Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Wow, thank you
Isn't he amazing!??
He's gonna blow up soon. UA-cam's best kept secret.
@@sulamith105 I wonder how many subscribers he had when you wrote this. He has 213k subscribers now. His hair is short now too.

This video is awesome! I loved when you said that your painting will be different from the reference. It’s so easy to think getting it to look just like the reference will make it good, but the fun of art is changing it to look even better! We aren’t painting to be a printer.
This. There was a time when artists were the photographers of the world, but that is no longer the case. Hyper-realism is an impressive spectacle, but that's just a gimmick.
As an artist, you should focus on what you can deliver that anyone with a smartphone can't: experience/feeling. What serves that, does. What doesn't is a waste.
An artist is not a recorder, but a curator, a creator, and a storyteller.
Excellent instruction. The "bad examples" plus your ccomments on do's and DONT's are invaluable.
Thanks for the emphasis on the darks and lights and the light sources!
This actually helped a ton with my digitally painted trees!
Always helpful watching you break things down and simplify the process. Been watching your videos for months now and getting better. Thank you for all the content you continue to share Chris!
Glad you like them!
Trees and foliage have always been my arch nemesis, this helped a lot man, thank you so much!

I was waiting for a video like this from you about trees with this explanation. Thanks for the advice, I’m learning 😄
Glad to hear it!
This helps alot. I could apply it to palm trees as well.
Helpfull guide thank s master
That is so informative Chris. many thanks. Here in the UK we have bare deciduous trees in winter. No palms here! They are really tricky to paint. Would that be a video you might make sometime please? Thank you for all the help you are giving me - loving it! Karen Bloch
Excellent tutorial. Very helpful!

Thanks Coach
Thanks for help on something I struggled with!
Thank you so much!
Thank you again Chris
My pleasure!
Doing landscapes right now, and trees are trouble for me, so thank you for sharing. I’m not into the Bob Ross style, I don’t do stippling. I really like the way you do dappled light, (the one with the white egret) .I keep trying it, but so far no go. But I never give up. 😎 Tallahassee
Thank you.Hugs from Luxembourg.
Welcome!
Could you do a palm tree tutorial, please.
Loving your channel!
Thank you so much!

Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the great content!
Glad you enjoy it!
Great channel!
I loveeee ur videossss❤️❤️❤️
THANKS!
Hello again!
Hi a question, Ive noticed a lot of plein Air painters tend to avoid trees without leaves, ie winter trees. Is there a way to paint bare trees in a quick, loose style that doesn't end up becoming fiddly and granular. Im in the middle of winter here in Johannesburg and all my plein air trees are ending up being overworked because of all the branches.
I love the look of the wrong tree.
I can't explain how long it took me to realize painting bark on my trees brown was awful. Blanche
Hvem i draw ore paint trees, I look at them as a ballet danser. Stretching out The arms/branches more in one direktion more then The opposite side. Maby not on a pinetree, but on trees with leeavs...
i like it - very loose
You go, forza43!
Drink every time the coach says tree!
Love from india.
Excellently not sure where to sign up for the news letter so i can buynthe videos?
Is knowing the right colors to mix come with practice or is there a technique?
Lots of practice but there’s certainly technique to it. When trying to replicate a color identify it’s hue (red/orange/yellow/green/blue/purple), value (how light or dark it is) and saturation (if it is very vivid or more dull/gray).
@@harrymarcus7541 thank you!
I used to restore oil paintings for a living. I remember an oil painting of an autumnal woodland. Every leaf has been painted in and it was beautifully done however, there was no depth of field because the whole image was painted with the same strength, detail and intensity and it was just too much to look at. It became uncomfortable to view. Such a shame for all the work that had been put in, clearly whoever painted it had gone to great lengths.
Great demo. There is always something to learn from others no matter how long anyone has been painting.
Indeed, although sometimes an excess of information can be deliberately used to produce a different experience, but it's a fine line.
Completely different medium, but a nerdcore artist named Stupendium did a song/music video for DeltaRune called Ad Infinitum that quite adeptly captures that kind of information-overload, which is thematically appropriate to the subject matter. In my opinion, he does this really well, managing to stay balanced on keeping the song enjoyable to listen to. I was especially delighted that almost exactly at the time in the song where I felt completely mentally exhausted, it gives you a bit of a break.
I think that sort of experimental form-following-theme stuff is just one of my loves in art. One of my favourite animated series, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has an arc that revolves around characters trapped in a time loop, including the characters themselves being reset, and this arc lasts eight episodes where the events of the loop almost exactly repeat each episode. It's tedious to watch, for sure, and many hate it for that, but I absolutely love it because it makes you experience that sense of being trapped in a time loop in a way that you wouldn't get otherwise.
In both cases, messing at all with it ruins the effect. In the case the show, if you don't sit through all eight episodes focused on it, you lose the feeling of the looping. In the case of the song/music video, if you don't watch it fully focused, music video and all, on your first time seeing it, you've permanently ruined any change to really experience that information overload properly, since it is only the first time experiencing anything that you're so hyper-focused on processing novel information.
how do you do abstracts? its like there're a bunch of colors on top of one another and since they dont dry that quick my colors end up mixing together
This video made me mad. You have proven that so many others have wasted my time xD thanks for an actual good lesson hahaha
Do you paint this on wood panel?
Nice tips for painting tree 🙂
Do you use acrylic or oil paint?
Thanks for the video, Chris. What app were you using to blur the image; convert it to black and white; and then change it to a grayscale. That looks very useful.
Photoshop
Literally any image editing software can do this lol
"Dirty sky holes 🤬"
