    Saying the Tyrell P34 is a failure is just plain criminal.

      @@CARROYALTY Tyrell abandoned the P34 because the new regulations for 1977 added more weight and width to their design, turning a great concept into a failure. Additionally, Goodyear never invested much in research and development for the front tires, and they refused to make more of these specialized tires after the 1977 season. It's fair to say the 1977 Tyrell was bad, but to consider it part of the "all-time worst list," especially because a very similar design was quite successful in 1976, seems a bit harsh, don't you think?

    The P34 is FAR above the rest of these gremlins. It had A LOT of success-14 podiums, a pole, and a race win? That's absolutely nothing to scoff at, especially in the time period it was in.

    Tyrell hit 3rd in constructors championship with the 'failure' P34, Jody also hit third in drivers in 1976 . So get your papers right. Certainly not the "worst" car at all.

    Not sure it wuite fits on the list as one of the slowest or worst cars.

      yeah that P34 was a rocketship on the straights, which is how it won. 14 podiums is VERY consistent, especially for the time period.

    • @AlbaHart

      @@CARROYALTY You should have been more specific. The P34 was a great car by F1 standards. Bad cars don't win races on merit, and this car did.
      Its 1977 replacement, the P34B was a dog though. It managed a couple of podiums, but ultimately the team had 19 retirements compared to 15 race finishes. It was overweight, slow, and unreliable. This would have made a nice distinction in your video, comparing the highs of such an innovative design one year to the failure of that concept the next year.

  • @samhill618
    @samhill618 3 місяці тому +3

    The P34 was competitive in the beginning despite having an engine (the Cosworth V8) that was wholly uncompetitive in the turbo era, since Tyrrell didn’t have access to a turbo, they had to be more innovative to attempt competitiveness. The main problem was Goodyear had no interest in continuing development of these small tyres for just one team so they lost their edge and eventually F1 started banning innovation generally and this was one of the early examples of that trend

    • @peterdaviesracing
      @peterdaviesracing 3 місяці тому

      But... the turbo era didn't start until 1977 when Renault entered, and their famous "yellow teapot" was laughed at until like 1979 where they started to get competitive on a consistent basis and other teams/manufacturers joined them? You might've slightly confused me there😅

    The P34 was far from a failure, it was a race winner in F1 in a time where competion was fierce. The reason it wasn't more successful was that Goodyear stopped developing the special tyre's (Rumoured to be due to preasure from Ferrari). You included some very bd racecars but to include the P34 discredits you're entire video

    The P34 won a race, so it's far from being a failure... specially when you put on the same level as Life F1 and Andrea Moda, also the latter only qualified for the race on Monaco, but it didn't finished "several laps behind the winner" it just retired after a few laps

    Man this is just a list of bad F1 cars. There are so many bad cars you can pick from other leagues - I'll name some off the top of my head
    Lancia Delta S4 - It killed a whole series.
    Mercedes-Benz CLR - you know, the one that flew.
    Ferrari 312P - this car was so bad Ferrari wouldn't even show their faces at Le Mans for generations after - literally
    Buick LeSabre - Buick went from dominating NASCAR to bottom feeders with this car. It was so bad they reverted to the old Buick Regal (and still did better)
    Eagle Aircraft Flyer - Who needs ground effects when you have air effects! This was an attempt to make an airplane into a racecar effectively - yes, it was as dumb as it sounds.
    Eco Radical LMP1 - On the bright side, group racing did help to mask that this car was only on pace with GTE cars
    Chrysler Patriot LMP - This car was ahead of its time. Too far ahead, unfortunately. It was so unreliable it never raced, but it was towed!
    Jaguar XKR G3 - with all the classes and independent circuits how do you not even manage a podium in Petit Le Mans?
    Nissan Deltawing - credit for trying something new and unique, I guess?
    Nissan GT-R LM Nismo - same as above, but less unique and even worse performance.
    Mazda RX-792P - did you even know there was another rotary powered sportscar by Mazda after the 787B? Of course you didn't, and there's a reason

    • @peterdaviesracing
      @peterdaviesracing 3 місяці тому

      If you mention the Delta S4... why not any late Can-Am cars by McLaren or Porsche? Just because a fatal crash caused the end of a regulation and not raising costs?
      The Deltawing wasn't that bad, it worked. It sadly met an impatient Nakajima and got wrecked into a wall. Too bad Nissan didn't continue with the concept themselves, it performed better than the Nismo(for whose failure Torotrak should partially be blamed as they should've made the drivetrain design choice work instead of a very fast FWD car).
      I'd go so far to replace the Mazda with the Aston Martin AMR-One. While the Mazda was meh and suffering from being barely funded by Mazda(Japan), the AMR-One was a terrible car that never went anywhere but should've performed way better as a works car. AMR went back to using the 09/60(Lola chassis) mid-season because it was faster and more reliable.
      It's funny and ironic that the chassis of the AMR-One was used for the DW, but it worked a lot better.

    Honda RA302 raced only once and driven by Jo Schlesser, a mediocre F2 driver, on the wet track it just crashed sideways. Those days sideways crash was usually fatal because the side fuel tanks just exploded (it happened to every F1 car those days). So, the tragedy had nothing to do with air cooled engine or the magnesium monococue.
