Fun-fact about Willbreaker + Yasova: Yasova's ability will always trigger at the start of combat and you need to declare a target for it. This means that if Willbreaker is in play you'll get the creature before Yasova's ability resolves and don't have to pay for it! 😁 (In fact, Yasova's ability fizzles entirely since the target is no longer legal, meaning you can't pay to give it haste.)
My understanding is that you have to pay for Yasova's ability for it to target something. Am I missing something? It says, you may pay and IF you do. Otherwise nothing happens.
@@brucehayes3127 Well that's a blast from the past! In short, abilities that refer to a target MUST have a target declared to be put on the stack, if there aren't any legal targets it won't be put on the stack. The "if" part of the ability means that the rest of the ability happens if the aforementioned criteria are still met upon resolution of the ability.
My friends and I just did a round of random commander builds, budget addition. Each card is as close to $1 as possible, cap at $1.50 because of how prices fluctuate. This one is my commander!
@Victor Way We didn't exactly choose, like I said, it was random. We all went to EDHrec and pushed the random button, the ruling being you get 1 mulligan if you don't want your first commander (the same as Quest for the Janklord). Only 1 person in our group got a really miserable commander to play after their mulligan so we allowed him one more because we want everybody to have fun. No budget on commanders, you get what you get, but of course our sliver player got sliver hivelord.
Ikr this guy is single handedly raising the price... I payed 2 bucks for one and my mind was blown lol i had gotten them as barely a quarter cards a year ago lol. Crazy
Yeah! Please Mitch! Even though the prices do differ and fluctuate at times, it's still nice to have a reference point of the costs of each individual card.
@@manwithabasicprofilepic most people won't take that extra step. With the cheap prices displayed right underneath the card more people are likely to buy the cards since they can see they're cheap, which would then drive up the price. A good example almost entirely due to this youtube channel- Wayfarer's Bauble.
A great card to add would be Bazaar Trader. You'd use Yasova's ability, then use the trader to permanently give yourself control of the creature. it's also only $1.00 card
Hey, Mitch, love the content. I wanted to point something out real quick, though. Hazoret's Favor (6:12) will work with some of the other theft effects, but not Yasova specifically. This is because Hazoret's Favor has to target a creature you control, which whatever Yasova is targeting won't be until that ability resolves. Still a great inclusion, especially with the other Threaten effects in the deck
It's worth noting that you don't even have to pay 3 for yasova with willbreaker. Because it is optional, you don't pay the costs until the ability resolves. Simply targeting a creature with Yasova's ability will be enough to trigger Willbreaker. Also, unfortunately Hazoret's Favor doesn't work like how you want it to. Both the favor trigger and the Yasova trigger will be put on the stack at the same time, which will prevent you from targeting the opponent's creature (you have to target when it gets put on the stack, and Yasova's theft ability hasn't resolved yet).
I know this is an old video, but your channel is one of the best MTG channels out there. I only play Commander with friends for fun, but some of them spend a lot more than me, and it's nice to be able to compete.
Excellent decktech as always Mitch. As a longtime EDH player, Yasova was my first and longest-running Commander; Temur is my favourite Colour identity, and I always find myself coming back to Yasova. In my experience playing her, she's one of those commanders that can be really abusive if built too spicy (stealing commanders can have a visceral "punching-down" feeling if your pod isn't ready for it). The *single most important* thing about a Yasova deck is the ramp package, as you'll want to run Yasova in order to threaten creatures every single turn, which effectively puts you 3 mana behind everyone for the rest of the game. Efficient ramp cards like Bauble + Rampant Growth are obvious inclusions, but I find that higher volume ramp spells like Far Wanderings ($0.05), or Perilous Forays ($0.66) or even otherwise janky ramp like Hedron Archive ($0.34) can do decent work. I like Perilous Forays, as it's part of a 3-card non-infinite combo that's hard enough to pull off as to not feel so bad when you spring it on a table. Perilous Forays + Amulet of Vigor ($12, yikes) + Omnath, Locus of Rage ($7.00) lets you churn out all your basics, generating one 5/5 Elemental each time, that can then be sacrifices to Forays so Omnath can bolt something. With 14 basics, that's upwards of 42 damage (or if you have excess creatures, 70 power spread over 14 5/5 elementals) Janky, a bit heavy on the wallet, but all three of these cards fit into what a Yasova deck wants to do, so it's not hard to justify it (unless you want a more streamlined spicy combo).
Don’t make grandma grab her whooping stick. This deck creates so much salt in my group. Black blade reforged and shadow spear are just nuts in this deck for keeping you alive after everyone turns on you for taking there stuff and just sacrificing it.
Dreamshaper Shaman would be good in this deck. At the beginning of the end step pay 3 and sac your stolen creature to reveal till you hit a nonland perm. I use it in my Myela deck and sac zombies and saprolings. And you can use it as many times a turn you can afford to do it with.
Yes! I’ve always wanted to build this!! I clicked it as soon as I saw it. Also, who else thinks that Mitch’s tactic names just keep getting better! I could never come up with those funny names!
I have a Yasova Dragonclaw altered art to Hannibal Barca, the bane of Rome, and it's one of my favorite decks. I exile the opponents creatures and sacrifice them...in a way you could say that Yasova is kind of a reverse Zedruu the Great-hearted sort of.
This is my newest commander! I build decks solely with the cards that I own but I went the route of commander damage and enchantments as well as gaining control of opponents creatures of course.
With Yasova and Willbreaker you dont need to pay the 3. Paying the 3 is part of the resolution of the ability. Willbreaker triggers as soon as yasovas ability goes on the stack and targets an opponents creature.
Surprised Bazaar Trader wasn't in here; it's a tap effect to gain permanent control of a threatened creature. Choose yourself as the target player, and Bazaar Trader's effect will last forever, overriding threaten effects that only last until the end of turn. My Yasova tiny leaders deck loved that card.
Nice take! But I've missed Witche's Oven... 3 life may not seem that much, but it provides you ammo for the Makeshift Munitions AND may even fetch you a Mechanised Production victory - if you include it in the deck.
Same! I really like playing Temur, but after Xyris and Kalamax I wanted to try out something a little less spell slingy and more voltron. Yasova seems like a great choice as a commander to slap some buffs on and stomp face, but also the back up plan on "stealing all the good stuff" seems solid.
I know the video was made already but there is a super budget and almost broken land that synergizes well with her and I run it in mine. Endless sands from amonket cycle. I bet there are a few other budget utility lands that work well with her. That is just the one I remember using the most.
I've been running a budget Yasova deck for a long time and one of her unforeseen strengths are the social aspects. Make deals with other players to block-kill problem creatures you steal as well as players straight up holding their bombs for fear that they'll get stolen. This leads to them pleading for removal when they can't do it themselves. Really fun. I play it against stronger commanders but the power level fluctuates based on what the table is playing
I have also put some cards into the deck that swap control of permanents/creatures. With a switcheroo in Hand it does not matter how big my yasova is, because i can steal a small creature and exchange control.
Had a Yasova EDH deck, was really fun! But took it apart because it was sending too much feel bad vibes with by always being a looming threat of stealing stuff so they coulnd't play much from their hands ( drawing a lot of hate, damage and removal towards your side). And also was too much commander centered leading to inconsistency. When Yasova stuck to the board you were great when not you would usually be out of the race. I don't know if it's out of the budget but Bazaar Trader would be my golden pig in the deck! Because you can steal something with Yasova (or other cards), tap Bazaar Trader and give yourself control of what you stole. That will overwrite any "gain control until the end of turn" clause into a permanent gain control! One thing to note is with Hazoret's Favor, you can't do it with creatures you are gonna steal with Yasova, since when you have to declare your target you still don't control the creature you will steal this combat phase. Great deck tech! Had some equipments I didn't think about but should had used when I still had the deck. Keep up the great work!
Excellent EDH deck idea. Real board control I think. What about adding FLING, Traitorous Blood, Act of Treason, Bloodshot Cyclops and Temporary insanity for instant speed.
