Can you imagine the person that invented these things? Ive always been amazed by the creativity in these complex machines with thousands of tiny little moving parts.
You are by far the best tutor! Clear and close ups. I watch so many different instructors who think they are clear but forget that certain parts are so iffy. Especially when it comes to the mechanical parts. I.E. threading underneath items.Thank you for being you.
I’m at court out of state thinking about chasing my dream fashion. Instead of stressing I bumped into your channel and you help me finish a blank spot in my dream💪🏾💯 no cap we locked in🔐

Excellent tutorial and convinced me to buy the exact same serger for my personal and business needs. I really enjoy your tutorials because you are very detailed in each step. Learning so much from your channel. Keep up the great work.
After a bit of research I decided on getting this machine. Unfortunately it’s out of stock everywhere, but soon as it’s available I’ll be able to make an attempt at not losing my mind trying to thread it! Haha
Yeah it s crazy hard to find machines at the moment. I just upgraded to the entry level Brother serger and I LOVE it! I'll be doing a video on that soon for sure. Keep in mind, you don't really "need" a serger unless you plan on selling products or competing in cosplay or fashion shows. You can certainly start sewing without a serger until you want to add more polish to your projects
Ok dude, third time watching this video beginning to end. Just ordered one on Amazon. Still scares the crap out of me. Thank you so much for posting. Certain that I will watch this again.
lol happy to help buddy, I'm planning to make another "How to use a Serger video" soon to be even more clear with better lighting and camera work. Once you get it working, you'll LOVE it!
The tweezer part made me think DUH. Even just to thread a needle on a regular machine. I have a thousand tweezers and forceps and never occurred to me!
Always been afraid to tackle a serger but came across on recently to check out for the thrift store for a dog rescue. Usually just do the many sewing machines that are donated. I've been watching every video I can find on threading it and learn something new every time. So far I don't have it just right but will keep trying cause I'll probably be the one to buy it from them once I get it perfect. thx
Thank you thank you thank you!! I have this serger and I did thread it once when I first got it. I haven’t used it since but am going to be hemming some pants and needed to change the threat to just black. So very helpful
Thank you so much for watching! I actually just shot a new serger video today, it's another beginner video with a different serger. I think now it's time to show people some projects you can do with it :) Thanks for the recommendation!
Omg!!! You are sooo awesome!!! I love everything about this video!!! Thank you soooooo much!! Following 2022!💃🏽new to sewing 🧵 You are truly making this soo much easier for me today!!! I feel like a kid in the candy store!!!🤣😂
Excellent demo! I have a Brothers and thankful for the diagrams. I was hoping to see different techniques in using the serger. Right now I am only using it to finish the fray materials on bags.
Happy to help! I just got a Brother serger as well, setup is pretty much the same, but I'd like to shoot a video with that as well. Hope you're enjoying your projects this week!
I was wondering what a Serger Overlock machine was and now I know what it is and that machine does a great job too. Now I know, but I hope that I won't have to do that work though unless I can do similar work with my regular machine. I saw the work on some pants I have and now know what procedure the manufacturer did during the production process. Thanks for showing us how this is done using your machine.
Yep, sergers are great - you really only need one if you plan to start selling your work or taking commissions though. If you're just making clothing for yourself, you really don't need this machine since few people will see the inside seams :)
Thank you! Great tutorial! Looking to buy a serger (had no idea how they worked) and checking out you tube to find answers. Love your speed of teaching.
Great video, and very informative. My only suggestion would be to use a thread that is more easily visible. Some of the steps were really hard to see what was going on. I love it!
I use four different color thread cones on my serger. Only the left-most one shows anyway, and having different thread colors lets me more easily see which one I'm having trouble with.
I have a serger just like urs! at first it took me over 20 mins to thread it... but after using 2 tweezers and a ton of practice, I can thread it in a fraction of the time.
Two details to add: Cover the cones with spool socks to keep the thread from tangling. Also, cutting the chain right at the fabric will lead to unraveling unless you sew over it. When serging a hem, I'll use the end of the chain to go over the start, and finish by creating about 6" of chain. Then cut about 2" from the fabric, gently pull the loops straight, and tie a knot in the chain as close to the fabric as possible before cutting the rest off.
Good call on both points. Generally the seams I overlock get sewn into seams between panels in garment construction, so there is no threat of frayed overlock threads, and everything turns out looking very polished on the inside. In any other situation where it would be visible, I'd tie off the ends like you and put a drop of Fray Check on it. I appreciate your comments by the way, you certainly know your sewing techniques!
Excellent!! I'm actually planning another serger video with a different machine. I wanted to do a better video with better lighting and colored thread for each cone. Keep your eyes open for that if you need more support soon :)
Thanks! This video was so helpful. A friend gave me an old serger and I had a really hard time figuring out how to thread it until I watched your video.
Why did I think you had a Brother serger? Got my Brother Strong and Tough serger this week. To go with my Strong and Tough sewing machine and because I absolutely had to have a serger that came with the extension table. Not having one included with the ST150HDH was a disappointment. I just got the extension table for my sewing machine this week, so all is well now. Must go read the manual for my new serger. Took it out of the box, but have been reorganizing my sewing area. New shelves coming tomorrow so I expect to serge this week.
I just started sewing, and recently purchased the same serger you have, can you make a video in regards to the tension? Thank you. I love watching your videos, they are really informative!
This is a great entry level overlock machine for sure - I had it for many years before upgrading. Tension wise, I usually keep all dials at 4. If I notice a particular thread being a bit loose, I'll increase it slightly, but typically you want to keep them all pretty close to each other. Hope you enjoy all your projects this spring!
My 434 Singer serger has been used for over 40 years and I still dread any time I need to change colors. I have hoped that someone would have found an improved technique for threading. False hope! Great machine but one of the bigger stressers in my sewing room.
I guess there is a way to tie new thread cones to your thread while its threaded to change colors without re-threading from scratch - but I haven't gotten it to work yet. I should do some tests for a new video soon :)
i would love to get some ideas of how to use/alter old clothes and create something new. E.g. turn an old cashmere or wool sweater into gloves, or use lighter fabric for the arms and take an old sweater for the torso, i am curious about learning to reuse old clothes and fabric and adding some funk to them.
love this video. Wondering if you could do a video on seam repairs. For example, when my shirts come with 4 tags attached inside the side seam, I of course want to take them out but no matter how I do it I end up with a hole in the seam where the tags were. So I'd like to use a serger to repair it properly, instead of do the whole seam again.. I found a couple videos on it but they weren't the best, especially on how to clean up the ends of the repair.
I could probably do that, it's super easy. Just use a seam ripper where the tags are, pull the tags out, do a straight stitch on the inside seam, and then serge it clean. That might be all you need to know :)
Omg I just got a new Brother Serger and I absolutely LOVE it! I'm not used to a machine being so reliable, I haven't had to re-thread it since I got it, which is soooooo amazing!
@@TockCustom This is promising, thanks! I bought this Brother serger last year and am still too scared to thread it haha I'm going to try to be brave...soon
@@TockCustom Could you do a video on alternatives to serging (if you don't have the machine, but want that clean finish)? you touch on other ways in other videos.
How much of a flap do you leave for these inner serged seams? For example, I have a curved inner seam of a tunic top that is 5/8". I serged it, but it is still 5/8" and is rather "flappy." It looks pretty good, but would you recommend just running it through a second time right up against the outer seam? I am just nervous because it is curved and feeding it through is tricky.
I just got my first serger and it is the same one you have and I'm trying to figure what I need to set these to use it on faux fur for cosplay. Any thing will help thanks
Great tutorial! I am new to sewing and love your videos!! Quick question, where do you get your fabric from? The pants you show at the end as an example is a great pattern. Thanks again for the videos, I appreciate you!!
Thank you so much for watching! I get most of my fabric from local Joann Fabrics, or from Fabric.com There's so many great fabrics out there, hope you find some cool material to work with!
Loved your threading on the Serger machine, great job; However, I am doing the exact same way threading and my machine sounds like an accordion - I'm afraid I'm going to break it??? Help, what am i doing wrong?????
Hmmmm... This type of machine normally sounds much different than a sewing machine. Almost like a harmonica as its running slowly. You might be in good shape already, I say just go for it and see how it looks when it's done. If you hear any grinding or crunching sounds... please stop though lol
I’m brand new to sewing, and my spouse bought me a serger second hand (brand new, only used once). Should we have purchased something else for me to start with instead since I’ve never sewn before? Your video helped a lot with explaining how to thread but do I need to do an overlook stitch for every project?
Overlock machines are kind of "addons" to a typical sewing space. You can create some projects with a serger alone, but most projects will require that you sew with a traditional sewing machine first, and then serge the seams. Hopefully that makes sense. At least you wont have to buy a serger after you get your first sewing machine!!
Oh, you just run straight off the fabric, then put the new side of the fabric in through the machine and it will trim off and overlock the other edge. Perfect serged corners :)
I think sometimes I want a serger...then this...lol. How often do you have to rethread? I have seen a lot of people tie their thread at the top so they can avoid rethreading....
One it's threaded, you wont have to do this again until the thread run out, unless something goes wrong. Since I got my new Brother serger, I haven't had to re-thread it once! You can tie off the new threads, but sometimes it doesnt work, so I end up rethreading manually, which is a bummer. Maybe someone else has a good tutorial on doing that, but I can't get it to work yet :P
Hi Tock, thanks for posting this. You've a great teaching style and I learned some useful tips. Just wondered if you plan to do any clothing manufacturing videos? I have the same brother embroidery/sewing machine you demo'd, aren't they the best? Never lets me down, always a great result. Glad to see more guys involved in sewing too, it's really chilling. Greetings from North Wales UK. :-)
Hi. I'm thankful for you. I have sewn little projects with an old cheap machine but now I would like to go to a "higher level" just a little more than beginner. But also I would like to do embroidery. I looked to different Brothers machines. Which one do you suggest for a intermediate that combines sewing, embroidery and quilting if possible but not really a decision changer. Do you use the SE400 for your daily use or which one?
I love my SE-400 for sewing a small embroidery jobs. Brother has a newer model now (Brother SE-600 and 625) for sewing/embroidery combo machines, and they no longer manufacture the SE-400. I still use it pretty much every day, and then I use my Heavy Duty ST150HDH for topstitching and thicker projects. Hope this helps!! Thanks for watching :)
Yes, in fact all needles are interchangeable between all machines (except maybe Juki's or industrial machines), so you're good to go with pretty much any brand or style :)
It doesn't really add seam strength, but it will preserve the fabric for longer, so clothes and accessories don't wear out as quickly. Also has some cosmetic benefits. Thanks for watching!
You all seem to find it so easy but I am an absolute beginner with an overlocker, it would be so much easier if you had used the same colour cotton as each threading guide so that it was easier for beginners like me to see. The black cotton just blends into the back ground. So disappointed. Perhaps if you could angle a touch at the mechanics it would help. It just all seems so difficult I think I am going to return it, and stick with my sewing machine. Much more straightforward.
I've been playing wih a serger in a sewing class, and I love it:). Looks intimidating to thread. Thanks for showing this...will play with someone else's machine😀
First of all... thanks for the great video!!!! 😎 secondly, Mother use to professionally sew and she used both of her machines ALOT!!! 😱I never built up my confidence or made the time to practice even though she tried to show me at times...😞now that she is no longer here... I wanted to dust off my sewing machine and serger THIS YEAR...on Feb 2, 2020, and try to give it a go to make her proud as she watches over me from above.🤗❤️🥰 And lastly, sir, forget your stickers...shoutout to that hair care regimen!!! Best brushed hair ever!!!😂 Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment! I hope that you enjoy getting into sewing, and that you feel the love of your mother as you start creating new projects
I really appreciate your no-nonsense, relaxed approach to sewing and serging. I wish this video had been around when I got my serger. I let it set in the box for a while because I was so nervous. Then one day I got the manual, read through the threading instructions and decided I could do it - I just had to actually sit down and do it. And yes, the first few times it can seem intimidating, but it is possible and really not so scary.
I know what you mean - back when I learned, there weren't videos like this. Really helps to share this information in a precise and simplified way to help people get started :) Thanks for watching, hope you're having a terrific week!
I'm going to re-shoot this whole video with my new serger, and use colored thread to help people see a lot better. This is on my list of things to do :)
Beginner here, and a coworker just offered to give a serger to me. I have not even fired up the Singer 4411 that I got for Christmas yet. Should I even touch the serger right now or just wait? I have sewing experience, but from 20 years ago when I was a teen. I assume that I should just focus on the Sewing machine right now. My plan is to make tool rolls, tool bags, and organizers. Btw, I am going to get the serger either way, as it comes with other supplies and I am a hoarder of tools, machines, and equipment.
Not yet, I've been meaning to shoot a video on it for a while but have been busy with too many other projects. I will absolutely be doing that as soon as I'm able :)
Great job. Thanks so much for this. You have a great voice too....devoid of creakiness. Good camera angles too. I don't even have a serger yet so I don't know why I'm watching this but I am learning to sew. :D

With a serger, what is the best way to turn a corner, as you can't pivot, please, thank you
Oh, you just run straight off the fabric, then put the new side of the fabric in through the machine and it will trim off and overlock the other edge. Perfect serged corners :)
Great thank you.
Thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching
For sure! I'm planning on doing men's Jean's, button down shirts, vests, and men's t-shirts soon. Should be a lot of fun!
WOW!
I don't get a lot of WOWs, so thank you!😀
I have a question. Can you use universal needles?
Yes, in fact all needles are interchangeable between all machines (except maybe Juki's or industrial machines), so you're good to go with pretty much any brand or style :)
@@TockCustom Thanks alot. We see weling hats, surging is new to our business. Great videos BTW.
Cool. Does a Serger have any strength benefit or os it just aesthetic?
It doesn't really add seam strength, but it will preserve the fabric for longer, so clothes and accessories don't wear out as quickly. Also has some cosmetic benefits. Thanks for watching!
You are very good🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Thank you very much!
pls what is "serger" I can`t find it in dictionary?
Always leave a tail on the stitch thread, never should cut right after where the fabric ends
Oh my goodness, what the hell have I just impulse bought.
You need to use four thread colors and better lighting.
I re-filmed this video with 4 thread colors and better lighting a couple months ago. It turned out way better!
I re-shot this video recently, better lighting and colored threads. Should be a lot easier to help out!
Thank you so much, will sit and have a look now. Many thanks. Jan
Serger Jesus gathers you into his arms, smoothes your edges , and makes you more presentable.
May all your seams be blessed
this is the first simple tutorial i could follow thank u
As always, love your videos. Don't have a surger but great info for the future if I get one.
Thanks a ton for watching! Hope this helps if you ever need it.
I've been playing wih a serger in a sewing class, and I love it:). Looks intimidating to thread. Thanks for showing this...will play with someone else's machine😀
It is pretty intimidating the first few times... just make sure you have lots of coffee and relaxing music. Hope you have a wonderful new year!
I spent 2 hours threading my serger. Should have watched your video first. lol.
Sometimes I still spend 2 hours threading mine. It certainly takes a lot of practice. But once you get it running... it's smooth as glass :)
Thanks for the great information. Very helpful.
Thanks so much for watching! Happy to hear this was helpful :)
OMG THANK YOU!!!! I just bought a serger and you made this so freaking easy for me!!! Appreciate ya!!!
Really helps to share this information in a precise and simplified way to help people get started :)
Thanks for watching, hope you're having a terrific week!
Fabulous thank you for sharing ❤💋
Thank you so much for watching :D
Thank you - I am trying to get back to using my Singer 14u34 - yes old now but I barely used it. Your video and explanation are very clear.
Aaaaaaaaaaand now to watch ALL of your videos lol
Hope some of them are good! Thanks for watching :D
Those jeans are freaking amazing! I'm so glad I just found you!!!!! I'm a new fan after this video! I'm off to watch your other videos!!!! Thanks!🤩🥰
Just a lil more light. Otherwise... fantastic!
I'm going to re-shoot this whole video with my new serger, and use colored thread to help people see a lot better. This is on my list of things to do :)
Tock Custom you’re definitely doing a good job of teaching ppl how to sew!!
12:44 cool jeans!
Thank you! Those are some of my favorite new pants :)
How can I get my presser foot higher to release my fabric?..I broke a needle because of this. Also, what size needles can I use for the serger 1034D?
Do do you have a tutorial on the jeans that you are showcasing in this video
Not yet, I've been meaning to shoot a video on it for a while but have been busy with too many other projects. I will absolutely be doing that as soon as I'm able :)
@@TockCustom oh cool I'll be waiting for that, are you east coast or west coast?
Great job. Thanks so much for this. You have a great voice too....devoid of creakiness. Good camera angles too. I don't even have a serger yet so I don't know why I'm watching this but I am learning to sew. :D
I love your videos. Would you make a sew along for a pair of jeans? Also, where do you find your jeans material? Thank you for making the videos.
im so glad I found your videos. I have a singer heavy duty. I how do i lift foot up higher for thicker fabric such as stretch knit headbands.
I love your videos. I learn so much. This just confirms why I prefer Brother brands. lol. Seems a little easier to thread to me.
