The Z-packs became pretty uncomfortable for me after a few years. I'm not sure exactly what caused it, but I'd read some things in the Backpacking Light community about "torso collapse" that can occur in some of these sub-2-pound packs, particularly when you're carrying at the higher end of its rated weight capacity, and that might be what happened in my case. Not sure. Now that I've had and used the Durston Kakwa 40 for a couple of seasons, I do think it carries the higher end of its rated weight capacity better. It's pretty easy for me to carry 30-35# in the Durston when I'm out with the dogs and need to carry more.

I have 100% hit my head (or shoulder) on it every time so far... lol. I might learn to dodge it eventually.

I don't have the Napier anymore (I've since bought a van), but I still use the Stowaway with the van and it's really helpful. Sometimes I wish I hadn't sold the Napier, though, so I could've tried it with my van's barn doors.

I did end up having some issues with Hazel's staying tight enough (she's got that deep barrel chest and then a much leaner waist, whereas Japhy is just thick all the way through). I'm wondering if this is related to that last strap just not really hitting in the best place, particularly for leaner dogs. I also have the Ray Allen Icon Air harnesses, which are very very pricey, but I got them at nearly half off during a rare RAM Black Friday sale, and fwiw, they are my go-to harnesses right now. I don't use harnesses outside of backpacking very often, but when the van broke down and I needed clear "do not pet" signs on my dogs while we stayed at a hotel, those were a godsend. Easy/quick to put on, stayed in place, and covered in velcro for all the patches you'd ever need. Those are on my shortlist of gear review videos coming up... The differences between Säker and Ray Allen, of course, are huge. They have a completely different target audience. Ray Allen has been around for decades working with police and military dogs which obviously need their gear to work (i.e. stay fitted properly). I'd hoped that Säker would be sort of a happy medium for folks who don't need military-grade harnesses but do need high quality functional gear (especially for hardcore adventurers). Yeah, this incident knocked me down pretty good. It's taken me a little while to feel confident again, in the van, in myself, and in other people. I think I replayed how I could've done things differently half a million times in those 2.5 months, but sometimes shtuff just happens. That said, I was overwhelmed by the number of people who jumped in to help us out. And my general philosophy is that somehow, somewhere down the road, the folks at that shop will reap what they sow.
