I just bought one extended light with packs, thank you for the review, great review, thank you for side by side comparisons thats huge great info in this review
I'm guessing that you weren't able to make your trip in August I hope you still plan to update us. I placed an order for them tonight so I'm really interested
Definitely still planning to do an update about these. Life had other plans for me this backpacking season, unfortunately. I do already wish the saddle bags were bigger.
@@lovedogsontheloose I'm really thrilled that I was able to help you. Of course that pales in comparison to how helpful your videos have been thank you!
At several points in your video I noticed the harnesses twisting to one side--which you acknowledge by saying you need to tighten the straps. However, this is something I've seen other reviewers complain about (even with thoroughly-adjusted, tight straps) so I'm thinking this may be a flaw in the design. Or, could just be a problem with certain breeds. I'm shopping for a harness for my greyhound, so I'm especially concerned about this twisting.
I did end up having some issues with Hazel's staying tight enough (she's got that deep barrel chest and then a much leaner waist, whereas Japhy is just thick all the way through). I'm wondering if this is related to that last strap just not really hitting in the best place, particularly for leaner dogs. I also have the Ray Allen Icon Air harnesses, which are very very pricey, but I got them at nearly half off during a rare RAM Black Friday sale, and fwiw, they are my go-to harnesses right now. I don't use harnesses outside of backpacking very often, but when the van broke down and I needed clear "do not pet" signs on my dogs while we stayed at a hotel, those were a godsend. Easy/quick to put on, stayed in place, and covered in velcro for all the patches you'd ever need. Those are on my shortlist of gear review videos coming up... The differences between Säker and Ray Allen, of course, are huge. They have a completely different target audience. Ray Allen has been around for decades working with police and military dogs which obviously need their gear to work (i.e. stay fitted properly). I'd hoped that Säker would be sort of a happy medium for folks who don't need military-grade harnesses but do need high quality functional gear (especially for hardcore adventurers). I did some Googling and found this page (apologies if you've already seen it): www.barleykennels.co.uk/care/harnesses#:~:text=Harnesses%20are%20becoming%20more%20and,fit%20for%20their%20body%20shape. Sorry, this was long and probably not very helpful.
ive got the pro, their smallest size in medium for my huskies. They are the right size but the straps will not stay tight. Keep coming loose and that concerns me esp for safety… especially around the chest. Ive had to re tighten mine twice now on my female and once on my male. For almost $200 im a little disgruntled
I would definitely reach out to Säker about that. Have not had that issue with either of the Canyon Light harnesses that I've got, but the hardware is different on the Light (plastic vs aluminum). Either way, I'd contact support and see what they can do.
Do you have a quick 3mo review of fit/comfort after any longer trecks with loaded packs? Have you noticed any unusual wear/rub spots from the harness on your dogs? I just ordered two, a pro and light for my two Aussies after deciding nothing on the market, aside from the Saker, fit our needs and use case. With their longer hair, i'm assuming (based on previous experience) i'll still need to sleeve some buckles/connectors to keep their long hair from getting caught and ripped out. How have they been working for your pups?
Unfortunately, we weren't able to do any backpacking trips this season. Life just didn't allow it. I'm still planning to do a trip to hardcore test these, but I'm afraid I'm not much help to you right now.
I am thinking of transitioning from a Help Em Up Harness (w/ front and rear handle), for a dog that we thought had DM, but doesn't... appears to be IVDD of some type. He doesn't need the rear handle so much anymore and the HEU harness otherwise is not the greatest piece of workmanship! Is this harness, with the extension, supportive enough, and the handle placed properly enough to support the weight of a 65 lb dog for general walking around and getting in/out of the car? Thank you!
Short answer: yes, I think it would be great for that. Longer answer: ua-cam.com/video/yIQAVKzINFs/v-deo.html. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any other specific questions you have. I'll do my best to help.
@@lovedogsontheloose thank you so much for your above and beyond answer to my question. First person that has ever replied to a question with a video!! You have a new fan!
@@chuckmurphy7280 You're welcome. I just thought it would be more helpful to actually SEE what I was talking about instead of me just saying, "Yeah, it will work." And, I'm sure there are others for whom the question has come up as well. Have a good night, and give your pup some love for me.
@@chuckmurphy7280 someone just added a comment to the video answer I posted for you about this, and I think it's important to share. Their comment: "3rd strap isn't on the rib cage but farther over the "soft" part of the body.... therefore you shouldn't try to lift your pup as this could be dangerous (pressuring internal organs)." It may be a situation where you can simply adjust where the straps sit, but not sure. I do know that the Säker offers a "Rescue Sling" that's intended for emergency carry. It adds a belly pad to that third strap, so it may be worth looking into this.
Good question! Japhy is dog reactive and selective with strangers. It's for his and others' safety.
