  • 🎬👋 Hi Trek Enthusiasts! It's Jim from TrekWorld, back with another deep dive into the incredible world of Star Trek! In today's video, we're exploring the transformative journey of the Star Trek original series, from its original 60s optical effects to the stunning remastered CGI versions. 📺🌟
🔍 In 2005, CBS made a groundbreaking decision to remaster the entire original series, elevating the visuals to 2K high-resolution glory. This meant new color balances, advanced image processing, and a complete overhaul of the old-fashioned optical effects with cutting-edge computer graphics. 🎨💻
🔎 But what about the originals? The classic Star Trek episodes, once available in 16mm colored film and viewed on early analog TVs, have slowly disappeared from streaming services. Fear not! We've got an elusive look at these rare versions, including the beloved 11-foot model shots and the non-CGI footage that defined an era. 📼🌌
🛸 Dive into the fascinating history of each shot - from the 'Riding to the Sunset' clip used across three seasons to the 'Breaking Orbit' perspective, which captivated audiences in the earliest episodes. We'll also unravel the mystery behind the unique 'reverse lettering' on the model's right-hand side - a topic of legend among early Trekkies. 🕵️‍♂️🚀
📚 Join us as we review the special effects shots, season by season, uncovering the changes and the stories behind each iconic scene. This is a journey through time, appreciating the evolution of one of the most iconic spaceships in TV history - the Starship Enterprise. 🌠🛰️
🎉 Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the Star Trek universe, this video is a must-watch for anyone interested in the behind-the-scenes magic that brought the Enterprise to life. So, grab your Blu-rays (or join us in the world of streaming), and let's embark on this stellar journey together! 🎞️🖖

Wait... _Star Trek was in color?!!??!?!_ I'm laughing, as while we did have a color set in the den, as a kid I watched most of the episodes on a tiny 11 inch or so black and white TV with my dad, often outside. When my late wife and I decided to rewatch all of Trek starting early this year (she unexpectedly passed away shortly in, during TOS) she would often rant happily, "these are so GOOD!" We watched the original edits, not the enhanced. I finally was able to watch the new SNW's episodes that we didn't watch together early this month. I miss both Sarah and my dad and Trek was part of how we connected. Watching your videos is bittersweet. Thank you for making them.

I'm such an original Trekky I still have my personal VHS tapes taken off of network along with the initial VHS tapes I bought of the complete series sitting in a box deteriorating, some still in their original shrink wrap. As far as the original presentation of the ship, we all knew that each approach of the ship was incredibly important to the story line..... seeing it coming in from the left moving fast was the "to the rescue" scene. Seeing her at rest or circling a planet in high stable orbit was telling us that the entire episode dealt entirely with a crew story. Seeing her in a 'beauty roll' to her belly was not done successfully until next Generation when cameras had improved. 'Riding into the sunset' was done in combination with specific music letting us know while she was leaving, the story continued. I looked forward to seeing the Enterprise coming at us regardless of the story simply because it was so unusual. I've seen multiple interviews with the film crew, designers and directors at several Star Trek conventions explaining how various shots were filmed (but sadly those interviews were not recorded for posterity.) I know of no other TV series whose photography was nearly as important as that of the Enterprise to each episode. Nor of any fans who actually care as much about the canons of the show. Good job with this.

@15:53, we can tell it's not the 3-footer, not just because of the obvious lights, but also because the bottom of the saucer is not flat, and instead you can see the tapered conical shape and rounded lower edges of the 11-foot model.

Remastering the effects was considered necessary when it became apparent that the live action footage, thanks to Jerry Finnerman’s wonderful cinematography, could translate to modern high-definition viewing; while the visual effects, however ingenious for the time, with their matte lines and huge amounts of film grain, were never intended to be viewed in such demanding formats.
I’m not here to bash the CGI effects, and in fact there are quite a few that at least conceptually I can still appreciate. That said, it’s obvious that the majority of them haven’t aged well. At this point - assuming that Paramount would be willing to go back to the well one more time - with modern AI-driven compositing and up-res software it may very well be possible to do a substantial cleanup of the original footage without much resorting to CGI models at all, which may be the best way to honor the intent of the original artists, who routinely struggled with antiquated technology, tight budgets and impossible deadlines to bring us the TOS that we know.

At 25.52 you can clearly see that the wood block is missing on the port side of the secondary hull. At 26.55 of this video if you look at the pylon on the starboard side you can kind of see a little bit of the piping used to light up the nacelles. It's brief and only see it at the bottom of the pylon. At 29:42 you can also see the piping on the port side of the neck. Although if you didn't know about the piping you may know notice it. This is a very extensive list of all the shots. I sure this took a lot of time and research to put this together. Very informative to say the least. I find it amazing that they never shot the 11' for the third season. I always thought the 3rd season had better effects and the ship shots seamed clearer in it. I guess it's just all the optics used like in The Tholian Web and the asteroid shots used in a couple episodes. Oh a video on the asteroid might be interesting if you can find out anything about that.

Thanks for all the work you put in. It great seeing these shots again . For there time, many these were amazing that they did this on a tv budget. I hate they changed the special effects back in 2005. The series is a piece of history of the 1960s. It needs to be intact.

Agreed. One of my biggest concerns as a Star Trek fan is how so many things that were unique to those of us who've been fans since the 60-70s ("Gen 1") are slowly being lost as time goes on. Let's face it, 20-30 years from now, the most active Star Trek fans will not be our generation - so they probably won't have an incentive to make sure things like the original footage are preserved somewhere.

Besides the lights, there's another way to tell the 134" model apart from the 33" one is that the Big E 's saucer has a conical understructure; the Little E 's understructure is a flattened dome. The bulge on the top of the saucer is similarly flattened on the Little E.

During the first run of Star Trek in the '60's, the "Next Week" trailer at the end of an episode did not use the Enterprise with a "Next Voyage" title card. What happened was that you'd see a scene from the next episode at the start of the clip with "NEXT WEEK" and a voice over of Kirk talking about the episode. The only time I've seen the other version with "Voyage" on it was when Star Trek was made available in home video. Where the original coming episode trailers are, I don't know.

@ 28:10, the metal prop Enterprise was about 4 inches long. You can see this in shots of Sylvia holding the model up by the chain and of the Lucite-encased one next to the communicator hero prop. The Lucite prop also was on display for a while at the Smithsonian 1992-93 Star Trek Exhibition hanging from the hand of a female manikin and it is fairly substantial.
Plus, having a number of the Star Fleet Battles 3 inch 1/3788 scale starships, I can attest to what that looks like, and the Catpaw props are far larger!

  • @mem1701movies

The one thing I hate about the new remastered versions is the scale of the enterprise. The cgi model is too small. The great thing about the 11 foot shooting model is it’s sheer size. It looks so good on film.
The remastered shots just look like crummy dated video game shots now. I’m sure they could make it better now.

You raise a good point, and I am pretty sure I've even seen evidence of this. Younger Star Trek fans have only seen the CGI versions, and to them it appears to have always been the case as there's no way that Star Trek TOS could have looked like that in the 1960s.

I’m wondering if there’s any effort (or hope in an effort) to finding some of those original background elements - planets, starfields, water tank footage, laser canon and phaser animations, glitter swirling in a glass, etc….. I mean they went thru a camera, so there had to be a negative in a can somewhere before it was printed then optically printed.

This is excellent work. Angles really are close to the original effects. The only "gripe" I''d say is that the Enterprise tended to get faster as it approached and would have a slower run as it flew past. Not really a gripe at all of course especially when you consider the level of work done. and it is WELL done.

The worst thing that ever happened was when they made all the special effects CGI instead of showing it the way it was produced. There was no need to upgrade anything other than the film quality. • @TREK-WORLD
      @TREK-WORLD  7 місяців тому +2

So this is a great question. The 1" Plexiglas circle was added as an access panel to the bow lights during the conversion into the Production version. It's dimmer than the other 3 because of the saucer's construction. A wooden box beam runs down the centerline of the saucer & supports it. The 2 bow lightbulbs aren't directly under the access panel because of the box beam, and the dim light from below pretty much balanced the studio lights, making the frosted Plex look almost the same as the saucer's hull. As a result, the original effects couldn't show up on standard definition tvs.

You can get the entire TOS series untouched on VHS. I grandpa had them and my cousins and I watched the hell out of them in the late 1980s and early 1990s. We watched a ton of TNG in the same manner as well.

State of the art? Not even then. And now A LOT of it looks like mediocre cartoon animation.

I can't stand the CGI I get better graphics in space engine or Kerbal Space Program. Seriously it looks like they were rendered on the Nintendo 64.
