I just saw Midsommar and I absolutely need Dan and Roth to help me process it in a full spoiler analysis like they did for Hereditary! Can't wait for how Ari Aster is going to torment us next!
I always take divisiveness as a good sign (or at least more hope that it could be a great movie, not just a good movie). If everyone likes something, chances are it's playing it safe and isn't all that unique. Movies that are divisive are probably pushing boundaries on something (for better or worse), and are much more likely to be unique.
I'm so glad we got Roth and Dan for this review! Their Hereditary review from last year is one of my absolute favorite movie reviews by them. I'm defintiely going to listen to this review again after I see the movie.
Same for me. While watching it, I did something I've never done before in a theater and leaned over to my wife and asked "do you want to go? Is this too much?" After a couple days we both couldn't get it out of our head so we kind of agree anything that sits with us that long was at least a brilliantly crafted film.
@@kylesmorgabord5592 i guess its better then the same old horror types from before, man now i started feeling wierd as we talk about it 😯 and its 3 at night here,i lit my book reading lamp just to feel safer, and there was a bug hitting a wall in my room it sounded like scratching, fuck im not gonna sleep at all, fuck 😯😯😂
Miss Roth! Does she still do reviews anywhere? I really enjoyed her and Dan together in their review. Good balance, chemsitry and interesting discussions!
It’s interesting that Dan thinks this movie doesn’t quite have a throughline. I agree with Roth that it does. I read it as a film about our cultural response to grief and to the sharing of grief. In that way, I think it reaches a very satisfying conclusion. I also really like that the cult has some good and admirable qualities. The third act doesn’t devolve into the horror stereotype of the main character being chased through the woods. The cult, in some ways, is exactly what Dani needs. Anyway, I really liked it.
I could listen to Roth & Dan break down a movie for hours. They complement each other's review styles really well and it makes for a very interesting discussion. Each one keeps pushing the discussion deeper in different ways. Here, Roth is pushing the discussion deeper into the themes while Dan dives deeper into the structure elements which is very compelling to me, as someone who values themes a lot while also being of the mind that a movie has to be good superficially before it can be good in a deeper layer.
While I trust Dan's and Roth's opinions, if this movie is more (challenging, violent, disturbing, surreal) than Hereditary...this is not a movie for me.
Ikr? I am not a horror fan but I thought hereditary was a very good movie, although I don't like graphic imagery. From the trailers it seemed Midsommar would be less of what you said. Certainly not more!
I really enjoy discussing aspects within the film as well as the conversations it raises beyond itself. Lot of interesting insights to be gained, you have my attention Dan and Roth.
I already bought my ticket two weeks ago! This is one of my most anticipated movies of the year, second only to Avengers: Endgame! I hated Hereditary the first night I watched it, but I gave it a second chance based on your glowing review and it turned into my second favorite movie of the year, funnily behind Infinity War. I know I am going to have to see this one many, many times and I'm so excited for it! But I still have a week to go.....
I cannot wait! Unfortunately, this is the kind of film I wind up going alone, so I will be commenting! You guys are great, and I love your reviews. Many times you give me a lot to think about. As you both, I loved Hereditary. It was actually on my brain for months after I saw it. I loved the challenge. It was a fantastic viewing experience so many films rarely give you
Great review!! I absolutely loved this film. It’s really exciting getting this second dose of Aster after his explosion onto the scene with Hereditary. I feel like after Midsommar, I can almost rest assured that yup, this is him. These are the stories he’s got to share with the world. I already feel like no matter what genre he explores, he will always bring certain elements- thematically and in terms of cinematography, that I have totally fallen in love with. I love the way he unravels a character and the details he chooses to leave in or out. I still can’t even quite put my finger on what I loved most about this film; Hereditary was a very slow burn for me too. At first I wasn’t even sure that I liked it. It took a few days for me to really have the epitome of how good the film was. With Midsommar, I can’t stop thinking about it. The tone, the mood...I think above all, it’s Dani’s character that really stood out to me. For me, she pulled every emotion that she needed for me to feel the exact way I think Aster intends by the ending, and I am totally in the camp of people that will be at every single one of his films going forward.
Dan I’ll say it for you bro, this movie had too much going on and it wasn’t that great. It’s “meh”. It didn’t live up. Just because the actors deliver, and it looks pretty, it does not make up for mediocre storytelling. Making a movie openly weird also doesn’t make it a great movie. 🤦🏻♂️
I read the screenplay last night.......*shudders* I’m still kind of processing it. And I didn’t even see it! I think it’s such an interesting look at co- dependency in relationships.
I loved Hereditary and I’m super interested in this movie. I really enjoyed listening to your discussion of Heredity and am looking forward to your full spoiler discussion of Midsommar.
The sex ritual scene seems straight inspired by the Suspiria remake, as well as the whole premise of the movie. The 2019 Suspiria remake had way more impact on the "weird artsy horror"genre than many would like to admit
I’m still waiting on the spoiler review, guys. Flick was just released in Australia and I want to hear some of your thoughts in a deeper, spoilery way.
Need a spoiler discussion from you two on this one. Great movie, enjoyed it quite a bit. Not as high on my list as Hereditary, but like Dan, I'll gladly go see anything this guy puts out in the future. And yes, the beverage was brilliant, and I'm pretty confident the majority of the audience I saw it with totally missed it.
Based on what I heard about Hereditary and what you're saying about this movie, I don't think I have the stomach for Ari Aster's movies which is a shame since I'd love to be part of the conversation. I did want to pop in and recommend that Roth and Dan check out Lady Macbeth with Florence Pugh if you haven't seen it yet. It's a UK film from 2 years ago and I know you don't always hear about those but that's the movie that put her on my radar. She's a tour de force in it and it's a movie that really goes places I wasn't expecting.
After Hereditary's car scene I was pretty chill watching the fall scene here, compared to my best friend who was totally shocked, because he didn't see Hereditary so he didn't know what to expect. Even tho it was very brutal and visceral. Visually I adored this movie, but story vise I wasn't into it much. Liked Hereditary more, this one gets a veeeeeeery strong 7/10. But I will watch Ari Aster's next movie as soon as I can can, and he's one of my favorite new directors after Jordan Peele.
I think had I not known this was directed by Ari Aster, I would have just dismissed this as a passable wicker man style cult based horror movie with pacing issues. Knowing it was directed by Ari, however, I left this movie very conflicted; trying to give it the benefit of the doubt and assuming I just missed something, but feeling in my heart that I just really didn't enjoy this movie in most respects. I thought the first 30-45 mins were excellent, but once they got to the cult compound, it just turned into a slog. Every plot point was so telegraphed that I just found myself bored, waiting for what I knew was going to happen at almost every turn. Hereditary was good enough for me to still want to see the next Ari Aster film, but this one definitely didn't completely sell me on him like it has for Dan and Roth.
I love SJU, always have. Every single one of you. But I was very down cuz of the Rothless eps... and there are a lot of those. So thank you for including her, albeit sporadically, but I appreciate it a LOT. Greetings from Guatemala.
Love seeing the both of you! Also, I really hope you do a spoiler review of this one, because I am feeling some things after seeing it last night and I need your guidance!!
70% of the discussion was about the director and its vision rather than the acting. Yup, I have been on board with this film for a long time, but now its like Im committed.
Finally managed to watch the film. I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with Dan in his review. Its a good film, and highly recommend to those who like to analyze filmmaking in general. However its not a film I see myself revisiting unless I introduce a friend to it, in the future.
So if you're in a dead end relationship or just needing to have your perception of co-dependency/trauma cracked WIDE open, go see Midsommar 🤯 While a little too long for my taste, it was shot beautifully with a score that really drove home the insanity that is this film 😱👏 Florence Pugh without a doubt deserves to be in the conversation for this year's award season because she is amazing in this film 🤯 I couldn't help but empathize with her character from the opening scene to the closing shot. She was nothing short of a revelation! 👏😭😱😍👏 Ari Aster has created two uniquely challenging films with Hereditary and Midsommar. I love being consumed by stories like these because they force me to analyze EVERYTHING 🤔 as they can not be taken at face value whatsoever. Simply put, it's cinematic art & I am here for it! Be warned though, this film is not for the faint of heart 😱👏
I agree with the lady : it was about exploring human emotions and empathy in different settings, yes break up movie but never forget the involuntary & voluntary human sacrifices made to the gods by this "secret society". I understand however that those who died in horrific circumstances (spread Eagle - viking torture method) were slightly aloof, hollow, superficial characters - neverthless still human beings who just forgot to check TripAdvisor reviews about this sacred secret place in rural Sweden...Skoll 🥂
Great review. I’d love to hear/watch you do one on Under The Silver Lake ... unless you already have. A lot of your feelings on Midsommar I think apply to UTSL as far as the filmmaking and the filmmaker’s intents and ambitions.
Was it Chamomile Tea??? Anyway, this year, from Gasper Noe's Climax to this film taught me one awesome lesson... Don't. Drink. The. Punch. This film was intense beyond my psyche. Great job!
Love to see you two talk about movies with one another. Great review! This movie was not on my radar, but now you have me intrigued. Thanks for sharing your opinions.
I just saw the movie on Friday afternoon. Definitely appreciated it and will relish seeing it a second time, but it's certainly not "WOW THAT WAS SOMETHING" type movie like Hereditary was. I DID think it was too damn long. There's no way that needed to nearly 2 and a half hours long. My wife and I are posting a podcast about Once Upon A Time In The West on Monday (Top 100 Project on iTunes, etc) and we have pretty strong feelings about how much Sergio Leone drags things out, although at least he was a legend and that was his style. Ari Aster did that in Midsommar too and it just wasn't necessary. Respect people's time! :) Having said that, it's an interesting redo of The Wicker Man, but I don't (after 1 viewing) feel like it brought anything all that new to the "foreign cults'll kill ya" genre. Okay, it didn't bring as much newness the genre that I would expect from a writer/director this talented. Aster loves (or hates) cults, which is obvious, but it just felt like we've pretty much seen this kind of thing before.
I felt that this flick had a lot of promise and I enjoyed the first two thirds. However, it's WAY TOO LONG and the ending is merely functional, not very rewarding. By the end, I just didn't care anymore, none of the characters earn enough empathy for the pedestrian and predictable nature of the conclusion to have a strong emotional impact.
Agreed. I was hooked from the beginning, then it started to drag around the time the invitees start flipping out about the ritual. Would defo watch another Ari movie, but "Midsommar" was a letdown. Especially after "Hereditary."
I wouldn’t mind seeing Roth Cornet & Dan leave and start their own channel. I really love their brains and how they process films. They’re very detailed and attentive.
*Today is Mel Brooks birthday. He’s 93. Please look for my question in the community tab for fan Friday questions and up vote it (and this post that’s on there too) so we can get a well deserved happy birthday for him on SJU and get answers to the good question in there*
I haven't been this excited about a horror since Jig-Saw, and Midsommer has me questioning. (Jig-Saw didn't, mainly because we're all aware what the Saw series is about)
I just found out that it doesn't come out until end of september in my country. I'm kind of bummed out because I assume similar to hereditary discussing and disecting the movie with you would've been a huge part of the fun.
Oh my god IM SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU GUYS TOGETHER AGAIN!
So GOOD!!!!
As I opened the video, I said out loud ‘Please be Roth and Dan, please be Roth and Dan’.
You two should have a tv show. Great on screen chemistry
But first Kenny, Spenny, and The Biz :)

I hope you guys decide to do a spoiler review in a couple weeks when it comes out as I’d be very interested in the details

I hope so too. I won’t see it because I can’t do horror movies, but I ❤️ analysis from Dan & Roth & apparently this movie is a doozie.

Ari Aster, Dan, and Roth. A new golden trio!!
My most anticipated movie of Sommar 2019!
Are you guys gonna do another deep dive spoiler review for this like y'all did for Hereditary?
I’m kinda late to the discussion, but LOVE Roth’s points and articulation of the concepts of “Midsommar”!
It took me a few days to figure out that Hereditary was a great movie.

Painfully obvious, how did he not notice?

I like how thought-provoking this movie seems to be for the two of you. Hereditary was a cute movie, so I'll give this one a shot as well.
Idk how I missed this.
I adore Will Poulter in everything and can’t wait to see this!
I wouldn’t mind seeing Roth Cornet & Dan leave and start their own channel. I really love their brains and how they process films. They’re very detailed and attentive.
But is it funnier than Hereditary? That was the (very unintentionally) funniest movie of 2018.
Yes. Most definitely. But in a good way.
Always skip ahead when someone says "This isn't a spoiler, but..."
this was a little too self indulgent for my taste... absolutely did not have to be 2 and a half hours
I was never a fan of horror movies. I saw Hereditary by accident and absolutely loved it. I'm ready to get my expectations blown away again.
Roth Cornet and Dan are the dream team. I love 'em.
As a Swede I'm very excited to see people in Sweden hate this movie because of false advertisement.

*Today is Mel Brooks birthday. He’s 93. Please look for my question in the community tab for fan Friday questions and up vote it (and this post that’s on there too) so we can get a well deserved happy birthday for him on SJU and get answers to the good question in there*
We need shows like yours on tv...you can’t get this type of content on mainstream tv
I can't wait...still thinking of hereditary and something strange about the johnsons...
Roth and Dan back together again!
Its Roth and Dan!!!
This is the kind of movie I don't enjoy watching but do enjoy doing deep dives into on youtube
