself.
Hello. Something I have been in search for quite sometime is a connection with somebody that goes beyond vanity. It's very hard to do in this day and age. People can be, somewhat very superficial.
On my quest to achieve this I have learnt a lot about human nature. It seems to me that those who are not given traits such as beauty or being wealthy are some of the nicest, kindest and generous people.
While the "gorgeous" and well off seem to be the most arrogant and greedy people out there. Of course that's not to say there aren't beautiful kind people out there.
I've been in the process of change for a while now and I have made some decent changes but don't you just hate it when people can't let go of your past mistakes.

Hereditary is my all time list for sure. Best horror film since The Witch and It Follows.
I don't think it is in any way comparable to these movies.
This movie operates as more than a “horror” movie. It’s a legitimately good movie, and can even work as a drama.
So much of the horror comes from the family drama. I like thinking about the movie as “horrifying” rather than just “scary”. It builds such a sense of unease and discomfort without relying on cheap scares.
it's very hard for a director who has never shot a movie to find the funds for him, he had some compromises, so it seems to me at least, but it could have been a cult film but then he would not make alot of movie like david lynch,tarantino but it seems to me he want to make alot of movies and probably he would i take my hat of for ari who had gabriel byrne in his first motion picture in support role with toni collete in lead role
The impetus of the film as a raw family drama is so compelling. I would love to have seen the development of a family to chaos after a sudden death. I appreciate the darkness of it. How everyone grieves in a personal way. Some rise and some fall.
I can’t watch this film unfortunately because I simply cannot handle this type of content. But I enjoyed learning about the film in this interview.
kisslena I went into this unprepared and I cannot handle that specific content either so I promptly left the theater after that scene for a moment to call my mom! And when i returned i had my hand up to shield any further instances !!!

I don’t understand the reason people watch horror movies of the genre of demonic possession. My imagination is very sufficient to the task of seeing the unseen.
I would love to see it. The staging of this “family drama” is so compelling! I get the premise completely. Up until the demonic possession. Themes of the family “under siege” and tearing apart due to a terrible secret is so interesting. I can handle dark psychological content.
I can’t handle demonic possession stories, coming from a standpoint that it’s not a casual topic to be trifled with.

Theyre pretty close but i like darker cinematography i get from The Witch more than the brighter from hereditary
