I have 5 good sized dogs. They get half kibble. And half road kill deer stew. My oldest dog no longer gets ear infections since starting him on stew. Our newest member had very runny itchy eyes. It slowly has cleared up and hardly runs anymore. Plus they love it 😍

That's what we do; we feed a small amount of high-quality kibble as a base, then rotate proteins from eggs to raw, fermented dairy, fish, etc and top it of with a few extras like pumpkin. Coats are soft, no "doggy" smell, fresh breath with no tartar, and zero health issues, even for my 16-yr-old staffy.

I looked up Farmer's Dog's website ONCE a year ago and ever since then I have been bombarded with the same 3 commercials on UA-cam on every single commercial break. They could have the best product in the world but UA-cam and their advertising has poisoned me towards them for life.
I cannot emphasize how annoying it is to be mowing the lawn, or in the shower and hear the same commercial for the millionth time and not be able to skip it. Even the first 5 seconds gets me angry at this point.

Farmers Dog customer service was amazing. We had a box getting ready to ship and sadly one of our dogs passed away. We were heartbroken and called to cancel the box and they couldn’t have been nicer. Immediately cancelled the box and refunded the money. We also received a beautiful live houseplant and note delivered in condolence. Our other dog still eats farmers dog and loves it.

Only 2 points in but I'm curious to see how this goes.
I work in a dog kennel where people board their pets for vacation, a few people have brought this in and it looks good, even smells good. But it's so messy and I never looked it up but I'm guessing WAY overpriced, Guess I'll keep watching and find out. :)
Well now that i finished, my answer is no.
What we do is buy walmart dog food, think its pure balance? Then whenever we buy meat its usually in bulk. We will take the mest and cut it up and freeze it, but while im cutting it, ill cut any fatty pieces off or weird looking pieces, always generous to make sure theres meat too, but we take all those trims and my girlfriend will cook them and we have broth we add and then we portion that out and put it on top of his kibble.
    He absolutely loves it.
Utilizing our potential trash to make my dogs diet significatly better?
    Win win.

Thank you for this video. I joined a homemade dog food group on Facebook and asked if anyone would recommend an animal nutritionist on UA-cam or elsewhere and "The BK Pets" was mentioned. I am constantly doing research about how to improve my dogs homemade dog food. I think I can make my dogs food cheaper and as I am recently retired I couldn't really afford the Farmer's Dog, but I really appreciated your review of it. Along with the homemade dog food I also give them a vitamin chew, but recently switched to Native Pet vitamin powder. I also add sardines for omega's and make a mix of ground beef and turkey, seaweed calcium powder, taurine, wheatgrass, pumpkin, blueberries, eggs, broccoli, spinach, carrots, and recently I started adding a little bit of oatmeal because money is getting tighter on only a Social Security income. I also started making my own cat pate to feed the two stray kittens. My neighbor feeds them dry food, but I feed them wet and now homemade wet food in the morning and evening.

The things that The Farmer’s Dog has as their ingredients I buy at my grocery store and add that to a kibble type dog food. The cost is significantly lower for the same ingredients. And, I know that the food doesn’t come from china. I would not be comfortable having a dog food company (for profit business) tell me what’s good for my dog. I’d rather my vet tell me what’s good for her. If I don’t have a lot of time on my hands, I wouldn’t have a dog. The dog would suffer and that’s not fair to them.

To anyone still considering the farmer’s dog: it’s a little over $200/month for my 23 lb Mini Aussie. I hate it when companies choose the amount of food your dog is supposed to need. Maybe I want to feed them 2% of their body weight versus a 2.5% that way they can have extra treats throughout the day as well but they don't even tell you the price per pound let alone the recommended actual amount to feed. Like how much did this package actually cost per pound and how many pounds did you get?

I would not feed it unless my dog developed an intolerance to raw foods. I currently feed Dr. Harvey’s base mixes with proteins and oils I source. I am about to start adding PMR DIY meals to the mix, with the goal of feeding 1 Dr. Harvey’s meal and 1 PMR meal per day. I am using a UA-camr pet nutritionist who specializes in balanced PMR meals to build these recipes, and will eventually incorporate other philosophies. With the internet, I have so much exposure to differing raw feeding methods, and I have come to believe that an everything in moderation approach is best for me and my pets. I do love watching your videos because I get access to product information other UA-camrs seem to overlook. Let’s be honest, I don’t follow Dr. Judy and Mariah Pierson exclusively. I watch Kimberly Gauthier and Scott Marshal, and a bunch of others, including you.

    • @thebkpets
      @thebkpets  Місяць тому +3

I love this approach! Moderation is key and it makes sense why you wouldn’t feed TFD. Many people ask us if one food is good or not and truthfully, it all depends. If someone like you is considering TFD, it probably doesn’t make sense because you would be downgrading in quality, vs someone coming from kibble who would be making a huge jump in quality to TFD.

Hey Bryce, big fan of the channel. I feed my girls Open farm + ancient grains and they do really well on this food. I've always been interested in Farmers dog, but it's not in my budget at the moment but possibly in the future. I've been told recently that I'm feeding a bad food and that I should be feeding Hill's or Purina and it has me worried. If you have any advice or input on this topic I'd appreciate it very much, I know you get a lot of comments!

    • @thebkpets
      @thebkpets  Місяць тому +4

Hi there! Thanks so much for your kind words. Want to start by saying you are not alone in this and many conventional vet professionals will tell you that Hill's and Purina are the best. For us, the simplest thing it comes down to is, what do we want our dogs to be eating? My wife and I take our own health very seriously so we eat grass-fed beef, high quality grains, etc. Now, we aren't advocating for a large amount of grains but what we're saying is that the high-quality ingredients that Open Farm uses like grass-fed beef seem much better than the lower quality ingredients companies like Hills and Purina use like conventional meat, low-quality grains, corn, etc. Open Farm is balanced just like the others and they are far more transparent about their sourcing, so the choice is clear for us. Hope this helps! :)

The problem with the top, cooked, frozen, fresh dog foods (Farmer's Dog, Ollie's, Just Food For Dogs) is that they contain a lot of filler carb. For example, the recipes that contain rice are at least half rice. That means the dog owner is paying a heck of a lot for frozen rice. Anyway, the good news about Just Food For Dogs sells their vitamin/mineral pre-mix with the recipe card. So, this means the owner can make the exact recipe at home at a much lower price point and no shipping. I'm pretty sure that the JFFD vitamin/mineral pre-mix is calcium and phosphorus plus only a few more things with the bulk of the nutrition coming from added liver and heart-- The less the "synthetic" additions the more ingredients the owner has to accrue to make the recipe. To keep the balance, though, the owner can't randomly cut down on the rice or other carb ingredients. I would recommend watching the yt channel, The Dog Nutritionist for very simple recipes (cooked and raw) to make for your dog to feed in rotation with other recipes or as a wonderful addition to a kibble diet.

I have had my 60lb boxer on The Farmers Dog for over a year now. It is costing me $11.20 per day which to me is a little pricey. I was using their recipes they give you (which they have quite a few) if you choose to make your own and use their suppliment packs. I was able to save a little but the suppliment packs were about $20 a week so $80 a month. So with the ingredients I bought plus the suppliment packs plus the time it took to make 8 days worth of food I decided to go back to the premade portions. If I were to go back to making it myself I would maybe try to find a less expensive way to suppliment.
I had to go back to kibble for a few weeks and wow the gas started immediately and he would empty his water bowl daily. When he is on TFD he doesn’t need to drink much water at all. Overall we are pretty happy. We will be going in for bloodwork soon to see how everything is looking.

No, I was at a light. Didn’t see the driver until he turned, lit up as soon as he turned to. Had a cross guard vest on. I could see the Farmers Dog bags stacked on his back seat. Van was full

It’s gotta be better than kibble on the market

These incessant commercials infuriate me. The vocal fry, mainly. But then the anti-science bullshit. But finally, I don’t own a dog, I don’t want a dog, I will never have a dog. Why do I get these ads 20 times a day????

Raw is a new fad diet now (much like grain free).
So tired of people being sold things like this.

Raw was fed for 30,000 years before kibble became the new fad diet for the last 100 years. Also, raw wasn’t even mentioned in this video. The farmer’s dog is gently cooked. Weird comment.

Kind of kills my confidence when he calls dark green leafy vegetables carbohydrates. Come on, they have some carbs, but nowhere near 15 to 20%

Your scoring seems a bit harsh. I would say a more accurate rating would be
    4.3/5.0

You’d be surprised at what companies have to do to hit 4.3/5

Are there any dog foods that get a 5/5? I’m not currently able to make homemade dog food, and it is so stressful trying to figure out what’s good and not good.
To anyone still considering the farmer’s dog: it’s a little over $200/month for my 23 lb Mini Aussie. Their pricing is really hidden until you get past the initial discounts and finally get charged for a full month. Just FYI - not a comment on whether it’s worth it or whether you should feed this.

Try the simple food project. It is a freeze dried brand, very good product and the most affordable I have found for freeze dried. They have a website. They have good customer service. Look into it.

It’s the same vitamin and mineral pack they use in their food. Says so on their website

It’s interesting that you saw it would cost over $200/month for a 23 lb dog and that’s what we saw it would cost for a 50-lb dog. Also, there are for sure foods that get much closer to a 5/5, more coming on those later!
