Similar experience here as another former yugioh locals player. With some of the hard lock boards we have to deal with, I guess we can risk getting jaded to what would break a social contract for EDH
It was especially bad during the time when Vanity’s Emptiness was legal in Yugioh. It actually felt like, opponent won coin flip. Opponent made an oppressive board. Opponent flipped Vanity’s. GG

I play xanathar but I don’t have any wincons myself and since I almost never become archenemy, I use other people’s decks to find answers to help all of us and my playgroup doesn’t seem to mind when it goes like that.
I build an muldrotha/umbris deck where I mill-exile or direct exile all opponents decks, those combo pieces and extra turn spells. I love it but I awlways also feel bad when i play it! xD

Either Commanders for jerks or Commanders for those who are ignorant. The first deck I put together was a Sen Triplet deck...I had no clue she was considered salty.
I built a Satsuki deck that’s designed to cast enchantments and sagas like rapid fire, with draw card advantage and massive token generation. It also doesn’t help that I’m running Brilliant Restoration, Resurgent Belief, and Triumphant Reckoning to bring back those Enchantments they keep board wiping off.
Since everyone know exactly what kind of deck Tergrid is, it as a huge target on its back. For this reason, I usually have a secret commander/lieutnant in most of my deck. For exemple, you could build a tiny bones deck including all the mass draw/discard you can find and a few tutor to go and fetch Tergrid.
I don't see a problem with any commander. I love to play commander and if I played the same vanilla decks on repeat I would go nuts. You built a spicey deck? Hell to the yeah, watch me cream it or die trying. And if this deck can not beat it? I bet this one can.....
I have vorinclex and tergrid in the 99 of a deck as big threats/wincons to reanimate. Much less salt that way, as they are more tools than salt mines. Honestly they should bring back banned as commander and get some of the ones that are fine as the 99 but not as the commander
Play EDH long enough and you're bound to encounter one of the commanders featured in this vid...and it's at that time that a portion of the players at the table "suddenly" remember they have to run an important errand or that they accidentally forgot that they left their stove on at home...lol
I dont have a problem with any commander. You wanna tell me these manders are far too cheesy when its turn 4 and you have 7 mana production and 6 creatures out? I exaggerate but thousands and I mean thousands of things in magic are cheesy and not even fun to win with. People can play whatever they want
I play in a group that has a tergrid deck and I think it’s fun to play against. They have to work for it, tergrid dies to removal constantly, but if they fight through it and start going off, then it’s fun having the table fight to discard or sacrifice instants, sorceries and land cards to try and deny them any real power while we bide our time. I don’t think it should be banned at all, that would be a shame. And we would still let them play it anyways. There are a lot of sensitive players out there I suppose.
I really don't get all the hate about specific playstyles in EDH at all. Commander is about having fun and expressing yourself so if you want to play stax because it's a completely fine and fair way to play Magic. You should be allowed to. My largest gripe with EDH is how often people get targeted for playing stax because I firmly believe it's not only overhated, but healthy for the format and fun. Having a unique set of restrictions to work around makes the game more fun. Don't even get me started on the "no removal" rules people make.
"Commander is about having fun and expressing yourself" you say that but then don't see why people don't want to play against decks that make them not able to play their decks? There is no rule saying you're not allowed to but Commander is a social format so even though no one is stopping you playing these decks eventually no one is going to want to play against you or just scoop early, no one is having fun against a stack deck especially people who are just playing casual decks.
And of course you are going to get targeted if you play stax because you are the largest threat at the table and people can't play there decks until you are removed from the game, you can't play these types of decks and then complain when people hate you out the game every time like what did you expect?
If you want an unpleasant to play against experience, Proteus Staff Talrand can dig for Jin-Gitaxias. Have fun realizing that if you've got no creatures left in your deck, you can just re-order your deck with Proteus Staff, and Jin draws 7. I think we can all figure it out from 7 card tutor...
@@murphyspell7125 I have a really cool proxy of him from mtgblackcore. Though I don't even have the vampire deck anymore, there's no point if you already know you're gonna be focused down. For good reason too ofc 😂
A game of "who's degenerate deck is worse" is often a great use for these commanders. It tends to be more on the funny end of gameplay, vs fun and engaging, but it's a great way to end a night, or just for giggles.
I use Gaddock Teeg as a meta choice card in my deck. There is so much extra turn decks where I play Gaddock Teeg it helps shut them down hard. If I don't have it in play by turn 3 I usually wait 20-30 min before taking a 4th turn while 2 other people take 2-3 turns each. I remember someone complained about how me having Gaddock Teeg made their hand unplayable. Near the end of the game I saw their hand and they had 4 extra turn spells they could never cast. I don't care if I am a jerk for playing it if your strategy is to take 5 turns to my 1.
Maybe it says something about my last experience playing that I want to build a Tergrid deck with butcher of makakir, Sheoldreth, grave betrayal, edict effects, and discard, just to take it back to that last group.
I had never heard of stacks when I built Derevi as a counters deck. Someone came over and said, "Oh, you are playing a cheaty commander." I broke up the deck and stopped playing with that group very shortly after.
yeah. people should chill out and see the deck in action. so lame when people just project their image of a deck onto everybody else who plays that commander.
@@murphyspell7125 1) Thanks. 2) I think my reaction was a culmination of many negative interactions I'd had with that playgroup. 3) Gives me a chance to rebuild it even better. ("Always look on the bright side of life," to quote Monty Python.)
We should pick the 6 worst from this list and call them the sinister 6. My picks in no particular order are Vorinclex, Narset, Grand Arbiter, Tergrid, Sin Triplets and Derevi.
Honestly its mostly how the deck is built or played. Baral doesn't have to be nothing but counterspells. He would be fine for a blue spellslinger deck.
Tergrid is super nasty, I play her in MTGO a lot and I need to make sure people know I am playing her before they join, or they just immediately leave. It usually ends up being 1v3 regardless, which is fun in and of itself :D
Narset is fine. Natset extra turns is not. I have designed (have yet to physically build) a Jeskai deck centered around noncreature spells. The deck is designed to use one of 3 commanders with the other two in the 99. Narset is one of the 3 along with Kykar, the Wind's Fury and Sevine the Chronoclasm. There is no top-deck manipulation, extra turns, or extra combat. Just value from casting noncreature spells.
There is one other gimmicky way to play Maralen This is otherwise known as...Maralen the Troll (TCGplayer Prices) Maralen of the Mornsong $21.99 Glacial Chasm $4.36 Ad Nauseum $9.98 Sickening Dreams $0.25 96 Swamps (If you have enough) Total $36.58 (If you don't include basic lands) ALWAYS wins on turn 5 if your opponents aren't aware of what you're up to
Hah, I run Grand Arbiter Augustin IV as my stax commander. I put Helm of the Host on him, and Mechanized Production on either the helm or an indestructible artifact like Darksteel Ingot. 😂🙃
This is an issue i have with my Razaketh the foul blooded deck. Once Razaketh was out other players didnt realise it but i had already won.... you have removal? Instant speed sac for everafter that can go back into my deck. You have creatures? I will endlessly loop murderous rider or get archfiend of despair. The deck was unbelievably oppressive and its only saving grace was one of its two win conditions was really janky and involved me using liches mastery to get to zero life and then using repay in kind
As the resident “Mr.TinyBones” of my lgs yes he is hated and he is surprisingly powerful and damn do i love it when the table tells me its not cedh viable and then scoops turn 3
Jhoira has become my favorite deck, but it really upsets many ppl in the tournaments I go, sometimes I have to face 3 vs 1, but I find satisfying when I can pull a win in those situations.
Removing all of my opponent's threats and making it so that they can not achieve their strategy is my favourite way of playing the game. Sadly many people don't like that.
My favorite deck is my Grand Arbiter Deck and its based around advisors, with persistent petitioner and bruvac for a big mill theme and not a stacks type deck! Try it!
Out of the listed decks, I'd want to build Derevi and Tinybones - I'd probably be doing just an evasive deck with Derevi without stax pieces and try to tap/untap cards that can tap for more than 1 mana into instant speed big spells during Combat (maybe put in a Kruphix or Horizon Stone to keep my mana between phases) or maybe a Helix Pinnacle wincon Tinybones... I want to see how a discard deck looks, because it does use cards that other decks don't want to touch with a 10ft pole I have Painful Quandary in my Liesa deck and it's okay, it's kind of heavy in there, and in that deck most of the time I'm just punishing my opponents for casting spells, healing or preventing certain actions like via Containment Priest or Aven Mindcensor. And I also have some swords in there too to smack people harder
maralen + agent + ob nixilis is nasty. basically "at the begining of each aponants upkeep, they lose 13 life, sacrifice a creature, and puts a +1/+1 counter on ob nixilis unshackled, you search their library for any card, exile it, you may cast that card and spend mana as if it were mana of any color to cast that spell" oh, and shorthand "each aponant quits the game"
Hehehehe you mentioned the Seinfeld deck. It's a deck about doing nothing. And immediately after is one I'm building... I mean I plan to build a "fair" magic commander with it but....
My Narset deck has no extra turn spells in it at all. I may have to give it a work over but if I do it still won't. (My Avacyn deck doesn't have Armageddon but does have World slayer...)
Hey everyone. You do know you don't necessarily have to go all in with one strategy... For example I have a Nekusar deck and people in my LGS always assume I run all wheel effects when in reality it has 0. Be creative, have some imagination. Good day. And yes, I still win with it.
I want to have a Narset deck, but with one rule which will be - No extra turns - No extra combat - No mass lands destruction But I will make a deck with many mana rocks, so I can play Narset around turn 3. I also want to have a lot of big noncreature spells. I think that's fair🙂
For my fellow Avacyn fans out there, I recommend you pick up Sephara, Sky's Blade instead. She gives all flying creatures prot instead of everything, so it's a lot more fair. She also effectively only costs 1 mana. (You can also still do board wipe tribal with protection cards like Selfless Savior, Indestructibility, Darksteel Armor, and Aegis Angel.)
Keep in mind as I see a lot of people do Sephara wrong, That her ability is an alternate castings cost not an alternate play cost. Meaning that commander tax still applies for following casts.
Since my main colors are Gruul, I use Vorinklex with no pity. Because my best friend's favorite deck type is stax, and Sen Triplets and Breya are his favorite commanders. And my colors are Gruul. The colors that can't really DO anything to stop stax strats from happening. Yeaaah, screw people liking me, I choose violence 🤣
I built sen triplet. mainly cause one Balan was kind of getting boring, two Marchesa the black rose need a lot more cards, and third and biggest reason the best player at the play group build a sliver tribal deck
How is Jhoira deck solitare ? I have build it up and yes you play a ton of 0 mana artifacts but that doesnt take any time. My turn is in fact much faster than other players turn because i play 1-30 artifacts, draw 1-30 cards in like 2-5 minutes and say go. Rather than stare at the table figuring out what to do with my other deck when i have just 1 removal for 10 problematic permanents and also i want to develop my board and figure out if i can get out with not playing the removal.

Commander's Quarters Drinking Game Rules:
-Drink every time he says "well"
That's the only rule. Even just this rule borders on being dangerous.
in my playgroup, it's edgar markov, that eminence is nasty.
Explaining his pricetag...
@@murphyspell7125 I have a really cool proxy of him from mtgblackcore. Though I don't even have the vampire deck anymore, there's no point if you already know you're gonna be focused down. For good reason too ofc 😂
My play group allows degenerate decks. But you cant just play it against any deck. Usually we have 1 or 2 jerk games then go for our other decks
A game of "who's degenerate deck is worse" is often a great use for these commanders. It tends to be more on the funny end of gameplay, vs fun and engaging, but it's a great way to end a night, or just for giggles.
I play Tergrid and I'd like to think that I'm a relatively well adjusted individual.
I have 2 of the 4 in the thumbnail as Commanders. I feel personally attacked. 🤣
My first deck was pako and Haldan. Bought it, then put a bunch of fun copy stuff. My meanest deck
I have a Vorinclex deck but it's basically a stompy hit you in the face deck and don't run any of the other stax cards unless my buddy runs his Tegrid
My Derevi helms a Merfolk tribal deck. And yeah... still pretty crazy.
Maybe it says something about my last experience playing that I want to build a Tergrid deck with butcher of makakir, Sheoldreth, grave betrayal, edict effects, and discard, just to take it back to that last group.
I had never heard of stacks when I built Derevi as a counters deck. Someone came over and said, "Oh, you are playing a cheaty commander."
I broke up the deck and stopped playing with that group very shortly after.
yeah. people should chill out and see the deck in action. so lame when people just project their image of a deck onto everybody else who plays that commander.
You acted too soon. Damn what others think of or say about YOUR deck...they don't own it or have to pilot it...
@@murphyspell7125 1) Thanks. 2) I think my reaction was a culmination of many negative interactions I'd had with that playgroup. 3) Gives me a chance to rebuild it even better. ("Always look on the bright side of life," to quote Monty Python.)
Grand arbiter persistent petitioners deck is pretty neat and one that you don’t expect when you see him
We should pick the 6 worst from this list and call them the sinister 6. My picks in no particular order are Vorinclex, Narset, Grand Arbiter, Tergrid, Sin Triplets and Derevi.
Honestly its mostly how the deck is built or played. Baral doesn't have to be nothing but counterspells. He would be fine for a blue spellslinger deck.
happy owner of Merfolk Tap/Untap shenanigans tribal Derevi here :) (sure, it runs Opposition and Glare of Subdual, but that's about it)
Tergrid is super nasty, I play her in MTGO a lot and I need to make sure people know I am playing her before they join, or they just immediately leave. It usually ends up being 1v3 regardless, which is fun in and of itself :D
My only two decks that aren't pre-cons are Narset and Joira. It wasn't even on purpose to mean, I just built decks that I thought were powerful.
I've got a T&T hatebears list. It's got Tergrid, Vorinclex, Jin, Gaddock Teeg. I guess I'm missing Sen Triplets.
My lowest TCGPlayer market price is currently $1.94 for my Fifth Dawn printing. Playing me in your deck makes you at least 10% cooler.
With umbris your opponents can say no more to library searching, topdecking, and graveyards
There is one other gimmicky way to play Maralen This is otherwise known as...Maralen the Troll (TCGplayer Prices)
Maralen of the Mornsong $21.99
Glacial Chasm $4.36
Ad Nauseum $9.98
Sickening Dreams $0.25
96 Swamps (If you have enough)
Total $36.58 (If you don't include basic lands)
ALWAYS wins on turn 5 if your opponents aren't aware of what you're up to
I love how he tells us to not play this while telling us EXACTLY how to make them more obnoxious to play against.
People seem to have bad memories with Sen Triplets. Nowadays its totally fair and not anywhere broken.
Gaddock Teeg is the bane of my existence for my homemade Zaxara X deck!!
Oh lord, so many fun police.
I have a budget narset deck and it's dragons approach people like it cos it's a refreshing take
As the resident “Mr.TinyBones” of my lgs yes he is hated and he is surprisingly powerful and damn do i love it when the table tells me its not cedh viable and then scoops turn 3
Try it!
Out of the listed decks, I'd want to build Derevi and Tinybones - I'd probably be doing just an evasive deck with Derevi without stax pieces and try to tap/untap cards that can tap for more than 1 mana into instant speed big spells during Combat (maybe put in a Kruphix or Horizon Stone to keep my mana between phases) or maybe a Helix Pinnacle wincon
Tinybones... I want to see how a discard deck looks, because it does use cards that other decks don't want to touch with a 10ft pole
I have Painful Quandary in my Liesa deck and it's okay, it's kind of heavy in there, and in that deck most of the time I'm just punishing my opponents for casting spells, healing or preventing certain actions like via Containment Priest or Aven Mindcensor. And I also have some swords in there too to smack people harder
maralen + agent + ob nixilis is nasty.
basically "at the begining of each aponants upkeep, they lose 13 life, sacrifice a creature, and puts a +1/+1 counter on ob nixilis unshackled, you search their library for any card, exile it, you may cast that card and spend mana as if it were mana of any color to cast that spell"
oh, and shorthand "each aponant quits the game"
I find it funny that most of these decks are mono-colored which classic wisdom say it’s weak
Huh... most of my play group play everything but maybe 1 or 2 of these cards/decks. I'm not surprised it isn't very fun.
You could build a mono red oneshot deck to deal with those pesky player... Jeska+Dargo with a bunch of sac fodder should be a fun answer
My favorite type of commanders God of salt is 1#
Hehehehe you mentioned the Seinfeld deck. It's a deck about doing nothing.
And immediately after is one I'm building... I mean I plan to build a "fair" magic commander with it but....
I have a vornclex voice of hunger deck and I don’t feeel like a jerk at all. Their are many cards to help prevent them from not coming out or anything
Kaervek, The Merciless is watching with interest and taking notes.
While watching this episode I had the idea to build Gaddok Tegg hydra tribal so thank you for the idea ig!
Ah yes blim,the comedic genius.
I want to have a Narset deck, but with one rule which will be
- No extra turns
- No extra combat
- No mass lands destruction
But I will make a deck with many mana rocks, so I can play Narset around turn 3.
Meaning that commander tax still applies for following casts.
lol avacyn is terrible as a commander, 8 mana and mono white LOL
Do a version of of close quarters where you all use these
Since my main colors are Gruul, I use Vorinklex with no pity. Because my best friend's favorite deck type is stax, and Sen Triplets and Breya are his favorite commanders. And my colors are Gruul. The colors that can't really DO anything to stop stax strats from happening. Yeaaah, screw people liking me, I choose violence 🤣
need that tergrid deck tech
I built sen triplet. mainly cause one Balan was kind of getting boring, two Marchesa the black rose need a lot more cards, and third and biggest reason the best player at the play group build a sliver tribal deck
My lgs hate my pirate deck and many refuse to play vs it.
Hahah thats the reason i took apart admital becket brass
Whats your commander
You forgot about Thasa. The ability to search your opponent's library and stealing their stuff can get annoying. Especially with agent of treachery.
Surprised that my new bro Umbris isn't here. The guy is very well loved at our meta's table
Ooh a list of my next builds
