Especially when you consider how many of them went on to be huge inspirations themselves, and for such an uncountable number of musicians in a vast array of often incredibly different genres. I think a huge part of Franks genius, was his amazing ear, unhindered by popular culture and beliefs. Thank you Frank, the mark you left is manyfold.

My favorite Zappa solo of all time. This whole version is utter perfection… You can hear every single note from every single instrument, every tone has its own little space. He built a complex framework and decorated it beautifully
This solo is literally perfection from chaos.. every note is so magical and fits so good with the chord changes in the back.. its like a character going through different points in their journey.. you can visualise the solo.. there are beginning excitement, mellow anxiety, suspense, upliftment, and finally such a sweet release eventually.. 3 mins of pure delicacy
Also this is a really really good mix, especially considering it was done live in 1974. Huge respect to the sound engineers involved for the live recording as well for mixing.
Ruth is not only talented, she is fast. Transferring between the marimba and drums including muting. Also impressive stamina, she has a very physical job.
This is only one song they had to learn lol, they had a lot of songs to learn, and they had to be familiar enough to play them in different styles, tempos, and improvise over them
Ruth Underwood a master percussionist of talents rarely seen on a stage. Obviously Zappa had a special talent on recruiting musicians for his projects. What line up!! That is the best of the best.God bless Zappa and his guys.I'm really grateful to them all
The more I listen, watch, learn, and open myself to this level of art and craftsmanship, the more sure I am that this is music done right. Most music compared to Zappa is completely predictable, even the really good stuff. But he manages to follow a structure while still surprising the listeners. Music is meant to take your soul places, and his music takes me somewhere I’ve never been in this life. Same with that claymation, it’s like acid, it just makes sense to a part of my mind I don’t even know. To me, Zappa should be held as a standard in the art and music world. Frank Zappa was not very popular in the US at first. Obviously, Europe, which is the most experimental region in the world, welcomed him with open arms. But over the years, America began to realize who it had in its ranks, and he was established as the king of experimentation in the US. A huge number of albums and projects, humour and talent to spare.
Love seeing George Duke in his prime, working his craft like it’s the easiest thing in the world. This is my favorite incarnation of Zappa’s band and everyone on stage here is amazing!
You think this was George Duke in his prime? His Live in Tokyo concert in 1983 - on here - takes some beating. Those tracks are ear worms I don't want to let go of.
Never got to see Frank. I've seen Dweezil a few times and I see where he's so much like his dad. Not staying the spotlight but letting everyone else shine their light. Band is so tight.

I keep coming back to this one. I bought One Size as a high school kid when it first came out, and was so enthralled with the talent. Today would've been Frank's 83rd birthday. I bet he'd have lots to say.
Yes, I love Chester's sound here. Elegant, precise, leaves a lot of room. I like his groove, it's soulful. I was disappointed when he was replaced in Weather Report by Alex Acuna.
any musician worthy of their talent would give their eye teeth to play in a band like this, there is no set progression you go with the flow you need to know your stuff talk about challenging but absolutely rewarding to anyone lucky enough to get in on this
I always forget that my guy was a pretty decent vocalist. Had that Lonnnie Liston Expansions vibe to his vocal. Far too few people have that tone now. Opting instead for vocal pryotchnics.
I saw this band (on tour) four months before this was filmed. It was a mind blowing experience; I still remember (vividly) parts of the concert 48 years later. So glad to have this documentation.

I meet Frank Zappa and all the Mothers of Invention back in 1973 at Kent State Auditorium. Frank Zappa was generous enough to play the entire concert for 2 hours with the whole light show for four lucky students . I was one of those lucky students. I was standing close enough to the stage that I could see Frank's Zappa guitar strings vibrating. One Saturday afternoon while they were rehearsing for the concert later that night at 9:00 . I will never forget that Saturday afternoon. This song is from the book...The Chariots of the Gods. The story of flying saucers and UFOs, landing at the Andies mountain range. Oh, by the way, Frank and the Mothers never played this concert that night. Frank Zappa got sick of the unappreciative audience response and just left at 2 clock in the morning. How 😎 is that!

The clay animation and Frank's guitar solo (02:07) melting into one is pure wizardry. I am lost for words.
Bruce Bickford is a genius. Theres a reason Frank was so enamoured with his work that he produced multiple fillms of Bickfords work
Truly one of FZ's greatest compositions. Not only is his solo jaw dropping but the band are scorching hot too. All that knotty odd time, crazy harmony and difficult vocals just shows how great these guys were. George just absolutely burns on this song. RIP.
like all zappa comps. master in all ways with his music.
I like the recorded solo better tbh but this one was nothing short of great!
Reckon they used a click onstage? 🙄
No, children. They just PLAYED that shit.
Zappa was filth
Absolutely accurate.
How the hell they every memorized the whole thing is the true question.
Englehard Dinglefester rehersal 🙄
This is only one song they had to learn lol, they had a lot of songs to learn, and they had to be familiar enough to play them in different styles, tempos, and improvise over them
Repetition. hours of practice.
Hours and hours and hours pf practice!
Constant 5 hour day rehearsing. getting good on your chosen instrument!
To those that hear it, cheers! And to those that don’t, I hope someday you get the pleasure.
Well said 👏
Happened for me, hearing Montana 30 years after first dismissing it and being pulled in, still bewildered but this time unafraid
Everyone on point - good luck finding a band like this ever again
ua-cam.com/users/MelbSkaOrchestra They don't apparently have a composer, as ye,t like Zappa (once in a century, maybe) but they are really tight. Almost as tight as the now disbanded Orange County Supertones. E.g., ua-cam.com/video/WEjDHime_d0/v-deo.html
GENESIS
Dweezil may not be as great as his dad, but he definitely does the music justice.
Mr bungle mike patton
And
Devin townsend
You will find many more if u search deep enough
@@nakymawlot Bungle are great but only have 3 albums, and Devin is not in the same league than Zappa, he is great i love Addicted, and City from Straping Young Lad, but is not the same. I think that if Mr Bungle have 10 or 20 albums could be near to the Zappa legacy but is not the case... Thank You Scientist are amazing too and have a big Zappa influence.
Every single musician in this band is on level ultra insane. And FZ was the freakin mastermind of them all.
The thing about Frank and the early Mothers, is back in the mid-sixties they gave us (teenagers) a whole different way of looking at the world. Today, some 50 yrs later, I say thank you.
yes but it makes you enigma to other people, especially authority freaks
Ain't this the truth. Zappa and Kurt Vonnegut both contributed to the perversion of my normalcy.....
Once again, RUTH UNDERWOOD!!!
En Ruth, love the vibes!
Musical mastery composed by the maestro himself and played to perfection by these talented musos.
Wow, I'm speechless... I just can say... Incredible. I'm 21 years and I've never listened to something like this before. Psychedelic rock, Jazz and a lot of another musical genres, all in one!!!
Another 21 year old here having the exact same experience here.
Your age is irrelevant, just enjoy the music.
it's a little bit relevant considering the music most people in our age listen to.
@@davidreinhard6037 I don't believe it is. Just because you don't listen to the typical genres of your age group doesn't get you a round of applause. Everyone tries so hard to be unique and in turn all end up looking the same
It is refreshing to hear of young musicians picking up on Frank's music - it proves that great music is timeless. Arturo, David - welcome to the fold!
This track is so intellectually stimulating and relaxing at the same time. Love it. Everyone on this band is just brilliant. On this track Ruth Underwood is absolute star
The space between the notes, the story Frank tells with his guitar, the perfect band that supports it... this is musical heaven
Love seeing George Duke in his prime, working his craft like it’s the easiest thing in the world.
This is my favorite incarnation of Zappa’s band and everyone on stage here is amazing!
Agree. I've heard all eras of Frank's music, this period is the best, imho.
You think this was George Duke in his prime? His Live in Tokyo concert in 1983 - on here - takes some beating. Those tracks are ear worms I don't want to let go of.
@@andrewhinds6560 I do think that, but his later stuff is excellent too. Just a great artist all around.
Never got to see Frank. I've seen Dweezil a few times and I see where he's so much like his dad. Not staying the spotlight but letting everyone else shine their light. Band is so tight.
8:51 - Ruth Underwood is a superhero.
That run of hers at 9:32 is AMAZING!
Sensory overload. What with a band which must be one of the best ever assembled and the trippy plasticine art. Wow.
Frank's still playing all the guitar, and maybe his greatest band ever. Awesome so glad this was filmed
Without a doubt, the most fantastic musical ensemble I have ever heard, To me, "Inca Roads" is quite possibly Frank Zappa's greatest musical creation. Expands my mind, and lifts my spirits every single time I listen to it. Thank you, Frank, and R.I.P. ........
The finest composer of the twentieth century leads his finest band in possibly their greatest tour de force. Stunning.
The complexity of this song is astounding...and to think they all fucking nailed it...all...Such a great band and great composer ...hundreds of years ahead of its time.
Zappa saw music in a completely different realm...
One of the best progressive rock song of all times, one of the best guitar solos in musical history
I keep coming back to this one. I bought One Size as a high school kid when it first came out, and was so enthralled with the talent. Today would've been Frank's 83rd birthday. I bet he'd have lots to say.
George Duke, Ruth Underwood, and Napoleon Murphy Brock steal the show
One of the best drums sounds I’ve ever heard on a live recording. Amazing
Yes, I love Chester's sound here. Elegant, precise, leaves a lot of room. I like his groove, it's soulful. I was disappointed when he was replaced in Weather Report by Alex Acuna.
This is not only absolutely insanely good, it's also stunningly beautiful. Napoleon and George are incredible singers. Love this to bits and pieces.
I think people are still not ready for this...this is so ahead of its time. Such geniality condensed in a 10 min video.
any musician worthy of their talent would give their eye teeth to play in a band like this, there is no set progression you go with the flow you need to know your stuff talk about challenging but absolutely rewarding to anyone lucky enough to get in on this
I can't get over George Duke's vocals at the beginning of this song . My God!
I always forget that my guy was a pretty decent vocalist. Had that Lonnnie Liston Expansions vibe to his vocal. Far too few people have that tone now. Opting instead for vocal pryotchnics.
Loved Zappa since my early 20's.....but now in my early 50's i appreciate it so much more, man, what a legend he was!!!!
Personnel[edit]
Frank Zappa - guitar, backing vocals
George Duke - lead vocals, keyboards, synthesizer
Napoleon Murphy Brock - flute, tenor saxophone, backing vocals
Tom Fowler - bass
Chester Thompson - drums
Ruth Underwood - vibes, marimba, percussion
I saw this band (on tour) four months before this was filmed. It was a mind blowing experience; I still remember (vividly) parts of the concert 48 years later. So glad to have this documentation.
I'm sure every musician would be in heaven on stage with a band like this!!
Their faces tell it all, they know they are making something very special and loving it all the way...
Music I grew up to, man was I lucky. 🙏
This song is an absolute masterpiece and one of the best jams I've ever heard in my life so far.
This is the best recording of this song and I will die on that hill.
Absolutely
It is the "studio recording" without the Helsinki solo which is pretty tasty too...
The definition of eargasm.
Good God, the hours of individual practice and rehearsal that went in....absolutely masterful....
Wow, a friend referred me, am 71 years old, never heard a band so tight , polished and brilliant as you, I am so impressed and grateful to get to listen to you, thank you, be blessed:)))
His best band and an amazing composition as usual. Imagine being in a wheelchair for a year--and producing the entire Lather triple album--and a year later you're doing this.
Nothing compares to you F.Z. you're the best. R.I.P.
Frank was loving george's keyboard solo. Big ol smiles
A masterclass of musical talent, arrangement, and for sure , animation.
I have just met Napoleon Murphy Brock, in Hamburg. Such a warmhearted, wonderful, talented, cool Dude. Thanks, Napy, for still being around and keeping the good vibes and wonderful music up.
All of them, masters. I'm so glad I was around to catch some live shows.
Very envious (in a good way)
One of the truly GREAT guitar solos by Frank. Personal favourite of mine. Blues soulful feel to it. Noodling at its very best. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This NEVER gets old.
This has evolved further and further up my list of favorite zappa songs. These days its just my favorite SONG.
2:04 always gives me chills. What a total break from a whirlwind clashing styles of music. God. I cant wait to see Dweezil after covid is done.
Yes,and yes
Rays of sun breaking through the clouds after a storm
Incredible music and musicians...RIP Tom Fowler!
This is probably the best song I have ever heard, played on one of the best shows ever played in the history of music!!! When someone asks me what's my favourite musical style, I answer: Frank Zappa!!! They are all there mixed together in such a perfect way... Zappa's way.
Jazz-fusion. Basically Jazz music fused with cartoon like imagery...and I mean imagery in a musical way.
Best album ever! I still feel my ears sliding immediately into . . . "She lives in Mojave in a Winnebago" at the end of this . . . . what phenomenal album! What a GENIUS! Whenever I hum these songs in my head I start laughing (booger bear) :: )
This is my favourite song in the world too, and it makes me cry it’s so good.
In my mind, this is one of the best songs Zappa made. But there was so many. This one just hit my limbic system every time.I just miss the original guitar solo.So lyrical.
This IS the original guitar solo. Zappa replaced it with the solo from Helsinki concert for the album.
When you practice your instrument 8 hours per day, every day for a few years, you might be able to play one or two bars of this
Virtuosos are in a league of their own.
@@jstoli996c4s it’s not only how often you play. It’s what you play. The virtuoso relentlessly gives incredibly difficult things to learn. Often their creativity lets them have an infinite pool of these challenges. Seldom do they ever default to something they don’t need to think about, unless that is the goal they’re going for at that moment.

HAHAHAHAH lol
This guy IS what I call a crazy diamond.
Never miss Dweezil when he comes to Seattle.
Shine on
Excadrill 57 :-)) yes exactly!
Zappa is one of the sanest people to have ever lived.
Chew.
One of the most sublime compositions ever! Have been listening to it for 40 years, and it hasn't lost any of its beauty!

One of the best live recordings of any Zappa band
Just mesmerised with all of it.
Has to be one of the best guitar solos of all time.
This was my go to VHS when all my friends were tripping in my living room at 2am. Trust me, it'll melt your brain!!
I like your style
The consummate host.....
Zappa was garbage
Speed king! ❤
@@marlon-jl4gewhat do you know about music dude?
Now I am 60. I was 14 when this track was performed. I only know today how creative and timeless this exception guitar player was. How did he find the rest of this wonderful band. A great pleasure for all listeners even after all these years. Thanks to this Frank of being our Zappa!
And three of the recorded guitar solos from other performances of Inca Roads were the basis of the "Shut Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar" pieces on the albums of that name. Different all and awesome all, set to new percussion and accompaniment by Zappa. If anyone is interested, look up "xenochrony".
Found Zappa in the late 2000s at College. Zappa is the Zenith
@Jeff Sylvester "I hear Linda Ronstadt is looking for a guitarist"
I meet Frank Zappa and all the Mothers of Invention back in 1973 at Kent State Auditorium.
Frank Zappa was generous enough to play the entire concert for 2 hours with the whole light show for four lucky students .
I was one of those lucky students.
I was standing close enough to the stage that I could see Frank's Zappa guitar strings vibrating.
One Saturday afternoon while they were rehearsing for the concert later that night at 9:00 . I will never forget that Saturday afternoon.
This song is from
the book...The Chariots of the Gods. The story of flying saucers and UFOs, landing at the Andies mountain range.
Oh, by the way, Frank and the Mothers never played this concert that night.
Frank Zappa got sick of the unappreciative audience response and just left at 2 clock in the morning.
How 😎 is that!
Words are unable to describe how beautiful the music of FZ is. Just listen. 🥰
Zappa’s arrangements were complex , so well thought out and just absolute genius
I have never heard anything like this. The virtuosity , the radical tempos and the insane video made with clay figures. Its so off the charts its breathtaking. The musicians are out of this world good. Amazing.
Love this very much, Ruth Underwood is the Winner. My Favorit singing Franks Guitar is: BJÖRK!
dieser Song und auch dieses Video hat mich damals im Alter von 10 Jahren so unfassbar "zappafiziert"
Mich auch.... Ich war allerdings 14 Jahre alt 😅
I came across this ten years ago. It never ceases to amaze me, the guitar solo in particular is a work of art. Have a good day reader.
What a trip, absolutely amazing, I take my hat off to Frank Zappa and his fantastic musicians, was allowed to see him live three times Thank you very much for that, what a great legend.
He was a shit boring asshole and his music too
I... cannot comprehend how good this is.
Pardon me while I wipe my brain off the floor, this was too much for me.
