The writer of the O.J. Simpson jokes on Saturday Night Live was Jim Downey. When he was fired, Norm MacDonald, who was one of the show's cast members, was warned about this since Jim was his main writer. Norm told the executives that if they fired Jim, he would quit too. Norm stood in solidarity with Jim and quit the show, but he did not tell anyone, not even Jim. Years later, Jim found out from one of the SNL executives what Norm had done for him.
The President who ordered the firing and ordered not to retain Norm also quit a year later. A few months after that, Norm was asked to host SNL, and even Jim got rehired.

The humor in Norm being relentless on OJ wasn’t out of sympathy at OJ. It was frustration that we all knew he got away with a double murder just for being good at a sport. We loved Norm for not backing down when he was being pressured to. He was saying what we were all thinking but almost no one else on TV would dare say.
OJ Simpson was an obvious murderer who got away with it because of his wealth & fame.
It’s even more relevant now, as we all watch another obvious criminal getting away with more obvious crimes.

Not even a nervous laugh, people literally just joked about OJ being a murderer so much, that I think people looked at the fact that he did it as nothing more than some kind of a stand up routine. In some cases it was sure, but the mentality people had around it got to a place where people were actually just like "He cut his wife's head off and killed her boyfriend in similarily brutal manor, pffft so what? in my heart and mind norm still does weekend update and his oj death jokes go something like this:
"breaking NEWS, we lost the JUICE...way too soon. I personally wish he had lived long enough to...see Nicole's parents die too, I mean..."
    *audience hissing
"what? they ruined an innocent man's live, cause as I understand, he would have taken a bullet for Nicole Brown...and they kept coming for him *giggles...that's not right..."
    or something like:
"O.J. Simpson died this week, after a long battle with cancer. most of his family had distanced themselves from him and his life was filled with literal trials and tribulations...man...always the good and innocent ones..."

Norm is the GOAT. And Conan is pretty great himself. But he looks like an Irish grandmother.

"No one can ever take it away from him"... “unless you kill your wife and a waiter.”
Norm Macdonald at the 1998 ESPY Awards.
Golden opportunity missed at the end of this video.

By the 90's nobody considered OJ the best of all time. Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, Marcus Allen, Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders and Emmit Smith were all accepted as better than Juice. He has some diehards and was indeed great, but his "GOAT" status only lasted til the Super Bowl Shuffle. His tenure as a well liked broadcaster was totally unique at the time, however. Like a Troy Aikman, he was one of the best players and handsomest broadcasters.

Norm did NOT lose his job at SNL as a result of his relentless but funny O.J. jokes. He was removed from Weekend Update only and left shortly thereafter. "Being fired" was a long-time rumor but even Norm debunked it years later. Conan and CNN know better.
