  • The Mark Twain Prize recognizes people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist and creator of memorable characters, Samuel Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled and outraged many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective of social injustice and personal folly. He revealed the great truth of humor when he said "against the assault of laughter nothing can stand."

The inaugural Mark Twain Prize was presented to Richard Pryor during the first annual Kennedy Center Celebration of American Humor, October 20, 1998. The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber and is televised annually. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception. Previous recipients of the Mark Twain include Richard Pryor (1998), Jonathan Winters (1999), Carl Reiner (2000), Whoopi Goldberg (2001), Bob Newhart (2002), Lily Tomlin (2003), Lorne Michaels (2004), Steve Martin (2005), Neil Simon (2006), Billy Crystal (2007), George Carlin (2008), Bill Cosby (2009, rescinded in 2018) Tina Fey (2010), Will Ferrell (2011), Ellen DeGeneres (2012), Carol Burnett (2013) Jay Leno (2014), Eddie Murphy (2015), Bill Murray (2016), David Letterman (2017), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (2018).

Eloquent and elegant mind, very American, 'like-mind' of Whoopi Goldberg and Mark Twain. Just brilliant. Laughter is 'disarming' in truth.

    Whoopi looks beautiful!!
She’s such an icon and when I hear her, I remember nutmeg mccain and the horrible at she treated Whoopi .I don’t want to think about her but honestly that’s what came up. I was thinking how wonderful with me was and who would dare treat her that way Which reminded me of that horrible horrible person

Good actress, loved her in Star Trek, but when was she ever funny? She was the fourth Mark Twain honoree (Pryor, Winters, Reiner, Goldberg), but she’s not the fourth funniest person in America and maybe not the four-thousandth. It’s ridiculous that they honored her twelve years before Carol Burnett. And by the way, Mark Twain was a writer, but in twenty-some years only one writer (Neil Simon) has received the award. If they want to give the award almost exclusively to actors they should call it the Lucille Ball Award.

The first of these awards was given to Richard Pryor in 1998. Jonathan Winters was next in 1999, followed by Carl Reiner in 2000. "The Mark Twain Prize recognizes people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to ... Mark Twain." The very first of these awards maybe should have been given to Will Rodgers, albeit posthumously, because he was the first great social commentator and satirist of the 20th century, truly impacting American society in ways similar to Mark Twain. I have no issue with Pryor, Winters and Reiner receiving this prize, I just think that if it's meant to recognize those who were in some way comparable to Mark Twain, Will Rodgers stands out above all others.
Looking at who else has been given this prize, Whoopi Goldberg was the fourth honoree, in 2001. Now, this DOES seem to be a strange choice to make. I mean, Carol Burnett didn't get this prize until 2013, and from my frame of reference, had much more of an impact on American society than Whoopi up to 2001. Billy Crystal got the prize in 2007, and glaringly absent from the list is Robin Williams. I could see Whoopi, Billy and Robin being honored together in 2001 because of their work together to create Comic Relief, but just Whoopi, alone, getting the fourth ever Mark Twain Prize in 2001 doesn't really seem to make much sense to me. And again, the exclusion of Robin Williams doesn't make much sense to me, either. Johnny Carson is also notably missing from the list, and all I can say is John Stewart better be next in line!

Sorry, but this comment is laughable. An EGOT winner being fourth to win this prize doesn’t make much sense? Whoopi has excelled in every medium of comedy and art. I love Carroll Burnett but Whoopi has had just as much if not more impact and does not need to be honored at the same time as two men as you propose when she’s made quite an impact on her own, beyond just Comic Relief. Robin should have been honored as well but I’m sure he was thrilled she was chosen.

Jay Leno did not deserve this prize, but at least he was a consistent comedian.
Whoopi is the least-deserving recipient of this prize of all.
And Jerry deserved it instead of Julia.
And certainly Michael deserved it more than Julia.
And also David deserved it more than Julia.
I feel like some of this award’s recipients are affirmative action, virtue-signaling, politically correct additions. It cheapens the weight of the honor this award brings.
Then again, it is given in D.C. by liberals. Sometimes fools are on the horse as kings walk alongside. What a disappointing world.

I honestly took pause as well. My first reaction was, Whoopie is a likable person, however if you follow her public life she all-too focuses on intersectionalism and victim-virtue culture. She has actually argued for controlling "hate speech", only to be then subjectively defined by her and therefore, she's ultimately against free speech. I admit, she did not deserve this award.

@@orestescr3415 - So many true humorists should have received this award before W.G., but fine, lower your expectations in order to allow a half-wit to win. I am glad I do not rely on your taste to live my life.

I don't think that Mark Twain discussed his underwear with millions of people. He had something funny to offer besides dirty jokes and bad language. I used to be a fan. Now all she has to offer is the politics of hate.

    • @usefamin
      @usefamin 4 роки тому +6

She never hates, she's extremely level-headed. She not only calls out bullshit, but she offers solutions to fix the bullshit once called out. That's why she's different than the rest.
