  • How me and my serger (Singer Professional 5), became friends,
This is my first on only serger, a bit intimidating to say the least, it has so many control, cone of thread, it's load, run too fast, heavy.
And how the heck does one even thread this beast.
I have done some post on threading so no covering that here, but what I did to get comfortable with my machine.
Went and got an old bed sheet and cut it up into strips 5" wide and 8" long.
Then went to my machine and thread a 4 thread 2 looper stitch according to the workbook, and got it working and making a good looking stitch.
I then went thought, changing one setting/control at a time to the max and lowest setting and some in between. And when done with that setting, I returned back to default setting and went on to the next setting, I started with left needle, then right, then on to the loopers, then stitch length, then stitch width, then differential feed, then presser foot pressure.
After I changed a setting I compared it to the first default setting stitch, so I can see what each of the different setting and controls do.
And I did this for most of the stitches, I skipped the rolled hem (I have never had to use this on a garment).
Took over four hours, used up nearly entire cones of thread, and had a huge bucket full of stitch samples.
What this did was make me familiar with my machine and have a better understanding of what each setting or control does.

Dear Mr Needle, I would be very grateful if you could take closer shots of the loopers and settings, otherwise you are very good at explaining the procedure.

I have only used 3 needle wide overstitch so far. I have followed the threading directions but when I sew a hem and pull the needles up (turning the wheel toward the back) the thread almost always get jammed I have to force the fabric out and the thread comes out of the left or right needle. Any suggestions? I'm ready to return it, it's so frustrating

amy schmidt ...don’t turn the wheel backwards. Don’t turn it at all. Just run the the foot off the material and leave a tail. Cut the thread.
