Thanks mate, I have been stuck for days.
First the car suddenly stopped being able to keep stable revs on neutral and would eventually die on me, if I didn't shift fast enough. That happened a few times before I was able to stop, connect diagnostics and find p1230. I drove it back home (just a few km) found out, that the code means a bad sensor, which I doubted, so I cleaned the throttle body, erased code and tried going around the block for a few times. Everything seemed ok, but next time I wanted to go somewhere it has done pretty much the same thing, but the codes were p1251 and p1260. (weak return springs), which I checked and the springs were a-ok. I tightened the throttle cable, erased the codes and drove back home. I got the check engine light again, but the car drove pretty much normally and was able to hold revs on neutral/with the clutch disengaged and so I searched the internet for advice and found out that it might just be the limp home mode enabled, which was exactly was going on.
I erased the codes once again, did exactly what is in the video. (push to the right!) and now everything is working again.
My dumb ass is very thankful for you and hopefully, if anybody as dumb/clueless as me runs into similar issues, this comment may help a little.
You just made my day today, you just saved me 100 bucks for a used throttle . In fact i was working on my 01 Saab 9-5 aero for 3 hrs when i decide to check UA-cam besides google when I discover your trick. Keep up the good work sir and thank you so much!
So far, so good. After months of fighting with the codes over and over, this may be the cure I needed. Thanks!
No problem, glad to help. It is a really easy procedure anyone can do. Helps a lot with diagnosis throttle body problems.

Right on the money, been dealing with this shit for weeks, put a different TB on and everything and this is all it was the whole time
Mate you are awsome, i took my B205E 02 saab conv to the mechaninc and he fixes saabs occasionally and he said it needed a new throttle body. I followed your steps and it worked like a charm. now idles perfeclty and canceled light... your a legend mate..... great video and easy to follow.
Same setup on my 2003 9-5 2.3t linear. I believe it will work on 9-5s on up to 2010 but not sure. You move the "spring" (it's the end of that wire that wraps around the black wheel several times) to the driver side. I was able to do it easily with finger. No screw driver needed. Before I did this I cleared codes with a cheap obd-2 reader and then I disconnected the battery. Also found a vacuum tube that was completely disconnected from throttle body that I slipped back on. Ran great for about 25 miles and then having some more jerking/bucking issues but not as bad as before. I suspect maybe throttle body gasket leak or something like that. But no home limp mode yet. So glad I found this online and was able to save a tow/garage bill. Thank you for posting.
I just installed a new turbocharger, and the car would run great for a while and then Warning lights and stalling at low revs. I watched this video and 5 minutes later car is running great and all the warning lights have cleared. Thanks!
Great info old chap. Helped me out a lot. Many thanks....
Outstanding! Thank you for an easy to follow video.
Well done!
You don't know how much you have just saved me with this video... Last year I forked out over £400 after a garage blamed it on the throttle sensor and changed the whole unit saying the sensor can't be replaced alone. The problem started again last week until this vid!. Problem solved in five minutes!. Now I feel like Slapping the bastard mechanics next time I see them!! Power to the people!!!!
TY! been on my edge trying to figure it out on my own.. good easy video..
Hello. Glad I can help you out. You want to be sure the cogged wheel moves separate from the throttle cable. If it moves with the cable, it is in limp mode and a reset is needed. There are numerous reasons why it goes into limp mode. Most of the time it is either one of the two position sensors or the internal wire insulation coming apart which grounds out a circuit. Here in the states, there are a couple rebuilders but I tend to replace them with new units on clients cars.
Major thanks for this. Very helpful.
1. Check throttle bore and throttle plate for excessive dirt and physical binding, clean as necessary.
2. The codes must be cancelled with an OBDII or Saab equivalent scanner. Turn off the ignition switch and wait 10 seconds before resetting the throttle linkage.
3. Reset the throttle by removing the cover from the throttle linkage on the passenger side of the throttle body. Look at the throttle body, from the passenger side of the car, with eyes at fender height. See approximately a 5 mm length of straight wire protruding straight downward from the bottom of the limp home solenoid housing on the rear of the throttle body.
4. Use the left forefinger to gently push the protruding end of this wire toward the driver's side of the car about 3-5 mm. Hold the wire in this position.
5. Gently rotate the Black plastic toothed cam, on the passenger side of the throttle body, in a counter-clockwise direction. Will hear a slight ratcheting sound and a "snap" when the cam has reached the reset position.
6. Release the wire with the left finger.
7. Test drive.
great video man, thanks!
Omg worked like a charm, I lubed it and no more CEL at all!
Thanks for the vid! I thought you had to take the whole throttle body apart for that!
Omg! Thank u sooooo much!!! Helped me out so gad Damn much!
Thank you for this video! I have a v6 and found that the same thing applies. The spring to move is facing up though. To clear the code, I just pulled fuse 17 for 15 minutes or so.
never mind, I just got a lil' mean with it and it worked like a charm! Thank you so......................................much for making this very helpful video sir! You ROCK :)
Great video!
THanks a ton man!!!
One thing you should also do is pull the battery cable to reset the CPU, this will ensure that all codes are cleared..
THANKS!
Thanks, that's what I needed !
A clean up will be nessessary off case which usually is the root corse.
brute
thank you for the video-very handy ....
@JustinHiFi agreed. my limp home kicked in because of a known vacuum leak i had. i kept driving on it and made it kick in, so i had to all this to reset the limp home mode. so far so good.
Great video. One tip is on my 2002 9-3 you have to push the end of the throttle spring in towards the throttle body to release the limp home notched black wheel. I think the video showed you moving it out or away from the throttle body and that did not work on my SAAB. But thanks for the video!
Great video! Hope it works!
Thank you, my friend , one kiss in the mouth from Mexico City
regards
pancho
@Animelegend1987 Yep, sounds like a potential LOM. To be safe have the code read for the CEL. You can also pull the battery cables off, reset the throttle and see if it goes back into LOM.
Great videi thanks
I had to pull the engine fuse, seventeenth, and then do the stunt showed in this vid. That did the trick for me.
Excellent, thank you.
great video, just picked up a 99 beater, I was wondering what causes this? Simply age or does it just happen to pop into limp mode every now and again?
Did you have a little gear icon with a explanation mark insode it on your dash when it was put into limp mode
Nice video! How about limp mode reset for a 1990 900 2.0 Turbo? -thanks
Thanks!!
what cause the saab to go into limp home mode? and thanx you are a great help buddy!
@GoddardCraig Did you remove the battery cable while resetting the TB? If the fault codes are stored in the ECM at key on, it will activate the LHM solenoid causing it to go back into LHM. Best is to remove the battery cables while doing the reset. If after this it still enters LHM, the TB needs to be replaced.
Also It has to be reminded that using a flat head screwdriver push the spring you see towards the spiny gear I mean push to your right side the spring spans counterclockwise along with the gear
thanks.
I have this high idle problem after the check engine light comes on. The check engine reads out as an error from the throttle body. But after resetting the check engine, I have good running idle but a kind of numb feeling throttle.
@piffdaddy420 T-5 does not have an electronic throttlebody. If you have TPS codes, the sensor is on the side of the TB. Just a simple swap.
Wish I watched this earlier..... could have saved me a hell of a lot of money and heartache thanks to crap mechanics who could learn from this!
Its a good idea to battery pull to reset the codes when you reset your TB becuse what ever caused it is still active, I got limp home mode from a random misfire and the code was still active and kept tripping the limp home until i battery pulled.
Oh sorry and one more thing my car has the cog on the throttle body, and my car is a 2002 SAAB 9-3 SE turbo would this be applicable to my car? it should right? cause after your very usefull information i checked my throttle body and the cog moves with the throttle not without, thank you for your genrous time once again.
What year and model? US spec? If it has the electronic throttlebody (Trionic 7) the Air Mass Meter could be installed incorrectly leading to a trouble code. With your stalling, is the check engine light on?
My throttle actuator is out of range, will reseting it help?
Thanks this video, I saved about 900EUR (1300$) !!
I did this simple trick on my 9-5 2,3L (year 2001), and it worked perfectly. Without OBD tool, I pulled the fuse 17 for one second. It resets the CPU and clears the check engine / tcs off lights. After 100 miles, still working perfectly ! Pierre-Yves Andri, from Belgium.
Sorry for the delay in reply, I did not get an email update. Usually a thin spray based lubricant. I usually use a dry lube spray. Im sure many other types would work just fine as well.
t-5 does come with electronic throttlebody on tcs 9000 cars.
Would this apply to 2006 9-3 turbo?
hey, i looked at your video, and had the same problem. but i cant turn that black wheel backwards, is it difficult? i was standing on the right side of the car and pushed a metal piece "up". thanks
HOLY SANTA CLAUSE SHIT! This video saved me so much $. thank you so much.
Thanks Justin DUUUDE
@ksmirnov1289 If it continues to go into LOM, replace the throttlebody.
need help, my 2001 is on limp mode. the car accelerate and drive fine but the rpm is too high on idle, when i did what the video shows then the trottle bode won't accelerate the car so i turn the ign off and then on and it went back to limp and i can accelerate again...... What's the porpuse of this limp mode?
@artstran If it goes back into LHM every time, must replace the throttlebody assembly. Internal failure.
ok on the throttle body limp home mode ordeal would that cause my saab not to start? such as the fuel pump? i think that iam not getting any power to the fuel pump uuuugh!,and one more thing buddy when you stated in the video "move the spring to the side" where? which direction? and how? i tried to do it and it wouldn't move, maybe iam doing it wrong? oh and my saab is a 2002 93 se thank you for your time bud.
I have a T5...Is there a similar procedure?
So, If I am understanding right, the Limp Mode sets the throttle to operate like a old wire throttle? Like on my old 96' Toyota? So your gas pedal is always connected to the throttle?
+TheDJGabizz Yes the pedal is not electric. There is a cable that connects the pedal to the actuator arm on the TB.
Stellar..many thanks...would this apply as well to 2010 Sportcombi 2.0T?
Thanks for all you do!
Difficult to say exactly without the vehicle in front of me, but if your having surging at idle, it can be from a bad TB, or possibly vacuum leaks.
Does anyone know if the steps are the same for a 2005 9-3 model? Any help would be very much appreciated. I am having a hell of a time finding the spring and black cog....
#justinhifi I own a saab 9-3 2003 do you have any idea what type of powerstering fluid do I need to put on it. Hope u can help. And thanks for the vedios!!! Very helpfull
pentosin chf 11s
Just to add to the video... You MUST use Tech2 to clear the fault code AFTER resetting the throttle body or the unit will re-enter Limp home in a few driving cycles.
Is there anyone who makes springs for these throttle bodies? I reset the limp mode on my car, cleaned the throttle, but p1260 is still showing up. Weak spring? If so, how can I get one?
Mir hat es auch geholfen. Habe aber erst die Feder nach links (also weg vom Gehäuse) gedrückt. Man muss sie aber hin zum Gehäuse drücken. das war auf dem Video nicht richtig zu erkennen.
Hi! Great vid, after I saw this I vent tinkering with my car. The throttle body, or the spring thingy, jumps right back into limphome mode every time I start the engine. Is the throttle body FUBAR or is there something else I can try, before replacing it?
I hope it's solved by now! Anyway, be sure to clear the codes first before resetting or it won't reset.
I cleaned the thorttle body, car went into limp mode, i reset it and i cant still accelerate faster then 40km/h?? what to do?
I can’t find this on my 9-3 vector
What if the inner cog is stuck? My 9-5 idles at 2.5-3k revs and it's burning my wallet and my heart. Please help!
My saab 9-5 only needed the minus on the battery unplugged for 10 sec,
.................................because it is hard to see exactly where the screw driver is positioned at because everything was in the way and i couldn't see it
There is no such procedure for the 9-3 Sport Sedan (+03) with Trionic 8. If the throttle is setting DTCs then it must be replaced. It will enter its own limp mode and clear once the fault code is cleared and problem corrected.
The black gear looking part won't turn for me
just pull the control module fuses, so you don't have to reset the clock all of the time ;)
I can't get the black cogwheel to rotate backwards to reset the LHM :( please help
Shilo Eisberner there's a small black box screwed to the throttle body that activates the LHM. You might have to hold back the small armature that comes out of this little box out of the way of the cog shown in the video.
im having a pain in the balls with my streering angle sensor, ive tried to locate it from the diagram, but, i just didnt dee where it supposedly is, AND my air bag sensor is always on, where is the sensor? is it dirty or is the clock bad???
Why doesn't sid tell you you're in limp ?
Never mind!!!! I just fix it =] .. I was doing it wrong, I forgot to clear the codes =D.. My bad!!!!!!!!
You don't know how much you just saved me with this 5 minute solution!!, had the same problem last year and got charged over £400 for a whole new unit after being told it was the throttle sensor and needing to replace the whole unit as the sensor can't be replaced alone. Power to the people n F^
That's different. The throttle body in that case is for Traction Control. A completely different 'animal'.
Not necessarily dodgy mechanics, just mechanics who don't know the inner workings of the Saab engine.
Move to the Side?! What Side?! Eastside west Side?! Homiside?! Cmon man.. upside? Downside?!
No my car is idling by it's self! SOS
was about to order throttle body, stinkin Saab's. I own a repair shop, never seen anything like this. very dumb design. I got it reset, but it still moves somewhat. may need a ziptie..........LOL
arrête de bouger et va a l'essentiel. Ta vie on s'en fout
#justinhifi I own a saab 9-3 2003 do you have any idea what type of powerstering fluid do I need to put on it. Hope u can help. And thanks for the vedios!!! Very helpfull

Pentosin CHF-11s is what you want to use.
The container is green metal, and it's rectangular in shape.
Most parts shops in my area (Seattle-ish) keep it behind the counter, which is most likely due to the fact that it's about $30 for a liter.
