From Nvidia 4070 to 4070ti Super - 4080/4090 not needed for 4k? | Unscripted, One take

  • Nvidia RTX 4080 or 4090, or even an AMD 7900 XTX is are not necessary for 4k gaming.
I recently upgraded from an Nvidia RTX 4070 graphics card to an RTX 4070ti Super. My aim was to consistly be above 60fps for new AAA titles like Avatar Frontier of Pandora and Alan Wake 2, and close to 120fps for older ones like Miles Morales, and RDR2.
I purchased my gaming PC to play in 1440p however that resolution upscale poorly to 4k. Therefore I started playing at 4k which looks cripser and more vivid. However my frame rate was well below 60fps with ray tracing. I considered a 4080 but that would have required me to upgrade my power supply from 650watts to 850watss. Furthermore at £1k the 4080 Super is too expensive if a 5080 is just around the corner. The 7900XTX was considered but it's too close tot he 4080 in price and ai features like DLSS and frame generation are too awesome to overlook. A PSU upgrade would have been neccessary too.
As a result I settled for the 4070ti Super because it has 16GB of RAM like the 4080 which is handy for 4k gaming, DLSS and Frame Generation but at a £300 discount. I like how gorgeous the GeForce RTX™ 4070 Ti SUPER 16G GAMING X SLIM looks in my Fractal Design North Case. My previous card was a lovely graphics card but it looked a bit puny in my gaming PC.

    My exact system, just 32GB (3600Mhz/1933 CL16) RAM for me and I'm using a 40" 155Hz MSI Ultrawide 3440x1440 (DSRx1.78) rendering at 4587x1920.
Also playing most games at slightly over 4k using DSR with generally between 100-120 FPS.
I agree with you though I really want to get myself an AMD GPU at some point, the 7900XTX does look really good especially with the performance, but here in SA Palit is simply giving better customer support with 3 years warranty vs 2 years as well as being significantly cheaper.
Though I would say that the efficiency is somewhat exaggerated, while being mostly true, but to a lesser degree.
Just as a point of comparison in many cases the 7900XT gave more FPS per watt vs the 4070Ti Super, now the 4080 generally still has the overall win with the 4070/4090 coming in first in some games which means the 4070Ti Super is seemingly the most inefficient in the 40 series making it actually comparable to some of the AMD cards depending in games.
On everything else I fully agree though.
    More in depth System specs:

Interesting. This is the first time that I have heard of DSR. I just quickly googled it but need to deep dive.
Regarding efficiency. Nvidia has the upper hand when you use DLSS and Frame Gen. I can see the difference in power consumption when I use AI enhancement vs playing in native 4k. Granted, if you play competative online FPS games you will not use ai which nullifies the efficiency advantages of Nvidia GPUs.
I considered Palit GPUs but was unsure whether their cooling is on par with other manufacturers. How are you finding it?
Do you think it's worth upgrading from 16GB RAM to 32GB for gaming?

@@HonestHans365 I've been using palit gpus for the better part of the last 10 years. They are ok, but I killed a 1080Ti and a 3080Ti, which I RMA'd with no issues, and our local retailer "Wootware" here in SA is honestly a 10/10 with their support.
I wouldn't say their coolers are anything special. Mine gets around 65c max, which is higher than most of the bigger brands, but memory temps are really good, though, and it's running pretty well overall.
It looks pretty good though, but no RGB, which is fine with me at the price I paid.
On the topic of DSR, it's a god send when replaying older games. The higher resolution generally works better than AA while performing pretty well, especially DLDSR.
On the features front, I played a few games with DLSS+FG and I'm slowly being converted into a believer, but I don't care much for RT tbh, I will take the highest resolution I can get as close to 120fps as I can, if I can I might even push for 140+ at something resembling 4k on my ultrawide screen even if I have to play with optimised settings.

Certainly not in everything. But at least a 4080 is needed to play some latest games on max in 4K, for example Helldivers 2 will not run 60FPS in 4K on Ultra settings even in high quality DLSS setting, not even on a 4080.

Yupp. Some games require a 4090 for maxxing out in 4k. As a gamer you have to ask yourself which games do you enjoy playing, how do you enjoy playing them and how much are you willing to spend.
For example, if I was mainly playing competative FPS titles I would be happy with a £600-800 as they are designed for a lowest common denominator.
My PC cost £1,600. Would spending three times that amount on a 4090 and 7800x3D rig make the games that I play more enjoyable? No.

When I can see the difference it's not signifigant enough to warrant the big frame rate drop. Alan Wake 2 and Cyberpunk look as good with Ray tracing as they do without. Games that look aweful without ray tracing looks aweful with it. Either way when I am in combat I am too focused on slaying than assessing reflection.
The same is true for me when comparing ultra setting with very high. You can dial down ultra a bit here and there, enjoy and increase in FPS with little loss in visual eye candy. Ultra setting can be pretty but more often than not it's for benchmarking rather than a must.

Watercoling with an AIO is not worth it. I had an 360 AIO and switched to an Noctua NH-U12A and the difference between my old Fractal Celcius 360 AIO and the new Noctua is negligible. My oced 5600x runs as cool with the Noctua as it did with the 360 AIO. Maybe 1 or 2 degree different but nothing to worry about. The system is a bit quieter now because my 3080 gets a bit more fresh air which keeps the fan rpm ~100-150rpm lower. You can hear the difference but can't feel it in everyday tasks.
On the Noctua cooler i use the offset mount which helps to get the most out of it. Thermalpaste is from Thermal Grizzly like before.

    • @HonestHans365
      @HonestHans365  Місяць тому

What’s the power consumption of your 3080 during gaming? Have you considered overclocking it?
Earlier this year I tried two AIOs: Fractal Celsius 360 and ID-COOLING DASHFLOW 280. I returned both. Both produced pump noise or the fans ran a bit louder than I expected. Meanwhile the AK620 is mechanically much simpler. You don’t need to worry about whether it’s the fans, radiator or pump that are faulty. However if your case can’t accommodate a big cooler than an aio might be neccessary.
I might upgrade to a Noctua NH D15 G2 or a Thermalright equivalent with 140mm fans. However my 5800x3d runs cool and doesn’t need overclocking.

I hope the 5xxx series will get the same coolersize but way better pricing :D
As long as you stick with the 5800X3D i think a better cooler is a waste of money.

Now I can use ray tracing and play above 60 versus 30-50. Without ray racing 90-120fps feels smoother than 70-90. For games that don't have ai upscaling the ti super is much stronger compared with the 4070 that can struggle pushing native 4k.

I got a good deal to sell the 4080 super so I didn’t hesitate cos it’s too much for my monitor, if I had to 120fps 4k monitor,, wouldn’t have sold it

@@willy7968 That's the benefit of Nvidia GPU. They have strong resale value. I have never played above 120fps. My PC is used with the LG C1 which is capped at 120fps. Because I don't play competative fps games any longer, I'm unlikely to buy a PC monitor anytime soon.
