- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Spacedock CGI VFX
Most shots have been redone for this final version. Enjoy :)
This animation aims to capture what might have been if the movie had not had to re-use footage from The Motion Picture for the launch scenes, instead having Enterprise launch from the same spacedock we see in The Search for Spock. Special care has been taken to try and match the new footage to how they may have filmed the actual models for these scenes circa 1982, so no flashy lens flairs or swanky camera movements like we see in modern Trek.

This will always be the best era for starship design. They certainly think so on Picard
The most beautiful ship in the whole of Federation. ❤❤
Great job and beautifully done! Thank you for everything!
Q's: Did you consider a more realistic approach to the hull lighting? Those spots that somehow show up on the inside backend of the nacelles, the very back lighting of the tail beneath the shuttle bay doors and the spot behind the officers lounge always have frustrated me given there is no apparent projecting source.
Also, should the deflector dish be orange-ish and not blue while in space dock?
Can't wait to see future projects!
Yes i've always thought the way the spots were a bit weird. But if I corrected them, it would lead to a discrepancy with what they look like in the movies, so here at least, i've kept them the same.
As far as the deflector goes, it's blue in III inside of spacedock, so again I am just marrying this footage to what they probably would have done at the time. Thanks for your comments :)
@@hardwire5000 Thank you for taking the time to answer and explainers!
0:20 Gods, what a beauty.
Love It! Great Job!
More beauty to enjoy! Lovely work!
Love your work, Chris. Very well done.
Beautiful work!
Beautiful!
she's a beautiful & elegant ship..always be my favourite anyways.
but everybody knows u leave space dock at full impulse 😊
1/4 impulse.
I wonder if it was intentional on your part to *not* show the full exterior of the Spacedock?
At the time, it would have felt like a huge tease; here's the Enterprise leaving what is obviously a huge space station and the filmmakers don't even show it in full... only to get an amazing reveal one movie later when the Enterprise comes back home and we get to see the whole thing in full 😲.
Great job by the way!
Back then, when models were so much more expensive, we were really lucky to get *three* whole new ships in addition to a giant space station in TSFS.
Yes it was intentional to not show the full dock exterior as clearly the revel shot in III would then have been pointless. Well spotted :)
Looks fantastic
Still...the best designed starship.
Fictionally and perhaps, non-fictionally, if humanity survives itself, to make it to the stars.
Beautiful. I guess the next challenge is creating a weathered, aged hull coloring for a CG model. 14 years passed between TMP and TWOK.
Awesome work man! Really lovely! :)
Very nice!
They left space dock at one quarter impulse. Yet, the impulse engines weren't lit up. Still it was a cool short vid.
I had them be a bit darker in the shot leading up to full impulse, else there would be no impact. Glad you enjoyed it though :)
I don't buy them leaving spacedock at impulse. If full impulse is 1/4c (a whole quarter of warp 1), then 1/4 impulse is still gonna be stupid-fast. So I think they're just using thrusters while in spacedock like they're supposed to - only following the order for impulse once they've cleared spacedock.
Well done! Could you do a Churchill animation if I provided you with the model?
Yes!!!!!
How is this a re-creation? It looks like the exact footage from the official movie.
One quarter impulse power inside the spacedock.....
