Very Nice video... John and Margaret McCoy are my 3rd great grand parents. John Buttermilk and Nancy are my 2nd great grandparents... I can tell you all of the info that you would like to know about the old cabin location if you'd like. I built the stone for John Buttermilk about 15 years ago, have only been back a very few times since then.. The property was a larger boundary back in those days. It was given to Old William McCoy by the government for his service in the Revolutionary War. It was then given to John McCoy (son)... John and Margaret McCoy left Brushy in the 1830s and lived around Hatfield Tunnel in WV until the beginning of the Civil War. Their son John Buttermilk moved back to brushy in the 1850s and built the log house and lived there. He sent for his parents John and Margaret when the civil war broke out. They lived there until their death. The old house and property was later given to buttermilk's son William Trigg McCoy... It exchanged hands afew times in the 20th century.... Feel free to msg me if you have any questions about the place and people. Thanks
Do you have any info on John buttermilk son George. George was my husband's great great grandfather. His name was George Washington Mccoy married to Elliza Jane. His daddy was born in pike County. We don't know much we have never had a family Bible. My father in laws mother pass away when he was a boy or young teenager. The woman are the ones that seem to pass down this kind of information. Thank you
On the tombstone of John Buttermilk McCoy's listed children is Harrison F. McCoy who is my great Grandfather. I would love to know where he is buried. and more about him. My grandmother died when mom was a toddler. Grandfather remarried and i did not know any of the McCoy family. Do you know anything about him or his kin?
@@nancystevens7447 I don't believe that they had school there, But with it being in such a rural area, they may have at one point in time.. It was lived in my many different families up until the 1960s. Including church services. The house and property was up for sale in the late 90s and was sold not long afterwards. The owner has intentions of fixing it, but I'm not sure if there will be any progress in the future or not...

I too am a McCoy descendant. In 1991 my aunt published a McCoy family history book and i am recognising some of these names! Thank you for showing us some of our history! Love it!
Circuit riders were preachers who rode miles and miles to different churches on their circuit route, because many communities didn’t have preachers, so these men rode to one church one Sunday and another the next Sunday, and so on. I had 3rd, 4th and 5th great grandfathers who did this here in Kentucky, and they were Methodist preachers, so it must have been common for the Methodist organization. Happy Birthday Heather!
I can remember 8 of those old hued log houses within 1 hours walk from my house. Only one remains today. That is some beautiful country, and I enjoyed the cemetery visit and the stories. Thanks for the great video! HAPPY BIRTHDAY HEATHER!! May you celebrate many, many more!
I wish they would restore the cabin, I'm sure many people would be interested in visiting this beautiful site!! Thank you so much for this, I really did enjoy this!!
Couple of things on this video. First, again, I would like to tell Miss Heather Happy Birthday. May God bless you with many more. Secondly, it is ashamed that the old cabin couldn't have been found 30 - 40 years ago and be restored and preserved. That way, it would've stood another 100 years. Timbers that built that cabin had to be 18 to 24 inches or more wide, cut down, hand hewn, hand cut joints, amazing huge trees. The add on, probably a kitchen was added much later, you could see that they were cut on a saw mill. Would've been a great old cabin. Lastly, thank y'all for going all those extra miles to bring us these stories. Leo, do me a favor being you're there and I'm here, give Heather a big Texas birthday hug, and I'll let you give her a big birthday kiss. God bless y'all for all that y'all do. Stay safe out there on your travels.
Happy Birthday Heather. Leo a circut rider was a traveling preacher. He had a circuit...or a certain area that he visited on certain Sundays of every month.
People do not pay attention while they're putting in on Ancestry or Heritage or family history they just put in whatever they think is right and they're not following the documentation
Happy birthday Heather. I was guessing that y'all was headed to the Great salt cave up near munfordville Kentucky doing the story on one of my relatives Floyd Collins.
A beautiful amazing place. As the saying goes you always get you man. Such a shame the cabin was not preserved before it got to the point of no return. The size of those old growth logs is amazing. Nothing like that todayj.
Happy birthday to Heather! We enjoy all your videos! Keep 'em coming! A "Brushy Creek"was mentioned in the Coal Miner's Daughter. Love the old cabin, and it is too bad it can't be preserved!
Hi Guys...This video only confirms the reason I enjoy watching your videos...Heather it's nice to see you are back..The research that the both of you do and the detail is the reason I follow Hillbillyfiles..Please keep up the great work...D & C from Northeast Pa
Leo, If you use a mirror about a 12" square you can see the stones better. You angle the mirror to the sun and it will reflect on the stone. Really helps alot.. I've seen it done on UA-cam but have never done it myself.
Happy Birthday🎉 Ms. Heather!!! TY for all you do!!! Leo Your like a lil goat, climbing all those mountains. Idk but couldn't you use a drone when your not sure to guide you to keep from climbing for nothing. Or does the trees and brush get in the way. TY both I enjoy your channel so much. Makes you wonder about where we live and the towns and people that were here before us. I know you keep documents from your travels. You should write a book. With love from the Coalfields of VA.
Happy B-day, Heather, and thank you for looking for my ancestors' cabin and cemetery. I've been up Brushy Creek in the days before Google Earth, and I didn't even know if it had more than one way in and out then. My Maynard ancestors also lived on Brushy Creek near the Apple Orchard Old Regular Baptist Church and Cemetery in the early 1800s. Christopher Columbus Maynard supposedly built his first house there under a rock ledge on the opposite side of the road from the church.
Happy Birthday Heather! My Grandmother Roxie Elsie Robinette said in her memory notebook that she grew up at the head of one of the Forks of Brushy. Her father's name was Samuel. Thank you both for taking us on your trips.

So we can pause and read if need be so enjoyable different than others. Beautiful place and it’s like going back in time and history to go with it ty so much. Been there many times since. These last 2 videos remind me of that 1st trip so many years ago.

Happy Birthday Heather!!!!! LOVE this story and the scenery.....Spring is just about here!!!!! The back porch of the cabin reminds me of the back porch of Boo Radley from To Kill A Mocking Bird, no offense intended.
I would love to sell my house in Michigan and move down to pikesville after all that's where my family is from besides Harlan county Kentucky I could do so much with so little to that thank you guys for showing as well as being so respectful God bless
Hope your birthday was awesome. If anyone deserves a perfect day, it's you Heather. And you don't look a day older. This is my favorite Cemetery visit yet. A beautiful story and a beautiful, final resting place. Another excellent job as usual.
Beautiful scenery and music and it is easy to listen to you talk and you are very kind and respectful. That was a steep climb and very old stones. Seeing the research you did and the old tree and old church and old cabin/church where they died together, all just very picturesque.
First of all, a great big Happy Birthday to Heather! 💝 Thank you two for taking us to this beautiful part of the world!! I really liked the opening of this video, as well as the beautiful scenery, and I am happy you found the cemetery and the grave you were looking for.
