@@GabrielVargaOfficial Nope, their "untested in actual combat" ways are flawed, but it is important that your followers know that your method is the best. You are either in to counter or out. not blocking or eating their heel.
Most of these defenses requires good reading of your opponent which I don't have. I think Shane's technique fits me better. Thanks to everyone for sharing their knowledge!
Yep. The teep to the arse works well with me and my fighting style. The advantage is that it's a good choice even if it's a fake or a spinning backfist.
This was a great colab, and I love that everyone's ideas and experience was given validation and listened to. Super fun video and all of my favourite martial artist UA-camrs.
I think that these large collab videos are some of the best martial arts content I've seen in both entertainment and education! Thank you very much guys
I've had my ribs cracked twice from spinning back kicks. Both times they threw them as counters to me stepping in with punches. Very difficult to do any of these defenses when you are getting countered with this kick.
Yeah, the timing is so tight that a counter-counter is functionally out of the question in those scenarios. In that case, it becomes more a matter of reading tendencies and trying to bait out the attacks you expect, which is more on the psychological side to a fight. For example, if you fake the advance with distracting jabs or cut an angle immediately (instead of closing in one straight line), they’re kicking when and where you want them to kick [ie. *not* into your ribs right as you’re about to throw a punch combo]. Knowing and being able to read the right cues takes good tips (like seeing that heel pivot) and truckloads of experience, maybe even dedicated drilling. Sometimes it really is as simple [but not easy] as fundamentals, like footwork and the geometry of range/timing. With Shane’s teep to the butt/hip/thigh, you use a straight line to defeat a circle. With Gabe’s angle cut, especially for the back kick, you use a circle (well, triangle?) to defeat a straight line. Hope those mind-game tips can help with countering the counterattacks!
I like that you all show a different variety. My favorites are going to the back and a variation to Shane's kicking the ass, I go for the quad with a front or turned out push kick. These collaborations are fun to watch.
Other options: - since the spinning side kick requires the opponent's lead leg to stay grounded, you can step off angle and get a hard rear roundhouse kick to their lead leg while the spinning side kick misses - step off angle and catch the spinning side kick like how Icymike did, then transition the grip under your armpit, get a keylock grip around their shin, and twist over into a very powerful ankle lock As much as I love the spinning back/side kick, briefly losing sight of your target, turning your back, and sticking a limb out all at the same time has some dangerously exploitable weaknesses
The great Jerry Trimble, a memorable champion from the old days of kickboxing used the angled step move with the cross counter punch. It was a savage KO. Jerry Trimble VS BJ Lavota.
I put my knee up to stop them too. I usually charge in with knee up to slam the knee into their heel and knock them down when I see a spinning side kick. I'm usually not fast enough to step to the outside. I love these collabs!
Some good stuff. I like to cut the angle on the step in, and hook to the body/ back. Super painful shot if you can get it kind of bottom of the rib cage. That punch seems to flow very well for me with that kind of 11 o’clock step.
I love the number of different ways to counter that were covered here. Spinning back kicks are a little harder to counter as they come straight up the middle and not out from the side. It would be great to see a collab on that in the future as well.
When I started Muay That in 1991 we were the first Muay Thai gym in my city. We got a lot of interest and challenges from existing schools that wanted to see what MT was all about. My instructor taught us that kicks are either going to come straight for us (teep) or around (roundhouse). We used the same defence for all straight kicks and another defence for all round kicks. Worked pretty well against lots of TKD and karate guys. Based on 1990s Muay Thai training I would take a half step back, catch with the front hand and kick the standing leg out.
The side step that Gabriel demonstrated was the technique that I learned when I was kickboxing back in the 80s and 90s. I think that the side step is the most effective from my experience.
I cannot believe that everybody is there!! All you guys videos are fantastic!! I learned alot from you guys!! Kickers, strikers !! Jkd, Tkd or Thaiboxing & kickboxing love it ALL!!!
Great stuff, love seeing all the different approaches demonstrated and discussed in a chill, open-minded way. This is exactly how this should work, far more insightful than "this is the way" stuff. Love it.
I love these collab videos, they’re soooo fun to watch. Literally makes my day so much better. Everything feels so bleak rn but when I watch these collabs and everyone is having fun laughing, it makes me so happy
These are all great! The cross-check I'm gonna have to try more. For regular non-spinning side kicks, I find most of the same things work if you bait the kick. A big thing that helped me for non-side kicks is never to be in the open stance. If you have to be open stance, a Thai hop is about all you can do. If I can bait the kick, something else that works on others and has worked on me is to drop an elbow on their ankle. Hurts even when done lightly.
Where is wonderboy? His gym is in South Carolina too. Ya. I Remeber WB talked about jamming the side kick. Varga blessing these guys with the knowledge
Gabriel's defense is best. It works against spinning side kick to mid or high level, and spinning high kick. And it doesn't rely on superhuman speed and reaction time.
These are awesome video, thanks Gab. Great to see different perspectives. I saw a great defense where the guy cut the angle, then stamped down on the back of the standing leg.
I love collabs and I love all these guys! Your interactions with each other and your knowledge are what make these videos special. Keep it up. And definitely get some Wonderboy in there when all your schedules align!
Really great to see these collabs happening. Gabriel’s channel deserves much higher numbers...will definitely help to pay for all those incoming baby expenses that are surely just around the corner now!! 😃🙏
This ties into @hard2hurt video with @fightTIPS on when sucker punching can be used for combat sports, if you sidestep that back kick and get behind it's the perfect time
Gabriel is a bonafide kickboxing world champion but still letting the peons show off their tech- respect. Shane and Gabriel had the real stuff I’ve seen it work many times.
to icy mike - next time u jam and grab that backkick like that will call for a hammerfist to yo chin or neck thrown same time as that backkick (a two level attack in one move).
My favourite that I’ve seen (I’ve not been able to pull it off yet) is to side step of the center line and kick the leg they’re standing on and take them off their feet.
I actually like to try and land spinning side kicks. Since I know that they take long, I never initiate one when my opponent has the time and the dynamics on his side. If "step behind back" or "teep him in his ass" defense worked, it means I chose the timing for my kick terribly wrong. Those defenses should not normally work. Using the lead hand to block or swipe the kick is a huge risk. The same spinning kick can be a mid- or high- side kick, or a spinning hook kick, there's 3 directions to defend, and committing the hand to any one of them is an open invitation.
LOLLLLL ICY MIKE He's that kid in class you always just love to see joke around during class and in this case YOU GET A SPINNING BACK KICK AND YOU GET A SPINNING BACK KICKED...LOLOL
God, this was such an enjoyment AND educational to watch. I love delivering teeps and I've had some issues with kickboxers, since I'm used to muay thai, and their spinning kicks that I'm so delighted to try to just... teep their ass 🍑 Great content with everyone in usually watching separately! ♥
Awesome video guys and such useful information. I love how all of you added humor into the mix but still focused on getting your point across to us. Well done! Keep making more videos guys.👍🏽
I like to use the arm on the same side (i.e. my right arm if opponent throws the right leg, the inverse of ed stahl's) to sweep the attacking leg outwards (i.e. from inside to outside). the momentum lets me step off the centre line (so basically the same position that sensei seth takes) to counterattack.
Thanks Gabe. Notice that the novice guys with no professional fight experience gave the worse defense and counters. Eating spinning side kicks opens you to getting knocked out with a setup and killing whatever limbs you are using to defend. Also, rolling with a heel kick in SPARRING is not the same as in a fight or a padded boxing match. The heel is not forgiving even when it grazes.
