Look At This: Thums Islands

The Thums Islands were built to tap into the oil off the Long Beach coast but because of the city's beautification laws, the architects had to disguise the facilities. The four man-made islands are named after fallen astronauts.

I lived in Huntington Beach in the latter-half of the '70s when I was quite young. I remember seeing these islands while my late Dad drove nearby. I thought that they were neat-looking.

Grissom Island is so close to the marina. If you really wanna see it up-close, park at Alamitos Beach and walk to Riviera Point

Long Beach recieves very good revenue from these Islands. Most wells are at 80 degre inclination and are producing from under the City of Longbeach.
